VIRTUOSITY I’d like to dedicate this magazine to

One Hundred Lines Craft:

With all my 100 line drawing I took these necessary steps in order to draw these objects. The first step was to write my name, draw lines, draw shapes and timing all of this on paper. The reason for that being is to practice my hand eye coordination. This is essential in order to start of drawing well. The next was to do the same using the bamboo tablet and stylus and adobe illustrator instead of pencil and paper. The reason for this was to actually practice on the medium I am going to draw on. The final step to these crafts was to then pick the object I wanted to draw and draw using a brush on adobe illustrator.

Composition: With my drawings I am controlling the viewers eyes using contrast. This is made

possible by using white strokes on an all black background. Since the 100 white strokes weren’t covering a majority of the page it made the viewer look at the 100 lines forming the picture.

Concept: With this drawing I wanted to have my audience see a windex bottle, vase, lamp, and a lava lamp.

The Container Craft: With this drawing I started off with a warm up. The warm up was composed of me writing my name several

times by printing and signing it with a pencil and paper. I also had drawn different styles of lines and timed it. The last part of of my warm up was drawing shapes with out looking at the paper. After I finished that I re-did the warm up on the Macintosh computer with the Bamboo Tablet and stylus on the Adobe Illustrator Software. All of this is crucial to the drawings in order to get a feel for to start off drawing well and getting my hand-eye coordination down. The next step using Adobe Illustrator with the Bamboo equipment to make my drawings necessary was to complete a 100 line drawing on the object I decided to draw on with the brush tool. This step was necessary in order to have a shape of the object I was drawing on that allowed me to easily fix any mistakes I made throughout the whole drawing process.

The next thing that I did after I completed my 100 line drawing for each object was to shine a light on it in order to capture the object’s value. From there I had started drawing value lines starting with the darkest colors moving to the the other side of the object. As I moved across the object I changed the value of my brush to best match the value of the object I was drawing. The last steps to this was to add any touches necessary in order to get a more 3 dimensional shape using the value and to add a simple background.

Composition: This controlled the viewers eyes to see the object more is because the lines blended with the object and the object was the top layer.

Composition: With this drawing I controlled the viewer’s eye using contrast. With since a light

color was the dominate color in the drawing and the object being different shades of grey along with black and white catches the viewers eye. I wanted the viewer to see the chess piece first so what I did to control that was leaving a simple background which were some grey lines. This controlled the viewers eyes to see the object more is because the lines blended with the object and the object was the top layer.

Concept: With this drawing I composed a picture of a queen (chess piece). I drew this piece because

I was trying to give off an impression that I am interested in chess or that I am a chess player. I got a feeling of power with this drawing since it is considered the most powerful piece in the game, which is what I wanted the viewer to feel.

Purp le Spartan “...complementary drawing of a spartan’s helmet.”-Fidencio Gonzalez

Composition: With all my drawings I wanted the viewer to see the object that I drew and I did

this by centering all of the objecting in the middle. With the spartan helmet drawing I accomplished the viewer to take note of the helmet by using the extreme contrast. Yellow is the overall dominate color seen and the helmet itself is a many shades of purple. Because of purple is less than 50% of the drawing it is different; meaning that the viewer will be more attracted to the helmet due to the color of it being different.

12 Virtuosity

Concept: This is a complementary drawing of a spartan’s helmet. I drew this because I felt very strong at the time and to me this spartan helmet best represent strength. With this drawing I wanted to affect the viewer with one of two options. They could have either felt intimidated by it or strong. This was a complimentary drawing.

Breaking D own th e Purp le Spartan Craft:

There were several steps to crafting these three drawings. The first step as always is to warm up and free write/draw for a while on the a piece of paper and pencil until I felt ready to practice on the computer with Abode Illustrator using the Bamboo drawing tablet and stylus. The second step I took to make these drawings was to start the shape with a brush by using 100 line drawing concept. The next step to this was to add a value to my drawings. I did this by putting the object in a controlled light (if it was observational). By adding value I used a variety of grays from the swatches section to show the dept and volume of the object. After this step I then added color to my drawings. I first picked the color I wanted to focus on which was purple. Once I decided on my color I then created an extra layer to act as my color pallet for my drawing. This step was necessary because I needed to have easy access to my many types of purple/yellows colors. Once I created all the types of purples/ yellows that I needed I started filling in the different shades of grey with my different shades of purples/yellows. The final step to my drawings was making another layer for a background. I made sure that the background would suit the object based on the type of drawing that it was, as well as making sure the background had a variety of color to show its depth.

The Pawn Game

Craft: There were several steps to crafting thisdrawing. The first step as always is to warm up and free write/draw

for a while on the a piece of paper and pencil until I felt ready to practice on the computer with Abode Illustrator using the Bamboo drawing tablet and stylus. I first picked the color I wanted to focus on which was purlple and blue. Once I decided on my color I then created an extra layer to act as my color pallet for my drawing. This step was necessary because I needed to have easy access to my many types of purples and blues colors. Once I created all the types of purples/blues I started filling in the different shades of grey with my different shades of purples/ blues. Composition: With all my drawings I wanted the viewer to see the object that I drew and I did this

by centering all of the objecting in the middle. With thisdrawing I also used contrast to make sure the viewer sees the pawns. I made sure to use a lighter purple to fill most of the background. This like the spartan helmet will force the viewer to view the pawns since the colors contrast is so different.

Concept: With this drawing I feel that when competing head to head there will always be someone on top of the other, which is fits strongly to what I wanted to say with this drawing. I’m affecting the viewer by showing them that one pawn is standing over the other.

Concept: This drawing if you cannot already tell is a drawing of a wine bottle. With this drawing I felt calm and

relaxed, and that fact that it is purple helps the viewer feel get the same relaxing feeling.

Composition: With this letter set Craft: With this project there was a research step I gave it a standard red color on a white background. that was necessary to crafting this letter set. The website that I used to research my fonts was called whatthefont.com .This step was necessary because it allowed me to see what was already out there so I do not repeat what someone already created. Another thing that came with research was inspiration to allow me to create a letter set. I was able to see how some fonts were created and how some letters were similar to others. The next step to enter the Adobe Illustrator Software on a computer. With this project I actually used a computer mouse instead of a bamboo stylus tablet. Before I started I placed a grid on my page (command + “) to allow me to roughly measure the dimensions of each letter.

Another Tool I utilized to letter size was the ruler tool (Command + R). Once I did that I then used my pen tool to start creating shapes with points to then create a letter. If a letter needed another shape to complete the letter like A, I would then create the shape over it and go to Object, Path, and Divide object below. This made sure that the completed letter A would have only one shape. When I completed my first draft of the letter set I the went back to revise the letter set to look more symmetrical, cleaner, and similar to each other. I did so by utilizing the pen tool’s other options which were it’s pen +, Pen -, and Anchor point tool which allowed me to revise any curves and straight lines.

20 Virtuosity

The letter also had volume which makes it more noticeable to the viewer, especially since it had a ceasing color, red. the letters had more attention from the viewer due to contrast as well. Since white was the major color in the letter set page. My letter set was effective and had a unique style to it to allow the viewer to effectively read a word in this particular font. I tried to give my font a background as you can see in my second picture to support the font with it’s title.

Concept: This letter set of A-Z was to give the a font that have a style of a dagger feel. Other styles

that this font possessed was a medieval look as well as a cowboy look. With this being the case viewers could use this font to showcase a point they may have that involves daggers, medieval, or cowboys.

Community Based Learning Craft:

CBL

22 Virtuosity

Like my typography project this too required research prior to starting my logo. The reason why research was important is to inspire ideas to help me create an original logo of my own. With the research I conducted it allowed me to see which logos were effective and which ones were not, as well as to make sure I do not replicate anything. Once I completed my research I then proceeded into the Adobe Illustrator software on the computer to start my logo. With all of my logos I utilized the pen tool with the mouse. I made sure to use all of what the pen tool had to offer which included the pen +, pen -, and the anchor point tool. Once I completed my first draft I went back and continuously revised these logos until it reached to a point where they actually could be passed on as logos. Another tool that I used in Adobe Illustrator was the layers tool. This tool helped me when I wanted to focus on drawings on the background. All I had to do was hide anything in the foreground. I also took advantage of the type tool for my second logo. The reason for that being is since there was a lot already going on in the background a simple CBL in BigCaslon Medium font was enough to make the logo complete. For my first logo I took advantage of the gradient tool for my graduation cap to give it a interesting design. I used a radial option on the cap to make it look like a like is shining on top of it. For the other logos I just made sure I used solid colors to keep it simple and effective in its purpose.

Composition: With each logo I made sue that the viewer saw CBL first by placing it in front

of everything. With logo 2 and 3 I place CBL in the middle of the page. each had a subtle background which was grey so it different draw too much attention. Since the background was grey anything shown in the logo was looked at first due to the contrast. Some of my first draft logos were ineffective due to barely no contrast and color proximity, which can be seen in the bottom three pictures. With my first and third logo I used negative space to draw people doing some things but also having those people created the letters CBL and allow them to be readable. With most of my logos I keep it simple since adding to much would defeat the purpose of any logo because it has to simply get the point across in a memorable fashion. By doing this it gave the viewer a better image to look at and allow them to easily remember it.

Concept: The concept of these logos is to showcase “community based learning in three

letters and a background. There were guidelines to this drawings. The guidelines being it had to include the color red and grey, be three letters, and must look good small. The first logo I created included a graduation cap with CBL in front. The letters CBL however had drawings in them with negative space. It included a person sitting down reading a book, a person coming out of a hole playfully which shaped the B, and a person hanging by the letter L. I used this CBL in a Logo by itself as well which is shown in my third logo. The second logo that I created is composed of a book in front of a white diamond, and had the letters CBL with the BigCaslon Medium font.

Paradise Island An island in the middle of the ocean drawn with just the hands and a screen.

Composition: With Procreate it’s not only an image the viewer is going to be seeing but also a video of how I came to draw my picture which is something that will control the viewers eye. The reason being is the eye is attracted to moving objects. However with this being an image I have provided many screenshots of the actual video in the craft section on the next page. In the completed picture I made sure the viewers looked at my objects by using contrast as well as making my objects located at the center. I also made sure that my background was composed with a darker color. This contrast would make my lighter color objects stand out more. With this drawing I created. I made sure the viewer looked at the island by drawing it in the middle of the screen. I also did this by having the drawing in some sort of a frame.

Craft:

With this drawings the tools necessary to construct it was completely different from the ones I’ve made previously. With this drawing I used an Ipad rather than a computer, and instead of the adobe illustrator software I used procreate. Procreate is different in the fact that it records your drawing strokes. Within the Procreate software it had a lot of things similar to Adobe Illustrator such as the swatches and layers. Another thing that I used differently was for a brush I used my finger rather than a bamboo tablet and stylus. The craft was made possible because of the previous pieces I have done. I utilized the line drawings on my tree and whale, I used different shades of a color to bring out three dimensionality, and lastly I used color.
