Residents of Goochland’s District 3 have a new voice on the county school board. On Tuesday, May 30, during a special meeting of the Goochland County School Board, Vernon Fleming was appointed interim representative for District 3. Fleming replaces John L. Lumpkins Jr., who began his interim term on the Goochland Board of Supervisors on May 1. Lumpkins is currently filling the position left vacant by the death of Ned Creasey last March. Fleming, a native of Louisa County, currently serves in a leadership role at Performance Food Group, the latest position in a career spent in large corpora-

Obituaries NANCY J. AMOS Nancy Jean Hensley Amos, 89, died peacefully May 22, 2018. Nancy was born to Zula Harmon Hensley and James Walter Hensley in Danville, Kentucky, on August 27, 1928. She was an only child for 15 years until her beloved brother, Thomas was born, giving her great joy throughout her life. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

This time at least, Barr was simply too low By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As of the day this newspaper went to press, the Roseanne sitcom reboot is no more. If that comes as unwelcome news to you, I’m sincerely sorry. The truth is, I must admit I wasn’t sure how to feel when I found out they were bringing back the show. But while I didn’t make time to watch it, plenty of others did, and it didn’t take long for media outlets of all stripes to begin ruminating on the various facets of the show and painting a picture of a somewhat different sitcom than the one I recalled from the late

1980s. It was clear from the start what the intent was: Show America that those who identify as conservatives are not purely one thing or another, not racist, not homophobic, not hostile toward people who don’t act, or talk, or think just like them. As the sitcom’s showrunner said in an interview earlier this year, the hope was that the show would help “heal things,” particularly for those on the left. In all honesty, I wanted to intensely dislike this idea. Are there really that many of us, I wondered, who need to be told that people are people and most of us are far more alike than we are different? Was it really going to beget

a Nielsen-ratings bonanza to tap into the (hopefully small) segment of the population that needs a sitcom to tell them that most people don’t fit neatly into red or blue boxes? Even so, as the weeks wore on, my personal stance began to soften. Even if the premise seemed a bit silly, it was just a television show. And, also, it seemed to be a sort of bizarre yet well-intentioned olive branch from one side of the political divide to the other — never something to be taken for granted. Of course, as we all now know, real life intervened in the form of the show’s star and namesake, Roseanne Barr, bulldozing any

conciliatory overtures the show may have aspired to with a handful of tweets, the content of which was as mystifying as it was nasty and unnecessary. The show was immediately axed, dashing any hopes that liberals and conservatives the world over might spontaneously begin hosting weekly watch parties during which they’d hold hands and drift toward the middle. In the end, despite the show’s cancellation, perhaps Barr inadvertently accomplished the project’s overarching goal: for one brief, shining moment, just about all of us did come together as one. Unfortunately, it was to tell her to please go away.

For doting dad, a double dose of goose bumps By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

It’s an exciting time of year as parents prepare for a milestone in their children’s lives that transforms them into young adults and begins a new cycle of young adultism. Yes, I’m talking graduation and the change it represents for children who once seemed like helpless babies unable to care for themselves and now appear on the verge of adulthood.

It’s always a special day when a parent can enjoy that pride and accomplishment that can only happen when your child’s name is called, and someone you’ve loved since their first breath walks across the stage and accepts their first real symbol of things accomplished, a diploma. We’re not quite there at my house, but, when Jack and Emma graduate later this month, it’s a sure sign that my kids are growing up. It’s also an opportune time to take

stock of the past years, and to sit back and sigh a brief hint of relief at their successes. Ever since they were born, I’ve marveled at the mystique that is only evident in the relationship between twins. They search for each other in a crowd, and it’s the first face they seek when entering a room, a sort of telepathic connection that defies explanation. My mother would say they are like two peas in a pod, but their

common tendencies don’t outweigh their differences, and each has a unique and distinct personality. But, that twin attachment is always there, even with the unique personalities. When Jack began his journey at Tuckahoe Middle School three years ago, no one could predict what lay ahead. He began his middle school see Goose bumps > 16

My Advice to You This week, the Gazette continues our series in which we ask county residents to share the best piece of advice they have ever been given.

Buddy Bishop Advice. There seems to be a surplus of it out there. If I’m a worthy example, there also is a corresponding deficit of adopting it. As I think it over, I haven’t typically received much direct advice. I am of course not including command form advice from my dear wife regarding driving or what I’m wearing or planningg to wear. R Really, useful advice has c come to me i the form in o of statem ments rather th than counsel. I rrecall hearing things like “You shouldn’t feel that way,” “Watch what a man does, not just what he says,” “Don’t talk with your mouth full,” “Some people are so smart, they’re stupid,” “The right thing is rarely the popular thing.” I don’t always get these right in practice, but I do usually remember them. I find useful advice has also come to me by way of example. Fortunately, some examples of what I was exposed to were ones of character like kindness, generosity, respect, appreciation for the Bible, paying attention to kids and older folks, doing what you can to put others at ease. Honestly, I didn’t try to work on these, they just kind of snuck in and stuck with me a little bit over time. The direct advice I did receive, worked best if there was an answer to the question of Why? Why should I do that? I was advised to study hard and get good grades; stay in school. I’d ask why? The response was essentially that I had an attitude problem. No, I had a question — and no one answered it back then. All they had to say was see Advice > page 7

Blacksmith Shop event to feature area artists Ford’s evocative paintings on display for first time Saturday Contributed report

Betty Ford will turn 90 next month, and though she has been painting for the majority of those years and has a respectable portfolio under her belt, little of her amazing work has been exposed to the public. That will change Saturday when her work goes on display at the Jackson Blacksmith Shop’s Exhibition Building. The art exhibit — part of the Blacksmith Shop’s Annual Event — will feature the work of Ford and other area artists. Though she does not call herself an artist, the retired third grade teacher has been painting scenes around her home on Dogtown Road for years. When asked about a painting she did of her uncle’s store, Ford pointed to the painting and smiled. “That brings back so many

Advice continued from >6 “to make sure you get a good paycheck later, so that you can make your own decisions and not have to always live by the deciding of others. OK, I can do that (now). I was advised to eat breakfast and get plenty of rest. I wasn’t hungry in the morning and I’d rather stay up, so I’d ask “Why? The response was “’Cause your supposed to! They should have said “you’ll have headaches and anxiety and your body won’t work right over the years and the habit will be hard to set once you’re older.. OK, got it (now). My mom did have one bit of advice that came with an answer:

memories of the good times we had at that store, she said. Her uncle, Robert Mealy, Sr., ran a country store on Dogtown Road where folks often socialized and enjoyed watching and playing baseball nearby. Though the store was taken down several decades ago, it and other places and people live on in the paintings of Ford, who will be on hand Saturday when the exhibit opens at noon. In addition to the art exhibit, a permanent historic photograph exhibit as well as the Jackson Family Descendency Chart will be on display. In addition to visual art, several performing artists in the area will be showcased at the event. There will be performances throughout the day by area vocalists and musicians, as well as a mime performance. The event also will include tours of the historic Jackson Blacksmith Shop, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Central Virginia Blacksmith’s Guild will demonstrate the art of blacksmithing. Various vendors and craft“Don’t wear socks to bed, your feet will rot! Of course, that’s more of the opinion category type of advice. Someone once advised me with the opinion “A man’s a fool to move north. The why wasn’t simply stated but there were tons of anecdotes of how friendliness dropped in step with the with thermometer. I can’t claim to follow or agree with these, but I have always remembered them for some reason. Maybe it was because of the earnest and colorful way the advice was relayed. Before I get to the pithy conclusion part, I have to ask, why does some advice — “Don’t eat wild mushrooms!— seem to be followed and repeated without question?

Goochland’s baseball team stands with the Region 2A East trophy at Goochland High School on Friday, June 1, after defeating Maggie Walker Governor’s School 10-7 in the region final. The Bulldogs rode the wave of a seven-run fourth inning to the win.

Bulldogs power past Dragons for region crown By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

It was the first game in a week that rain hadn’t tampered with the play on the field for the Goochland Bulldogs baseball team. The dry and warm conditions were a welcome change for the as they engaged in a back-and-forth battle with a familiar foe in Maggie Walker. “It was so nice to play on a dry day,” Goochland’s Walker

Murray said. “It was hot, but it was dry so it was great.” Thanks to a seven-run fourth inning, the Bulldogs defeated the Green Dragons to take home the Region 2A East crown. Goochland jumped out front in the bottom of the first inning. Walker Murray led the inning off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Wyatt Murray. That made the score 1-0 Bulldogs.

Goochland scored another run in the bottom of the second. Austin Rose reached with a one-out walk and Kindrick Braxton took his place as a courtesy runner. Cole Nuckols was next to the plate and ripped a double into the outfield, scoring Rose to make it 2-0. The Bulldogs eventually loaded the bases with two outs in that inning, but a fly ball to left field off Wyatt Murray’s bat

ended that opportunity. Maggie Walker responded with some runs of its own in the top of the third. Goochland resident Cole Ragone hit a solo home run to make it 2-1 Bulldogs. Two batters later, Jackson Downs reached on a fielder’s choice. He would advance to second on a stolen base and to third on an error by Rose. Matthew Haines knocked Downs in to tie the game with

a single. Then, Zach Adee scored Haines to give the Green Dragons their first lead of the game at 3-2. Jordan Hayes brought Adee around to score with a double to make it 4-2 Maggie Walker. The Bulldogs got one back in the bottom of the frame when Tyler Ott reached on a walk and made it to third after Maggie Walker’s pitcher was not on the same page as the first baseman and attempted a

pick off with no one home. Tyler Gentry brought Ott home with a single to make it 4-3 Maggie Walker. The Green Dragons added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ragone reached on a fielder’s choice and Hunter Taylor reached on a walk. Both advanced a base after a balk was called, with Ragone scoring on a wild pitch to make see Bulldogs>8

Roundup: Bernstine wins in region singles, doubles By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The Region 2A singles tennis trophy won’t have to travel far to find its new home. Goochland’s Ryan Bernstine won the region singles championship on May 29 over William Hobbs of Maggie Walker in a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Bernstine was the No. 1 seed entering the tournament and rolled his way through to the final. He won his first match 6-0, 6-0, followed by taking down Nathan Taminger of Maggie Walker 6-1, 6-0 and then Hobbs in the final. Ryan kept the region title in the family as his brother, Chase, won the previous three region singles titles. Bernstine and Max Pressley were the No. 2 seed in the doubles tournament and were able to make their way to the final and bring home that hardware as well. The duo opened with a match against Taminger and William Larson of Maggie

Bulldogs continued from >8 it 5-3. Taylor scored on a single by Downs to up the score to 6-3. But, then Goochland’s bats roared to life. Joey Ramsbottom opened the inning with a walk, followed by John King reaching with a single. Wyatt Murray brought them both home with a double to cut the Maggie Walker lead to one run. Then, Ott tied the game with an RBI single. Zac Harlow and Gentry

TRACK

Goochland’s track team had strong showings across the board at the Class 1 and 2 state track meet at East Rockingham High School on June 1-2. Dorothy Clore led the way for the Bulldogs, finishing third in the 100 meters with a time of 12.73. The girls 4x100 relay team was also third in the state with a time of 52.37. Clore was also sixth in the 200 meters after a mark of 27.14. Victoria Spooner finished sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:31.51. The girls 4x800 relay team was sixth in the state with a time of 10:36.48. Sierra McLean was ninth in the 400 meters with a 1:04.10. Grace Juran was ninth in the 1600 with a 5:45.83. Aishlin Hyman was 10th in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 6 inches. The 4x400 meter relay team was 10th in the state with a 4:33.50. Kennedy Carter was 12th in the 300 hurdles with a 52.93.

each reached with singles before Rose hit a groundball to shortstop. The flip from the Green Dragons shortstop to second base was offline and the ball went into the outfield, which allowed two runs to score for the Bulldogs. Ramsbottom and King each would knock in runs to make it 10-6. Walker Murray then got into a groove on the mound and shut down the Green Dragons in the fifth and sixth. Maggie Walker scored a run in the top of the seventh on a wild throw on a stolen base

attempt. However, Goochland pitcher Jackson Raines stemmed the tide from there and sealed the win for Goochland. In the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, Maggie Walker only had three runners reach base. In that same timespan, Walker Murray struck out three batters and Raines struck out two Green Dragons hitters. The 10 runs Goochland scored was the highest of the entire playoff run thus far. The win excised some ghosts from Maggie Walker’s win over Goochland in the

Walker and won 6-3, 6-2. Then, the pair played against Viet Nguyen and Nate Doggett and won that match 6-1, 6-0. In the finals, Bernstine and Pressley took down Hobbs and Nathan Lord of Maggie Walker by scores of 6-1, 6-3 to win the region title. It is Ryan’s third consecutive region doubles title and the first with Pressley as his partner. Chase was his partner for the previous two titles. Bernstine and Pressley will compete in the state singles and doubles tournament. The Class 2 singles semifinals will be held on June 7 at 9 a.m. at Virginia Tech. Bernstine will face Noah Surrette of George Mason. Should Bernstine advance to the final, he would play at noon on June 7. Bernstine and Pressley will face Ryan Aud and Ben Knick of Wilson Memorial on June 8 in the Class 2 doubles semifinal.
