Supervisors decide 4-1 in favor of roundabout

‘We will never forget’

Construction on project at Fairground, Sandy Hook intersection won’t likely begin until 2021 By Roslyn Ryan Editor

In a 4-1 decision on Sept. 5, Goochland County Supervisors voted to approve the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Fairground Road and Sandy Hook Road. Noting during the board comment period that around 90 percent of the many responses she received from her constituents were against the measure, District 1 supervisor Susan Lascolette was the only board member to vote against it. The topic of how county leaders should address traffic issues at the intersection had been a subject of much debate in recent weeks, with many residents questioning both whether a roundabout would be, as representatives from VDOT insisted, a safer option than installing a light at the intersection. According to information provided by VDOT during the Sept. 5 meeting and also during a community information session in August, roundabouts have been shown in studies to eliminate 80 percent of the type of accidents that lead to fatalities. While accidents do occur, officials explained, they typically involve see Roundabout > 3

continued from >1 a remembrance ceremony. For him and his family, he explained, the loss of so many fire and rescue personnel hit especially close to home. Tom’s wife Robin has been an active fire and rescue volunteer for much of her life, and both of their children have also served as volunteers. Their son is now a professional firefighter. Tom Hillman didn’t personally know anyone lost in the attacks, but he says the day forever changed his life. “Just seeing it happen, and

knowing that we had lost 307 men and women, fellow first responders, it’s a moment I will never forget,” he said, describing the day as his generation’s equivalent to the Pearl Harbor attacks that galvanized the generation before. The Hillmans joined fellow emergency service personnel — and plenty of others who simply wanted to mark the day — for a brief presentation by Goochland Fire and Rescue Chief Bill McKay, who recounted his own experience working at the World Trade Center site in the immediate aftermath of the attacks. If anyone ever wanted to see an example of people from

all different walks of life coming together to support one another, McKay said, it would have been hard to find a better one. Goochland Supervisor Ken Peterson also recounted his experience of Sept. 11, sharing that he had been working in Manhattan and had been effectively trapped on the island after the attacks. As horrific an experience as it was, he recalled, he still clearly remembers seeing an American military jet circling low over Manhattan as if to signal that the military was in control and protecting those on the ground. It was only then, said Peterson, a former Army para-

trooper, that he began to feel safe. After the indoor presentations, which included a video montage of images and audio from the terror attacks, the group headed outdoors to the firehouse’s 911 memorial. The space, which features a large piece of steel from the north tower of the Trade Center and five small benches arranged to represent the Pentagon, is described as a contemplative memorial, and the only one of its kind in the state. In a fitting end to the evening, the Beaux Ties, an a cappella group from St. Christopher’s School, per-

formed the National Anthem as the last bit of daylight faded away. As McKay said, the evening was about coming together and reiterating what have become the two most important words associated with that terrible day 16 years ago: never forget.

continued from >1 glancing blows between two vehicles trying to occupy the same lane rather than the head-on or T-bone collisions that can occur at intersections governed by traffic lights. Sharing that he had received a great deal of feedback from residents both for and against the roundabout, District 5’s Ken Peterson said he knew the supervisors faced a difficult decision. In addition to concerns about safety, some residents

had raised questions about how to teach drivers unfamiliar with roundabouts to navigate one. “This is going to be one of those instances where its going to be very difficult to make everyone happy,” Peterson said, though he insisted the intersection does need to be improved. As the intersection stands currently, drivers attempting to turn left from Fairground Road onto Sandy Hook Road face long wait times, particularly during peak travel times. The spot is 8th on the list of worst intersections in the

county, according to assistant county administrator Todd Kilduff. Addressing the issue shortly before the vote, District 2 supervisor Manuel Alvarez recounted a recent trip to Fluvanna to see how residents dealt with the roundabout currently in use in a heavily travelled area of that county. While he understood residents’ concerns about the roundabout, he said, “I just can’t imagine that we Goochlanders can’t learn to use one.” Looking ahead at the projections for increased traffic

through the intersection, “I think we have the opportunity now to do something,” Alvarez continued. “We have to think ahead, and while right now a light seems like the solution, I think in the future a roundabout is going to move traffic better.” According to Kilduff, construction on the project will not likely begin until 2021, and would takae around 10 months. Roads would more than likely remain open, with lane closures used to move traffic through the while construction was underway.

Sheriff’s Office offering residents a way to get rid of unused medication Contributed report

Next month, the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 14th opportunity in 7 years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. On Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. area residents may bring pills for disposal to Co. 5 Fire/Rescue at 2710 Fairground Road, or West Creek Emergency Center at 12720 Tuckahoe Creek Parkway in Henrico. The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps, only pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Last April, Goochland County collection sites received 400 pounds in four hours, and The Commonwealth of Virginia received 26,975 pounds of prescription drugs at statewide sites. This initiative addresses a vital public

safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines — flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash — both pose potential safety and health hazards. For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the Oct. 28, Take Back Day event, go to the DEA Diversion website or contact Goochland Sheriff’s Office at (804) 5565349.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

A matter of language: sometimes ‘wrong’ is just right By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Several months ago, after learning that I had spent the past decade or so working as a community newspaper editor, a gentleman I’d only recently met asked me if I considered myself to be “one of those grammar snobs.” “Dear God, no,” I told him, insisting that, on the contrary, I have seen far too many of my own errors make it into print over the years to ever take a swipe at anyone else. Put another way: Living in a grammatical glass house, I’ve learned

to stow my stones. Truth be told, particularly when it comes to spoken English, I adore the many twists and flourishes our native language acquires as it passes through the different regions of the country. And while I will admit that I still can’t really abide the use of socalled “text lingo” in a professional setting – I wouldn’t sub the word “tho” for “though,” for example, in an email to my supervisor any sooner than I would sign off by typing “ttyl” – I don’t think any true lover of language can be upset by permutations in usage.

Once upon a time, while living in Maine, I delighted in the speech patterns and phrases that were so foreign to my Virginia-tuned ear. And years earlier, spending time in New Mexico, I found it impossible not to embrace the vibrant mix of Spanish and English (referred to as Spanglish, naturally) that peppered everyday conversations. No, in just about every instance — except when doing my job — I am almost always content to let a person’s words be what they are, no matter if they are technically “correct” or not.

In fact, there is only one recent time that I recall, if for just a moment, almost morphing into the know-itall that I try so hard not to be. After a full hour of debating some political question with a good friend, he came to the conclusion that we were both simply too stubborn to see it the other’s way. “At this point,” he said, “we’re just beating this with a dead horse.” No, I pointed out, “we’re beating a dead horse.” “That’s what I said,” he replied. Reader, I am happy to announce: I let it go.

Power of Mother Nature shouldn’t be underestimated By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

When a wave of low pressure first appeared off the Cape Verde coast of Africa more than two weeks ago, no one paid it much notice. But less than three days later, the storm had a name, and forecasters in the United States began to pay closer attention to a hurricane named Irma. But, for most of us, it was still just an item in the news. Even for the many who have relatives and friends in Florida, it didn’t seem that serious, and we’ve learned to

live with the threat of an occasional Atlantic storm that reaches hurricane strength. Days after it formed, Irma began a path of destruction through the Caribbean, and set its sights on the Florida Keys. National news outlets began full-time coverage of the storm, and photos of long lines of automobiles exiting the narrow strip of bridges and islands alerted the less novice of the impending doom. I didn’t need the reaffirmation of what a hurricane can do when it hits a small group of islands that some call paradise, and many more

now call home. Decades earlier, I’d stood at a small memorial on Upper Matecumbe Key and read the tributes to the more than 400 people who died in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. A cement crypt located near the monument contains the cremated remains of more than 200 of its victims, a somber reminder of the fury that lurks only yards away from the memorial. Weather forecasts didn’t name storms in those days, but the Labor Day hurricane didn’t need one to be remembered as the strongest hurricane to ever hit the Florida Keys, with recorded winds of 185

mph and storm surges more than 20 feet. Islamorada was a different place in the mid-1930s, sparsely populated and undeveloped. The islands were dotted with WPA work camps manned by World War I veterans who found work building the Overseas Highway and other infrastructure on the Keys. Warnings of the impending storm came too late to evacuate the workers, and many were forced to face the wind and rain in temporary shelters or tents. A train was see Hurricane > 7

Letters to the Editor Local neighborhood residents question fairness of gas company’s plans Dear Editor, On behalf of Broad Run II, I’ve been embroiled in a Natural Gas situation for a number of months. For residents that don’t know, Columbia Gas of Virginia has exclusive rights to provide Natural Gas to Goochland County. This eliminates competition and creates a potential price gauging scenario. Our neighborhood happens to sit right across from a TransCanada Gas Compressor Station and we do not have access to Natural Gas today. Columbia Gas of Virginia and, soon, the City of Richmond use this site as a point of delivery. The City of Richmond could easily (and economically) provide our neighborhood Natural gas but are prevented from doing so. Columbia Gas of Virginia has provided “planning” numbers for our residents to connect in the future; however, the numbers are exorbitant. Broad Run II has even issued a complaint to the State Corporation Commission in this matter. The SCC seems uninterested in getting involved even though this matter is directly related to their charter. At the County and State Legislature level, we have received excellent attention and focus and hope for favorable results. However, as a long time State of Virginia citizen, I’m troubled that this situation is allowed to exist. Sincerely, Scott Parks Manakin Sabot

Reynolds Police Department earns full accreditation once again Contributed report

The Reynolds Community College Police Department has achieved reaccreditation by the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC) for its commitment to law enforcement excellence and recent successful completion of the

Hurricane continued from >6 sent from Miami to rescue the veterans, but the wind from the storm blew it off the tracks near Matacumbe Key. While people still remember the great Galveston storm as the most devastating regarding the loss of human life, the Labor Day storm of 1935 claimed almost half of the then population of the middle keys and destroyed what we now know as Islamorada. It’s still unknown the true extent of the damage Irma caused to the Florida Keys, but its path up the western coast

re-certification process for the Virginia Law Enforcement Accreditation Program. Accreditation programs are designed to measure and confirm compliance of the participating agency with the professional standards in whatever discipline or profession they are involved. Reynolds is

the only Virginia Community College Police Department that has achieved the VLEPSC accreditation. “I am honored to accept this recognition on behalf of the men and women of the Reynolds Police Department for their hard work and dedication in reaching this mile-

stone,” said Chief Paul Ronca. “Our team is devoted to leading the way for other community college police departments to become part of VLEPSC and demonstrate a willingness to be measured by and compared to other law enforcement agencies.” To obtain accreditation,

a law enforcement agency must meet all applicable program standards, maintain their accreditation files on an on-going basis, and provide annual verifications of compliance as required by the Commission. “This process confirms that the Reynolds Police

of Florida is well documented and cleanup will be long and arduous for Floridians hit by the storm. That possibility hit close to home as the storm headed for Tampa late last week. My sister, her children and grandchildren live in the greater Tampa area, so my concern for what was being described as a storm of epic proportion headed for the flood-prone area was heightened. On Friday, I called and tried to convince her to move northward and come to Richmond to ride out the storm, but she felt the solid construction and hurricane-proof windows on

her home would provide a safe refuge from the storm. Despite my best efforts, she decided to stay. Next morning, I learned the whole family was on the move, evacuated and on the way to an unknown destination preferably far away from the attacking storm. They ended up sheltering in Myrtle Beach until the storm passed Tampa and

caused less damage that originally anticipated. We won’t know the true cost of Irma for days or weeks, and some communities will take years to rebuild and reclaim their portion of the Florida dream. For me, watching day after day of bumper-to-bumper traffic exiting the state to avoid Hurricane Irma is a somber reminder that para-

dise is never guaranteed and living near a tropical oasis has a price. Thousands of Floridians are feeling that pinch as they begin to file back into the state, my sister included. ith a focus on history and a passion for teaching and learning, Goochland’s Field Day of the Past will bring back the days of yore

this weekend. For 25 years, Field Day of the Past has been offering an educational, entertaining and exciting event for the whole family, growing from a “nice little show” that displayed tractors and Virginia History to attracting 45,000 people in three days. “We want to create opportunities for cross-generational sharing,” said Melinda Gammon, Field Day of the Past’s Executive Director. “The show is really about grandparents sharing with grandkids how life used to be in a fun and interactive setting.” Field Day of the Past has grown over the past quarter century, but it still keeps close to its goal to provide fun and educational entertainment for everyone in the family, with an eye to preserving and presenting Virginia’s history as well as offering more traditional fair activities to entice even your most boring friend. For those interested in history, Field Day of the Past has a plethora of activities. Commemorating the 75th anniversary of America’s involvement in World War II and the 100th anniversary of America’s involvement in World War I, Field Day of the Past will offer exhibits depicting the lives of Americans during the Great Wars and a World War II encampment which will also display WWII era vehicles. Civil War buffs will enjoy Richmond Discoveries’ Civil War Camp with demonstrations and displays of artifacts from the era. Be sure to check in with Hoyt Hill to learn about the madness and mercies of Civil War medicine. Little farmers and big ones alike will be delighted by the Friendly Farmers Barnyard Review, a two person, farm themed family variety show, which includes agricultural information, farm safety tips, comedy, music, art, farm themed magic and illusions will join the lineup this year. pencer 2 Dogs Bolejack, an 11th generation North Carolinian, will be demonstrating primitive survival skills at the 25th anniversary of Field Day of the Past. Bolejack was raised on a tobacco farm in North Carolina. When the business went under, the family relocated to a forest outside of Asheville where the family lived off the land. Today, Bolejack teaches primitive survival skills on Cole Mountain in North Carolina. An apprentice of mountain man Eustace Conway in the 1990s, Bolejack holds rank in multiple styles of martial arts including a 5th degree black belt in ninjutsu. Bolejack gave everything away and moved into the woods for a total of three years, surviving on little and accumulating many of the skills he teaches. His exhibits typically include odd items from the woods, such as bones, cordage, fiber, plants, some fur, a turtle shell and fire by friction tools. Each item is used as a starting point to discuss something unique about mountain culture from the past.

n May 2016, Homestead Creamery launched its new marketing campaign with the introduction of its Calf Tour. The creamery, located in Franklin County, VA, opened in 2001 and sells diary products such as milk (in glass bottles), ice cream, lemonade, custard and eggnog. Selling dairy products was not enough for Homestead, however. “Not only do we want to promote our products, but we also want to educate the consumer and show communities up and down the East Coast that we care about them and their health,” said partowner Brandon Montgomery, when the Calf Tour was launched. Since the Calf Tour took to the road, the calves have visited fairs, festivals, grocery stores, schools and other places with their message. The Calf Tour has participated in events in Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina, Ohio and Georgia educating children and adults alike on the care of dairy cows, offering free samples of their goods, and offering the public the opportunity to talk to a “real, live” dairy farmer.

ust and Flame is calling for apprentice blacksmiths to join them at the 25th anniversary of Field Day of the Past in September. Rust and Flame offers up blacksmith demonstrations which offer interactive projects. Rust and Flame is operated by Beverly and Marvin Gardner. Marvin has a degree in education and drama and taught school for almost a decade. He started blacksmithing as a hobby. A cousin saw his project portfolio at a family reunion and invited Marvin to work with him in special effects in Hollywood. He was there 13 years before going to Georgia to work on the movie, “The War” with Kevin Costner in 1993. It was during that time he met Beverly and decided to leave the movie industry and open a blacksmith shop in LaGrange, Georgia. In 2010 Marvin and Beverly decided to make their shop mobile and offer interactive educational entertainment at county and state fairs. This year is the eighth season the couple has been traveling throughout Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida and Kentucky.

Field Day Stamp recalls America’s involvement in both World Wars Contributed report

In commemoration of U.S. involvement in both World Wars, Field Day of the Past has developed a special cancellation stamp to be used in the Field Day Post office during this year’s event. The stamp, drawn by Anne Menefee, will play on the Uncle Sam’s “I want YOU” poster used by the U.S. during World War I and World War II. The poster was adopted in 1917 soon after the U.S. declared war with Germany in World War I. Uncle Sam’s request was used to recruit young men into the fight during World War I and World War II. It is estimated that upwards of 5,000,000 of the posters were printed before the end of World War II. The Cancellation Stamp can be purchased on envelopes and postcards in the Field Day of the Past

Post office all three days of the show. Mail is cancelled daily, so the stamp will bear the date you purchase it. The Field Day of the Past Post Office was opened on the grounds in 1996. It is an official post office from which stamps can be purchased and mail sent. The post office is manned by retired postal employees and is recognized as an official post office during show days. Mail has been received from this postal station in places as far away as Japan and Hawaii. Each year a special cancellation stamp is designed for the show. Many of our visitors have collected all of these stamps. Envelopes and post cards bearing the cancellation stamp can be purchased for $1.00. The Post office will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Ask The Gazette Recently, the Gazette put a notice on our Facebook page about a new feature called Ask The Gazette. We received several great questions and have answered one here for our readers this week. Have a Goochland-related question for the Gazette? Send it to rryan@goochlandgazette.com or call (804) 339-7956. Dear Goochland Gazette, Why so many ridiculously slow speed limits in the county — Route 45 for one? Michael Hauser Ok, so for this one we went straight to the expert, and in this case that meant calling Virginia Department of Transportation

(VDOT) District Traffic Engineer Robert Vilac. According to Vilac, speed limits are based on a Federal standard and typically take into consideration a road’s design and environment when deciding what the posted limit should be. So, just because two roads look similar, they may not have the same posted speeds. When VDOT gets a call from a resident who is concerned that a speed limit isn’t appropriate for a certain area — the vast majority of those calls, Vilac says, are from people saying the speed limit is too high — the department may head out to the spot to collect

more data. Vilac says the Richmond District gets “a couple” of those speed limit-related calls a week, which actually isn’t that many when you consider that the district stretches south from Hanover to the Virginia-North Carolina border and west to Louisa, covering 19,000 lane miles. One other thing to note? Just because you don’t see a speed limit sign doesn’t mean you get to decide how fast you want to go. By statute, the speed limit in all residential areas is 25 mph, and 35 mph on unpaved roads. On all other unposted roads, feel free to pick it up to 55 mph.

At first I was very concerned. Petrified. Frightened at the scene before

Fairfax rallies county Dems ahead of statewide election Speaking to voters in Goochland County on Sunday, Justin Fairfax, Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, conveyed the immense power of the Virginia voter in 2017. In less than two months, voters across the Commonwealth will “get a hand in authoring [a] new chapter in American history—sending a signal about who we are,” said Fairfax. “People will look to us as a sign of things to come across the nation.” Casting recent politics from the White House as a political darkness of hatred and fear, Fairfax told 117 guests that Virginia voters “can choose to reject that dark path” on Tuesday, November 7 and “embrace the light of hope and inclusion and progress.”

The event was part of the Goochland Democratic Committee’s annual Ice Cream Social fundraiser held at the Historic Tuckahoe Plantation, the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson. Fairfax, an attorney and former federal prosecutor of Northern Virginia, opposes State Sen. Jill Vogel (R-Fauquier) in the lieutenant governor race. \Raised in a single-parent family, he credited his grandparents, along with their church and neighbors, for growing up with a bounty of “spiritual wealth.” Because of this, the passion of his life became fighting to give people the same shot he was given, believing you should “lift as you climb” to give back to others.

“I know that we repay a collective spiritual debt when we open up opportunities for more people,” asserted Fairfax. “We as Democrats are on the right side of history.” “We are in the process of rebirthing, of reclaiming our values of what it means to live in this country where all people are created equal, where everyone gets a shot at the American dream,” said Fairfax. “No matter how dark today may seem, tomorrow can be brighter.” Absentee voting for this election begins September 22. Voters registered in Goochland County can request a ballot in-person at the Goochland Registrar (1800 Sandy Hook Rd.) or online at elections.virginia.gov. — William E. Quarles, Jr.

Goochland’s Alexis Wiggins (right) sends a spike attempt past the leaping Maggie Walker defenders. Wiggins was a game-changer for the Bulldogs and will continue to be a force in their lineup this season.

Wiggins powers Bulldogs past Maggie Walker By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

There were times during the match at Goochland High School when Maggie Walker Governor’s School tried to take a lead away from the Bulldogs girls volleyball team. The Green Dragons would

seem to gain momentum and try to swing the set in their favor. Enter Alexis Wiggins. Wiggins consistently and definitively would step up and get a key kill and blow away the Green Dragons defense to protect the Bulldogs lead in the 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 win

for Goochland. “Alexis always wants the ball,” coach Jennifer Erixon wrote in an email. “She’s one of the most competitive girls on the team. She wants the ball set to her so she can get the kill. Obviously, it’s incredibly valuable to have someone like Alexis who puts the ball

away.” In the first set, the two teams traded the lead back and forth through the first 11 points before Goochland got ahead by two points thanks to two Maggie Walker errors. Two points from Wiggins and another by Maddie Goff turned a three point lead

into a six point lead and the Bulldogs wouldn’t look back in the first set. The Green Dragons opened the second set on a 5-0 run before Wiggins came up with another of her timely kills to stop the streak. Wiggins would score the first four points of the second

set for Goochland. Maggie Walker led at one point by a score of 7-1, but eventually committed three straight errors to erase the lead the Green Dragons had built and let Goochland back into the set. A point by Faith Gerdes see Volleyball> 14

Goochland powers past Chargers to start 3-0 By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Despite some mistakes, the Goochland Bulldogs stuck to the game plan and got their third win of the season at Lunenburg with a 27-7 victory over the 0-3 Chargers. The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and played the ground game with good results, but came up short on a fourth down deep in Charger territory. On their ensuing drive, John King found the Chargers end zone with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. King added a second score on a seven-yard run shortly before halftime. The extra point failed and the Bulldogs led 13-0 as the quarter ended. Midway through the third period, the Bulldogs moved in to Chargers territory but came up short on fourth down and turned the ball over to the Chargers. The defense forced a three-andout and Quincy Snead ripped a 30yard run to make the score 19-0. Quarterback Devin McCray connected with Ricky Mayfield on the two-point conversion and as the fourth quarter began, the Bulldogs enjoyed a 21-0 lead. McCray connected with Dallas Holmes for a 40-yard touchdown pass in the final period to complete the scoring and supply the Bulldogs

Volleyball continued from >13 and an ace by the Bulldogs brought Goochland back to a tied set at 13. Wiggins scored the next two Goochland points to keep the Bulldogs at a tied score with the Green Dragons. Then, Wiggins, Goff, Mary King and Gerdes combined to score four points to put the Bulldogs ahead by three points, a lead that they would not give up the rest of the second set.

with their third win of the season 27-7. Jasper Carter recorded his third 100-plus yard game of the season, and John King added 50 yards. “They had films of our last two games and they saw that Jasper had been incredibly successful for us on the inside for us, so they set their defense to stop him,” Coach Joe Fowler said after the game. “That opened up some things on the outside for our other backs. Jasper was still a force for us, but some other guys like John King and Perry SneadJohnson were able to find some seams to run through,” the coach said. Fowler said Central provided a tough test for the Bulldogs, and he noted his team’s commitment to staying with the game plan. “Lunenburg is always a tough place to go play. They play a physical style of ball that just wears you down,” Fowler said. “We are very proud of the way our kids kept battling tonight and sticking to the plan. Eventually our depth wore them down a little bit.” Goochland was stymied with penalties at key times in the game, and Fowler said that aspect of the game that can kill momentum. “The penalties were incredibly frustrating. We will need to go back and take a close look at the film. It seemed like every time we got going there would be a

yellow flag on the ground.” The Bulldogs defense remained stingy through out the game, and Chargers running back Derrick Crowder didn’t crack the end zone until late in the game. “Our defense played lights out all night long,” Fowler said. “They have two good running backs and for the most part we were able to keep them in check. Ricky Mayfield and Jamal Carter have played against them in the past and they had a good feel for the offense and did a great job up front.” King is making his mark as a blocking back, and Carter’s success can be largely contributed to his and other’s lead blocks, so Fowler was glad to see the senior get in the end zone, twice. “John was able to get in the end zone a couple of times, but he is our best blocking running back,” Fowler said. “ He is incredibly physical when he leads inside for Jasper or when he is outside blocking in space for our other halfbacks.” McCray had another solid outing competing four of seven passes with one touchdown. “Devin is a cool customer who continues to get better. We still need to get a lot better in the passing game, but we are getting better each week.” The Bulldogs take on Nottoway this week and Fowler respects the

Maggie Walker took the lead to begin the third set, but the lead quickly went away as Goochland scored three consecutive points, two of which were aces by Rachel Carter. While the Green Dragons fought throughout the set and kept the Bulldogs honest, they would not get any closer than two points to the Bulldogs lead. Wiggins scored three of the final five Goochland points as the set went 25-20 again and the match to the Bulldogs. “She stays focused, driven and

she hates losing,” Erixon wrote of Wiggins. “(Losing) just isn’t an option for her. She really likes a challenge, so when the team needs her to step up, she does.” Despite the win, Erixon wrote that the Bulldogs didn’t play to the level they’re accustomed to. “I’m happy that we won,” Erixon wrote. “However, we just didn’t play to our potential for the match. It was frustrating to watch, but I’m glad the girls kept it together enough to still come out with the win.” Playing a tough opponent such as

Cougars ability to present challenges. “Nottoway will be a physical and athletic team.” The coach is looking for more offensive production, with fewer mistakes. “We took a step back this week

offensively. We had way too many penalties and we will work to correct those this week. Our offensive line did not do a great job and they need to improve or we are going to give some other kids a chance in those spots.”

Maggie Walker is a good test for the Bulldogs at this point in the season. “We need to have tough competition,” Erixon wrote. “It’s what shows the girls how they need to play all the time. It not only makes their physical play better, but it helps build them mentally as well. It also makes the girls work on their communication skills and teamwork. It’s also nice for them to have a reality check that we always have room for improvement.” Erixon wrote that the win over Maggie Walker was a strong mental

battle for her team. “It helped them gain some strength in that aspect,” she wrote. “I’m hoping that we will go out on the court for each of the remainder of our matches focused, driven and ready to compete.” Goochland hosted Cumberland on Sept. 12 and traveled to Bluestone on Sept. 14 before hosting Collegiate on Sept. 18 and Randolph-Henry on Sept. 19.
