For Cadets, the end of the road

Vendors still recovering after strong gusts destroyed tents, damaged merchandise By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Goochland Farmers Market Manager Lisa Dearden remembers noticing the dark clouds rolling in on the afternoon of June 7, as she and the other vendors gathered at the corner of Route 522 and Fairground Roads for the weekly Goochland Fairground Farmers Market. Despite the ominous skies, Dearden said, she thought the storm might skirt them. Sadly, she was wrong. Just a few moments later, seemingly out of

As the tents came to rest in mangled heaps over 100 feet away, their owners tried frantically to save whatever they could. “It all happened so quickly,” said Crystal Neilson-Hall, coowner of the Freckled Farm Soap Company and a regular presence at the weekly market. Neilson-Hall said she was holding onto the leg of her tent, when the wind lifted it — and the 80 pound weights holding it — off the ground. “I initially held onto the leg of the tent because I thought I could keep it from blowing away, but it pulled me along,” she said. “When I realized that I wasn’t going to be able to stop it I let go, but it had already pulled me a hundred feet.” By the time she looked back, the wind had flipped her tables and destroyed over sixty bars of soap and other products she

had for sale. Then, as quickly as the storm came in, it was gone. To Dearden and many others, there was little to do but stand and stare at the wreckage. “We were all just like deer in headlights,” said Dearden. “We just stood there like, ‘What just happened?’” Fortunately, a friend of hers was nearby and was able to help transport the now worthless tents to the dump. Dearden and the other vendors on site pitched in to help one another and salvage what they could. “Between the tent, broken display items, ruined soap and packaging we lost about $600,” Neilson-Hall said, but added that the outpouring of support from the community has been wonderful. The unfortunate incident came on the heels of some good news for the market: last month, Dearden received word that her non-profit organization, RVAgriculture, Inc., would be receiving grant funds to help those receiving food assistance get more for their money. Now, those who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be able to double the dollars they spend on fruits and vegetables at the market. For example, someone who spends $20 will be given a voucher for that amount to spend on additional produce. The program is a winwin for everyone, Dearden said, because it allows those who rely on food assistance to purchase more fruits and vegetables and also puts the money back into the hands of local farmers. The Goochland Fairground Farmers Market is open from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesdays from May through October. For more information, visit www.rvagriculture.

A perfect record: GHS student finishes up with zero absences For Anthonys, having perfect attendance is a family tradition By Roslyn Ryan Editor

For the last 13 years, whenever they arrived at school, Juan Anthony Jr.’s classmates could count on one thing for certain: he was going to be there. While some students accrued an occasional absence for a stomach bug, or a family trip, or any of a hundred other reasons, Anthony continued to come to school day after day, month after month, year after year. It wasn’t always easy. There

were several times he trudged in despite feeling under the weather, making sure to stay for at least two classes so that that he would not be marked absent. The closest he ever came to missing a day, he said, came after he suffered a football-related knee injury that left him dependant on crutches to get around. Still, he kept at it. Anthony said avoiding absences had been a goal of his since the fifth grade, when he realized he had something of a streak going. From then on, he said, he made it his goal to finish school without a single one. Eventually, to the delight of his classmates, he did. On June 5, during Goochland High School’s graduation ceremony, fel-

low members of the Class of 2016 cheered as Anthony was honored for achieving perfect attendance for his entire academic career. While Anthony was the only student in his graduating class to earn a perfect attendance record, he is not the first — or even the second — member of his family to achieve this distinction. His father, Juan Anthony Sr., earned the same honor when he graduated from Henrico High School in 1989, as did Juan Sr.’s twin sister, Dawn Freeman. Juan’s younger brother Justin made it all the way to fifth grade without ever missing a day, but was sadly felled by the flu during that year. Even so, he has since maintained a perfect record.

miles in support of Goochland Relay for Life on May 21. Dubbed “Iron Man” by fellow Relay participants, MacKay said he had initially set his goal at 25 miles, which would have been 100 laps around the Goochland Elementary School track. Inclement weather eventually forced Relay to be moved to the Goochland High School gym, which MacKay admitted made it a bit more difficult from a morale and endurance standpoint: what had been

100 quarter-mile laps suddenly turned into 600 smaller ones. McKay’s efforts were certainly appreciated by all of those involved with Relay, the largest fundraiser organized each year by the American Cancer Society. MacKay was in charge this year of heading up county employees’ participation in Relay, an effort that netted over $1,500 for the cause. That total will be added to the $40,000 raised countywide, as will the other donations MacKay said continue to roll in.

Health officials offer tips to avoid Zika Pick One Day strategy helps get rid of where mosquitoes live From Staff Reports

Officials with the Chickahominy Health District are promoting Pick One Day a Week to check for breeding sites on your property for the Asian tiger mosquito, which can transmit the Zika Virus. Pick One Day a Week is being encouraged through October. With a theme of “Pick-

a-Day to Fight-the-Bite,” the Chickahominy Health District offers the following facts: They only breed in standing water in man-made containers. They do not breed in ponds and puddles over soil. They live throughout Virginia. They tend to bite during the day. The usual pesticide spraying is not effective against them. They typically spend their lives within a 200-yard area. They develop into adults in about 10 days. Pick one day per week to empty or change the water in these pos-

Rain gutters. Any other man-made items that hold water. Rain barrels and cisterns. Recycling bins. Swimming pools. Tarps. Tires/tire swings.

Toys. Trash cans. Watering cans. Wheelbarrows. Utility carts. Protect yourself from bites: Use mosquito repellant. Carefully follow the directions. Approved ingredients include: DEET, Picaridin, IR3535. Wear long sleeves, pants, socks and shoes while outside. Have screens on windows and doors. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/zika or www. Unfortunately for a young artist intent on a career in fashion, Jefferson recalls, he couldn’t sew very well. Nor, despite a valiant attempt, could he manage to get much better at it. It was a tough blow for a kid who’d done well in school up to that point — Jefferson had been the President of his senior class — and the 18 year old found himself wondering what his next move would be. Fortunately, it didn’t take him long to figure it out. Knowing that he still had a passion for the fashion industry, Jefferson decided to switch his focus to retail. Though he was no longer directly involved in design, he soon found that he was well-suited to this new facet of the business. So well-suited,

in fact, that it took him less than two weeks after arriving in New York post-graduation to snag a job offer from Macy’s and a spot in their Executive Training Program. A few decades later, Jefferson spends his days at a job he loves, and insists that the fact that his original plan didn’t work out has never bothered him. “The fact that I failed at the design part was probably my saving grace,” he said, a lesson he recently shared when he was invited to deliver the 2016 Commencement Address for VCU’s School of the Arts. “I tell students all the time, it’s OK to try something new,” Jefferson said. “And you can keep trying out new things until something sticks.” As for his own life, Jefferson said he hasn’t ruled out a change for himself in the future as well. He owns some property in Goochland, where he still returns often to see family and attend church. Might he consider giving up life in the big city one day? “It’s been a thought,” Jefferson said with a chuckle. “I would not rule it out.” After all, he said, it never hurts to change things up.

Broadband a necessity By Roslyn Ryan Editor

For those of us who can remember before home computers became commonplace, back when school papers were typed on manual typewriters and messages were transmitted via the telephone on the wall — one with a cord — the fact that so much of our daily lives now revolves around our internet connections is pretty astounding. It also is, however, an undeniable fact. The internet has impacted just about every single thing most of us do every day -- from the way we watch movies, listen to music, choose restaurants, shop, date, go to school, support charitable causes, cook, stay in touch with our family and friends, travel, conduct business and pay bills. For many of us, as our internet connections go, so go our lives. I’m a bit embarrassed to admit — but will anyway — that I’m not sure I would know how to function without mine. The county is already way ahead in a number of areas that relate to quality of life, including having wonderful recreational facilities, toprated schools and an army of dedicated community volunteers. No, having access to broadband isn’t on the same level as having clean water or safe streets. But most would agree — as our local leaders thankfully appear to — that not having it is a problem worth fixing. ***

Often enough, if you keep your eyes open, life will toss a teachable moment your way. Case in point: My husband and I were fortunate enough to take in a professional baseball game in Baltimore over the Memorial Day holiday, and we found ourselves seated a few rows behind a young man who had obviously come to the game with the hope of catching a foul ball. He was around 30, I would guess, and was sporting both the home team’s colors and a well-worn outfielder’s glove. You had to hand it to the guy for his optimism. For the first several innings, if any ball looked as if it might land within 20 rows of us, he would spring up and position himself to catch it. When it invariably landed well out of his reach — and usually in the waiting hands of some other fan — he would simply sit back down and wait for the next one. Unfortunately for The Gloved One and most of the rest of those in attendance, it became apparent by around the seventh inning that the home team was not going to win the day. By the end of that inning, clearly disappointed, he and his companion got up and left. As God is my witness, he had not been gone five minutes when what seemed like the game’s hundredth foul ball was launched into the air… and landed squarely in his nowempty seat. Lesson learned: Sometimes patience pays.

Local CASA volunteers attend conference The annual conference for the national Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) organization was held at National Harbor in Washington D.C. this year, and Goochland was well represented. The conference brings together professionals from all 50 states and provides advocates, directors and board members fact-filled workshops that can help them in their individual programs. New ideas are often gleaned from networking opportunities with other CASA programs in other localities. This year, each Goochland CASA representative came away with an idea to present at the group’s own in-service training sessions this fall. Attendees included, from the left, Yvette McDermott Thomas (advocate); Ann O. Casey (Executive Director); Jennings Shields (advocate) and Eileen Kinelski (Volunteer Coordinator).

Letters to the Editor It’s time for action when it comes to the accidents on Fairground Road Dear Editor, I have rarely contributed my opinions to local newspapers in the past, but now I feel adamant about doing so. This pertains to the safety on one of our main roads leading to the Short Pump and I-64 area in Goochland County. Needless to say, there have been too many tragic accidents on this route for travelers coming and going, and the situation tends to be worsening as the population and business district growth continues. In studying the layout of this road, there seems to be no logical explanation for safety improvement that would not lead to tremendous problems of expense, etc. The road includes several extremely dangerous curves along the entire distance, which encompasses private property on both sides, allowing dangerously steep drops along the entire route. Even those marked areas

of guard rail make no improvements to the safety of travelers when a vehicle runs off the road due to speeding or poor weather conditions. I believe that any sort of improvement on this road would be almost impossible due to private land ownership. “Raising” the level of the road and removing the dangerous curves would be a major project in engineering and cost and would no doubt not even be possible to accomplish in any period of time without closing the road entirely while under construction. This would not be possible due to private home safety and access of entering and exiting these homes. Therefore, I am suggesting that perhaps consideration should be taken to strictly enforce a 45 mph speed limit (or less) along the entire stretch of Fairground Road. This would be the most logical suggestion in order to save lives. Drivers should be able to witness several state speed limit signs along the way! There is presently a 45 mph speed limit when leaving the

Goochland Court House area and up to Maidens Road. However, once people reach a more “open” stretch, they tend to drive the 55 mph limit even faster in order to reach Route 250, or wherever they are headed in the opposite direction. Sometimes this includes 65 mph, as I have witnessed. Endangering the lives of the innocent on this road must end. There is no reason why anyone needs to travel at speeds higher than 45 mph when they need to have full control of their vehicle when a split second decision needs to be made. Our local law enforcement would be extremely helpful in watching and monitoring the speed limit so that travelers would “get the hint” that the continuous speed limit along the entire stretch is law. It’s about time we all support some sort of an idea for the safety of our community in trying to end the fatal accidents on Fairground Road. Mildred Guthy Goochland

Benedictine salutes Class of 2016

B

enedictine College Preparatory School honored its 2016 graduating class on June 3, in a ceremony held at the school’s gymnasium on Sheppard Street in Richmond. The 63 graduating seniors, including Valedictorian Ethan Gleberman and Salutatorian Benjamin Metzger were joined by a host of proud family members, some of whom counted themselves as proud alumni of the school (Metzger, for example, is a fourth generation Cadet). After a message from speaker Mark B. Harvey, a beloved teacher who is retiring this year, the young men took part in the traditional plate-spinning ceremony, a longstanding custom that marks the end of a Cadet’s high school career. Then it was time for a spirited final rendition of the Benedictine Fight Song, and to bask in the titles they had worked so hard to achieve: graduates! Photo by Alex Williams

Memories that don’t fade Editor’s note: Due to an error in last week’s edition, the end of Jim Ridolphi’s column was cut off. We are reprinting the column in its entirety here. By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

After 55 years, one would assume memories of your father would fade and eventually become only bits and pieces in a brain filled with numerous past events and people. ... But it doesn’t work that way. Rarely a day passes when I don’t think of my father, and, on the best of days, I can still hear his voice. I still recall the routine of our constant life together provided, and the lessons I learned from him without realizing it at the time.

every day after work, and time before dinner was often spent with endless passes and kicks in the front yard. His arm was never too tired to throw the perfect spirals that came so hard they hurt, and he was never too tired from a trying day at work to refuse my advances, often made before he could get out of the car. My mother would yell at me from an open kitchen window, “Let him at least come in the house and rest a second,” but I never did. He didn’t seem to mind. The only thing that stopped our game was dinner or darkness. Besides the obvious benefits he passed on like knowing how to catch a football or throw a baseball, he also instilled in me a love of colsee Memories > 16

My earliest memories of my dad revolve around his love of sports, and his determined efforts to pass that devotion to this son. The old photos confirm my memories as a small 3-year-old boy snaps the ball to his father still clad in white shirt and tie from work. It wasn’t an unusual occurrence. If it was baseball season, he would retrieve his old flattened leather mitt from the tool shed. I could never understand how he could catch with that oldfashioned glove, but I don’t recall him missing many. But his real passion was football, and I would rush home after school, gather up the old worn leather football, and wait for his car to appear at the end of our street. Since it was a daily occurrence, he was well aware of what was waiting for him

Make your Fourth of July party

SIZZLE

T

he 4th of July is fast approaching and revelers across the nation are preparing to toast their independence with family and friends. For many Americans, backyard barbecues are synonymous with the Fourth of July, a day that, in the United States of America, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. Precious few Americans can say they have not been present at a 4th of July barbecue or witnessed a fireworks display honoring America’s official declaration of independence from Great Britain. Hosting a July 4th barbecue for the first time may have some hosts anxious about throwing a summer party to remember, but fun is sure to be had if hosts remember to include the following backyard barbecue essentials this Independence Day.

Food No Fourth of July barbecue is complete without food, so hosts should be sure to stock up on popular barbecue fare like hot dogs and hamburgers. Though such foods likely won’t be mistaken for gourmet fare anytime soon, Fourth of July revelers often embrace the tradition of grilling up some hot dogs and hamburgers even if they tend to avoid such foods throughout the rest of the year. Hosts should not feel pressured to provide gourmet fare on July 4th, but it is a thoughtful gesture to ask guests in advance if they have any food allergies or need to avoid certain foods for other reasons.

Beverages It goes without saying that guests will need refreshing beverages at parties held in early July, but be sure to stock up on a variety of beverages so guests are not forced to consume drinks they don’t want. Be sure to have plenty of water available to guests, and provide sodas, iced tea and lemonade as well. Offer alcoholic beverages to adult guests, but don’t go overboard stocking up on alcohol, as that might encourage guests to overindulge.

MetroCreative photo

No Fourth of July barbecue is complete without food, and the smell of the grill is sure to get guests’ mouths watering.

Games

Safety

Backyard barbecues are most fun when guests are entertained, so plan to have some games available for guests of all ages. Encourage guests to bring a change of clothes or swimsuits if games will involve water or something that might soil their clothing. If you have a pool, purchase some pool games so swimmers can do more than just wade in the water or take a few laps. Plan a Wiffle ball game for kids and dig some horseshoe pits or buy a ring toss set so adults can engage in some friendly competition as well.

Though no one wants to think of a 4th of July celebration taking a turn for the worst, hosts must prepare for emergencies. Restock the first-aid kit if necessary and keep a constant eye on guests, especially children, to ensure everyone is having a safe and happy time. Program a list of local taxi companies into your phone so you can easily call for transportation should any guests have too much to drink during the festivities. Hosts should abstain from alcohol so they can serve as designated driver should the need arise at the end of the night. Backyard barbecues are a staple of July 4th, and there’s no reason your’s be one to remember. — MetroCreative

Goochland’s Chase Bernstein (far) and Ryan Bernstein (near) combined to win the Group 2A state doubles championship at Radford University on June 10. Chase also won the Group 2A singles title.

Goochland brothers bring home two tennis titles By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

It was a good weekend to be on the tennis courts for the state championship and have the last name of Bernstein. Goochland’s Chase and Ryan Bernstein combined to win the Group 2A state doubles title one day after Chase won his second Group 2A singles title in a row. Chase defeated John-Reed Barnes of Gate City 6-1, 6-1

on Thursday at Radford. Chase had defeated John Battle’s Reed Crabtree 6-0, 6-0 earlier that day to advance to the final. “It didn’t take Chase long in the semifinal and he was well rested for the final,” Goochland tennis coach Eric Schlaud said. “He faced John Reed (Barnes) for the final, who is a great player and a great athlete. He took a couple games from Chase. Chase had a little difficulty with the wind in the finals, but he did really well.”

Chase paired up with Ryan on Friday morning for the doubles semifinals and had a rematch with his singles semifinal opponent, Crabtree. Crabtree’s partner was John Haderer, but the result was the same as the singles semifinal as the Goochland pair advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 win. “That was another quick match,” Schlaud said. “They played strong through the first set.” Chase and Ryan faced off

against Maggie Walker’s Karl Katlaps and Pierce Tarry, who had advanced to the finals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Barnes and Peyton Palmer. Katlaps and Chase are familiar foes as the two faced off in the Group 2A final in both singles and doubles last year. Chase won the singles title 6-3, 6-0, but fell to the Katlaps-Tarry duo in doubles 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. This match was what Schlaud described as “very good tennis,” but the Bernstein broth-

ers held on to win 6-4, 6-3 and take home the second tennis championship of the weekend for the Bulldogs. “They had a wonderful match against Maggie Walker,” Schlaud said. “They had to work hard together and separately and really focus on what they were doing on the court.” Chase’s singles title is the first successful defense of a title in the short history of Group 2A. Group A, which Goochland

was a member of until the reclassification , last saw back-to-back champions when Kan Tagami of George Mason defended his title in 2011-12. Schlaud said that the goals for next season are quite high. He wants a clean sweep. “It’s great for the program and great for the team,” he said of the Bernstein titles. “(Chase and Ryan) are excited to come back next year and do it again next year. The team title is the goal next year.”

Bulldogs fall in state final to MWGS 3-1 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

RADFORD—Goochland starting pitcher Tanner Bradshaw was rolling through the first four innings in the Group 2A state championship game against Maggie Walker at Radford University on Saturday. Prior to the fifth inning, only three of the 13 batters Bradshaw faced had reached base and none of them had gotten past second thanks to his strong pitching, strong defense and heads up play. But, then came the fifth and Bradshaw’s gem, and ultimately Goochland’s state championship hopes, went away as the Green Dragons scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth that would eventually lead to a 3-1 win and the state championship. “He had that one rough inning,” Goochland head coach Wes Farkas said. “There are lots of opportunities to second guess decisions, but I thought he was in pretty good control going up against the bottom half of their lineup.” Goochland jumped on Maggie Walker starter Francis Celentano early, getting two hits in the first inning and then two more in the second, including Reid Chenault’s double that led

to him scoring off a Coleman Duty sacrifice fly to get the Bulldogs on the board 1-0. After that point, however, Celentano got in a groove and didn’t allow Goochland to string hits together. The Bulldogs were hitting the ball squarely, but the Green Dragons’ defense was right there for a quick putout. “I thought we could have hit way better than we did,” Farkas said. “I thought we hit it hard most of the time. Credit to (Celentano), he mixed it up well.” Maggie Walker’s James Wyatt led the fateful fifth inning off with a single, followed by another single from Matthew Haines and another by Henry Haas to load the bases. Nathan Berry grounded into a fielder’s choice at second, scoring Wyatt to tie the game at 1-1. Bradshaw struck out Tommy Snead to get a big second out and Farkas turned to reliever Nic Norman. Cole Ragone was next to the plate and busted the game open for the Green Dragons, hitting a 2-RBI single to centerfield, scoring Haas and Haines to make it 3-1. “They just got a couple hits backto-back-to-back,” Farkas said. “At this level, this game, you can’t have that.

Goochland’s Andrew Harcum (5) tags Maggie Walker’s Forrest Smith (2) out at second as he tried to steal the base.

It’s tough.” Those runs fell right into what Maggie Walker coach Meade Langhorne had told his team. “We had said that if Frankie is on the mound in the fifth inning, we just need a couple runs and we’ll win the game,” he said. “We needed two and we got three.” Goochland tried to counter in the bottom of the sixth, sparked by Chenault reaching third base on an error in right field, but a fly out to centerfield ended that threat. While Celentano issued a one-out walk to Jeb Anderson in the bottom of

the seventh, he dispatched Noah Doczi and Norman with two flyballs to end the game and clinch the title for the Green Dragons. “We never gave up,” Langhorne said. “We played an excellent team and knew it was going to be a battle.” Goochland ended the season three runs shy of winning the state championship and with a 21-5 record. It was the second time the Bulldogs fell to the Green Dragons this season, with the first time coming in the rainshortened Region 2A East final. While the team will lose 10 players due to graduation next season, Farkas

said that they’re confident that making it to the cusp of a state title will only stoke the fire for the players that will return next season. “I told the guys, a loss is always tough no matter what,” he said, “but we made it to second in the state. We had a lot of seniors on the team and that sets the bar pretty high for the future of the program. Guys are going to be hungry to get back here again.” Goochland defeated defending state champion Virginia High 11-4 in the semifinals in Salem on Friday to advance to play Maggie Walker in the final.

Goochland girls soccer falls in 2A state semifinals 2-1 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland’s defense held up throughout much of the first half against the Radford attack on Friday in the Group 2A state semifinal. But, the Bulldogs just couldn’t hold out throughout the entire game. Goochland allowed two goals, one in the 39th minute and another in the 56th and fell to the Bobcats 2-1. Maddie Goff scored the lone goal of the match for Goochland. “We didn’t perform as well as we

could,” Goochland coach Tom Reid said. “The heat got to us. Their feet were killin’ them. The heat got to them and they were wore out in the first 10 minutes.” Within those first 10 minutes, Goochland had one of its best offensive chances of the game. Rachel McCann drove on the net with two defenders flanking her and put a shot on net that tipped off the hands of the Radford goalie and went off the crossbar. The Bulldogs were able to sustain some pressure after the ensuing corner

kick, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Much of the rest of the first half was all Radford. The Bobcats were able to keep the ball in the Goochland defensive zone, with the Bulldogs only occasionally making trips to the Radford end. Goalie Catherine Ford was stellar in net for the Bulldogs, allowing just the one goal in the 39th minute for a 1-0 halftime deficit. The Bulldogs were seemingly a different team in the second half. They came out much more aggressive and

had chances right on net. In the 47th minute, Madie Panas had a chance on net that went just wide. McCann had a shot in the 50th minute, but also was off the mark. Throughout the game, Radford’s speed allowed them to flip the field very quickly, which led to a one-onone chance for the Bobcats and the second goal in the 56th minute. McCann and Goff paired up for a two-on-one attack in the 79th minute, which Goff sent on net and went trickling past Ivy Schafer, the netminder

for the Bobcats, to bring the Bulldogs within a goal. “They worked hard for that goal,” Reid said. “They played well. I’m pleased.” But, with just one minute remaining in the game, Goochland was unable to find the equalizer. Goochland ended the season just one game shy of a chance at the 2A state championship. “I’m pleased, we had a good year,” Reid said. “They played well all year. We just couldn’t get it executed. Now, we have to get ready for next year.”

June 16, 2016

Memories continued from >10 lege football that never left me. His education at the University of Alabama was interrupted by World War II, and he was drafted and entered OCS (Officer Candidate School) at Fort Benning, Georgia, eventually serving in the Philippines. On Saturday evenings during football season, we spent hours turning the dial of an old Philco radio trying to find the Alabama game. It was long before the time of

ESPN or nationally televised games, and we only heard the Crimson Tide at a barely audible level for brief periods between the static. When I was a little boy, I remember my parents taking me to a Maryland-Alabama game in Baltimore. His excitement at finally getting to witness the team first-hand was unapologetic and not hidden well. Following the game and the serious beating Maryland put on the visitors, he wasn’t as happy, but just being there somehow made the misery of defeat more tolerable.

TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30

Unfortunately, he didn’t live long enough to watch Alabama recapture the grandeur of the past and return to national prominence on the football field, so I’ve assumed his role as the number one fan north of Atlanta. It’s one of the many things in my life that brings me joy that I attribute to a man who made a huge difference in a short period of time, and confirmed something I still know today. It’s not quantity, it’s quality that really counts. I especially thought about him last January when Alabama captured another

national title on the football field and could almost hear his cheering voice. The plays on that field that day dazzled millions of viewers and impacted the national college football scene. In my mind, they were no more or no less important that those passes I caught many years ago in the front yard from a man who still garners the love and respect of a son who loves and respects him no less than those wonderful days almost 55 years ago. Lucky to have him for those 10 short years? You bet I was.
