KING

econd Union Baptist Church’s Tayveon Daniels recently showed off the crown he earned on June 9, when he was named the 2017 NAACP King at the Goochland Branch NAACP’s annual Freedom Fund Banquet. Tayveon earned the title by helping to raise the most money for the fund, becoming the first ever king (past winners have all been female). Winning is nothing new for Daniels: A talented young basketball player, he scored the most points of any player on his team this year and hopes to make the sport his career someday. Daniels, whose favorite subject in school is math, also participates in youth choir, Sons of the King Mime Ministry, and the Boys to Men Positive Youth Ministry.

Goochland CASA holding volunteer training Contributed report

Goochland CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is once again conducting a training program for new advocates. Through training community volunteers, the program harvests the power of many to serve

children involved in the courts due to abuse and neglect. Advocates investigate the child’s situation and represent their best interest through the life of the case, ensuring it is brought to a swift and appropriate conclusion. As the organization celebrates its 12th year of

nonprofit service, Goochland CASA stands by the belief that all children have the fundamental right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to grow up in the embrace of a lovsee CASA > 2

Thanks to a new law that went into effect last week, Virginia residents facing fines and court costs must be offered a reasonable payment plan. The measure, sponsored by Del. Manoli Loupassi (R-68th), seeks to remedy a problem that has gained national attention is recent years, specifically the difficulty many low-income drivers face when attempting to regain drivers licenses lost due to failure to pay fines. As Goochland Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Caudill explained it during a recent community forum on law enforcement hosted by the Goochland NAACP, it is a situation he has seen again and again. First, a person has his or her license suspended after failing to pay fines and other related costs from a minor traffic offense. Still needing to get to work, the person makes the decision to drive without a license. They are stopped again, and now find themselves charged with driving with a suspended license. More court costs follow, the driver sinks deeper into debt, and the hope of ever getting their drivers license back dwindles even further. Caudill noted during the forum that his office had made it a priority to work with see Law > 7

Goochland County schools end year with commitment to instructional innovation We take chances,” said John Hendron, Goochland’s Director of Innovation and Strategy. The culminating event was a twoday symposium that also included teachers who wanted to participate at the end of the year. County leaders, including Susan Lascolette (District 1) Manuel Alvarez, Jr. (District 2), and county administrator, John Budesky, attended the event. June 6, 2017, the first day of the symposium, included a screening of the movie Design Disruptors, exploring careers involving design thinking. The film exposed educators to the role design has in the modern economy as a disruptive force. A panel discussed the film and its connection to education, which included Mr. Kevin Hazzard, a member of the Goochland school board. Dr. Scott Bray from the University of Richmond was the mod-

erator of the panel. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. William Rankin, an internationally-recognized education consultant, who formerly has held positions as an English professor and as director of learning for Apple. Rankin delivered an entertaining address about learning and how technology should be used “appropriately” in the classroom to engage learners. His ideas resonated with over fifty Goochland educators present at the event. A design roundtable finished the first day, designed to help teachers synthesize a number of diverse ideas shared throughout the day. “Teachers could have spent their last day of school closing out the year, but these folks chose to make a difference and participate in a unique professional development event. The energy and enthusiasm around the ideas of inno-

vation were impressive outcomes of this event,” said superintendent, Dr. Jeremy Raley. The second day was more creative and fun. Teachers participated in two activities in downtown Richmond. One was a historical Segway tour in which one of the groups received an impromptu photo-op with Governor Terry McAuliffe outside the Virginia Governor’s Mansion. The second team-building activity was a photowalk, where teachers were challenged with using the camera creatively to encourage an inquiry mindset. Also enthusiastic about the symposium was Stephen Geyer, Goochland’s assistant superintendent of instruction. “At the end of this year, it was clear that every grant project had strong merits for Goochland students,” Geyer said. “We can’t wait to see what our teachers dream up in the school year to come!”

Contributed report

Soon after arriving in Goochland in July 2016, Dr. Jeremy Raley, Goochland’s new superintendent, floated the idea of offering grant opportunities to teachers to “see what was possible” in the area of instructional innovation. The leadership team focused the idea around opportunities for deeper learning, and a committee led by Chuck English of the Science Museum of Virginia evaluated teacher-created applications for innovative projects. Thanks to the Goochland Education Foundation, roughly $10,000 was awarded to groups of teachers to implement their project ideas. “This was a great example of us trying to tell teachers to ‘take chances’ and see what might happen. There was no guarantee every project would work out, but that’s how you innovate.

Embracing birthdays and being ‘uncool’ By Roslyn Ryan Editor

I

had a birthday the other day. No, I am not inclined to mention which one it was — and etiquette, I believe, still maintains that you are not allowed to ask — but, suffice it to say, that I am now exactly one year older than I was last year at this time and one more standard deviation away from having any clue whatsoever what is going on with people still classified by Those in Charge of Classifying Such Things as “young.” Truth be told, I’m not sure that I was ever truly youthful in the energetic carefree way that one is supposed to be, the way that time of life is portrayed in poetry and song. I was the sort of child who took it upon herself to watch for hurricanes (even when none were forecast) while the rest of the family frolicked at the shore. While other children played soccer, I learned

to crotchet. And when my sister turned a refrigerator box into a make-believe house, I insisted that it be located in a nice town with good schools and low taxes. You get the idea. The point is, I have always never felt young. But lately, particularly as I leave my childhood farther and farther (and farther) behind, I’m noticing more often the signs that I’m really not. Case in point: The other day, while out running errands, I decided to treat myself to dinner at a trendy new spot downtown. Other than the black and white movie playing silently above the bar, I guessed I was the oldest thing in there by a decade or more. I also was the only one without visible tattoos, or piercings, or that kind of hairstyle that sort of looks like a throwback to the 1950s but in a coolly ironic way that must require several YouTube tutorials to master. (A quick note: I was, like most of the servers, wearing mostly black, but that is largely because I have a terrible habit of spilling things on myself and it’s less noticeable when you’re vêtu de noir.) For the record, I went to VCU and studied art for a time — a guy

with a neck tattoo and metal rod through his nose is not the least bit unsettling to me. But what was just a bit jarring, perhaps for the first time, was the very obvious difference between “me” and “them,” that very real feeling that I have now crossed over into a vast new world where the truly young and hip don’t hang out. If my cool factor had always hovered near the low end of the scale, I was now suddenly won-

dering if it had plunged to a level undetectable to other humans. I had begun to feel just a bit beside myself when, quite out of the blue, a notion hit me with the force of an antique ceiling tile falling on my head. Suddenly, I noticed that all around me were nods to the past,

Day on the river offers a new view By Laura McFarland Contributing Columnist

The song developed in much the same way the day did – with silliness and teamwork. “Poling, poling, poling, Keep that batteau rolling, The James it is a flowin’, Sweep wide.” In case you didn’t catch the cadence, sing it again to the tune of “Rawhide.” The song was started by Gail Timberlake, crew member of the Lady’s Slipper batteau and the one who invited me to join the crew for the seventh day of the 32nd annual James River Batteau Festival. My contribution to the song was the one where the James River is mentioned. This news editor already wrote a good deal about how the experience of participating in the festival unfolded in a feature story on the front page, but some things that made the day much more special just didn’t seem to belong in that story. Maybe it’s me. I am so used to working to keep my thoughts and opinions out of my stories that it was a struggle to write one where they were supposed to shine through. Still, I held a little back. Like Gail’s masterpiece of a song. Or the joy of watching her and another Powhatan resident, David Samuel, doing an impromptu poling race while running down the lengths of the two sides of the boat to make it go faster. They were egged on by crew members from another batteau, and maybe it was this

In the days following my day on the river, it is funny how little details from the day kept coming to mind. In a day filled with bugs, I saw one that truly stood out in appearance.

When I showed the picture to someone later, she identified it as an assassin bug. I thought the name was fitting because, at the time, all I could think was that if Hollywood modeled one of the gigantic space alien bugs in science fiction movies after this guy, I would be extremely disturbed and probably couldn’t sit through it. The other bugs that stood out were the dragonflies, who, for some reason, loved resting on the front sweep of the batteau, even as it repeatedly lifted and slapped down in the water. It may sound strange, but one of the things that fascinated me throughout the day was looking at the roots of the trees alongside the banks of the river. Sometimes they were just a tangled mess. But, other times, something about the pattern and shape of the roots was almost sculptural. When combined with the trunks of the trees, which might bend

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County in seemingly unnatural ways yet still be standing, they were captivating in a way my camera lens didn’t do justice. When I covered the batteau festival in the past, I sat up on an old railroad bridge at Cartersville Landing, enjoying the peace of the James River, watching the boats come into shore, and wondering what it was like to actually be out there. On Friday, June 23, I finally found out. At the end of a long, tiring day, as I climbed across the other batteau to reach dry land, I couldn’t help but turn back and take another look at the beautiful Lady’s Slipper, which I had watched come into shore for the past three years in almost the same exact spot. It was like looking at both it and the James River anew, because now I knew them in a way I never had before. Laura McFarland is the editor of Powhatan Today newspaper.

VSBA highlights successful local school programs

Alternate Route to Licensure in Goochland Schools The path to full licensure for provisionally licensed teachers can be long, time-intensive, and expensive. Goochland County Public Schools created a seminar experience for four CTE teachers and submitted a proposal to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to create an alternative path to licensure. Once the plan was approved, part one of the plan was implemented in April, and the four teachers met with the instructional team to begin the field practica, professional reading, direct instruction, and collaborative work sessions. Part two of the program was conducted for five days in

Curriculum and Innovation Teacher Program GCPS offered four teachers extended contracts to help develop high-quality, project-based learning experiences for students in grades 3-8 so that their peer teachers could better benefit from having first-class exemplars of PBL that focused on deeper learning. Deeper learning has been the focus behind the internationally-recognized 1:1 implementation with iPads in grades 3-8. By providing teachers a variety of PBL experiences aligned to the Virginia SOL and the eight standards for high quality project-based learning by the Buck Institute, in combination with professional development and coaching, the work undertaken first in the summer with these teachers is now bringing deeper learning experiences to our students in the

elementary and middle-school grades.

Performance Assessment Partnership Goochland County Public Schools’ Balanced Assessment Project is built on an equilibrium among both assessment purpose (achievement versus growth) and assessment type (traditional versus nontraditional). Entering the fourth year of our assessment work, we are seeing strong outcomes for students along with positive impacts to day-to-day classroom instruction. As part of the next evolution of this work, we have established a strong partnership with Chesterfield County Public Schools and Dr. Chris Gareis from William & Mary University in the development of nineteen signature performance assessments that will used K-12 and evaluated cross-divisionally during the 2017-18 school year. These performance assessments are being developed by teachers and are aimed and measuring “the five Cs” along with content knowledge. This work represents best practice in terms of the Virginia’s local alternative assessment framework; moreover, it demonstrates one promising approach to providing students,

teachers, and parents with a more complete picture of student learning. The full VSBA directory is available at www.vsba.org/ showcases. It includes divisionwide programs, and those at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Good Grilling Feeling the burn? Avoiding these eight mistakes will help make the most of your meat

ooking food over an open fire imparts all sorts of flavor. Grilling tends to be quicker, less messy and more convenient than cooking in the kitchen Ñ particularly during the dog days of summer. Outdoor grills are everywhere, including nearly every backyard across the country. The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association says $1.47 billion in grill sales were made in 2016. That grills are so commonplace doesnÕt mean that everyone

grilling is employing the right techniques. Becoming the ultimate grillmaster involves understanding the subtleties of grilling and avoiding common mistakes so food can look and taste that much better.

1

Not prepping the food: The French culinary term for preparing to cook is “mise en place.” This is especially important when grilling, as cooks must deal with faster cooking times than they would otherwise encounter when cooking meals in the stove.

6

Playing with food: Grilling does not require much intervention. Repeatedly flipping and squeezing meat and poultry can cause flavorful juices to leak out. Then youÕre left with dried-out food. Resist any urges to prod and poke food. And minimize how many times you lift the grill cover to take a peek, as that can cause temperatures to fluctuate. Use a thermometer to determine when food is done. And donÕt forget that meat will still cook a bit after itÕs taken off the grill.

7

Improper seasoning: Basting food with sugarladen sauces and marinades too early can cause flare-ups and burning. Quick rubs can help lock in flavor, and then reserve the sauce for the last few minutes of grilling, says cookbook author Dave Martin.

8

Digging in too soon: Give meats a chance to rest for between five and 10 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute through the food. This improves flavor and tenderness. —Metro Creative

American Legion Post 201’s John Reynolds got his team off to a good start with a 2 RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to give Post 201 a one-run lead at the time on June 27 at Powhatan High School. Reynolds also scored a run in the five-run first inning.

Post 175’s seven-run inning downs Post 201 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

It was the hot start that Powhatan Post 201 was looking for against Mechanicsville Post 175 on June 27 at Powhatan High School. But, it wasn’t the strong finish that Post 201 had hoped

for. Led by a grand slam off Post 175’s Trey Karnes’ bat in the top of the seventh inning, Post 175 scored nine unanswered runs, including seven in the seventh inning, in a 12-8 win over Post 201 at Powhatan High School. “That’s a really good base-

ball program right there,” Post 201 coach Eric Mead said of Post 175. “I’m really proud of my guys. We battled back several times. We talked today about momentum and it’s not what you do at the beginning, but what you do at the end. I’m really pleased with how we played today.”

Post 175 got on the scoreboard in the first inning after Dalton Davis reached on an error and was brought by Canon Lambert’s RBI single to make it a 1-0 game. Powhatan responded in the bottom of the first as Jacob Talley and Cale Agee each reached base off pitcher

Landon Smith. John Reynolds knocked in two runs on a double to make it a quick 2-1 game. Reynolds would score on a wild pitch as would Wayne Butler in the inning with Justin Bales being knocked in by Austin Nicholas to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 lead for

201. Then, Post 175 just started to chip away at the Post 201 lead. Karnes reached on a single in the top of the second inning and scored when Nicholas walked Jonathan Spaulding see Legion> 12

Rogerson breaks another GRAL record in win By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland’s Andrea Rogerson is becoming quite adept at breaking Greater Richmond Aquatic League records thus far this season. The Goochland swimmer broke another record, this one in the 25 meter backstroke in the Manta Rays’ 760-704 win over Antioch on June 29. “This was a really tough meet for us,” coach Helen Brown wrote in an email. “We were down swimmers due to vacation and illness. The swimmers who attended got the job done.” Rogerson’s time was 19.62 in the 25 back, which shattered the old record of 20.12. It is the third GRAL record she has broken this season. Rogerson also won the 50 free with a time of 37.18, the 25 free with a time of 16.69 and was on the mixed eight-and-under 100 free relay time with a time of 1:26.47. “Andrea has one thing that makes her unique,” swim coach Helen Brown wrote in an email. “Many swimmers think they are swimming fast, but actually are only pushing enough to win their race and, while they have a good swim, it may not be a personal best. Andrea has learned to pace her-

Legion continued from >11 with the bases loaded to make it 5-2. The next run wouldn’t come until the top of the sixth for either team, when Karnes again reached on a single and scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 5-3. Powhatan had some chances, most notably in the bottom of the third inning with the bases loaded, but couldn’t push across any more insurance runs against the Post 175 pitchers.

self. Every time she races, her time is either a personal best or close to a personal best. I think this is because in practice when the coaches send the swimmers off on a race-pace sprint, she goes race speed. She’s very coachable. Having talent gets you noticed, being coachable makes you a champion.”” Anastasija Babic was a quad winner for Goochland, winning the 50 free, the 25 back, the 25 breast and was on the same relay team as Rogerson. Nora DeShazo also was a quad winner for the Manta Rays, taking home wins in the 50 breast, the 50 butterfly, the 50 free and was a member of the winning mixed 11-to-12 200 free relay team. Joseph Hardman was another quad winner as he won the 100 free, the 50 fly, the 50 free and was a winner with DeShazo on the 200 free relay team. Ryan Johnson also grabbed four wins for Goochland against Antioch. Johnson won the 50 free the 25 back, the 25 fly and was on the winning mixed eight-and-under 100 free relay team. Abby Pillion won the 50 back, the 100 breast, the 50 fly and was on the mixed 13-to-14 200 free relay team which won in 2:11.81. Anneliese and Annika Rogerson

joined sister Andrea with quad wins on the night as well. Anneliese won the 50 back, the 50 fly, the 50 free and was on the 200 mixed free relay team win. Meanwhile, Annika won the 50 back, the 50 breast, the 50 fly and swam anchor on the mixed nine-to10 200 free relay team. “Andrea and all the Rogerson girls have benefited from very motivated parents,” Brown wrote. “They saw talent in their girls and have continuously sought out programs to improve their swimming. In addition, the girls practice outside of the team practice time.” David Tremain added to the quad winners for Goochland after his wins in the 100 free, the 50 back, the 50 butterfly and the mixed 15-to-18 200 free relay team. Jessica and Mia Valdez each were quad winners as well. Jessica won the 100 free, the 50 back, the 50 free and was on the mixed 13-to-14 200 free relay team. Mia, on the other hand, won the 50 back, the 50 fly, the 50 free and was a member of the mixed nine-to-10 200 free relay. Emmi Evans, Luca Gardner and Payton Harrigal were tri-winners for Goochland. Barton Bowen, Caleb Barton,

Hunter Montgomery relieved Nicholas on the mound to begin the seventh and that’s when 175 pounced. Three out of the first four batters for Post 175 worked walks to load the bases with one out. Karnes stepped to the plate and put an offering from Montgomery over the left-centerfield wall to plate four runs for Post 175. Bryan Diehr, Brian Rollison and Noah Smith would reach base and score after Karnes’ grand slam to complete the seven-run inning before Powhatan was able to stop the bleed-

ing. Post 201 mounted a late charge of their own in the bottom of the eighth inning, when they started touching up relief pitcher Antonion Balducci. Montgomery had a one-out single, which was followed by Butler doubling. Two batters later, Ross Lewis singled in Montgomery to make it 10-6. An RBI single by Cale Agee and two walks in a row with the bases loaded scored a total of four runs for Post 201 to bring them within one run. “We’ve gotten hits, but we’ve strug-

Davis brought him home with an RBI triple and would score on a wild pitch to make it the final of 12-9. Powhatan got one runner on the bottom of the ninth, but another comeback wasn’t in the cards.

Post 201 got rest after five games over the span of six days, which Mead said was needed on several levels. “We need the break,” he said. “Everyone’s tired. Arms are tired, legs are tired. It’ll give us a chance to get our pitching arms back up. Welcome to American Legion, we’re pitching kids who haven’t pitched since they were 12-years-old just because we have so many games, you have to do it.” Post 201 was scheduled to play against Post 284B on July 1 at 7 p.m. That game occurred past deadline for this edition.
