Ferguson will be new chief of fire-rescue

Now hear this: Both sides to have input on noise solution

After a months-long search for the county’s new Chief of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services, Goochland County Administrator John Budesky announced on Monday that a very familiar face would be filling the position. Eddie Ferguson, who has been serving as the county’s Interim FireRescue Chief since the resignation of former Chief William MacKay, will officially begin his tenure on FERGUSON Aug. 1. Ferguson was one of 35 candidates interviewed for the position, Budesky said, but it soon became obvious that he already had the support of the local community. “I’ve never received so many letters of support for a candidate,” Budesky joked Monday morning, announcing Ferguson’s hire at

While the ongoing debate continues surrounding the regulation of noise in Goochland County—what counts as “noise” and who gets to say how much is too much—county supervisors recently agreed that a path forward will require carefully considering all points of view. During the regular monthly supervisors meeting on July 2, board members unanimously decided to move forward on the creation of a citizen committee to examine the issue and offer feedback that could be used to create a formal noise ordinance. As County Attorney Tara McGee explained to the board, the county had taken a similar action in 2010, but the board had declined to approve the ordinance that was brought forth. In that instance, McGee explained, the plan was created largely by those who felt they had been negatively impacted by noise and was subsequently

Seven injured in chain-reaction Interstate crash in Goochland Twisted metal and scattered debris covered a stretch of Interstate 64 in Goochland for hours on July 23, as crews worked to clean up after three separate yet nearly simultaneous crashes at the 164 mile marker. According to Sgt. Keeli Hill with the Virginia State Police, just before 10 a.m. that morning troopers responded to the series of crashes that began when the driver of a Nissan Altima traveling eastbound on I-64 lost control and hit the guardrail, spinning around to face the opposite direction of

travel in the right lane. Immediately following that incident, a Chevrolet Malibu traveling eastbound struck the Nissan. Three people involved in the collision between the Nissan and the Malibu were transported to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries, but there was still more chaos to come. As traffic was slowing to a stop as a result of the two previous crashes, a 2007 International tractor hauling a container unit traveling eastbound struck a Toyota

Highlander in the rear as it was coming to a stop. The tractor then struck a 2007 Freightliner flat bed tractor, forcing it to jack knife and strike two additional tractor trailers. It is believed all involved with the third crash were wearing seat belts, and four people were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor to serious injuries. The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Safety Team. — Roslyn Ryan

with a list of residents who might be willing to serve on the committee, as well as a suggested time frame for the work to be completed. The noise issue has been a hot topic as of late in Goochland, with residents using the public comment period during supervisors meetings to share how noisy neighbors — including those who allow dogs to bark constantly, or ride ATVs near property boundaries — have made their lives miserable. The county recently held a listening session to gather public feedback on the issue, and the response, according to County Administrator John Budesky, left little doubt how many residents feel.

While Goochland does not have a noise ordinance in place, many neighboring localities—including Hanover, Chesterfield and Powhatan— do have them. Louisa’s ordinance goes so far as to guard against “whistling or singing in such a manner as to permit sound to be heard across a residential real property boundary, or through partitions common to two dwelling units within a building. McGee did note during her remarks to the board that in some cases residents’ noiserelated complaints — including those about incessant gunfire or barking dogs — may already be covered under other already-existing state and local ordinances.

continued from >1 challenged by a significant number of residents who felt that it was too restrictive and could potentially be used to curtail individual property owners’ rights. This time, McGee suggested, it would be beneficial to find residents on both sides of the issue. McGee pointed to the process used to create the county’s nuisance animal ordinance in 2014 as an example of residents working successfully together to draft a plan. Board members agreed, and ultimately directed county staff to come back to them

New scouting program starts this month By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Goochland, VA 23063

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County

A new faith-based scouting program in Goochland is offering local boys a chance to take part in outdoor adventures while maintaining a focus on citizenship, character, friendship and faith. Sponsored by Ragland Memorial Baptist Church and led by Troopmaster Walt Marria, Trail Life USA will hold its first meeting on Aug. 27 and continue weekly on

Tuesday nights from 7 to 8 p.m. The program is for boys in kindergarten through fifth grade. Marria, a former Scout Master with the Boy Scouts, said Trail Life is not intended to compete with or replace membership in the Boy Scouts, and the group accepts scouts of all faiths. Ranks and badges from Boy Scouts can be transferred to Trail Life, Marria said. Marria said he decided to become involved with

the new program after talking with fellow members of Ragland Memorial, and said he has so far received interest from around eight potential scouts. Registration, which is now open, is $26 per child. For more information, visit www. TrailLifeUSA.com, e-mail troopva2019@gmail.com or call (804) 556-4500. Trail Life USA, a nonprofit organization, has troops in nearly all 50 states, with local troops operating in Powhatan and Richmond.

Goochland teen earns national ‘Good Deed’ honor The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) of Goochland recently announced that Junior Auxiliary member Emma Elrod has received the National Auxiliary Good Deed Award. This award, developed to recognize those who make a positive difference for a worthy cause, is in recognition of Elrod’s work for deployed troops. Her project, Operation Gratitude, filled and mailed 45 care packages to troops deployed overseas. She was also recognized by Rear Admiral Reyes with a Letter of Appreciation for this project. Elrod, a rising 8th grader in Goochland Middle School, is a member of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps AMERICA Division. Crusade for clarity is always a worthwhile battle By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As I have learned over the years, some crusades are quieter than others. Take, for example, the recent

efforts of Goochland’s District 5 supervisor Ken Peterson to have the county’s monthly reports from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) presented in a more user-friendly format. As Peterson noted in two

Dear Editor, On July 20, 2019, I received a phone call that in the past, I would have been the one initiating. Upon looking at the number that was displayed, my heartbeat began to race. I answered the call and the voice identified himself as someone I had previously met during a dinner at a Washington D.C. firehouse on Capitol Hill. I knew he worked with my son. The supervisor told me that my son (Levin) was OK, but he was transported to MedStar Washington Hospital as result of a 7th floor apartment fire that his guys responded to. He then proceeded to tell me that “Levin” was being intubated for smoke inhalation, extreme heat and possible airway burns for evaluation and that perhaps I should respond. He knew I would respond and he knew it was serious but, he also knew to keep the parent (me) calm. I told him I would be in D.C. in about an hour or little more. He was shocked, yet not surprised, when I called him 75 minutes later requesting directions from downtown D.C. When I arrived, I was met by a large contingent of D.C. Firefighters. Fast forward ahead: three days later, the steady flow of firefighters around the clock did not stop. As standard procedure, (Levin) was never left alone by a D.C. Firefighter during his entire time in the ICU, Burn Unit of three days. So, my purpose in writing this letter is to say thank you to the 1000 plus people who contacted me through text, email, phone calls and social media platforms. “Levin” whom I call “L.J.” and is known as “Gooch” by his fellow D.C. Firefighter family, did not only see support from his D.C. see Letters > page 7

Letters continued from >6 Fire family but Albemarle County, Louisa County and Goochland County as well. I could write pages of accolades that is deserving of the D.C. Firefighters and D.C. Firefighters Burn Foundation but will keep this letter focused on folks in our community. For your readers who do not know the history of where the story began for “Gooch,” they should know that it started right here in Goochland County when he turned 16 more than 11 years ago. He had great mentors in Mike Jarrel, Steve and Barbara Young and many others. “Gooch” earned his certifications as a firefighter and was a volunteer in Crozier/ Goochland County for several years before starting his professional career in Albemarle County. This gentle reminder/ flashback came over me when I was sitting beside my son in the ICU, Burn Unit with an inability to speak due to the tubes down his throat. I received multiple text messages from Goochland Deputy Fire Chiefs Eddie Ferguson and Chris Brooks. To have these men reach out to me to offer their help to feed and water my son’s dogs and offer to provide transportation from D.C. to his home from the hospital reflects

the true heart of the members within the Goochland County Fire/EMS leadership. I know that I left so many other acts of kindness and support out of this letter but, from our family to all of Goochland and other friends and family, here is a huge “Thank You” for all of your support and prayers. I am proud to say that although I have lived in Goochland for only 17 years, we are still Goochlanders! Welcome home “Gooch.” Levin White Sr. Crozier

Creasey’s service to Goochland earns him couple’s vote

positive things we have witnessed Steven exhibit in serving the people of Goochland. The stories are many of the help Steven has provided to those in need, many of which did not fall within the category of his duties. Steven’s qualifications go beyond his fine education in law enforcement and practical experience, but also speak to his intimate knowledge of Goochland and its people. The Creasey family has been steeped in service to Goochland County in so many ways, it’s hard to mention all! Just a few that come to mind where members of his family have served are Fire and Rescue, Law Enforcement, County Administration, Board of Supervisors and being good neighbors. We are planning to vote Steven Creasey in November as we believe he is the best person for the job and will serve our citizens well.

To the Editor, I am sorry to see the Sheriff’s race is going the way much of the politics in our country is headed. The lack of civility has surfaced recently among Hal and Shirley Ragland the candidates for Goochland Maidens County Sheriff. My belief is the people of Goochland County deserve better and expect to receive factual information Candidate’s rank is expressed in a civil way with- not what determines out unfounded statements and his leadership ability bitterness! Dear Editor: We would like to use In recent weeks there have this space to support Steven Creasey based on his many been several letters concerning years of experience and the the Sheriff s race in Goochland.

Interestingly almost all of them expound on why one of the candidates should not be considered for the position. Few give any valid reasons on why either of the other two candidates is a better choice in their opinion. The phrase of choice seems to be “We need new blood in the county.”. Do we really? Is Goochland running rampant with corruption, crime and gangs like the localities the other candidates worked in? Has our county’s current police force done a poor job of dealing with, and keeping criminal activity out of Goochland? Is there a problem with the “chain of command”? I think not, the facts speak for themselves. A review of the candidates’ web sites and other information available on the web gives a clearer picture and comparison of the candidates’ qualifications, their values and what they perceive the needs of Goochland County and its citizens are. What follows are a few items I would urge you to consider as you decide who you will support and cast your vote for. Sgt. Creasey is the only candidate for sheriff who has worked in the Sheriff s office and is actively serving as a sworn law enforcement officer. He has been serving in the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office for over 24 years, and is familiar not only with the

Want more? Visit us on the web at

www.goochlandgazette.com internal workings of the sheriff’s office, but also has an excellent rapport with and is respected within all the county’s departments and neighboring counties’ agencies. He has committed over half of his life to actively serving our community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT with Goochland Fire-Rescue. The position of Sergeant is one with immense responsibilities in a small agency such as Goochland. Yes, he’s been a Sergeant for over ten years and other candidates consider this as a negative or a shortcoming; yes, he could have left for other opportunities, but he remained committed to his position and to the citizens of Goochland County, his home. Goochland has a fairly small police force, unlike Richmond and Petersburg. Opportunities for advancement are limited due to the size of the department and typically result from retirement or employees leav-

ing. Goochland has one Chief Deputy, one Patrol Lieutenant and the remaining patrol force is comprised of deputies, corporals and sergeants. Those who would place a person’s current title above their abilities for evaluation purposes are not what Goochland needs to be our next Sheriff. They also disregard the significant cost of adding substations and expanding the department to the levels they claim they will. Precious Valuables of the Poor

Matthew 5:3 - “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” All people need the Lord but not all realize it and admit it. Some do. The poverty Jesus speaks of is a deep sense of spiritual bankruptcy. This starting point opens the door to allowing God to reign and rule over us by His loving will.

Have you considered your need of Him?

Clarity continued from >6 attempting to obfuscate the facts or engage in any other such funny business, Peterson also made it clear that using bewildering descriptors didn’t exactly, in his viewpoint, serve the public good. As someone who has had to sift through more than a few data-driven reports that are heavy on jargon and the kind of “inside baseball”

minutiae that can be positively mind-numbing after even a few pages, it was refreshing to see Peterson’s polite but determined efforts to bring clarity. Truth be told, I thought of this the other day while trying to sort out a pile of medical bills after a family member’s recent surgery. The procedure had been a relatively minor one, but it had nevertheless triggered a veritable avalanche of bills and benefits explanations that were so dense with terms

I didn’t know that I finally picked up the phone and called the number listed at the top of one statement. A half hour later I had begun to get to the bottom of it, making careful notes in the margins and repeatedly asking the poor woman on the other end of the line to explain each thing “as if I were an idiot.” Still, it left me feeling exhausted and also sorry for those without the time or the energy to make sure that they

understand the hundreds of various bills, user agreements and contracts they will be presented with over the course of their lifetimes. “It’s a lack of clarity that creates chaos and frustration,” said the noted author and speaker Steve Maraboli, “and those emotions are poison to any living goal.” Precision, brevity and simplicity may be rare these days, but they are so important. That’s why I say fight on, Mr. Peterson, and thank you.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

August 1, 2019

Chief continued from >1 Goochland’s Company 5 firehouse in front of dozens of local first responders. A more formal swearing in ceremony for Ferguson will be held in the coming weeks, Budesky said. Ferguson’s 37 years in the Fire-EMS field began as a volunteer in Goochland County at age 16. He served for almost 17 years as a career Firefighter Paramedic with Chesterfield Fire-EMS. He also has served as a Flight Paramedic assigned to VA State Police Med-Flight 1, as an ALS Field Training Officer.

Correspondence continued from >7 vate sector since then. The other candidate has big city Richmond and Petersburg Police Department experience. His web site lists a retired Petersburg Police Chief with an “endorsement” statement. Information available shows this individual was terminated from his position as Petersburg Chief of Police under circumstances concerning allegations of corruption and missing

He is also a Fire- EMS educator, having served with the VA Department of Fire Programs, the Office of Emergency Medical Services, VCU Center for Trauma & Critical Care Education, Chesterfield FireEMS, and other firms teaching fire, EMS, and Hazardous Material Programs across the Commonwealth. Ferguson was originally hired by Goochland on June 28, 2004 as Deputy Chief. “I am very pleased to promote Mr. Ferguson into this role,” Budesky said Monday. “Eddie’s significant experience and skills put him in an optimal position to lead this combination department and to advise County Administration and the Board on a multitude

of issues now and into the future.” To Ferguson, the new role will offer both a chance to serve his community and to realize what he described as a lifelong dream. “I knew as a young child that public safety was my calling, particularly Fire and Rescue, and to one day serve as the Fire-Rescue Chief,” Ferguson said. “I can assure you that I’ll be as dedicated and committed as I have been in the past, while leading the organization forward to meet the present and future demands and challenges. I’m invested in the organization and want nothing more than what is best for our continued success.”

funds from the city’s police evidence room. A recent letter to the editor describes the candidate as a good leader for a “paramilitary public safety organization.” Read the definition, I personally don’t think that Goochland needs a more “militaristic police force.” I prefer to think of Goochland Police/EMS & Fire and safety as being collaborative well-run separate organizations who do an excellent job of serving all citizens of the county.

Given the facts above, readers would be well advised to further research the backgrounds of all candidates and see for themselves just who really is the best choice and most qualified to serve Goochland’s citizens as the next Sheriff. I would suggest that Sgt. Creasey is exactly who Goochland needs as Sheriff to insure an efficient and safe future for all citizens. R.E. Bridges Maidens

Five decades later, memories of Woodstock concert still bring joy By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

It’s difficult to believe it’s been 50 years since nearly a half million people gathered for three days of peace, love and music in a small village in upstate New York. What we now call Woodstock was first billed as An Aquarian Exposition: Three days of Peace and Music, and was truly the concert that almost didn’t happen. The event was organized by four promoters who faced enormous challenges planning on a concert they thought would make millions. When it was over, they

Many of us felt like the event confirmed that people could gather in an idealistic effort to promote peace and unity. were close to bankruptcy. At first glance, it all seemed possible and more than 160,000 tickets were sold in advance at $18 a pop. Officials expected no more than 200,000 to show up for the event. Town officials were promised that no more than 50,000 people would attend. Organizers finally rented land from a local dairy farmer, Max Yasgur, for $10,000, and what at first appeared to be a second rate lineup of bands began to expand. Organizers credit the booking of Creedence Clearwater Revival as the

turning point in the planning process. Once the popular rockers were booked, other bands signed on and the event that changed rock ’n’ roll history was becoming a reality. Kids began showing up on Wednesday before the concert, and any thoughts of a well-planned event exited with the influx. Organizers made strategic decisions those final days that would shape the scope of what had become a happening. Trying to juggle dwindling funds for planning, they opted to build the stage versus erecting a fence around the event. Those with and without tickets poured onto the farm, and organizers quickly declared it was a free concert . . . And the rest is history. The last performer to take the stage was Jimi Hendrix. With the mixture of rain delays and bad organization, it was 8:30 a.m. on Monday when the Voodoo Child belted out his iconic version of the Star Spangled Banner. And those who tell you of the untold number of rapes and deaths that occurred during the festival just don’t have the facts. There were two deaths recorded, two births and a number of minor injuries. And, that’s what we as a generation took away from a festival that grew in popularity once the movie “Woodstock” so beautifully captured the spirit of the festival. Many of us felt like the event confirmed that social harmony was possible and people could gather in an idealistic effort to promote peace and unity. That brings us to an event scheduled this year to promote the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. It seems this

event also is enduring its share of pre-planning nightmares with several locations in New York opting out of the process, and rapper Jay-Z recently announcing he won’t be performing at the event. Organizers say they have now acquired a site in Maryland for the event, but, with less than two months remaining, it seems more likely that Woodstock II is more of a dream than a reality. And, that’s OK with me. Let’s face it, most remakes are grossly inferior to the original, and capturing that spirit, confusion and unpredictability that made Woodstock a momentous occasion is impossible. Maybe we should just remember this piece of Americana just the way it was: complete with mud, overflowing toilets and other inconveniences. In 1971, I visited the small town near Yasgur’s farm on a trip to Canada. It was quiet and peaceful, and reminded me of a Saturday Evening Post cover, almost storybook in its idyllic setting. I stopped for gas at a small service station and noticed a man across the street mowing his lawn. As I exited, I stopped my car and waved at the man as he finished up his lawn. “Were you here for Woodstock?” I asked him. “I sure was,” he yelled back. “A kid went to the bathroom (my words, his were more specific) right in my front yard.” I pulled away slowly. I suppose the memories are not as pleasant for some of those who endured the three days of peace and love — and nowhere to go to the bathroom.

On a roll Goochland resident’s business is finding success with combo of great food and family support By Roslyn Ryan Editor

J

ust like crafting a perfect dish, starting a successful business often involves following a recipe of sorts. So when Hadensville resident Linwood Cowan decided in 2018 to become the fulltime owner-operator of his own food truck, SandTopia, he knew he needed to put things in the right order. Cowan was already a pro in the kitchen — a lifelong passion for cooking would lead him to obtain a degree from Johnson and Wales University’s Charleston, South Carolina campus in 1993—but he knew he still had plenty to learn when it came to operating what is essentially a fullyequipped commercial kitchen on wheels. With this in mind, Cowan began seeking out as much information as he could and talking to local food truck owners around Richmond about their own experiences. He immersed himself in learning the ins and outs of the business and eventually found himself a truck, giving it a shiny black paint job an emblazoning it with his company’s new logo. These days, Cowan can be found serving up his menu of fresh-made sandwiches all over the Richmond area, with local stops including Rockville’s Midnight Brewing and Lickinghole Creek Craft

Brewery in central Goochland. While Cowan isn’t one to toot his own horn too much, his legions of happy customers seem to have no problem doing it for him: not only are his reviews excellent, but this year SandTopia also earned second place in Style Weekly’s poll of best local food trucks. While the dream was his, Cowan is the first to say that keeping the truck running smoothly is most definitely a team effort. Often by his side as he cooks are his wife Melissa and his daughter Lamya, 16, who has already proven herself a savvy social media manager for the business. His younger daughter, 12 year old Maleah, has been known to get in on the act as well, said Cowan, explaining that building something he can share with his family has made the journey all that much sweeter. Cowan said he has also benefitted along the way from others’ willingness to help when he needed it, from offering advice on how to prepare for events to telling him where to take his truck for repairs. Cowan also credits Penny Grant, whom he met through his church and eventually brought on to help run the truck when he couldn’t be there, as a key factor in his success thus far. Of course, like any other endeavor, running a small business is not always smooth sailing. Cowan says his learning curve in the beginning included figuring out which

Selling food is also a notoriously challenging business from a finance standpoint, and cost control is critical. Staying organized and mindful can often mean the difference between an operation that makes money and one that doesn’t, Cowan said. Despite the challenges, Cowan says he feels blessed

h b bl to realize li to have been able his dream. His advice to anyone looking to start their own food truck is to look hard at the numbers, but also pay attention to the intangibles. After all, he explained, one of the most critical components of a strong food business may be the one that isn’t even found on a menu. To really succeed, said Cowan, “You’ve got to be a people person.”

Goochland swimmers win at CHAMPS meet Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor

MIDLOTHIAN – When she dove into the water in the closing leg of the varsity-level 9-to-10-year-old 200 yard freestyle mixed relay, Andrea Rogerson was trailing the leading relay team. But as she had proven with her winning time a few events before in the 100 freestyle, she had the speed and the focus to give the leaders a fierce challenge in the final 50 yards. As she made the turn off the 25-yard mark and tore through the water in lane 6 for the final time that afternoon, she reeled in the leader. The blocks loomed ahead. Neck-and-neck, the swimmers touched the wall. Rogerson did so eight hundredths of a second faster. As she looked up at the results screen positioned above the competition pool at SwimRVA, the frozen times confirmed it. She and her fellow Goochland YMCA swimmers Camden Wilson, Ryan Johnson and Nathaniel Harris had won the event on a final time of 2:15.37 – just a hair ahead of Canterbury’s 2:15.45. The thrilling triumph helped cap a successful first day for the Manta Rays in the two-day Greater Richmond Aquatic League Champs meet. Goochland’s 12-and-younger swimmers helped their team take the top spot in Division 4 and finish 10th best overall. For Goochland YMCA head coach Helen Brown, winning’s a bonus, but the main goal always is to have the Manta Rays improve their times. Several swimmers did just that. The winning varsity relay team of Rogerson, Johnson, Wilson and Harris swam over five seconds faster than their seed time of 2:20.81. Brown was excited about the swimmers’ starts, turns and finishes. “I just thought overall our team did better on the fine-tuned parts,” she said. Rogerson’s result in the relay put the exclamation mark on a good day individually for the young swimmer as she also won the senior varsity (SV) 50 yard butterfly (32.86) and sparingly

turned her head out of the water for air while dominating the SV 100 yard freestyle on a blistering time of 1:07.28. Both of her swims were improvements over her seed times. She also swam second in the SV 50 yard freestyle on a 30.13 and third in the SV 100 yard individual medley (IM) on a 1:16.50. Ethan Salser shined in the boys’ 11-12 events. Competing in the 100 yard IM, he swam neck-and-neck for the lead all the way up to the breaststroke stretch; but he got the lead in that segment before turning off the wall and into the freestyle, through which he turned on the jets to sail to a clear victory at the SV level and beat

his seed time with a swim of 1:06.66. He continued to dominate with the freestyle as he won the SV 100-yard event on a 58.74. He also swam second in both the SV 50 backstroke (30.76) and the SV 50 butterfly (28.68). Brown praised Johnson on an “amazing swim.” Competing in the 9-10 events, Johnson put himself in the mix for the lead in the 50 yard breaststroke with a start that saw him stay underwater for roughly half of the opening 25-yard stretch and helped him earn a fourth-place finish (43.99). He was also second in both the SV 50 freestyle (30.39) and the SV 50 butterfly (36.38) and third in the SV 100

IM (1:12.94). Also at the SV level, Annika Rogerson swam second in the girls’ 11-12 50 butterfly (30.51) and third in the 100 IM (1:11.64) and Callie Horst placed third in the girls’ 11-12 50 backstroke (32.58) and fifth in the 50 butterfly (32.84) Sasha Babic was first at the varsity level in the boys’ 11-12 50 yard breaststroke (38.12) and Annika took first in varsity in the girls’ 11-12 100 freestyle (1:02.13) with the third best event time overall. She improved on her seed time by nearly four seconds. The full results can be viewed at http://gralva.com/wp-content/

More to come Results and photos from Day 2 of the GRAL CHAMPS swim meet will be featured in the Aug. 8, 2019 print edition of the Goochland Gazette! Also at the varsity level, Annika was second in the girls’ 11-12 50 freestyle (28.60), Alex Horst was fourth in the boys’ 9-10 100 IM (1:26.72) and fifth in the 50 backstroke (39.19), and Callie Horst swam fourth in the girls’ 11-12 100 freestyle (1:05.38) and fifth in the 100 IM (1:13.47).

Legion Post 201 Juniors battle to district final Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor

When the American Legion Post 201 Juniors reached the program’s firstever district championship game, head coach Ott Mullins was a little bit worried that they were going to go out to Spotsylvania and just be satisfied with being runners-up. That wasn’t the case. “Our guys really came out there and came out ready to play,” Mullins said. Right off the bat, the Braves, who reached the final while playing in their first-ever district tournament, showcased their calling card throughout this past week’s tourney by jumping out to a 4-0 lead over hosting Post 320. Their hot hitters – Brandon Lyman, Andrew Cheatham and Kendrick Sheffield – stayed hot, and after Post 320 chipped back to tie the contest after four frames, the Braves in the top of the fifth led briefly behind plays at the plate from Cheatham and Andrew Shifflett. But Post 320 unleashed four runs in the bottom of the frame and tacked on two more in the sixth to ensure a 10-6 championship victory and a trip to the state final. With the loss, the Post 201 Juniors concluded their season as district tournament runners-up. To the coaches, their season was a success. “I think we had a really good season,” said Mullins, who for the past three years has been coaching the Juniors team with his son Nathan Mullins. “A lot of those guys really came into their own I think during the course of the season and we’re still proud

of them. “We’re just happy that we could get out there with the team and compete.” In the district final, Lyman, Shifflett, Cheatham and Sheffield all batted 2-for3. Lyman hit a double and scored twice; Cheatham and Sheffield each hit two doubles apiece with Sheffield plating three runs and Cheatham knocking in two while also scoring a run. Shifflett added an RBI and a run. Ben Allanson had a hit and scored three runs. In Thursday’s 12-2 win over Post 125, which helped the Post 201 Juniors reach the final, Goochland’s Billy Thackston earned the complete-game pitching win in the run-rule-shortened fiveinning contest, striking out three and limiting opposing batters to four hits, four walks and one earned run.

Are you prepared for a disaster? If not, now’s your chance. Goochland County is pleased to announce the participation along with nearby localities in providing the PlanSafe Disaster Preparedness Workshop (formerly known as Survivor Day) as an opportunity for citizens to become better prepared for emergency and disaster situations at no cost to participants. It will include the Fire Safety House, Goochland

Sheriff’s Office Child ID, “Make Your Own Go Bag” station and “My Family Communication/Plan/Tools” station. Each child will be able to take home their own Go Bag. Each family completing the workshop will receive one free Plan Safe Kit Preparedness Backpack for their household. family.
