BACK WHERE IT BEGAN ’11 Megan Hervey and ’11 Zack Berlat met six years ago as Gonzaga students spending a summer in Spokane. By the time classes were back in session, they were inseparable. They also worked together in Student Publications, she as editor-in-chief of Gonzaga Bulletin and he as photography editor. After graduation, they moved to Colorado, where they rode bikes and hiked the Rockies. And on an especially cold October day in 2016, they got married in front of the flatirons in Boulder, with a friend from GU’s Marketing Department (Rajah Bose) officiating. Four days later, the couple packed up and headed back to the place where it all began, as Zack took a position as staff photographer at the university. He says, “We are so happy to join the Gonzaga family again, as a married couple.”

TWICE AS NICE
In 2013, the two met at a mutual friend’s birthday party in Spokane, then were engaged in 2015 when Pulkit took Becky to India to meet his family. “Our wedding was a great experience with many traditional Indian ceremonies over three days,” says Becky. During the mehandi ceremony, the bride’s henna artwork on her arms and feet took nearly seven hours to complete.
The engagement ceremony the next day included dances performed on stage from both sides of the family, as well as the exchange of rings and cake cutting. The wedding ceremony started with a baraat – a procession where the groom sits on a horse or carriage while his family dances in the street with a band on the way to the wedding ceremony, which took place around a fire. Seven times, the bride and groom would circle the fire before officially becoming husband and wife. Becky says, “I love sharing about it. It was such a fun experience.”
