Contractor Mike Johnson of MSJ Construction said he was shooting for a June completion date for the first part of the restoration, which will focus on structural components of the school building and the exterior. An historic landmark, Second Union School was a Rosenwald School, one of almost 5,000 schools built throughout the south during the days of segregation. Seed money for the schools came from Chicago

High School in Goochland before the schools were integrated. Hopkins recalled his days at Second Union School, where he started in the first grade in 1953 and attended until the school closed in 1959. Two teachers taught about 50 students in the first through seventh grades, said Hopkins, with one large room divided into two sections, with first through fourth grades on one side and fifth through seventh on the other side. “We got an outstanding education and discipline there, recalled Hopkins. Once the exterior renovation is complete, work will start on the interior, but Fleming said that work will require another $50,000 of fundraising. Membership for an annual fee of $25 in the foundation is open to those who would like to assist in the restoration of the Second Union School.
