Caleb Worley limbers up his Glo Stick as he and his dad John wait for the fireworks to begin Monday night. Strong thunderstorms and heavy downpours passed through the county, causing a half-hour delay in the celebration.

Fireworks zoom in Goochland despite downpour By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

Fireworks around the area were canceled or postponed Monday evening, as powerful thunderstorms passed through the area. But Goochland’s display of patriotic lights went on as planned, with only a 30-minute delay due to the rain. Parks and Recreation Director Derek Stamey

said if they had had to cancel the show it would have been rescheduled for Tuesday night but luckily that was not necessary. “We had to meet with our fireworks vendor to determine what was needed to get ready for launch,” said Stamey. “Once we did that we determined we had to push it back 30 minutes.” Stamey said that news was sent out on the county web site, Facebook and by text messages. It must have worked.

Although some folks came early, anticipating the 9 p.m. start, the bulk of spectators began trickling in just after 9. One family that showed up early was the Worleys. John and Sara brought their son Caleb, 7, who came prepared with his Super Jumbo Glo Stick to add to the festival nature of the event. As the crowd waited, many huddling under

umbrellas in a slow, steady drizzle, others played pick up baseball and football games as they waited. Almost on the dot at 9:30 the lights dimmed and the sound and fury began, with about a 20-minute fireworks show. As the show progressed, the rain slowed until at the end umbrellas were no longer needed. Recreation Manager Michelle Swalin said Monday attendance was about 6,000.

Goochland fall election lineup shaping up By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

Goochlanders will have a better idea of who they may cast their ballots for this fall by the end of August. The fall election includes the Goochland Board of Supervisors, the Goochland School Board, Constitutional Officers and the county’s representatives in the General Assembly. Although a number of candidates for school board and the board of supervisors have declared, the lineup remains to be nailed down. The Goochland GOP will take steps to clarify the situation on their side with a mass meeting July 27 at 7 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Goochland Courthouse, where they will nominate candidates for supervisor in districts 2, 3 and 4 as well as candidates for Sheriff, Treasurer, Commonwealth’s Attorney and Commissioner of the Revenue. The party may also endorse candidates for the Goochland School Board at the mass meeting, said Goochland Republican Committee Chair Ben Slone. In districts 1 and 5, where two hopefuls have filed for the GOP nomination party, canvasses will be held August 2 to determine the nominee for board of supervisors. In District 1, Phil “P.C.” Hunnel and Susan Lascolette are seeking the Republican nomination. In District 5, Courtney Hyers and Ken Peterson are vying for the GOP nod. The District 1 canvass will be held at the Company 4 Fife Fire and Rescue Station at 2397 Hadensville Fife Road from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The District 5 canvass will be held during the same hours at Dover Baptist Church, 635 Manakin Road. The only choice on the August 23 primary in Goochland will be for the

Republican candidate for the newly created 22nd State Senate District, where five candidates have filed. Brian Bates, Longwood University Professor and member of the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors, Louisa County Commonwealth’s Attorney Thomas Garret Jr., Lynchburg Republican City Committee Chairman Marke J. Peake, Richmond City Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney and Goochland resident Bryan Michael Rhode and Chairwoman of the Amherst Board of Supervisors Claudia Tucker will be on the ballot. Former Lynchburg Vice-Mayor Bert Dodson is the only Democrat to declare in the 22nd district. Slone said he had favored a convention to choose the GOP nominee in the 22nd district. “When you run a primary it costs the taxpayer money,” said Slone. Goochland

Registrar Frances Ragland estimated the county will spend $16,000 on the Aug. 23 primary. Slone said although this year is a “classic off-year election” he expects higher voter turnout than expected at the August primary, and in November. The November voting is potentially “a watershed election,” said Slone. “We started nurturing candidates four years ago,” he said of potential GOP supervisors and school board candidates. In the House of Delegates, redistricting split Goochland between the 65th District represented by Republican Lee Ware and the 56th District represented by Republican Bill Janis. Neither is expected to face Democratic opposition for reelection this fall, said current Goochland Democratic Committee Chair Alan Tucker last week.

The Center for Rural Culture and the Goochland Chamber of Commerce teamed up for Business after Hours last week, drawing a

crowd of visitors to Nadolski’s Butcher Shop in Goochland Courthouse. Food was provided by vendors from the Local Roots Food Co-op and there was a wine tasting too. About 45 people attend-

Goochland Chamber of Commerce Director Bonnie Creasy said the CRC contacted them and they decided to jointly sponsor the event. “They called and asked if see Business > page 5

Library hours extended By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

An anonymous donor’s gift to the Pamunkey Regional Library has made it possible for the Goochland library to return to a 60-hour weekly schedule. New hours starting July 5 were posted on the front door recently. “We’re very really happy that we’ll be open the full 60 hours we were previously,” said Goochland Branch Manager Janet Melton. “All our hourly staff had taken cuts,” she added, as a result of budget tightening at the county level. The library had been closed entirely on Tuesday. Now the new hours will be Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Melton said the new schedule means 55 hours of work added to the hourly staff schedule. The $31,500 gift will fund the additional hours for the entire fiscal year 2012, said Pamunkey Regional Library Director Tom Shepley.

Save the Date The library is open on Tuesdays again.

“We were cut 10 percent in FY2011 and 2 percent in FY2012,” said Shepley, who praised the action of the donor. “It’s very generous of the donor to help the community like that,” said Shepley. “It is great news and is amazing what the anonymous gift to the library will do for the community, “ said Board of Supervisors Chairman Willaim Quarles. “I believe that this extraordinary donation is appreciated by our citizens. I wish to say “thank you” to the anonymous gift giver.”

Black bear population growing? By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com

Kenny Turner built his home in Goochland County five years ago. Since then, he and the animals that roam the woods and forest around his house have gotten along just fine, until two weeks ago. “The bears that live in this area are suddenly becoming a big problem,” Turner said by phone Wednesday. “When we were building our house, we could see them running in the fields. Recently in their search for food, they’ve become very aggressive. I guess they are cubs that the mother has more or less run away so they can find food for themselves. They haven’t really matured and don’t know any better.” Turner said that most bears when they encounter a human or something they don’t know or understand will head in the other direction. “There was a bear that started coming out of the woods and getting into our bee hives,” he said. “We had seven hives, but because of the bear, we now only have three.” The bear also started chasing Turner’s three horses. “One of the horses is 25years old and can’t take a lot of running,” Turner explained. “When he got after the horses, I had no choice but to call the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and request a permit that would allow me to kill the bear.” On Saturday, June 18 at around 7 a.m., Turner fired a single shot from a Winchester .270 from his bedroom window and killed the bear. “I wasn’t happy about doing it,” he said. “The bear was in my front yard, close to the house, and I had already run him away two times that morning. I really had no other choice.”

Bee hives destroyed by a black bear at the Turner residence. Turner eventually shot the animal after repeated attempts to keep it away from the bee hives.

“Mr. Turner called our office and explained the situation, and we issued the permit he needed to legally kill the bear,” said Conservation Police Officer Tim Dooley. “Because the bear was chasing his horses and had destroyed bee hives, he didn’t really need a permit. He could have legally killed the bear because it was endangering his animals and destroying property. “We haven’t had a lot of problems with bears in Goochland County,” Turner said. “I’ve been working in the county for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for four years and can only remember two or three other times when someone has had a problem with a bear. Usually they come out of the woods because they are hungry, and they’ll get into anything where they think they can find food.” Turner said that he and his neighbors were aware of the bears and tried to live in a manner that would not attract them.

“We’re very careful about storing our trash and when we put it out for pickup,” he said. “When a bear is hungry, anything is fair game. In our case, the bear came after our bee hives. Bird feeders and anything with seeds are also prime targets for them.” Turner said the bear population in the County is growing and is larger than officials believe. “I’ve seen a video taken last year that shows four bears running together,” he added. “I’ve been talking to some neighbors and everyone agrees there are probably more in the woods now than in past years.” David Fitzgerald also keeps bees and lives near Turner in the George’s Tavern section of Goochland County. “I’m not exactly sure how many hives I’ve got here,” he said. “I’ve got about a hundred scattered over Virginia, about 60 to 70 here. I haven’t had trouble with bears this year, but I have in the past. “The problem is once a bear

gets a taste of honey, he wants more,” he said. “A bear is just doing what a bear is supposed to do, but it can be a big loss for a bee keeper. A bear will destroy the entire hive when he goes after the honey and just the cost of the hive and bees can be around $250. By the time you figure in the cost of the honey lost, it might easily be an $800 to $900 loss for a bee keeper when a bear destroys a hive.” Fitzgerald said he thought the bear population was growing in the county, and they were going to continue to present problems for bee keepers. For Turner, his bear problems are not over. “Another bear has come out of the woods and is after our bee hives just like the other one was,” he said. “I called the game warden this morning [June 22] to request a permit, but I hope it doesn’t come to having to shoot another bear. I’ll do everything I can to run him off and keep him away. Shooting the bear would really be a last resort.”

What can one say? The Fourth of July has become so ingrained into our consciousness as a time to take off work and gather with friends and family for a family cookout, or to take a trip to the beach that we may forget how we got here. We got here because the colonists through their representatives in the Continental Congress committed what the government in Great Britain called treason. Those stubborn men had the notion that they should have some say in how the laws which governed them were made and enforced and having failed to make headway in having various onerous taxes repealed, they decided to sever their ties with England. It was rough going for awhile and had it not been for the help of England’s ancient enemy France, we might still be speaking English today! (You might be hard pressed to convince a Cockney that a Southern drawl represents the same language as his own.) But throwing off one master for another really means nothing. Once separated from the mother country by force of arms, we tried twice to create a new framework of government. The Articles of Confederation, proved too loose. The second attempt, our current constitution, proved better and was adopted, although some states refused to sign on until the all important Bill of Rights were added. Other nations have not fared so well. Take Libya. Freed from their Italian colonial masters in WWII, the country now finds itself in upheaval after decades of despotic rule by strongman Moammar Quadaffi. No

constitution, no Bill of Rights, no freedom for the citizens. If they win, things may be better, if their new government includes as ingenious a document as the U.S. Constitution and a guarantee of the citizens’ rights. But only if their elected officials adhere to the law, a question now being debated over the very topic of Libya, where the president is waging an expensive, undeclared war. The late Senator Byrd of West Virginia argued that the campaign in Iraq by the former president should have required a Congressional declaration of war. He was right. So does Libya. Congress would do well not to let this moment pass, thus cementing a precedent that further strengthens the (some would say) already inflated power of the president versus Congress. Power so gained is rarely given back freely.

The library is open! Here in Goochland library patrons will have noticed the Goochland branch of the Pamunkey Regional Library has resumed it’s former 60 hour week. Few things were so disappointing as pulling up to the library only to find an empty parking lot and locked doors. This used to be the case on Tuesdays. No more, at least for Fiscal Year 2012, thanks to the anonymous donor’s generosity. It’s a great example of civic virtue and the secret donor deserves the thanks of all for financing the restoration of full service at the library.

OPINION: Letters to the Editor 7 p.m.. On good authority, Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry and Paul Revere will not be attending‌will you? Michael M. McDermott Maidens

Our Greatest Emergency For the past 50 years, the volunteer firefighters and rescue squad members in Hadensville have responded to all types of emergencies. These responses have ranged from simply helping a neighbor with changing their smoke detector batteries, to very complex rescues involving a highly specialized set of skills and equipment. We have seen friends, family and neighbors lose everything they own to the ravages of fire, and have often shared in the pain of losing your loved ones. No matter the circumstance, we have always risen to the occasion, responding to help you in a time of need, while striving for the highest level of professionalism in all that we do. While our small group of volunteers is still committed to serve our community, we are now faced with our greatest emergency. Our membership numbers are dwindling, and as a result, your volunteer Fire-Rescue system is on the verge of collapse. Instead of being challenged by the complexities that may confront us on the scene, we are now challenged in merely being able to respond to the call of an emergency. Goochland County has attempted to cover these shortages by hiring paid providers to staff units during the week, and efforts are underway to expand the hours and days these paid providers are on duty. However, the County can only afford to employ a small group of these paid providers, and their numbers only provide for a small initial response that still requires a larger volunteer contingent to safely and effectively resolve even a minor emergency, such as a minor motor vehicle collision or

a small brush fire. The need for a strong volunteer force increases dramatically when a more complex and labor intensive emergency occurs, such as a house fire, multi-vehicle collision, or mass casualty incident. Our community is growing, with close to a 30 percent increase in Goochland’s population between 2000 and 2010. Along with that growth, the demand for fire and rescue services has also expanded, resulting in an increase in the emergency call load across the county by almost 40 percent in the past ten years. Over that same time period, though the call volume has significantly increased, the active fire and rescue membership in Hadensville has decreased by almost 35 percent. We are in a business that cannot afford to fail, because the lives and property of our families, friends, and neighbors depend upon our success. Either more members of our community need to step up and volunteer, or the County will need to hire additional paid providers. The County cannot afford such an expense, at least not anywhere close to the tax rate (.53) we have all come to appreciate in Goochland. WE NEED YOUR HELP! All it requires on your part is a commitment of your time and energy. On average, a volunteer must commit a minimum of 12 hours a week to train and be available to respond to emergencies. Our equipment is state-of-the-art, and the training provided to our members is second to none and is provided at no cost. In the course of their careers, most people will never get the type of personal satisfaction and fulfillment that comes from volunteering with their neighborhood fire department or rescue squad. In fact, there are many who have volunteered with us, including myself, who have fallen in love with the job and have made a career out of it. I started volunteering when I was 16 years old, and the fire and rescue department provided a framework and education that

Virginia 1776, Bill of Rights, XVI “Religion, or the Duty which we owe our Creator can be directed only by Reason and that it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian Forbearance, Love and Charity towards each other. All 50 state constitutions have a clause which expresses gratitude and thankfulness to God. Many reference Christianity directly. When you read documents written by those who led this nation in the beginning, they often reference Scripture. The phrase “separation of church and state is traced to a letter written by Thomas Jefferson dated January 1, 1802 (11 years after the ratification of the Constitution and first 10 Amendments in 1791). Jefferson wrote to the Danbury, Connecticut, Baptist Association, commenting on a statement Roger Williams [who established the first Baptist church in the Colonies] wrote in 1644. Williams had written there was a need for a “hedge or wall of separation between the garden of the church and the wilderness of the world. This sounds like a preacher’s plea for Christians

to not compromise with societies changing moral and ethical standards. In 1802 Jefferson wrote, “I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. Jefferson’s letter reflects the fear Americans had of the European governmental practice of persecuting those who did not practice the “state religion. When you study American history you find battles within colonies/states trying to mandate specific faith practices – Quaker in Pennsylvania, Roman Catholic in Maryland, etc. The First Amendment protects people from such laws. There is nothing in Jefferson’s statement which stops the exercise of voluntary religious practices in public functions that have government associations. An individual or government entity cannot force one to participate OR deny one from participating. Williams stresses the need for Christians to not compromise Christian morals and ethical standards. Jefferson stresses the need for protection against state or federal laws establishing a “state religion or forbidding one from practicing their faith. The First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. There are six protections within the First Amendment which are in reaction to the oppressive governments of Europe. The totalitarian practices of European monarchs, Popes, or bishops would not be see Letters > page 12

Uncle Sam was the tallest person at the Henrico County July 4 celebration. Christopher Hudert had the honor of being Uncle Sam for the event.

By Jim Fields Media General Staff Writer Henrico County sponsored a July 4 celebration at Meadow Farm Museum at Crump Park, and at least one patriotic celebrant came more than a few miles to attend. Laura Brauer was present with her family who are all Henrico residents. Laura came from Jacksonville, Fla. to attend the event and visit her family. “I’ve lived my whole life in Florida, but I just love Virginia,” she said. “Within a few hours of here you’ve got the ocean and the mountains and I love the season changes.” Brauer was trying to keep up with her younger cousins Hailey and Correy. “There’s just so much to do, I’m not sure what we’ll do next,” she said. “This is really a fun event, and I’m glad I came for it.” While almost everyone else was standing in lines to wait and have fun, Andy Crane was patrolling the grounds on his bike. Crane works for the Henrico Department of Parks and Recreation and was the safety officer for the event. “I drove my car over and brought my bike with me,” he said. “Thunderstorms are my biggest concern right now. It can rain all it wants as long as it doesn’t rain until after 5 p.m. We’re expecting between 10,000 and 12,000 people to attend, and I just hope the weather doesn’t interrupt.” Also enjoying the festivities as they sit on a hay bale was the John and Kathy Calhoun family. “We live in Henrico and wanted to come out and have

some fun and support the county,” he said. From hot air balloon rides, to being turned upside down and sideways on the gyrosphere, to train rides for the kids, there was something at the celebration for everyone, even if you just wanted to sit and listen to music. Safety officer Crane also had a good day. It didn’t rain on the Henrico’s celebration.

Contributed Report Henrico County Public Library recently received an Outstanding Achievement Award given annually by the National Association of Counties for the development of a Notable Henricoans Database in honor of Henrico County’s 400th Anniversary. Library staff did significant research to identify deceased Henrico citizens who met the criteria for inclusion in the database. Information about these local individuals was scattered throughout many documents and now has been pulled together into this database for easy access. This project will also serve as a model for online publishing of local historical information. Henrico County Public Library also received an Outstanding Public Relations Award by the Virginia Public Library Director’s Association for this Notable Henricoans Database, in addition to an Outstanding Service Innovation Award for its Workshops for Childcare Providers. Library staff conducted workshops for childcare providers to improve their knowledge and skills about using books with preschool children. These workshops have given child care providers easily accessible quality training at no cost to them. This training also has filled their need for continuing education credits, and continues to highlight the role that the public library plays in educating its community. Operation 360 shows results ContributedReport Since his appointment to the position of Chief of Police, Chief Douglas A. Middleton has made a pledge to the Division of Police and the County of Henrico community that he would dedicate the necessary resources to provide for the safety of its citizens as well as to continue to provide high standards of police services in order to positively impact quality of life issues. Recognizing that preventing crime is our job first and foremost, Chief Middleton has authorized the use of innovative methods, practices and technologies to accomplish this. “Enforcement of the law is one of the important elements of crime prevention because it serves as a deterrent to criminal behavior, and it removes those criminals from the streets who repeat their offenses if they are not apprehended,” Chief Middleton stated. “At the same time, we want to ensure that we are reaching out to the communities we serve and the law abiding citizens in a manner that represents our values as an organization

with Honor, Professionalism, Commitment, Compassion and Accountability,” Chief Middleton continued. The events of the past seven days demonstrate the commitment of the Division to its citizens. June 20 marked the commencement of Operation 360 - An All Points Crime Initiative. The operation is a concept that spearheads the Division’s transition into the use of the Intelligence-Led Policing model. “It will incorporate special projects at every compass point in the County,” said Chief Middleton. Assets and resources from every section in the Division were used to accomplish the successful initiation of Operation 360 - An All Points Crime Initiative. Members of the Division worked tirelessly to develop and execute intelligence gathering instruments and criminal enforcement plans to ensure maximum efficiency would be realized. From June 20th to June 26th, Henrico Police conducted operations in the East Highland Park area. As a result of the community - law enforcement partnership, invaluable infor-

mation was gathered and used to launch multiple successful enforcement specific initiatives. There were more than 185 arrests made; over 101 grams of cocaine seized; more than 68 grams of marijuana seized. Also seized was a handgun and evidence used to support drug distribution charges. The week concluded with members of the Division meeting with the Confederate Heights Neighborhood Watch group. Afterwards, members of the Division’s staff and members of the community participated in a ‘Neighborhood Walk.’ The Henrico County Division of Police will continue Operation 360 - An All Points Crime Initiative through the summer months. Each member of the Division has a stake in all aspects of the strategy’s success. We measure our rate of return by our ability to reinvest in our communities. “This is an all Points Initiative and every employee in the Division of Police has a role to play as we move towards a new and important aspect of fulfilling our mission as a law enforcement agency,” said Chief Middleton.

Local runner ranks among region’s best BY JIM RIDOLPHI Special Correspondent

Manuel Alvarez is turning back the hands of time, or at least, getting them to stand still. The Goochlander is among the top Virginia runners for his age group, and shows no signs of letting up as he approaches his 58th birthday. His impressive times earned him a regional ranking in the D.C. Running Report, which stated “Manuel Alvarez is the man to beat in Richmond and nobody does. His best race was the Richmond Jingle Bell 5K for Arthritis in 18:45.” Alvarez said the Running Report is a good gauge to see where you stand among other area runners. “It’s a ranking of runners who race and live

in the States of Maryland, Virginia and DC. It is based on your best 10K time during the period. It gives you an idea of where you are among runners in the same age group. For the ‘winter’ period I was ranked fifth,” Alvarez said. Alvarez has been running since age 29. “My first race was a 10K race to inaugurate Norfolk’s Waterside. I did better than I expected and was hooked. I have been running ever since,” he said. “I stopped racing for a couple of years when I lived in North Carolina, but when I moved to Goochland, I reconnected with the Richmond Roadrunners Club and have been doing a lot of races since. I am currently running about 30 miles a week.” Alvarez, who arrived in

The players on the team are Kisha Braxton, Katie Hardman, Katelin Martin, Hallie Massengale, Allison Mohar, Lynzy Mounayar, Kathleen Norman, Rachael Payne, McKenzie Reams, Maddie Riddock, Emma Roby and Cherish Sims. The coaching staff includes Josh Martin, Lucas Reams, Jeff Roby, Derek Mohar, Mitri Mounayar and the scorekeeper is Katie Martin.

The Goochland Angels All Star team won the Dixie Softball District 5 Tournament in Cumberland, VA on June 19. The team went 4-and-1 in the tournament and defeated Powhatan 10 – 6 in the title game. The tournament win was a total team effort with key contributions from all players. The coaches and parents couldn’t be prouder of what these girls have accomplished. Their next challenge is the Dixie Softball Virginia State tournament in Amherst, Virginia, which begins July 8. Submitted by Jeff Roby

America from Cuba in 1968, and his wife Grace have been married for 34 years and reside in Goochland with their rescue dog Lucy. “I guess you can say I’m pretty steady, married 34 years, working for the same company for 30 years and been running for 29,” Alvarez said. Alvarez has a passion for running, but it’s not his only focus. He also has an intense interest in politics and stays involved in local issues. To him, it’s an important part of being an American citizen. “As an immigrant, I have a great passion for this country and what it stands for. I want to keep it that way or better for future generations, so I’ve been getting more engaged in politics,” Alvarez said. “I do a lot of reading on the topic and

have been known to write a letter or two to my representatives, newspapers, you name it,” he added. That involvement has been reinforced by recent developments in local government. “Some of the issues we’ve experienced here in Goochland have highlighted the importance of staying involved in local government, so I’ve been attending school board meetings, planning meetings and BOS meetings to stay connected with local politics. I want to make sure our county government does what it needs to do to earn the respect of our citizens, but it’s going to take some time, effort and some additional changes,” Alvarez said. When he’s not working, running or staying involved

in local issues, he likes to dabble in woodworking, making birdhouses and other items. “I can’t say I’m very good at it, but I love trying” he said. “I’ve made a few useful things, but when I have nothing to do, I just make another bird house. I recently bought a lathe, so I’m now experimenting (my wife calls it playing) with that.” Alvarez plans to continue running, entering races and even winning a few more to add to his long list of victories. “My heart and brain tell me I can still run faster, but my body has the final say and

always tells the truth. I think I can do better with the right training, but I have other priorities, so ‘speed work’ rarely happens.” His schedule isn’t getting any lighter. “Once in a while I still get lucky and win a race. In fact, this year I won the inaugural Bulldog 5K at the high school and finished third at the Run for the Build 5K.” Alvarez said he intends on keeping his consistent schedule, a blend of running, family and community. “Unless I have an injury or age catches up with me, I’ll probably run forever.”

On June 11, the LSU Tigers became the GYAA Minors Baseball Champions of 2011. This team of 9-11 year olds finished their season with the best record in their league at 15-1-1. Their high powered offense scored 117 runs, had seven players bat over .300 and four players bat over .400. Every player got a hit, every player had an RBI, and they had six players pitch at least one inning. The team was led by great coaching from Mike Stewart and Haynie Hite. Congratulations to the LSU Tigers Minors Champs. Submitted by Robin Sundstrom

Soon to turn 58, Goochlander Manuel Alvarez plans to keep on running as long as his body cooperates, and why shouldn’t he. His times just keep getting better every year that he continues to run.
