Letter from the Chairman

4

Dear Valued Stakeholder, The environment and waste management industry has become a global concern which society engages in and explores new and on-going initiatives. From recycling to renewable energy sources, countries around the world are transforming their long-term goals to search for and recruit innovative projects to sustain their environmental future. Four years ago, Bee’ah started as a waste management company, with three employees, to simply manage the waste generated by our city of Sharjah. Today, we have grown to an integrated environmental and waste management company with world-class facilities, and are not only disposing of waste, but are turning it into valuable resources for re-use in our economy. With a team of 2,000 devoted employees, each a leader for environmental change, and assets under management of over AED 4 million, Bee’ah has become one of the leading environmentally responsible companies in the UAE. Our company continues to work in partnership with the Sharjah City Municipality to establish ongoing programmes and procedures that will ensure Sharjah remains a shining example of an Emirate that not only truly cares about its environment, but acts upon its concern, both locally and regionally. Adopting its vision to become the best environmental management company in emerging markets, Bee’ah’s next stage of expansion includes taking its offerings beyond Sharjah and into other regions that require the knowledge and expertise available to sustain their environmental future.

Yours sincerely,

H.E. Salim Al Owais Chairman of Bee’ah

A Discussion with the chief executive officer

10

Since its inception, Bee’ah has successfully developed and built an integrated infrastructure, and implemented programmes within Sharjah relating directly to waste management, leading it to become a company of outstanding environmental, waste management and city beautification services. These include: collection and storage, recycling, city beautification, education and outreach awareness programmes, landfill reengineering and policy development. The company’s vision led to its many accomplishments such as the launch of its cleaning arm, Tandeef and its world-class recycling facilities – from the Material Recovery Facility to the Tyre Recycling Facility to the Construction and Demolition Waste Recycling Facility – all meeting international standards and best practices, led by a team of global waste management experts. At the end of 2010, Khaled Al Huraimel was officially appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Bee’ah, to oversee the company’s direction to meet its short and long-term goals in leading environmental change.

a world-class facility and the first of its kind in the Middle East, employing an environmentally-friendly cryogenics process. The facility recycles the tyres into crumb rubber which can be incorporated with asphalt to create quieter roads or turned into rubber tiles for use as jogging tracks, children’s playgrounds and many other applications. Amongst these, Bee’ah has had many other achievements such as the start of the operations of the Construction and Demolition Waste Recycling Facility and the launch of its youth education initiative, the Bee’ah School of Environment, as well as numerous community awareness initiatives and events.

Q: 2010 was a very exciting year for Bee’ah. What would you say were the greatest achievements of the year? A: 2010 was indeed a very exciting year for us, and has been marked by several milestones. I would say 2010 was the operational kick-off year of leading the environmental change. To begin with, we established the street cleaning and city beautification arm, Tandeef in January by servicing Sector 7, Al Majaz area – the largest and home to about 300,000 of Sharjah’s nearly 1 million residents. In the following months we added Sectors 4 and 5; and by the end of 2010, we were servicing over 800,000 residents in 10 sectors out of 12, and collecting over 600,000 tonnes of non-hazardous municipal waste, and converting it to valuable raw materials, to re-use in our economy. To complement this service, Bee’ah started operations of its Material Recovery Facility (MRF), a specialised plant that receives, segregates and prepares recyclable materials; which is located at the Waste Management Complex in Al Saj’ah. The MRF occupies a space of 220,000 square feet, is 4 storeys high, has a capacity to process 500,000 tonnes of waste annually, and is the largest in the Middle East and the third largest in the world. Bee’ah also began recycling the 8 million tyres at the Al Saj’ah Landfill through the Tyre Recycling Facility (TRF),

Q: Are you helping to educate the community to reduce their waste? A: Bee’ah is committed to the wellbeing of the environment and improvement of the quality of life for each and every member of the community, which includes everyone from residents, students and working professionals. Bee’ah started in 2007 with the introduction of 3-stream pedestrian recyclers throughout various prime locations in the city of Sharjah. These 3-stream recyclers consist of three separate containers for paper and cardboard, plastic and aluminum, and all other waste. To further educate our community on environmental sustainability, we are providing recycling messages on these recyclers to raise awareness and encourage the public to recycle. Furthermore, people in Sharjah are now able to adopt recycling at home, at work, in schools and in the streets through the introduction of residential totes, blue bins and gobi bins respectively. In 2011, recycling depots will also be installed in Co-ops around Sharjah to provide easy access for residents to dispose of their recyclables. As educating the public on recycling is vital for a sustainable environment and in line with our mandate

11

12

to prepare educational programmes, we launched the Bee’ah School of Environment (BSOE), in support of the Sharjah Education Zone, and sponsored by various corporate partners. Reaching 145 schools in Sharjah and education 100,000 students, the BSOE is a comprehensive, bilingual (English and Arabic) educational initiative that consists of a range of engaging, fun and interactive environmental activities and lesson plans that are designed to be applied in classrooms and/or eco-clubs. Bee’ah also provides recycling programmes and training to promote source segregation, ultimately diverting more waste from the landfill to be recycled. Such trainings include in-office workshops to encourage government institutions and organization to ‘green the office’ and reduce their carbon footprint. We also aim to implement residential recycling programmes for residents at residential towers to segregate their waste and recycle. This will be the first of its kind in the UAE, which we hope to roll out by the end of 2011. As part of our dedication towards the environment, it is Bee’ah’s responsibility to provide our community with environmental and waste management solutions to develop a ‘greener future generation’. Q: Looking forward, you have set ambitious goals for the company, such as increasing the waste diversion rate from the landfill. What will Bee’ah’s business look like ten years from now? A: I see Bee’ah as the leading integrated environmental and waste management solutions provider, helping our community and customers at the front end of their process, to reduce their waste, minimize their energy consumption and provide them with the necessary infrastructure to recycle. Not only are we creating financial benefits from our relationships and these valuable raw materials, but the beauty of it is that, at the same time, we’re helping to save the planet! We recently signed a long-term working arrangement with the Sharjah Municipality which will see Bee’ah manage landfill site operations for the next 20 years throughout the entire Emirate of Sharjah. Alongside this agreement, Tandeef is commissioned to provide services for the City of Sharjah for a period of 15 years to ensure a cost-effective and environmentally sound solid waste collection and city beautification service to all the residents.

We are currently recycling e-waste using secure and environmentally conscious solutions in the WMC at Al Saj’ah. By continuing to work in collaboration with business affiliates and partners, within the next 10 years, we see us become an important contributor to recycling e-waste within the Middle East environment and waste management industry. In line with Bee’ah’s growth strategy to be a global leader for creating positive environmental change throughout the Middle East, the development of the Bee’ah Environmental Research Centre aims to be a focal point for environmental laboratory services which connects people around the world with vital environmental information. This will include the monitoring of our ecosystem, such as the air and water quality, and we aim to create programmes to raise public awareness on the importance of their preservation by using this knowledge. Moreover, we will invest in the state-of-the-art technology to convert waste to energy for re-use in our economy, and will eventually reduce the amount of landfill space utilised within our country. Amongst this, Bee’ah is exploring other environmental management potentials in the coming 10 years. This demonstrates the importance of Bee’ah’s contributions towards the ‘green movement’ today, and ensures that the company will continue to build the necessary infrastructure to meet our stakeholders’ expectations for tomorrow.

Our Mandate & Company Philosophy The Emiri Decree – Fulfilling our Mandate Emiri Decree Number (24) for the year 2007. Regarding the establishment of Bee’ah states in Article 4 that the objectives for which the company is established are: • To manage the household wastes (Municipality’s solid wastes) including electrical apparatus, computers and office wastes, and metal wastes that are collected from the Emirate of Sharjah, by way of recycling and marketing such wastes through a comprehensive marketing plan. • To manage the activities and outputs of the existing Sharjah waste sorting facility at the Sharjah Waste Transfer Station on an exclusive basis or by authorization from it, and it is entitled to collect the resulting financial amounts of that. • To propose a comprehensive environmental training and education plan. • To spread environmental awareness for all categories of society and to prepare learning programs for children and youths in participation to create a clean society.

Contained within the notion of living better and using less is the idea that as individuals, families, communities and a society we can improve our environment, while at the same time enhancing our standard of living and overall quality of life. Being at the forefront of positive environmental change, Bee’ah aims to turn material and physical waste into recycled resources that can be re-used by the community. Thus, the company is working towards helping people and economies prosper while using fewer inputs. Bee’ah addresses this in many ways: the most obvious is through investing in infrastructure and sophisticated management techniques to turn the present waste stream into new input resources for the economy. Bee’ah’s commitment to the environment and to economic prosperity is both an operational imperative and an ethical principle. Bee’ah has a responsibility to not only build the systems and infrastructure required for such a transition, but also to foster the leadership and social change required to make it successful.

Our Company Philosophy Live better… Use less This simple and straightforward statement is powerful and empowering, and means that an improved environment and an increased standard of living are possible simultaneously.

Our Operations 36

The main geographic presence of Bee’ah is within the Emirate of Sharjah. Currently operations are focused on the city of Sharjah with future plans to expand across other main cities including Dhaid, Dibba, Kalba, Khor Fakkan, Madam, Meleha. Across these main cities will be the expansion of core business operations including Tandeef collections and landfill management in 2011. Similarly other services will be included in the expansion allowing Bee’ah to provide a complete product and service offering within the Emirate of Sharjah. Other than the Emirate of Sharjah, Bee’ah has been actively expanding its products and services to other emirates including Ajman. The expansion into Ajman has reached advanced stages and will likely involve the introduction of Tandeef collection services and landfill management. Other emirates are possible markets for Bee’ah as long as the opportunities present a profitable entry.

Tandeef Tandeef, a division of Bee’ah, was officially launched in January 2010 to provide waste collection and city beautification for the Emirate of Sharjah. Tandeef plays a vital role in helping Bee’ah become the leading environmental and waste management company in the region, providing coherent and sustainable environmental solutions to meet the challenges of the community it serves.

Tandeef currently employs 281 employees and manages and operates 142 superior and purposespecific vehicles in its efforts to make Sharjah one of the most livable cities in the region. In an effort to reduce their carbon footprint and operate more efficiently, Tandeef established a waste transfer station within Sharjah City’s boundaries. Waste is collected from residential, commercial and pedestrian areas using 4 to 8 tonne trucks and is taken to the transfer station. From there, fully automated waste transfer vehicles (40 tonne trucks) transport the waste to the Bee’ah Waste Management Complex - Al Saj’ah. The introduction of waste transfer stations and the 40-tonne trucks decreased the number of trips need to transfer the waste to the Bee’ah Waste Management Complex - Al Saj’ah from approximately 900 trips a day to an average of 100 daily trips.

Pedestrian waste collection involves emptying the 1,750 3 stream recycling bins currently located around Sharjah. Tandeef is working on setting up alternative methods of waste collection such as placement of community recycling centers and depots at commercial and residential units and using source sorting containers.

Bee’ah Waste Management Complex Al Saj’ah The Bee’ah Waste Management Complex - Al Saj’ah (WMC), located at a fair distance from the heart of the city, accepts municipal and commercial waste from the Emirate of Sharjah. The management of the Bee’ah Waste Management Complex - Al Saj’ah was handed over to Bee’ah in 2009. At the end of 2010, the team finalized a three year agreement on a mobile plant, and prepared a proposal for construction of a new landfill cell and upgrade of liquid waste treatment lagoons. Also, a new contract for the labor camp was finalized resulting in reduced costs. The Operations team also began operating a second shredder at the Tyre Recycling Facility. With regards to their operating times, the Operations team are looking at introducing a 2nd shift at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in order to increase the recovery rate. For a limited period, the MRF operated for 24 hours in order to reduce the backlog of waste at the transfer station. Moreover, negotiations are under-way for a new permitting process on hazardous waste by Bee’ah and Sharjah City Municipality.

44

For 2011, Operations is working on long-term projects for wood biomass fuel with La Farge, in order to provide a process outlet for approximately 110,000 tonnes of wood, currently stored at the WMC. Moreover, in order to settle the issue of waste-scavenging activities, which are causing profit and revenue losses, the team will be setting up an anti-scavenging task force to combat illegal scavengers. Operations will also organize facility staff to support Tandeef management to add strength and experience to their operations, while key mechanical skills are being transferred systematically to Tandeef. The majority of Bee’ah and municipality-owned veheicles were replaced with hired equipment, so as to reduce the operating cost incurred by maintenance activities. The Operations management will set a number of meetings with prospective clients, to create sustainable solutions for the management of the WMC at Al Saj’ah. Wekaya will provide medical waste as part of the landfill operations; The Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) has requested for a proposal from Bee’ah to cooperate, in order to provide temporary solutions for waste management in the Northern Emirates and to plan and develop facilities for the long-term and for the sustainable collection and treatment of waste.

Material Recovery Facility The Bee’ah MRF is a sorting plant that separates recyclable materials using state-of-the-art technology, industry best practices and a team of highly trained staff. The MRF started operations in the first quarter of 2010 and currently operates one 8 hour shift receiving between 18,000 and 20,000 tonnes of MSW per month. It is the largest facility in the Middle East and the third largest in the world. The materials that come to the MRF are from 3 sources. Bee’ah sells the recyclable material it recovers mainly to the local market. International markets are only considered when no local buyers exist. Bee’ah currently has markets for the following items: • Aluminum cans • PET clear plastic • PET green plastic • Mixed plastics • Mixed paper • OCC Cardboard • Steel cans

MRF Highlights

• Bee’ah owns, manages & operates the world’s third largest Material Recovery Facility • The MRF’s capacity is the largest in the Middle East at 500,000 tonnes annually • The MRF is designed to adhere to the principle of cost control and minimization • Recyclable separation is done through a combination of manual and mechanical sorting • All MRF employees receive health and safety awareness training and are trained on product identification • All MRF employees are required to wear personal protective equipment at all times • The number of employees working at the MRF in 2010 was approximately 130

Tyre Recycling Facility There are currently more than 8 million tyres stored at the WMC and there are about 2,500 new tyres coming in daily. These tyres consume valuable land space, act as a fire hazard, and when co-mingled with garbage, provide a habitat for mosquitoes, rats and other vermin. To curtail the adverse effects of sending tyres to landfill, Bee’ah built a state of the art cryogenic tyre recycling facility. In the cryogenic process, tyres are cut using a shredder to sizes of around 50 mm. The shreds are then fed into a freezing chamber where the rubber is subjected to liquid nitrogen to make it as brittle as glass and is then crushed into very fine particles by cracker mills. Steel and fibers are separated from the rubber using magnetic separators and are sold separately. The rubber can then reduced to sizes varying between 0.6mm in size to 4mm and can be packaged into 4 required output sizes. The whole process takes approximately 40 minutes.

Our BUSINESS Development & Strategy 50

The Business Development & Strategy team was busy in 2010 finalising the 2011 Business plan, which included Bee’ah’s objectives and departmental objectives for 2011. The team also finalized a report on Waste Management in the UAE for UN-ESCWA, as well as the E-Waste Strategy for Bee’ah. In addition, the Project Management team worked to coordinate for the Dubai Waste Management Tender and the development of the Ajman Waste Management Proposal.

In addition to the sales of Tandeef, the department will take over the sales from the Operations department, which will also in turn make the company more commercially focused in regards to the sales of the MRF, TRF, CDW and other landfill materials. For both Tandeef and landfill sales, the initial step is to develop detailed sales procedures and structures which expect to be implemented in 2011.

In 2011, the team will take over the Commercial sales from Tandeef, in addition to the Document Shredding sales. The first step will be to hire a full sales force that is capable of achieving commercial collection sales with commercial entities in Sharjah. This restructure aims to make Bee’ah more commercially focused.

51

TRF Sales Remarks: Crumb Rubber: • Crumb rubber sales have improved and will hopefully continue improving this year. • The challenge lies in the 14-30 and -30 mesh sizes, as prospects have some issues with white speckles and our cryogenic prices being above ambient market price. • The additional challenge lies in the fact that the production of these four crumb rubber grades cannot be tailored to market demand. • The sales team has also looked into different rubber applications to help utilize of production, and have approached several sports contractors in order to use our rubber in jogging tracks. Shreds: • Sales of shreds have commenced and currently all production is being sold. It has proven to be a very profitable product with huge demand in the market and the team is looking into increasing sales by increasing production capacity of these issues. Tiles: • The team is hoping to improve on the sale of tiles. The challenge with tiles is the shape; the team receives inquiries on whether they can manufacture different shapes and different thicknesses. Developing leads with AD municipality, horse stables.

52

Asphalt Rubber: • The team has been in talks for the last 2 months with Abu Dhabi Municipality in regards to the construction of the first Asphalt Rubber pilot project. Issues: • Certificate of Origin for our rubber products is essential at this stage; the team can then start exporting our material and opening new markets, and will assist us in clearing out the available stock of different sizes. Our legal department is working on this.

Bee’ah will build cooperative partnerships with organizations such as the Sharjah Police, to ensure that its dedicated task-force patrols collection areas in the Emirate of Sharjah, investigates individuals going through municipal containers and deals with these illegal immigrants in accordance to the UAE regulations.

Bee’ah expansion throughout the Emirate of Sharjah Bee’ah is in its final stages into the East Coast of the Emirate of Sharjah, as well as plans to develop waste management and recycling operations in Khor Fakkan, Kalba, Dibba Al Hisn and surrounding areas. Bee’ah’s operational geographic expansion to provide waste management and recycling services in the East Coast region is in line with the vision and directions of His Highnes Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi – Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah. Residential Recycling Programmes and Training As part of our responsibility towards the environment, Bee’ah provides recycling programmes and training to promote source segregation, ultimately diverting more waste from the landfill to be recycled. Bee’ah is currently conducting pilot programmes for residential recycling. This programme is designed to be very simple and non-intrusive to the day-to-day activities of residential tower residents. The tenants are provided with recycling bins and totes in which dry paper, plastic, aluminum, and other recyclable products should be deposited. The bins and totes are placed in the garbage room on each floor where they are collected. By the end of 2011, Bee’ah plans to roll out the UAE’s first residential recycling programme in a select Sector within the city of Sharjah, in the aim to implement the programme throughout the whole city by 2012.

E-Waste Bee’ah currently provides both secure and environmentally conscious solutions for the disposal of hazardous consumer goods and counterfeits by collecting and transporting them to the Bee’ah Waste Management Complex (WMC) in Al-Saj’ah for dismantling and recycling of parts. Bee’ah also offers its clients data destruction services by using the latest in recycling technology to safely destroy data depending on the conditions of the HDD (Hard Disk

70

Drive), and security policies. To dispose of data safely, Bee’ah uses a variety of methods, that use certified data wipe-up software, degaussing (or damaging the magnetic field in the HDD), and/or physically destroying the HDD. This service is carried out on site at the WMC, however no HDD’s leave client facilities before all data gets permanently destroyed. Bee’ah can also destroy DLT & LTO tapes, flash memories, CD’s, DVD’s, and more. A destruction certification is provided, as proof that all materials have been processed in an environmentally compliant manner following our zero-landfill policy, whereby nothing is dumped into a landfill and everything is processed according to sound environmental recycling standards. Managed Print Services (MPS) are designed to assist businesses in minimizing the costs associated with printing, increase productivity and reduce energy and material consumption. Based on each company’s requirements, MPS will service, maintain, and improve all the printing fleet. It involves monitoring and assessing the systems to make sure they run more efficiently, checking the performance of printers and installing software that will control all of the printers and send a warning message when something goes wrong. Bee’ah aims to continue to work in collaboration with business affiliates and partners, specialising in e-waste recycling, to become an important contributor to recycling e-waste in Sharjah and the UAE.

Waste to Energy While alternative energy resources are being researched, refined and much debated about by experts in the field, waste to energy technology is an important source which must be explored and utilized. Once implemented, it could dramatically improve the country’s waste disposal issues especially as landfill space is expected to become limited due to our increasing population. Bee’ah has been working with consultants to determine the best way to harness the substantial amounts of energy in waste to create electricity and fuel for re-use in our economy.

Community and Educational Initiatives Environmental education is vital, while socially and environmentally responsible behaviors are essential for a greener and sustainable future. As part of its mandate to prepare educational initiatives in order to spread environmental awareness and to develop environmental thinking at all levels of society, Bee’ah will continue to instigate and implement community events to encourage Sharjah’s residents to lead an environmental lifestyle, by practicing the 3Rs (reduce, re-use, and recycle). Bee’ah also plans to take the Bee’ah School of Environment (BSOE) to its next level of success and adopt its modules in schools across the Emirate of Sharjah.
