Community raising money for Bolivian orphanage Contributed Report

Alex Fruth’s AP Human Geography students at Goochland High School are commencing a fundraiser for an orphanage in Bolivia called “Stansberry Children’s Home. The class plans on raising funds through donut sales and will be taking pre-orders for Crispy Kreme donuts the week of April 8. The high school students are participating in the school system’s G21 (Goochland 21st Century Skills) program, which requires the use of technology in education. “The objective of the fundraiser said Renae Townsend, ESL (English as Second Language) teacher, “is to help students collaborate together for a good cause

and to develop empathy by becoming globally involved. There is plenty of Goochland community collaboration in this fundraiser. Several of the involved Goochland community members are GMS parent Cynthia Stansberry, DVM; Ann Casey, director of Goochland CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates); and Renae Townsend, ESL teacher in Goochland. Dr. Stansberry’s grandparents, Elena and John Stansberry, founded the Stansberry Children’s Home in Bolivia in 1954. Through this connection, Renae Townsend and sister Jennette Townsend, traveled to Bolivia two years ago. Ann Casey, who has her MA in Early Childhood, is donating preschool materials

to this endeavor as well as her own designed corresponding teacher’s guide. Fruth has generously offered his AP Human Geography class as the venue for this fund raiser. As part of the G21 project, Fruth’s students have worked together on a solution for sending donated materials to the orphanage in Bolivia. “With community collaboration, Fruth said, “we hope to be able to send Ms. Casey’s preschool materials to the Stansberry Children’s Home by the end of this school year. Anyone interested in contributing to this community fundraiser and ordering Crispy Kreme donuts the week of April 8 can conContributed Photo tact Alex Fruth at his email Jennette Townsend poses with orphans at the Stansberry Children’s Home in Bolivia.
