Exceedingly Abundantly Above

here are 7,487 promises in God’s Word. All of them belong to God’s people: those who have a new nature now, those referred to biblically as “children of promise” and “heirs of promise” (Galatians 4:28, Hebrews 6:17). God’s promises, like a rainbow, arc over our lives from the beginning to the end. They are so diverse in nature, believers never face any negative situation without a suitable promise empowering them to overcome. One of the most amazing promises is Ephesians 3:20: “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or imagine, according to the power that works in us” (MEV).

One of my favorite uncles lived in Baraboo, Wisconsin (a small rural community on the way to the Wisconsin Dells). I often prayed, “God, please send a born-again believer to Uncle Dick to share the Gospel with him,” then my voice would trail off, with echoing negative thoughts like, “There aren’t any born-again believers

his son-in-law (who lived next door) let them sleep on their couches and the floors of their trailers. I asked God to send one, and instead, He sent wall-to-wall Christians—singing, worshipping, holding Bible studies and sharing the truth with my uncle and his family—for over a week, while they waited for their bus to be fixed. Then, as they were leaving, I showed up (feeling almost useless after I heard what God had done). Many times, since that day, the thought has surfaced in my heart, “If the Almighty God could do that when I doubted, what can He do when I believe?” Try stretching your faith that high today! omans 5:8 says, “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us”. If Jesus shed his blood for us and paid the ultimate price so we could be set free, how can we continue to follow a path of sin? How can we, as Christians, the children of God, who are the body of Christ and carry the Holy Spirit in us, still sin? How can we can seek to commit sin, expect to be forgiven, and just sin all over again for our earthly pleasure in it? Why does this pattern keep repeating itself in so many lives? "What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?" These words were written by the apostle Paul in Romans 6:1-2. As I write this my spirit is truly troubled. Being a Christian means surrendering your life to the Lord. You're being reborn as you die spiritually of this corrupted world of sin, and are now born in the love, grace, kindness, and awesomeness of Jesus Christ! Being a Christian isn't some mask you put on and take off when it's inconvenient. It's a lifestyle to live by each and every day. Yet so many who call themselves Christians don't live their lives the way they should. We should be living every single day as if there wasn't going to be a tomorrow here on Earth, because, in reality, no one really knows. "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come” (Matthew 24:42). We don't know when Jesus is coming back, and if we don't choose to live our lives
faithfully for the Lord today, we may never get that day back. Instead of trying to use Jesus's suffering as an excuse to waste our time and follow a path of continuous sinning, if we truly believe all of what God has done and who he is, we need to put our focus on the Lord today. We need to take Christianity as more than a religion, but a reality that we should never let go of. We need to put aside our sinful desires and awaken a hunger inside of us for the living trinity: God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, three but one the same. I understand that while we're still here on Earth, we're still bound to sin. No human being is perfect, and we're bound to mess up at times. But Jesus was beaten, insulted, whipped, spat on, and even rejected by God the father for our sake. And he did it all for you and me. How can we say “I am a Christian”, and still continuously live out the pattern of “sin, pray, repeat”? We need to know the value of both the temporary things of this world and the eternal implications they hold.

Be Passive Aggressive MONEY MATTERS WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.
M
y regular readers know that I have served as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University for over fourteen years at my local church, Westmore Church of God. So I’m a big advocate of Ramsey’s principles for budgeting and getting out of debt. Now, let me shock you by saying that I have some disagreements with statements Ramsey makes regarding investing. Let’s start with the common ground: I fully agree with Ramsey’s advice to try to save 15% of income every month into retirement accounts—Roth IRA, 401k, etc. And I have no problem with his advice to diversify your investments over a variety of stock funds including large companies, small companies, emerging markets, and global funds which invest in companies around the world. But I strongly disagree with Ramsey continually insisting that actively-managed mutual funds are the wisest choice because there are “plenty of them out there that have consistently beaten the market.” This statement is extremely suspect and flies in the face of all academic research over many decades. Certainly, some funds do beat the stock market indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S & P 500 Index of the 500 largest U.S. companies—in any given year. But the question is, how do actively-managed funds fare against “passive” index funds over long periods of time? Over periods of ten years, fifteen years, or longer, the number of actively-managed mutual funds that have “beat the market” consistently is very small; in fact, numerous academic studies by researchers (some of them have won the Nobel Prize for Economics) prove that after fifteen years, barely ten percent of activelymanaged mutual funds have beaten their benchmark index (the stock market average their performance is

judged against). And even this number of ten percent is really misleading because during those fifteen years, nearly half of the actively-managed funds collapsed and disappeared due to their poor performance, so the number of funds “beating the market” over fifteen years or longer is actually much smaller than ten percent. Ramsey is known for recommending the American Funds family which typically charges an upfront commission of 5.75% (ouch!), in addition to annual fees that are roughly triple the cost of a no-load index fund such as the Vanguard S&P 500 Index Fund or the Vanguard Total World Stock Index Fund (both which I highly recommend for diversification and the lowest fees in the industry). In fact, one of the American Funds which Ramsey owns shows a ten-year annual return of 7.61%, which is quite respectable until you see that the S&P 500 Index returned 9.69% over that same ten-year period, and the index fund (in this case, from Vanguard) had an annual expense ratio (fees charged yearly to the investor) which is fourteen times less expensive than the American Funds annual fees. Over a couple of decades or more, the difference in those annual costs really adds up and makes a tremendous difference in the amount of money you’ll have at retirement. I am obviously trying to be provocative by titling this article “Be Passive Aggressive,” but now you can see what I mean. While some like Dave Ramsey insist that actively-managed funds are superior to “passive” index funds, I (along with famed investor Warren Buffett and nearly every acclaimed academic economist) insist that most of us would be better off by investing in index funds due to their low costs and superior performance in the long run. When it comes to long-term investing, “don’t just do something, sit there.”

Destiny Awaits oman, your destiny is waiting. You may come from humble beginnings. You may even be an orphan like me. There was a time when I felt like a nobody. At age 27, the Lord called me and told me to teach others about him. Through ACTS Ministry in Burkina Faso, thousands of women and children have heard and responded the Good News of Salvation in Jesus.
Jesus calls us into his family and we all have a unique destiny to fulfill. It is God who works in us both to will and to do of his good pleasure (Philippians 2:13). It didn’t look like it, but a young girl, an orphan by the name of Hadassah, had a destiny to fulfill. She was a most unlikely candidate for receiving honor. She was far away from her own country, in a foreign land under a Persian king who had no regard for the God of the Jews. It happened that the King grew angry with his

You know the story: by “chance” Hadassah, known to the Persians as Esther, was chosen and the King found he loved her above all the others. Esther was crowned queen. As this unfolded, the Lord was positioning Esther for destiny. Secretly, an enemy of the Jews plotted to kill all the Jews. Esther’s destiny was revealed. It was her time to speak out for righteousness and save her people. Her Uncle Mordecai told her to go and tell the King about the evil plot. Even though she was queen, Esther was a woman who had no right to talk to the King without an invitation. Esther was frightened. But Mordecai said that if she stayed quiet, deliverance might arise from another place, but she may be destroyed. Then he said the words often quoted, “Who knows if you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther spoke and deliverance came. She fulfilled her destiny. The Lord knew you from your mother’s womb, called you and put you in the place where you are right now. He has planned your future, but you must choose it. Your destiny awaits. Each one of us can reach people that others cannot reach. And you are his first choice. What if your next decision opened a door to a life of joy and satisfaction? What if your words changed the outcome of another’s life-path or a whole nation? It is not chance that you have the friends you have. It is not chance that you live where you do. He was getting you into position. Do what it takes to prepare. The Lord has promised to help you find his will and to give you the strength to carry out his destiny through you. Not only will you find satisfaction as you work for the Lord, but he will also take pleasure in your destiny. Woman, like Esther, your destiny awaits.

ut thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou has shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly” (Matthew 6:6,KJV). During a recent conversation with my friend Debbie, she shared with me a powerful example of intercessory prayer in the life of her grandson Bryson. We’ve often talked about the importance of sharing the gospel with the children in our lives and allowing them to see and experience God’s movement in their personal lives. Debbie has shared countless examples of her grandsons being witnesses at school, church, and in their family life! As Debbie began recounting her evening of cleaning in Bryson’s room, I knew she was about to share something special and I was excited to hear, so with great anticipation I listened. The enthusiasm in her voice was contagious and I began to smile knowing that I would hear another aspect of our familiar worship talks. Debbie told me that one evening she went into Bryson’s room to straighten things up. Once in his room, she began putting things away and began noticing sticky notes in various areas of his room. They were on the walls, on his desk, and in his closet! As she looked closer at the sticky notes, she could see clearly that Bryson has written prayer requests on those notes. I could hear the emotion in her voice and as I listened my heart was warmed

as well. Debbie went on to tell me that one of Bryson’s favorite movies is one on prayer and she could see that he was greatly influenced by the movie and was making room in his closet to have a sacred space for prayer. Bryson had a Prayer Closet! He had made a decision to intercede for those he loved. He is a prayer warrior! The Bible tells us of the importance of daily prayer for ourselves and for others. It is also clear that it is important to have a secret place, a closet where we can shut the door and pray to our Father in secret. Bryson is doing just that! This sweet young man is investing in his relationship with God through one of the best weapons we have as Christians, the power of prayer! I’m excited and encouraged as I think of Bryson coming home from school and going into his Prayer Closet or waking Debbie up in the middle of the night to intercede for a friend! Bryson understands the power of prayer! I challenge all of us to follow his example and make room for a Prayer Closet in our homes. Thank you, Bryson for being an example of faithfulness in communion with God through the powerful provision of prayer. Great will be your reward! Pray on Bryson, pray on!

Don't Leave Weak he story I’m about to share begins with sadness, but one day it will end in gladness. If I choose life over death, joy over sorrow. Weeping may endure for a moment, but joy comes in the morning (paraphrased from Psalms 30-5). My family lost our oldest son, Justin, in a fatal car crash in July of 2011. He was a thrill seeking enthusiast, Honda-loving 20 year-old. It seemed his adult life had just begun when we received a knock on our door at midnight, someone saying his life had abruptly ended. Although his life on this earth had ended, his eternal life in Heaven had just began. We too would suffer death of the life we once had, our family once happy and complete now torn apart by tragedy. Our lives were left in a billion fragmented pieces, upside down and twisted inside out. As time passed, healing could only come from the One who holds all things in the palm of His nail-scared hands. Although it’s a daily walk and we take each step oneby-one, day-by-day we have learned to trust in what we cannot see and trust in a God who knows us all by name. This will be the seventh anniversary of his death. In the Bible seven means completion. I truly believe that the stages of grief I have been in over the past seven years are coming to an end. Much like the cocoon stage is dark, cold, empty, and lonely, the breaking forth stage is as bright as the darkness was black. With each day I feel a newness and a willingness to continue on this path I would never choose. Through my experience, I learned I may not ever be able to control what happens in this life, but I could control how I would react to the situations I never chose to explore. My book was published and released on April 26, 2018, and through it I have been able to help others who are suffering the loss of a child. Others have told me that the book could be a help to anyone who had suffered loss of any kind whether it be the loss of a spouse, home, job, hope, or happiness. This has been an incredible journey with many twists and turns, highs and lows, but through it all God has been faithful when I was faithless. He has been my hope when I was hopeless and my joy when I was full of anger. Realizing that with God all things are possible and through Him I can do all things has been my driving force to continue on this path I never chose. My son coined a three word phrase “Don’t Leave Weak” which has followed me, haunted me, and motivated me through the valleys of the shadows of death. The term simply means that in all you do, do it with all of your might. “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might” (Ecc 9-10).

7 Common Forms of Dementia lzheimer’s is by far the most common type of dementia. It accounts for nearly threefourths of all dementia diagnoses in this country. An estimated 5 million people have Alzheimer’s disease, and the numbers continue to climb. Alzheimer’s is now the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. While Alzheimer’s is the most prevalent form of dementia, there are different types. Many of these can be just as life altering. They range from Vascular dementia to Dementia with Lewy Bodies. Less Common Forms of Dementia 1. Vascular dementia: This form of dementia occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. Often it is a stroke that causes vascular dementia. Impaired judgment is usually the first symptom loved ones notice. There are varying degrees of severity related to the amount of damage caused to brain cells. 2. Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB): Lewy bodies are protein clumps that form in the cortex of the brain that lead to dementia. Early signs of DLB include sleep problems, falls, balance issues, hallucinations, and uncontrolled movement. One thing to note is that some people who have Alzheimer’s disease also have DLB. 3. Parkinson's dementia: As Parkinson’s disease progresses, it often creates dementia. An estimated 50–80% of people with Parkinson’s will end up being diagnosed with dementia, too. Researchers think this is due to deterioration of the nerve cells in the brain. Memory loss, mood changes, depression, speech problems, paranoia, and delusions are all symptoms of Parkinson’s dementia. 4. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD): The most common early signs of FTD are a change in personality and difficulty with verbal communication. The diagnosis of FTD sometimes takes a while because the disease impacts people at a younger age than Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Health care providers may struggle to reach a diagnosis.

After 25 years of full-time ministry, I have discovered that many people call themselves Christians, but Christianity is more than just a title and more than attending church; it is the fact that we are doers of God's Word. “They know we are Christians by our love” (John 13:35). This love encompasses compassion (the knowledge that the person is reacting out of hurt rather than love), kindness (our response to all forms of abuse while not tolerating abuse), gentleness (not reacting with aggressiveness), and patience (our lives

The face and neck are usually the first features we notice when we meet someone new, so improvements in this area can create a dramatic change. A firm, trim neck gives the face a more youthful look. Sometimes, just having neck liposculpture completed provides an incentive to make healthier lifestyle choices, and maintain fitness in the rest of the body. Neck liposculpture can be completed in an office surgery setting using local anesthesia with sedation. Often times, laser application or Radiofrequency is completed to the undersurface of the skin just prior to liposuction. The laser or RF energy is thought to cause thermal modulation to the skin resulting in skin tightening. FaceTite is the newest and most effective skin tightening addition to liposuction. Liposuction can be completed solo or with the assistance of Radiofrequency. During the initial consultation, your surgeon will talk with you about the changes you would like to make in your appearance. A thin tube called a cannula is inserted into the fatty area. The cannula is used to break up the fat deposits and sculpt the area to the desired proportions. The newest liposuction techniques involve the placement of a laser fiber or an ultrasound probe through an open ended cannula. Laser energy or high frequency ultrasound energy is delivered directly to the fatty tissues. This focused high level energy causes the fat to be emulsified making suction removal easier. The unwanted fat is removed with a high suction vacuum, leaving the skin, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels intact. The high level energy delivered by the laser fiber or by ultrasound can also be used to heat the undersurface of the skin--thus leading to skin retraction and skin tightening. Liposuction can give this area a new streamlined contour, enhancing the effect of facial features and improving the facial profile. Patients who have been self-conscious about their bulging necklines often feel more comfortable wearing a range of clothing and jewelry styles after liposuction. Neck liposuction is minimally invasive with limited scars, produces consistently good results, and has a particularly high satisfaction rate among patients.

Directions Ingredients • 3/4 c. Seedless raspberry jam • 1 quart (1 and a half pounds) of strawberries cut into fourths • 1 pint raspberries • 1 pint blueberries • 16 oz cream cheese • 1-3/4 c confectioner’s sugar • 1-1/2 c heavy whipping cream, cold • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 vanilla pound cake

Set aside a few berries for topping the trifle. Heat the raspberry jam in a large bowl in the microwave for about 1 minute, or until hot and liquidy. Add the fresh berries and toss to coat. Let sit while you prepare the rest of the recipe, stirring occasionally. In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Set aside. In another large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with the powdered sugar until smooth and creamy. Beat in the vanilla and then beat in a third of the whipped cream. Using a large rubber spatula, fold in the rest of the whipped cream until well combined. Cover the bottom of a 9-inch (14-cup capacity) trifle dish or glass bowl with a layer of lady fingers (break into pieces as necessary). Follow with 1/3 of the berryjam mixture (including 1/3 of the juices), then 1/3 of the cream. Alternate, ending with the cream cheese mixture on top; for the last layer of cream, leave a 1-inch border around the edge showing the fruit beneath. Garnish with the reserved whole berries and a fresh mint spring if using. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or overnight, before serving. This is such a beautiful dessert and perfect for summer get-togethers with family and friends. My daughters love making this with me! It’s simple, colorful, and oh so tasty!

Summer Safety ith the days at their longest and brightest, many of us are taking advantage of the season, soaking up vitamin D and spending as much time in the fresh summer air as we can. While summer can be a wonderful time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, Starr Regional Medical Center is proud to share some key safety tips to keep your summer fun and free of injury and stress. Did you know that heat is the number one weather-related killer in the U.S.? Heat overexposure is especially dangerous for children and the elderly. The good news is that protection from the heat and the sun’s rays can often be relatively easy to manage, so it’s crucial to know how to protect ourselves, especially as we enter the height of summer. Beat the heat this summer with these cool tips: • Stay aware of temperatures and humidity levels and modify your activity appropriately. • Always use an SPF-15 or higher sunscreen that protects against both UV-A and UV-B rays. • Wear sunglasses when outside to protect your eyes from UV-A and UV-B rays. • Limit outdoor activities when temps are highest – typically from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of low to no-sugar fluids, and remember, water is best! • Search out cooler areas, even when outside. When the thermometer climbs above 90, take the opportunity to visit your local library or community center, or browse a fun store, especially if your don’t have access to air conditioning. • Avoid enclosed places like cars or garages. • Break out your favorite loose-fitting, lightweight and lightcolored clothing – summer is about dressing for comfort. • Take breaks when exercising. • Limit or avoid adult beverages; alcohol can impair your body’s ability to self-regulate its temperature. There’s nothing that quite beats the heat like jumping in the water. Whether you’re poolside, lakeside, or beachside, keep these tips from the American Red Cross in mind to ensure a safe and fun time for everyone. • Only swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. • Always swim with a buddy, even in lifeguarded areas. • Never leave a child unattended near water or trust a child’s life to another child. • Young children and inexperienced swimmers should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets when around water. • Refrain from playing around drains and suction fittings in the pool. • Even when not swimming, be cautious near natural bodies of water like the ocean shoreline, rivers and lakes; currents and underwater hazards can make falling into the water dangerous. • Wear a life jacket when boating.

aiting is one of the most difficult things to do. Remember what it was like waiting for Christmas or your birthday as a child? It seemingly took forever to get here and was practically painful as the calendar days slowly passed. What about waiting for graduation from high school or college? We’re trucking through life and wishing the days to fly, but are we embracing the waiting seasons? I ask that question of myself periodically because I’ve stood before groups of various sizes and flat out stated that waiting stinks. What if we were to look at it like we do the season of Advent? There’s great anticipation of the coming of Jesus and the salvation he brings! It’s even more exciting to think about His return for us! When we lament through the dreary days instead of allowing our focus being on what God wants us to learn and even teach others through, we are losing a grasp of joy and freedom freely given to us. It’s not easy or always fun, but it’s worth it because He is in the waiting. Scripture even tells us to wait. “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7). Oh and Romans 8:25 says, “But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.” Does that convict you like it does me? Ouch. To give you an example, I just knew years back that I was called to missions. While in serving on a (phenomenal) team in Russia in 2014, something was stirred and awakened that
God put inside of me before birth. After going through the process of applying with a missions’ organization, having many interviews, and being told it was all but going official, the door was abruptly shut. My heart was shattered and in that, I was left feeling rejected. Had I not heard from God? Was this not my purpose? Fast forward a year and I had started praying with employees who God led me to that were going through various life events (marriage, divorce, birth, death, illness, etc) and one brought me flowers as a way to thank me. My boss said to me, "Jenny, this is your mission field." That obedience was one God called me to because if I was willing to "go" for God, I had to also be willing to "stay." What does this mean for us? Waiting is hard but God is in the waiting. Waiting for marriage, healing, a job, a child, and even a birthday can be a good thing. Again, it’s not easy or necessarily pretty, but it’s worth it. God uses that to refine us to look more like Him and to have our character reflect His. Y’all, we have the honor of being molded to the image of our Savior. That makes waiting worth it; He’s in the waiting.

Dear Children's Church Volunteer by Chris Mullis
When I was 8-years-old, you helped lead children's church where my family worshiped. I’m sorry I don’t remember your name. I was just a kid then and I only attended for a few years, but I remember going to children’s church. I didn’t know the other kids, but you had a friendly smile that made me feel welcome. I’m glad you shared your joy for the Lord. It probably wasn’t easy to keep all the kids under control, because we didn’t always want to be there, but you did your best to help us have fun and learn something. We sang songs like: “Father Abraham” and “Do Lord” and “The Lord’s Army.” Then, we would listen to a Bible story. One Sunday, you told us how Jesus came to save us from our sins so we could live with him in heaven. You said we needed to let Jesus into our hearts. I believed in Jesus and I knew I was a sinner who needed to be saved, but I was too shy to say anything. So I didn’t. You didn’t give up though. You invited the kids to ask Jesus into their heart every Sunday. You would sing the old invitational songs like "Just as I Am" and "Earnestly, Tenderly, Jesus is Calling". I felt Jesus calling to me while you were singing. There was just something about your tenor voice and the way you seemed transported as you sang, “Come home! Come home! Ye who are weary, come home! Earnestly tenderly, Jesus is calling. Calling, oh sinner, come home!” Even as a kid, I could feel it. I knew Jesus was calling. It took three weeks for this shy 8-year-old to get up the nerve, but I finally answered Jesus’s invitation to come home. I walked to the front of

the chapel while you sang and someone prayed with me to receive Christ. I became a Christian that day and I’ve known ever since that one day I will be with Jesus in heaven. Thank you for the part you played in my salvation. You changed the course of my life. I try to live my life for Jesus every day. My faith in Christ carried me through some rough years as a teenager and the struggles of young adulthood. He has been with me as a parent and preacher and has helped me lead my congregation. Jesus leads me through it all and has never let me down. So, thank you. Thank you for giving yourself to the kids who attended children’s church. There’s no telling how many eternities you altered, but I’m so glad you altered mine. I hope you’re doing well and will always be willing to invite someone to church or just pray with them or tell them or show them God's love.
