Walking with God by Jason Barnes

T

When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. —Genesis 5:21-25

he definition of walking with God is living your life in the center of God’s will. “Jesus said, I am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the father except by me” (John 14:6). Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior? This must happen to even begin to walk with God. When was the last time that God corrected you for doing something wrong or convicted you? If there is no conviction there has not been a conversion! “Jesus did not come into the world to condemn the world, but that through him the world might be saved” (John 3:17). Listen to God; he will show you things that you are not going to find out any other way except by him. You are going to learn to walk in his ways, if you only ask, and by listening to him! Ask yourself this question, how many times during the day do I stop and just whisper a little prayer to God asking him to lead and guide and direct me or help me make a decision whether it be something huge, or what somebody else might think might be insignificant? It doesn’t matter what they think. But God says, “to cast all your cares upon [him] and [he] will care for you.” A wise man once told me that if something bothers you, it bothers God. Hallelujah! This is the way that we learn to trust God, by leaning on him. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path” (Proverbs 3:5-6). If you’re going to be the person that God wants you to be, at some point in your life you’re going to have to listen to him and trust him. Nowhere in God’s word does it say that we will understand everything, but in a trusting relationship, when God tells you to do something, you will do it even though you don’t quite understand it. Have you ever disagreed with God? We all have, right? We are taught in 1 Samuel 15:22 that obedience is greater than sacrifice. Have you ever tried to walk a dog that wouldn’t obey? They are all over the place and you are just tugging and pulling and trying to slow them down or

6 // December 2017

trying to guide them in the right direction but they don’t want to do anything that you want them to do. Imagine how God feels about us. He is trying to lead us in the path of righteousness and all we can do is say, “Wait just a minute, God I want to do this.” or “Wait just a minute, God I want to pursue this.” Why are we not pursuing God? Because then and only then will we understand that he Wants to bless our life, but we must give it to him, completely. In conclusion, please make a decision daily to follow him today. Wake up committed to God because if you have accepted Jesus, then you have the Holy Spirit abiding in you. You are not walking on your own. Jeremiah 29:11 states “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” I have heard it said that the miracle is not that we allow God into our life, but the miracle is that God allows us into his life!

My name is Jason Barnes. I have been preaching since 2005. In the past 12 years I’ve been in Pastoral ministry, I served as a Youth Pastor for 6 years and a lead Pastor for almost 6 years. I have a beautiful wife of 24 years and a beautiful daughter that God has blessed us with that is 16 years old. If your looking for a friendly church, we are a loving and compassionate people who believe and preach about Jesus Christ and how he was crucified! We don’t see a dead God; for he is alive and well, sitting at the right hand of the Father making intercession for all if us. God bless you and keep you this prayer. Psalms 91.

A Letter to My Students

Dear students,

I

by Kelly Hixson

want you to know that I love you as if you all were my very own! I look forward to the hugs you give me in the hallway. I love standing at the door of my classroom welcoming you in with a big smile on my face! I go home in the afternoons and talk about you to my family. I go to the store and buy things for you that I think you may like. I plan my lessons with you on my mind. I think of new things I can add to the lesson that may interest you and help you overcome any challenges you might have. I call in support from other services if I see you may need some extra help or even a little extra love and attention. I will not let you fall through the cracks unnoticed! I will always make sure that you have all the supplies you need to start your day. If you don’t have that one person in your life that believes in you, I will always be that person even after you leave my classroom. I lay awake at night and call your names out in prayer, knowing that our Heavenly Father loves you more than I could ever imagine. I lie in bed and wonder if I am doing a good job for you. I have some of the same worries, struggles, and fears that you have. I want you to know that I can empathize with you, because I once was where you are! I know you will go on to do great and mighty things with your life one day. Although

you may feel like just a small kid, you will grow up and become a world changer. Who knows? You may be my nurse, my doctor, my pharmacist, my vet, my banker, my mechanic, or my builder and I hope you will take good care of me, just like I took good care of you. I know that some days you may think I am being tough on you or maybe even a little mean and you just might feel like giving up. Well don’t! Please know that I see your potential. I can see in you what you cannot see. I want to challenge you so you will grow up into a fine young man or woman. I want you to look back and see how far you have come and say “I did it” with your diploma in hand! I will be there, still cheering you on, believing in you, praying for you and please know you will always be my student and I will always be your teacher!

Love, Your Teacher “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” —Jeremiah 29:11(NIV) Kelly Wells is a teacher at Black Fox Elementary. Prince of Peace by Joel Towe

I

“And His name shall be called...Prince of Peace” —Isaiah 9:6

find it ironic that the season we choose to honor the birth of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is often connected to a time of stress and anxiety. Realistically and sadly, it has turned into a very un-peaceful time. I know what you are thinking, ”that’s not how it is supposed to be,” and you are right. But clearly, we have allowed circumstances to distract us, and have let misguided expectations to cause us to lose focus. We need peace but often don’t know where it is or even where to get it. This intrigued me, so I started praying and reading, and it didn’t take long for the Lord to bring to my mind John 14:27 where Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you.” Wow! It’s that simple. You get peace from the Prince of Peace. And He really wants us to have it. He didn’t leave Heaven to come to Earth so that we will stay in our sorrow, our chaos, and our anxieties. He wants us to trade those in for peace. What does that look like? Well, let’s look at when Jesus was with His disciples in a boat on the sea. In the midst of the storm raging, in the midst of His disciples panicking, He was sleeping, yes, resting in peace. That’s the kind of peace we are looking for, and that is the kind of peace Jesus wants to give. That in the midst of chaos, and when the storms are raging, we can rest knowing all will be well. For you see, our focus should never be on

12 // December 2017

the storm, but on the Peace. I’m not sure you are getting this yet, so let me put it this way. Jesus didn’t need to panic and worry about the storm, because He understood clearly that He didn’t have to go through the storm; the storm had to go through Him! Three words and the winds and waves had to bow. “Peace. Be still.” In other words, telling the storm to sit down and shut up! You know, we need to get a little ugly at our circumstances sometimes. In the natural, beauty can be helpful, but in the supernatural, pretty don’t pay the bills! Stand on the authority God has given all of His children and speak to your stress: hush! Speak to your anxieties: silence! Speak to your doubts and fears: sit down! And proclaim the peace of God over your life. When this season gets a little overwhelming, and when it feels like the winds are heavy and the waves of life are high, shift your focus away from those things and toward He who has given you peace, joy, hope, and life. This season is about giving, and Jesus is freely giving what this season seems to be missing: His peace. Ask for it, receive it, and embrace it. He wants you to have it, it’s one of the reasons He came. Joel Towe resides in Cleveland, TN, with his wife, Wendy, and three daughters, Emily, Hannah, and Jessi. Having served in youth ministry, as well as, music ministry for years, he is currently serving as leader for the Band of Brothers Men’s Ministry at Dwelling Place Church International (DPCI), and loves being a part of what God is doing.

Rescuing Hope

H

by Amy Venable

ello! My name is Amy Venable. I was born and raised in Florida. I grew up a PK (Preacher’s Kid), so I was always in church. Living in a Christian home, there were many things that I was not permitted to do. At the time, I felt like all the kids around me were allowed to have fun and do what they wanted, but I was neglected that privilege. I just didn’t feel the whole being saved and church thing. It was boring. I remember thinking to myself one day

during a church service, “How could I ever learn to enjoy church? It must just come with age. I guess around 30-35 I’ll settle down and enjoy going.” Since I didn’t understand the whole church thing and felt deprived, my curiosity, for worldly things began. Around age 17, I began to deal with depression. As time went on I turned to drugs and alcohol to fill this void. All the while, this caused the void in me to grow. I became pregnant and with my first daughter. I cleaned up for a bit, but after giving birth to her, the void inside me remained. I did all I knew to do to fill this emptiness inside and turned back to drugs. The depression and emptiness inside became so bad, I surrendered temporary custody to my dad and step-mom, and jumped head first into my addiction. But when the drugs were gone, the emptiness and depression remained. The drugs had stolen every bit of zest for life away from me, until I reached a point one day and realized I didn’t want to live. I prayed and asked God to let me die in a car crash. I realized I needed help.

14 // December 2017

All this time God was orchestrating my rescue. I chose to go stay a few months with my grandparents, who lived in Cleveland, Tennessee, just to get away from the lifestyle I was involved in. One day while I was there, I felt the urge to read my Bible. I was 20 years old by this time and could never remember ever having the desire to read the Bible. Right before I opened it, I just said, “God if you’re real, say something to me.” This was a devotional Bible, and I randomly flipped open to a Thursday devotion, to discover it was a Thursday, and the verse with that day’s devotion was Jeremiah 29:11. It had already been highlighted pink, my favorite color. I realized in that moment God was speaking to me. God revealed through His Holy Spirit that He was speaking to me through that verse and in that devotion. And he has been speaking to me ever since. He set me free. He fills every void. I just want to encourage someone reading this. You feel as if you are at lowest point you’ve ever been and hope no longer exists. You even wished for death or considered suicide. But there is hope! His name is Jesus! He gives this invitation in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me all who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.” You cannot fight this battle on your own. Jesus is your only Hope. He wants to show you He is real and how much He loves you, and turn everything around for good in your life; He’s just waiting on you to invite Him into your situation. You can say a simple prayer like, “Jesus, I can’t do this on my own anymore. Please help me. I need you to take over my life.” Maybe you’ve been asking, and it appears He’s not listening. Don’t stop talking to Him. He hears every word you speak. He is on His way! Don’t give up! He is coming through for you. Psalm 71:20 says, “You have let me see troubles and hard times, but you will give me new life; You will lift me up from the pits of death!” God has healing for your pain and purpose for your struggle!

My name is Amy Venable. I once was lost, empty, hopeless. Jesus found me and now I have hope and a future.

‘A’ is for Accountability Parenting in the Image of God by Alicia Klepper

T

“My child, don’t ignore it when the Lord disciplines you, and don’t be discouraged when He corrects you. For the Lord corrects those He loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.” — Proverbs 3:11-12

he month of November has always been a favorite of mine. The smell of turkey roasting, dressing in the oven, deviled eggs, mac and cheese, and big belly laughs with family is nothing short of wonderful. However, we all know there is more to the month of November than that. We have all referenced the long-running joke that there is no handbook on parenting when we’re elbowdeep in an offspring situation that we are clueless on how to handle. At that moment we would welcome a contribution from someone...anyone...of direction and guidance. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and we scour the Internet for sound solutions to our dilemma. Anyone willing to confess that you have googled, “How to not ruin my kids”? Parenting literature is a multi-million dollar business and there is an abundance of wisdom to find in them, however the irony of the joke is that there is a Parenting 101 book entitled, The Bible. Who better to seek parenting advice from than the Ultimate Father? There are numerous scriptures specifically regarding parenting and how to raise children (Deuteronomy 6:6-9, Proverbs 13:24, 22:6, 29:15, Ephesians 6:4, just to name a few), as well as the remainder of God’s word displaying how He provides for, interacts with, and gives direction to His children. If we want to discover how to be the perfect parent, let’s study how the perfect Father parents us. When we show our children the face of Jesus in our parenting, they grow up loving the Lord before they even have full awareness of the magnitude of whom He is. When we parent in the image of Christ and His Fathering way, our children learn about their Savior. Let’s begin with accountability.

“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.” — John 15:22 In this passage Jesus was explaining that ignorance, while not fully exempting the people from accountability, could have been plead as an excuse. But, since the Savior

20 // December 2017

of the world, prophesied from the Old Testament, became flesh and was teaching them these things their excuse of ignorance no longer stood. To make it really clear Christ could have said, “Well, now you know.” God is a Father of accountability.

“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” — James 4:17 “So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” — Romans 14:12 Therefore, we should be parents of accountability. It is poor parenting to hold your child accountable for what they have not been taught. In the same token, it is also poor parenting to not hold your child accountable for what they have been taught. When we allow our children to avoid accountability for something they have awareness of, we are not showing them the ways of their Heavenly Father, but the ways of a world that seeks to escape discipline. We do our children an injustice when we reward godly behavior, but withhold accountability for ungodly behavior they know not to do. The Lord loves justice (Isaiah 61:8), which means He loves the balance of reward and consequence, as both teach us to be obedient to His commands and love His ways.

“No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.” — Hebrews 12:11 Alicia Klepper and her husband, Mark, have been married for 15 years. They have three children and are active members at Peerless Road Church. Alicia writes and teaches for children, youth, and women’s ministries.

Together at Christmas and for Life

T

by Beth Henderson

he real Christmas Story, the one about the birth of Jesus Christ, is a story about Life. Life heralded before conception, in the womb, at birth and throughout the ages. In the divine account of Jesus’s birth, we see that God not only values the preborn, but also the elderly and everyone in between. God, in His infinite wisdom, brought men and women, young and old, rich and poor, into the path of His life-changing, life-giving work. That’s just how our wonderful God works. And now, just as then, He wants to bring us all into the path of His life-giving, life-changing work. Because we all have a place in the story. Some of us find ourselves in the place of Mary and Joseph, a young man or woman on the threshold of parenthood. Some, like Elizabeth and Zechariah, are family members, so full of emotions about the coming child. Some of us are like the lowly shepherds, feeling that our own story has made us an outcast in society, yet finding ourselves welcome in the eyes of God, and because we have seen Jesus with our eyes, in our own lives, we can then go out and share the news of the Messiah with others. There are also the Simeons among us, devout believers and servants of God, gifted at speaking the truth to those around them. And the Annas, who go to the throne of God day and night, fasting and praying, and sharing the good news about Jesus to all who will listen. Then, there are those like the Magi, knowing the value of the child that is to be born, using their knowledge and resources to save and bless the life of a child born into uncertain times and (at best) unusual circumstances. So, who are you in the Christmas story? What role will you play this year? For those who find themselves or a family member in the midst of an unexpected pregnancy, I say, do not go it alone. Just as God wove the intricate details of the Christmas story together by bringing together a group of

22 // December 2017

people who had no connection other than His will and a child about to be born, He is already at work in your life, and the life of your unborn child, gathering His servants together to walk this road with you. Help is within reach, within in your community. There are many organizations where you can find humble shepherds, the wise and generous, the devout ones, and the prayer warriors – all waiting to rejoice with you over the birth of your child. Not because of anything they have or have not done, or because of anything that you have or have not done, but because of the Child, the One who put on flesh and dwelt among us, and who calls us all – men and women, rich and poor, young and old – to come together. Not around a manger, but around a cross.

If you are the shepherd or wise man or prophetess or servant, and you’ve been on a journey to finding where God is leading you, it could be that you have a place helping new parents and welcoming new lives into our community. If so, find somewhere in the community to volunteer. After all, if you’re going to be giving gifts this Christmas, what better than the gift of life? What’s All the Fuss About

B

by Sheriee Moneak

rush your teeth twice (yes, twice!) a day. Use this toothbrush, not that one. Floss this way, not that way. Fluoride or no fluoride? No acidic beverages. No grinding or crushing. Yada, yada, yada... What’s all the fuss about? Years ago, I worked as a dental assistant (for a seasoned dentist who rode a 10-speed bicycle to work every day). I knew tooth decay inevitably followed poor oral hygiene. But what I did not know was the value of preventive oral health care and solid treatment planning, and how the health of your mouth affects your whole body. Then it hit me: So this is what all the fuss is about! Emboldened by my own “Aha! moment,” with a grand vision to participate in free health clinics for underprivileged families and establish a chain of “helpful hygienists”, I decided to change a culture because it is not just about brushing your teeth. It’s about living stronger and longer. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a relationship between gum disease and other health complications such as stroke and heart disease. In addition, women with gum disease also show higher incidences of pre-term, low birth-weight babies. Also worth noting, the American Dental Association reported a person’s smile outranked eyes, hair, and body as their most

24 // December 2017

important physical feature. But even for those who have neglected their teeth and gums, there’s good news: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5).

Ouch! Got a toothache?

“Surely he [Jesus] took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” — Isaiah 53:4

On your way to the dentist’s chair?

Jesus said, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” — Matthew 28:20

Worrying about the bill?

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19

Struggling to keep up with your treatment plan?

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” — Proverbs 16:3

Making progress?

“Blessed are those whose strength is in you.” — Psalms 84:5

When I was nine years old my grandfather passed away. The coroner was more than a little surprised to find my grandfather, a US Navy Veteran and advanced in years, still had all his real teeth. I’m not sure why our family was proud of that, but we were. Besides, it was a clear reminder of the old saying: “You don’t have to brush your teeth - just the ones you want to keep!” Sheriee Moneak is the author of 101 Ways to Ruin the Enemy’s Plans for Your Life (available on Amazon.com). Originally from Birmingham, AL, she’s an encourager who is currently pursuing a career as a dental hygienist.

Gò0dNews for Teens

The Generation of Champions

I

by Melanie Lewis

’ll be honest, when I was first asked to write an article for teens, I had to giggle a bit. After all, it’s been quite some time since I’ve experienced life as a teenager. Don’t laugh just yet, it’s coming for all of you eventually. As I began to research statistics and read through articles and blogs about teens, I experienced a variety of emotions. As a parent who has raised two teenagers myself, I was angered by the medias misrepresentation of you, horrified by the temptations that befall you every second of every day, shocked and mortified by the way that you’re often mistreated by a world that is supposed to love and encourage you, and deeply saddened by the fact that every morning before your feet hit the floor or you’ve taken a sip of your favorite latte, you’ve been stereotyped, judged and put in a box! I personally would like to apologize for all of the adults who have left you to clean up our messes and then judged you without giving you chance to speak for yourself. Shame on us! I am proud of your consistency and perseverance in spite of the odds being well stacked against you. I would love to high five and embrace every one of you. Hopefully this article will shine some light on the truth of who you really are and not what some of the world thinks you are. For instance studies show that teen pregnancy is down, drug and alcohol use is at the lowest in 10 years. You are volunteering more than ever and actually care about the world you live in contrary

to some of the secular media outlets. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back; you deserve it. I’m so encouraged by the statistics that I’ve uncovered on the web. My heart is touched by other positive actions I see in you. Sunday after Sunday at North Cleveland Church of God, I see hundreds of you with hands raised in worship, tears flowing down your cheeks. I see you praying for one another in altars filled with the hurting, the wounded, and the lost, singing your hearts out on stage for the Kingdom when you could be a million other places that the world offers. I see love and compassion for others as you serve is various ministries and the list goes on. I believe that God is raising up a generation of warriors and the battles that you have faced have only strengthened you for war. This reminds me of one of my favorite worship song’s lyrics “There’s an army rising up, to break every chain, break every chain.” So the next time the world tries to label you, let them know who you are. The sons and daughters of the most high king and that you are so loved! “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” — Philippians 1:6 Melanie Lewis is a mother of two, Linley Sullins and Jayce Lewis. What is Your Heart’s Desire?

A

by Teresa Mustar

s life races on, have you realized that there is something that you once “wanted” so badly that you couldn’t imagine not having it? The desires I am talking about are not “hopefully so” godly desires, but they are “must have” Godly desires. God places those desires within us. It is my personal opinion that those unfilled desires are the impetus to an emptiness that builds within us. That emptiness can only be filled with the love of Jesus unto eternal salvation and the obtainment of that godly desire. After years of deferred hope, is your heart sick? If so, don’t worry! Proverbs 13:12 says that there is good news! What is the desire of your heart? Is it impossible to achieve or is it difficult to achieve? When we truly allow God to work on our behalf, even the impossible things are made possible, especially when we add action to our beliefs.

◊ Isaiah 41:10 — Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. ◊ Mark 11:24 — Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive [them], and ye shall have [them]. ◊ Luke 18:27 — And he said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.” If your life depended on fulfilling this one heart’s desire, what changes would you need to make to move forward? Are you willing to make those changes? When can you start?

30 // December 2017

If you have: 1) Identified your unfilled heart’s desire, 2) Have earnestly evaluated the changes you would need to make in order to move forward, 3) Have made the choice to make those needed changes, 4) Are ready to move forward to fulfill your heart’s desire... Then here is the good news! When the desire comes, it is a tree of life! (Psalm 13:12b) Is your heart’s desire to complete your degree? There are numerous online ACICS accredited colleges out there. It doesn’t have to be local since it is online. I love my classes at Bryan College in Dayton, TN! Loans and grants may be available. The cost of getting the degree is typically offset with additional earnings. Gradually pay your school loans while earning at a higher pay rate for the remainder of your working life. You are worth it! The effort is worth it! Is your heart’s desire to help a child? There are many needs, just not enough responsible adults to meet those needs. Check with your local CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) Agency. Natalie Kelly in Athens, TN was a great help to my family. Consider foster parenting. Ask about adopting. There are young, as well as older children, praying for a stable family environment. Is that too big of an undertaking? Consider volunteering with a local youth group. Is your heart’s desire to go on a mission trip? I can refer you to people who organize mission trips. Please email me at support@personalvictory.org Teresa Mustar is the founder of www.personalvictory.org, a web site where Christians can share God’s good news of spiritual, physical, and financial victories with the world. The Secret to Having a Fantastic Marriage by Evelyn Bathe

I

came from a singing family and my husband did, too. So it was only natural when we met, that we would sing together. After we married, we even did some recording “projects” together (I say “projects” for the benefit of the younger readers who wouldn’t understand that we recorded records and cassettes!) Through the years, we’ve had many clashes and some marital discord, but as we’ve learned to blend our lives together, we’ve made pretty good music together. In 2013, researchers at a university in Sweden did a scientific study of people singing together. They found that the singers’ heart rates actually synchronized with each other, falling into a shared rhythm very quickly. Research also shows that singing together helps people bond more quickly than other activities, reduces stress and anxiety, and fosters feelings of pleasure. No wonder, then, that singing together in a marriage offers many residual benefits. Metaphorically speaking, however, I would hasten to tell you that the best way to live in harmony with your spouse is for each of you to attune yourselves to Christ. Then you will automatically be in tune with one another. In The Pursuit of God, A. W. Tozer said, “Has it ever occurred to you that one hundred pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other?” Christ alone is the standard whereby a couple can make beautiful music together. You may have seen or heard about marriage being like a triangle – God represented by the topmost point and the husband and wife represented by the two parallel points. As the husband and wife move closer to God, they will simultaneously move closer to each other.

Learning to blend, just like singing together, is important for a fantastic marriage. For instance, when two people marry they learn to blend family traditions from each side of the family, such as where to spend holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, what traditions they will continue, and what new traditions they will begin. It is combining and merging thoughts, plans, dreams, and qualities in order to create a more harmonious effect. This will require compromise, negotiation, and cooperation. It’s a give-and-take process! It’s being able to concede and to yield one’s own desires for the greater good. Having a sense of entitlement, so prevalent in our culture today, will result in discord in the marital relationship. When one spouse is unwilling to move or bend, then the sounds of their union will be dissonant and anything but pleasant. “Evergreen,” a song made popular by Barbara Streisand, portrays two people being one. But I think the Bible says it best: “...a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one” (Genesis 2:24 GNB). Little do couples realize when they marry that becoming one will take a lifetime. Learning the dynamics of blending will produce a sweet, melodious sound in God’s ears. Keep making beautiful music together. The beat goes on!

Gò0dNews for Homeschooling

O

A Call to Homeschool by Sharon Atkins

ur homeschool journey began around 19 years ago. During my first pregnancy, we made the decision to homeschool. What were we thinking? We knew nothing about homeschooling and we really didn’t know anyone that homeschooled. Was it my pregnant brain playing tricks on me or was it “the call”? We were a very busy couple. I was a full time nurse and worked twelve hour shifts. Charles was a business owner and worked out of town most of the time. How could we homeschool? Then came the Debbie-downers, when I told my coworkers we were planning to homeschool. “What about your child’s socialization? What about your child having friends? What about your child playing sports?” I can still see their faces and the sound of their voices when they asked their many questions. Those of you who homeschool know the questions and the facial expressions we get when we mention we homeschool. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust the lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your path.” That is what we did. Our life was very different when it was time to begin that first day of homeschool. After having our first child, I quit work to be a stay at home mom (that definitely was leaning on the Lord, when you give up a nurse’s income). Charles no longer ran his own business; he was employed by the Church of God. We had made two moves and were now living in Florida. God knew what our future would hold and I know it was “the call” and not my pregnant brain talking months earlier.

36 // December 2017

By the time we actually began the first year of homeschool, I had crossed paths with many homeschooling moms, my next door neighbor homeschooled five kids, and God had placed a public school teacher in our lives that helped us choose a curriculum that worked for us. Our first year was shaky! I had a new born baby, I was new to homeschooling, and we lived through three major hurricanes in the first few months of school. The second year was an adventure. We began the year living on a disaster relief site in Slidell, LA. That alone was an education in and of itself. My children met lots of people, had lots of socialization and loved helping others. By trusting the Lord and walking in his call to homeschool, my oldest child has had the opportunity at the age of 18 to do and see more than the average person in their 70’s. He has had much more socialization than the average college graduate. The call to homeschool has been right for our family and an amazing experience. I have loved seeing my children begin to understand certain concepts and seeing the light bulb go on when they finally conquer that math problem. Our homeschool is unlike others. For our family it is all about instilling a desire to learn. That has been a challenge since each child is different. I have been far from the perfect homeschool mom, but am grateful for the opportunity and thankful we chose to accept the call to homeschool. If God is calling your family to homeschool, don’t listen to those Debbie-downers, trust the Lord! He will never lead you astray. Sharon Atkins is married to the love of her life and best friend, Charles. They have 2 amazing children, Harrison and Breleigh. Sharon desires to be an encourager of others and to live her life pleasing unto the Lord.

If you have varicose veins, it is crucial to consult with a physician who specializes in vein disease for review and options. lower extremities. Due to the location and size of the thrombus, a DVT clot can potentially break loose and travel to the lungs, resulting in a pulmonary embolism (PE). Suspicion of DVT requires immediate medical attention. In fact, each year, an estimated 200,000 people die from PE as a result of the detached blood clot DVT blocking blood flow to the lungs as a PE.

Symptoms and Treatment When the presence of varicose veins are accompanied by symptoms such as pain, swelling, redness, or a sensation of warmth in the lower extremities, it is possible SVT or DVT is present. The best way to evaluate and diagnose SVT and DVT is by ultrasound examination. SVT, DVT thrombosis can only be detected through a physical exam involving focus venous ultrasound examination by a physician skilled in ultrasound interpretation and treating venous disease. Treatment of SVT is usually local care with moist heat along with Aspirin or NSAID medications, like Motrin. Treatment of DVT typically includes prescribing blood thinning agents such as Coumadin.

developing SVT and DVT. To name a few, varicose veins, surgery [especially orthopedic surgery of the lower extremities], prolonged bed rest, malignancy, and injury can all increase the likelihood of SVT and DVT. Some patients may have family genetic tendencies for thrombosis: coagulopathy. Coagulopathy can be screened by a battery of blood tests as well as a genetic screen. Don't let untreated varicose veins progress into a lifethreatening condition. With today's advancing technology, patients with vein disease have many options. Minimally invasive vein treatments like Radiofrequency vein closure (VNUS) and endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) have almost eliminated the need for more invasive procedures such as painful vein striping surgery. Even better, these procedures are covered by most major insurance providers when varicose veins cause symptoms addressing medical necessity. Dr. James E. White is a board-certified General Surgeon by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Surgeons. His office, Advanced Surgical Concepts (ASC) is located at 2290 Ogletree Ave, Suite 112 in the Hamilton Office Park across from the Hamilton YMCA. ASC offers a variety of cosmetic procedures including varicose vein procedures, laser skin resurfacing, facial fillers, minimal invasive surgery and liposculpture. 423-648- 4011 or visit www. advsurgical.com for a complimentary consultation.

Real Peace

by Dorothy Teague n this time of turmoil, with global terrorism, rioting, fires, floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes, it seems that the enemy is lurking behind every door. Indeed, satan is roaming this earth, seeking to devour us at every turn. The world is looking everywhere for peace to no avail. But, there is one who can give us real peace and that is Jesus Christ. He equips us with his word and prayer to find this peace. Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” We are not to worry about everything, but to pray about everything. God already knows our needs and is working on them before we even ask (Matt. 6:8). But, he likes for us to ask out of a grateful heart, as a child would to their father. As Jesus departed from his disciples in John 14:27, he said, “My peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Only the peace of God can take away fear and dread from our hearts when we see killing in the streets, face a dreaded disease, lose a loved one, or feel all alone. God’s peace is so big we can’t even wrap our minds around it! When my ex-husband told me he was leaving me, I felt like my world had ended, but the day he pulled out of the drive, I felt an overwhelming peace descend on me. It was like arms gathered around and hugged me. God was holding me, comforting me. His peace truly does defy all understanding! have more time to reach others who do not know him. now. Depending on your age, snow can mean hours of sledding, snowball fights, and the construction of the tallest snowman in the neighborhood, or it can mean freezing cold weather, wet clothes, and treacherous driving conditions. Tennessee has beautiful mountains, warm weather, and The Vols, but it sure does not have snow. I grew up in northern Ohio just a few miles from what was called “the snow belt.” During the winter, my sister and I would bundle up against the cold and spend hours out in the deep snow. One year, we built a snow fort with 5-foot high walls. Another year, we had so much snow that just a snowman would not do—we decided to build a whole snow zoo, complete with a 3-foot llama. Winter was a time when our imaginations would run wild in a white wilderness, where everything was uniformly covered with a blanket of white. In Isaiah 1:18, God told the wayward house of Judah, “Come now, and let us reason together…. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Judah’s sins were the same color as the blood that filled up their hands (v.15), but God wanted their sins to become as white as the whitest thing they knew—snow—to show their purity and right relationship with Him. It did not matter the horrible things they had done against God or against their fellow man. If they would just come to Him, He would forgive them, and they would “eat the good of the land” (v. 19). As you eat these snowball cookies, let them be a reminder not only of any snowy winters you may have experienced but also of God’s desire to make you white and pure as snow.

Ingredients

1 c. walnuts 1 c. unsalted butter, softened ½ c. honey 2 c. all-purpose flour, or 2¼ c. freshly ground soft white wheat 1/3 c. sour cream 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract ¼ tsp. salt ½ c. confectioners sugar

Directions

◊ Preheat the oven to 350°F. ◊ In a 10-inch skillet, lightly toast the walnuts over medium heat, frequently shaking the skillet. Set aside to allow the walnuts to cool. After they have cooled, finely chop the walnut pieces.

◊ In a large bowl, beat the butter and honey with

an electric mixer on low until blended. Increase the speed to high and beat for 5 minutes until light and fluffy.

◊ Gradually beat in the flour, sour cream, chopped walnuts, vanilla extract, and salt.

◊ Shape the dough into 1” balls and place them

about 1” apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. (If the dough is too sticky to handle, divide the dough in half, wrap each part with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until the dough is firm enough to handle, about 1 hour.)

◊ Bake 20-25 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly browned around the edges.

◊ Let them cool for 2 minutes, then gently roll

the warm cookies, one at a time, in a small bowl of confectioners sugar.

◊ Place the cookies on wire

racks to cool completely. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

Holiday Gift Guide

Keep the Little Ones in Your Life Happy and Safe

F

by Ronnie Hall

ew things are more fun than buying toys for the children we love during the holidays, and often, shopping for our little ones brings us as much joy as it does them. But before you plunge into toy-buying this holiday season, Starr Regional Medical Center urges you to keep safety top-of-mind and consider the following facts and shopping tips before you spend. In 2014, researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital released the findings of a study that analyzed more than 20 years’ worth of children’s safety data. They found that between 1990 and 2011, there were more than 3.2 million toy-related injuries, or more than 150,000 per year. Furthermore, they concluded that in 2011, a child was seen in an emergency room for these injuries every three minutes. “These accidents are devastating for children and their families, especially when they take place during the holidays,” says Ronnie Hall, Chief Nursing Officer. “To prevent these incidents from occurring, we must be mindful of potential hazards and be conscientious about selecting age-appropriate toys to help keep children safe and healthy.” Hall offers the following tips as you head for the toy store: Avoid toys with small parts — For children three years and younger, avoid buying toys that may contain small parts. Toddlers tend to put anything in sight into their mouths, and parts that can fit inside a toilet paper role can cause choking if swallowed. Furthermore, toddlers also are fond of putting objects in their ears and noses – two more good reasons to stay away from anything containing small parts. Check for sturdiness — Children of all ages are anything but gentle with their toys. Look for quality design and construction in all toys for all ages. Only buy toys that seem durable and able to withstand impact and/or chewing without breaking or splintering. Make sure toys aren’t too loud — Whether it’s a new electronic device for your son or a karaoke machine for your daughter, kids love devices and toys that

44 // December 2017

play music or make noise. However, many of these toys are as loud as car horns and can cause ear damage when children hold them to their ears, listen through earbuds or even play with them at an appropriate distance from the ear. Remember the helmet — If you are thinking about buying your child a new scooter, roller skates, or bike, make sure you also remember the helmet and other appropriate safety gear. These toys are fun, but they can also go fast and lead to hard falls. Check for recalls — In 2015, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled hundreds of thousands of units of toys for various safety reasons. To make sure the toys you are buying are safe, check the latest recalls on the CPSC website. Read the label — A great thing about toy shopping now is that almost every toy intended for children 12 years old and under includes the recommended age range. For older children, be wary of labels indicating “supervision required.” For more information on toy safety and a list of the latest recalls, visit www.cpsc.gov.

Happy shopping and Merry Christmas!

“W

Why? by Yokila Parris

hy?” is a question most of us ask several times in our lives. Why does one parent stay while the other leaves? Why does one person die while the other lives? Why is one person sick when the other is healed? Why do some couples have children when others can’t? Why do some steal while others give? Why are some people bullies and others are victims? Why do some murder while others fight to save lives? Why do some believe in God but others deny His existence? I have spent over 25 years praying for my Dad to be delivered from the bonds of Satan. I will never give up on him to turn to God. I used to find myself resenting people that had a good father figure. I still to this day don’t understand why God chose the path for my life that He did, but I know that it has given me determination in my own marriage. I am very thankful for a wonderful Christian husband who loves his family. Unfortunately, God doesn’t tell us all the whys of life. He wants us to trust Him for who He is and what He is. That’s our first step to trusting the one true God. When we stop questioning all the chaos that happens and trust that God knows what we need when we need it. That is when we will finally have complete peace that surpasses all understanding. We will be able to let go of all the anger and bitterness that we may hold in our hearts. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In

46 // December 2017

all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (KJV). However, the frustrations and whys, most of the time, can turn into our biggest blessings. Like a mother travailing during delivery, once our prayers are answered, we know it was worth the wait. My frustration in seeing my sister turn to meth has turned into seeing God work in her life, now she is 15 months drug free! That helps me realize that God does hear and answer our prayers. Seeing friends that have prayed for a baby to only find their blessing comes from adoption. Personally, I have been able to take in children that were once neglected and unwanted, giving them a home and a family, loving them just like my own. Even when we don’t understand the situation at all, do not give up! Pray for those lost parents, siblings, and family members. Call your child’s name out to a holy and righteous God. Pray for your unborn baby. Pray for those who use you and reject you. Pray for those coworkers who don’t believe. Pray for your classmates who bully you for what you stand for. Pray for the person God is sending to witness to your loved ones. Remember God knows why, we don’t have to. Luke 18:1 says, “That men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” My name is Yokila Parris. Scott and I will celebrate 13 years of marriage in October. I have been a stay-at-home mom for 10 years. We are devoted members of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tn, where my husband has been a deacon for 8 years. We have 5 wonderful children that love the Lord named Dade, Kalob, Jaylen, Elijah and Arianna. God is good all the time and all the time God is good.

Is it Right or Wrong to Love Yourself? by Mike Shreve

I

n Matthew 22:35-40 (NKJV) we find the story of a lawyer (an expert in Moses’ law) who asked the Messiah a challenging question: “Teacher, which is the great commandment of the law?” Coming up with an answer was a great challenge. Jesus had to choose from 613 commandments in the Torah. Yet in a moment, He pinpointed the most powerful, most excellent, most important commandment of all: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” Strangely, He did not end with that statement. There was another commandment, so related, so important, so essential to our spiritual development that He added: “This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” At one point in my spiritual journey, I stumbled over the last two words of this mandate, because they seemed to be a complete contradiction of another passage of Scripture, Paul’s warning to Timothy concerning the age in which we live:

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without selfcontrol, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! —2 Timothy 3:1-5

50 // December 2017

In this passage, one of the most evident signs that human beings have strayed from the truth is the observation that they become “lovers of themselves.” This will indicate that the world is teetering on the edge of utter chaos and final judgments from God. Yet Jesus gave the mandate to His followers, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” upholding that self-love is a necessary part of a balanced and healthy spiritual life. How can this be? How can something be the epitome of evil and the epitome of good simultaneously? When I was praying about this paradox, the Holy Spirit awakened the answer within my heart. Two things—first, it is necessary to see the context in which the statements are made, and second, it is necessary to see the order in which self-love is mentioned. In Paul’s exhortation, love of self comes first, then love of money, then love of pleasure, while it is disconnected completely from the love of God. This kind of self-love is self-willed, self-serving, selfindulging, prideful, and corrupt. Notice that the person consumed with this kind of egotism is also described as being “unloving.” In Jesus’ teaching, love for God comes first; love for others is second, then love of self comes last. In this context, self-love means self-acceptance (resulting from a realization of God’s forgiveness and acceptance toward His offspring) instead of self-condemnation and self-loathing (that stem from a sense of guilt and unworthiness). When we can view ourselves under the canopy of God’s love, we tend to look at others the same way. So, it is only in this order and grouped in this way that self-love becomes balanced, clean, pure, right and praiseworthy. The mystery is solved. Mike Shreve has been teaching God’s Word since 1971. Four Hours with the Father by Jennie Hawkins

he date was October 13th, 2001, and life took a drastic and life-altering change for me. The crunch of metal, plastic, and glass was ear piercing as my stopped car was rear ended by a young driver speeding down the highway in excess of 85 miles per hour. In the middle of this pile of twisted automobile, my life slowly ebbed like an early morning tide. I cannot tell you precisely when my heart stopped and my breathing ceased. But, I can tell you that a certain peace flooded by soul. I saw no lush pastures, no bright light, nor crystal waterfalls. I was suddenly surrounded by a peace that passed human recognition, and love! I experienced what it was like to be held in the arms of a loving father whose love always existed and was never-ending. Not a word was spoken; none was needed. I was secure in the strongest, most protective arms that had ever held me. I was safe! Then, suddenly, I returned and awoke to the most excruciating pain I had ever felt. Little did I know that hospital authorities were gathering information from my husband for my death certificate. It had been four hours since the paramedics removed my lifeless body from the scene of the accident. Four hours in the loving embrace of the Father seemed less than four minutes. But the pain brought a sharp contrast to the peace I had been feeling. Miraculously, I had no broken bones although the doctors said the impact on my body was equivalent to falling to earth from a ten-story building.

52 // December 2017

Tubes and wires shackled me to an unwanted hospital bed and would continue to do so for 13 years. Bariatric beds, wheelchairs, and a recliner became my everyday home. My everyday routine including taking twenty-two prescription medicines, three of which were the most potent pain meds that could be legally prescribed. Attending church was impossible since getting dressed was beyond my capabilities. However, over time and with help from my husband, I could manage to get dressed for an occasional night service. During one such service, fate would once again change my life. At the altar call that night I went forward seeking to get closer to God, not to seek a healing. God saw fit to do both. As the minister laid her hands on my head, I was overcome by the power of the Most High and found myself lying on the floor. After a few minutes, I walked around the sanctuary on my own for the first time in thirteen years. As I walked, I heard the voice of the Lord speak to me that for my suffering He would reward me with a ministry that far exceeded my dreams. Today, I am engaged in that ministry. Through rescue ministry and ladies conferences like Daughters of Promise TN, I am privileged to fulfill God’s call on my life to meet the great commission to “go into all the world and make disciples.” Jennie Hawkins is married to evangelist James L. One Powerful Bible Study Method

I

by Kelly McDonald, Jr.

n this article, I would like to share with you a very simple, yet powerful method to study the Bible. Reading the Bible through every year has increased my knowledge and understanding of God’s Word. I simply start in Genesis and try to go all the way through Revelation in 12 months. The first time you read through the Bible, just try to piece together the general story line. Don’t try to figure out every detail. That will make it easier for you. Throughout your year, you will be amazed at how God will speak to you as you read. No matter what part of the Bible you are reading in at a given point in the year, you will find something fresh for your situation. When you read the Bible, I recommend having a notebook handy. As you read, you will notice certain Scriptures that really apply to your life. Write them down and date the entry. As time goes on, these entries will be precious to you. Your second time reading through the Bible, you will begin to make connections between different sections. Moreover, you will begin to see themes and patterns. Your third time will deepen these patterns. These get deeper and deeper each subsequent time you read through the Bible. No matter what year you are in, always write down the things that stick out to you. You will need them later on! The awesome thing about God is that He prepares us for trials and tough times before they ever come. One way He does this is by reading His Word.

54 // December 2017

Occasionally, you will have days where you don’t feel or think you are getting anything out of your reading time. This is where your faith comes into play. You must have faith that God is going to help you understand the Bible. You must trust that He will “download” the Word into your heart and mind. To help with this, I pray before I read the Bible. Prayer is your request to God. Once you have prayed and asked God to help you understand the Bible, reading the Word will be effective. He is faithful, and He will do it. There are various methods to read the Bible through every year. In one method, you can read the Bible for 30 minutes every day, even if it is divided up into segments throughout the day. Others recommend reading four chapters a day. Find a way to read the Bible that works for you. Sometimes you will feel discouraged from reading the Bible. This is part of spiritual warfare. Satan definitely wants to make you think that you don’t need the Bible. I have found in these moments just to read it anyways. This study method takes a little discipline, but it will yield huge results. You will be amazed at the spiritual growth you will experience. It will change your life; I know it has truly transformed mine. Kelly McDonald, Jr. is an international Evangelist with Hungry Hearts Ministries and pastors a church in Cleveland. He has written a combined total of 40 books and booklets on pursuing a deeper relationship with Jesus. www.hungryheartsministry.com
