Festival continued from > page 3 planting, using hydroponic techniques, and preserving your garden bounty. Lectures on ornamental grasses, low-maintenance perennials, edible flowers, and herbs will provide useful tips and techniques for adding beauty to your landscapes. You can also learn how to plan a water-wise landscape, garden in a shady back yard, select and use mulch effectively, identify and manage ornamental and tree diseases, and use native plants to address challenging landscape situations or attract wildlife to your gardens. In hands-on workshops you can learn how

to create, construct, and grow: a “topsy-turvy” tiered planter, a succulent wall planter frame, a shitake mushroom log, a gourd birdhouse, or a basic bonsai planter. Classes are taught by local master gardeners, extension agents, and horticulturalists. Registration is required to attend classes and workshops and they are filled on a firstcome, first-served basis, so register early to sign up for your favorites. Call the Goochland Extension Office (556-5841) or visit the website www.gpmga. org for additional information and to sign-up for classes. A $10 pre-registration fee covers all classes for the day with a moderate additional charge for hands-

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County on workshops or registering at the door. If you don’t have time for classes, there is no charge for browsing and shopping. The public is invited to stop by any time during the event to stroll the beautifully renovated campus landscape and display gardens, visit the “how-to” stations, and get horticultural questions answered at the “Ask a Master Gardener” tent. This year there will be a “Kid’s Tent” where children can plant items to take home and grow through the summer. Vendors, including the JSRCC Hort Club, will be selling a variety of interesting plants and other garden-related items. The popular Master Gardeners’ plant sale provides an opportunity to stock up on plants at great prices. And, don’t forget

to pick up a free plant at that booth! Mark your calendar now and plan to attend Spring Garden Fest on April 27. It is a wonderful way to welcome a new and beautiful season to central Virginia. Extension is a joint program of Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and state and local governments. If you are a person with a disability and desire any assistive devices, services or other accommodations to participate in this activity, please contact Shannon Grayson, Goochland Extension office at (804)-5565841 or (800) 828-1120 (TDD) during business hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to discuss accommodations five days prior to the event.

The League’s visit, along with several guests, was very educational and enlightening, as they toured the school buildings, comfortably sat for the program in one of the schools, and listened to the former students’ experiences as students. The former students recounted their appreciation for caring, capable teachers, the high quality of the education and the strict disciipline required by their teachers and parents. An important revelation was about the parental and community enthusiasm and willingness

The League chose to visit two nearby, still standing, schools at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Gum Springs, and Second Union Baptist Church, Goochland. Both of these buildings are currently undergoing restoration, a project of former students. Formal use of the schools was ended as late as 1959 and 1962.

This was in keeping with Rosenthal’s principle that recipients of his gifts contribute both labor and money, an effort to inspire pride and ownership. The League of Women Voters and their guests are grateful to their contacts/facilitators for the visit: Mrs. Deloris Hicks for Shady Grove, and Mr. Calvin Hopkins for Second Union. An interesting aspect of the day was the surprise reunion of one of the guests

on the visit, Dr. Fred Orelove, retired VCU Professor, and Mrs. Hicks. They had worked together years ago at VCU! Also in attendance was Ms. Sylvia Yount of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, who has presented programs on some of the other recipients of Rosenwald’s philanthropy. This was a rewarding, enlightening education about an important episode in the history of our Commonwealth, an episode which has begun to come to light in our state in recent months.
