Local author’s newest offering details story of love amidst war By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Keeping the faith A rally held in Centerville on Sunday brought hundreds out in support of President Donald Trump, despite the fact that challenger Joe Biden had the day before secured enough electoral votes to win the Nov. 3 election. Billy Clark, right, who attended with his wife Lori, left, and their friend Carol Duvekot, said he simply wants to know that the election was carried out fairly and that potential voter fraud is thoroughly investigated. To see how candidates fared in Goochland, see page 12.
As an award-winning writer, Robin Traywick Williams knew that the story needed to be told: A dashing young military officer and his beautiful bride-to-be, their tumultuous love story and early adventures unfolding against the backdrop of the Second World War. Williams, as it happened, also knew in her heart that she should be the one to put the story down on WILLIAMS paper — after all, the young couple in question was her mother and father. Now, after years of painstaking research and multiple drafts, Williams has released, “The Last Romantic War,” a book that traces her parents’ early lives and courtship, which was shaped in no small way by

died in 2006 and confirmed that all the events detailed were exactly as he remembered them. As much as she enjoyed getting to see her father’s stories in a new context, Williams says the research she did on her mother’s life proved every bit as intriguing. A popular coed in Lynchburg, Flo Neher met her future husband on a blind date at Ft. Benning, Georgia in 1942. Clearly enamored with each other, they became unofficially engaged that night. For reasons Williams details in the book, marriage would not come until after Bo returned from the war and Flo had spent time in DC working for the war effort. Eventually, however, they would go on to celebrate over six decades together, enjoying what Williams describes as a glamorous, adventurous life (Flo Traywick, now 96, was the first woman in Virginia to run for Congress and served on the Republican National Committee for 16 years). see Williams > 3

Goochland CASA holding holiday poinsettia sale Contributed report
Also known as the Christmas Star and Christmas Flower, it is said that the Poinsettia’s association with Christmas comes from a Mexican legend. The story goes that a child, with no means for a grander gift, gathered humble weeds from the side of the road to place at the church alter on Christmas Eve. As the Christmas Eve church service
went along, the congregation witnessed a Christmas miracle: the weeds turned into brilliant red and green flowers that we know today as Poinsettias. Today, Goochland CASA continues to create miracles and hope for children out of situations that can seem so desolate. Brighten yours or someone else’s holiday season with a vibrant Poinsettia! Residents’ input will help address critical need By Roslyn Ryan Editor
We had only been dating a year or so when my future husband bought his first house. It would eventually become our house — and still is to this day — but back then it seemed like an awfully big step, and one I couldn’t fully understand.
I was living at the time in a third floor walk-up in a stately (if a little rickety) old building in the Fan District, totally content to hand off maintenance and any other issues in exchange for the monthly rent. Meanwhile, on the first night in the new house, I’m not sure he even slept. Walking from room to room, opening closets and taking in the view from the front window,

‘Magical lamp’ story offers a valuable lesson By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
You can’t make up this stuff. As children, many of us marveled to the tales of Aladdin and his magical lamp. When the lamp was rubbed, a huge genie appeared and granted the lucky owner a series of wishes, often granting them great wealth or personal happiness. It’s a magical tale that enforces the idea that one magical moment can change a person’s life: a simple stroke of good luck that produces results that provide everything a person could not attain through normal measures. I recall hearing the story as a child and somehow equating it with another story I’d heard called Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. I eventually learned that the two were both part of a collection called Arabian Nights and were a source of entertainment for children around the world. French author Antoine Galland translated the story of Aladdin in a collection called A Thousand and One Nights, but scholars have since decided the tale of Aladdin actually takes place in China, and Galland added the story to his famous Arabian Nights collection. While Disney first introduced many of us to Aladdin, Sinbad the Sailor and Ali Baba, the original manuscript contains more than 1,000 stories and mythical tales. But, Aladdin and his famous lamp is more recognizable for most of us, and the magic of the rags to riches story continues to entice readers today. For one doctor in India, the fable became too real, and, when given an opportunity to purchase the famous lamp he jumped at the chance. While caring for an elderly woman, LA Khan encountered two see Lamp > page 7

Lamp continued from >6 individuals who claimed to be her sons. They told the doctor a story of how the magical lamp had landed in their hands, and claimed they had personally experienced the power of the lamp. What about the genie? The pair wove a complicated episode of events to convince the doctor that included a mystic scene where one of them dressed like Aladdin and appeared to be clutching the ancient lamp. LA Khan agreed to buy the lamp at a price of $41,000, apparently marked down from the original $200,000 asking price. Police in Meerut, in the western Uttar Pradesh district of India, were contacted by Khan last month when he filed a complaint claiming he had been duped by the two con men. Authorities agreed and arrested the men quickly discovering the pair had run
Housing continued from >6 ers seems terribly out of reach. There are a host of reasons why many of those who dream of owning their own home are unable to make that dream a reality, and I am not going to pretend I understand the majority of those factors. But thankfully a local cadre of Goochland community leaders has been looking at just this issue for some time now — and they need your help. In 2019, then Goochland County Administrator John Budesky asked GoochlandCares to assemble a diverse team of community members who have expertise or knowledge of housing in Goochland. the same con on several other families in India. Khan told police the pair had gone to extreme measures to make the lamp and its power seem real, even “conjuring” up a genie at one point in the negotiation. Indian authorities are terming the case a prime example of if it seems to good to be true, it probably is, and they now suspect the woman who received the doctor’s care also may be involved in the scam. The victim didn’t make it clear as to what wishes he had planned to invoke when the genie appeared, but it all seems irrelevant now as he searches for his lost $40,000, and hopefully obtains a more realistic vision of the difference between fact and fiction. Besides the obvious lessons this story provides, there also are other implications that are clearly displayed in the unfortunate plight of the Indian doctor. Always get a second opinion.
nity members, HousingGVA was launched. With a grant from Virginia Housing Development Association, the committee hired housing experts and had advisors to assess the county’s housing situation. The assessment is slated for completion in Spring 2021 and will include existing data as well as responses from a community-wide survey. To take this survey, please visit http:// gvahousingneeds.questionpro. com or call Carol Dunlap at (804) 556-0400 to receive a paper copy. The survey takes just a couple of minutes and is totally anonymous, and could help the county bring those who would like to make their homes in Goochland get just a little closer to that dream. In short, it would be an awfully neighborly thing to do.

Goochland sons among Veritas seniors honored By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
RICHMOND – Goochland County residents and Veritas teammates Alden Sweeney and Kaleb Jastrzemski followed different trajectories to that special moment last Wednesday. Sweeney had started in goal for the boys soccer team the last four years. Jastrzemski returned to the team after not playing since he was a freshman. Both players were pivotal to Veritas’ successes in 2020. And both were honored alongside their teammates Jack Butler, Stephen Edds and Daniel Ludovico on Wednesday’s Senior Night, That game was not only significant in that it capped a condensed but unbeaten (7-01) 11-man 2020 campaign for Veritas – it was also important for just being able to take place along with the fall season – something that, because of the still-ongoing COVID19 pandemic, can no longer be seen as a guarantee. “It has really been a good outlet – a really positive thing. To come out and to play a game that we love, and to be with people that we love being around – and we support each other – has just been a gift in the midst of some tough times,” said Sterling Sweeney, who has coached Veritas’ girls soccer team for years and took the helm of the boys team for the first time this fall. “It’s just been a gift to me; it’s been a gift to these guys. We push each other hard, but they’re sweet with each other, though, too. They just support each other and encourage each other a lot.” Veritas ended up getting to play about half of its normal schedule, toughing out wins against teams like Benedictine

It was senior Jack Butler who, with a run towards the left corner, angled the ball across and into the right-corner netting of the goal to put his team in the lead in the second half against F.U.M.A. Coach Sweeney called Butler “one of the most dynamic players Veritas has ever had,” and praised him as an “unbelievable teammate and “unbelievable player.” In addition to emerging victorious in close matches, Veritas this season picked up dominant wins over Grace

In one of those games, Will Garrison, who is relatively new and hasn’t gotten a lot of playing time, delivered what might go down as Sweeney’s favorite moment of the season when he scored a goal, and his team, Sweeney recalled, “just went bananas.” “It was just this really cool team moment,” Sweeney said. In their only non-win of the season, the Lions finished their game against the North Cross School – which has won three state championships in the last nine years – in a 0-0 draw. Collegiate girls tennis delivers unbeaten 2020 season By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
When the COVID-19 pandemic first gripped the nation, it threw everything into flux, shutting down functions across the globe – including high school sports in Virginia this past spring – and making people question if some kind of normalcy – and how much of it – would return this summer and fall. It did to a degree for Collegiate’s girls tennis program. No, the team didn’t play anyone outside of its League of Independent Schools conference. No, the team couldn’t play doubles – seven singles matches became the new format – and no, visitors weren’t allowed at the matches. But with LIS bringing back tennis, cross country, field hockey and volleyball this fall, the Cougars embraced the opportunity to return to the court. And they dominated it. Collegiate rolled out a perfect final week to go unbeaten at 10-0 in team play and 66-4 in individual matches. The Cougars won 7-0 against both

Lauren Greis on Tuesday and Sophie Aprahamian on Friday. St. Gertrude’s Mary Jane Erskin retired against Willett with a score of 8-3, and Willett went on to dominate her Friday match, 10-1, over Trinity’s Lucy Rowe.
the team’s most improved player. Sweeney called him “an unbelievable addition to this team in every way imaginable.” He scored a key goal in the season opener versus Benedictine. And for Alden Sweeney, his coach and players affectionately held their hands together in the form of a zero, honoring the four-year senior goalie who never got scored on this year in 11-man play. The team’s Most Valuable Player made 49 saves in eight matches. “He is just a big difference-maker for us,” Sweeney said of his son Alden, who is looking to play college soccer. “We can just count on him back there and then we can focus on trying to score, because we feel pretty good that he’s going to keep it out.”
Shenk won both of her matches 10-1, routing AnneStewart Hatfield on Tuesday and Lucy Crichton on Friday. Shenk earned three bagel sets of 10-0 in her 10-0 season and went 100-14 in her overall singles games played.
Willett never lost more than three games in any given match this year and went 98-8 with five bagel sets. And Huff, the 2019 AllMetro Girls Tennis Player of the Year who recently committed to the College of
Charleston, won eight bagel sets and went 100-5 overall. Collegiate’s sweep against St. Gertrude’s last Tuesday was completed by Claiborne Dillard routing Abby Gray 10-2, McKenna Boardman blanking Charlotte Ann Booker 10-0, Ann Carter Arendale defeating Alex Blaylock 10-3 and Reynolds Hester beating Neisha Shick 10-3. In exhibition play, Malone Morchower and Kylee Sanderson won 8-0 against Meredith Whitmer and Izzi Friend, respectively, and Sarina DePalma routed Paige Simon 8-1. In addition to the three seniors winning their matches on Friday against Trinity, Morchower defeated Emelia Woolman 10-3, Sanderson beat Emma Smith 10-3, Lucy Barnes routed Clare Murphy 10-2 and Arendale trounced Kate Hurlbert 10-2. Collegiate also won three of its four exhibition matches versus the Titans. Lucy Ottley routed Gabby Strickler 8-1, Dillard dominated against Perrin Gilman 8-1 and DePalma won a tight battle over Brynn Guerette, 8-6.

In Goochland, voter turnout hit near record By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The run-up to an election brings challenges in even the best of times, but this year’s amended absentee voting rules and surge in requests for mail-in ballots ensured that Mulligan and his team would be stretched nearly to the limit.
Fortunately, Mulligan said Monday, there were no major issues reported at any of the polling stations and any problems that did arise were quickly handled. As he prepared to deliver the county’s final results to the Clerk of the Court, Mulligan admitted he was looking forward to being able to take a breath and put some of the stress of the last few months behind him. Mulligan said that the biggest challenge poll workers faced this year came when those who had requested a

mail-in ballot decided to vote in person instead. Since they had already been issued an official ballot, that meant they either needed to turn that ballot over to be cancelled (if they had it with them) or use a provisional ballot. This year’s voter turnout came in at 86.3 percent, Mulligan said, just shy of the county’s all-time record of 87.5. Of the 16, 950 votes cast in Goochland on Nov. 3, 9,966 votes (58.80 %) went to Republican Donald Trump,
