Both stylish restaurant and hot dance club, Adega is one of the Ironbound’s prime after-work and weekend destinations. The menu features shrimp sautéed in garlic; chorizo sausage flambéed tableside; seafood paella and other Spanish and Portuguese favorites. At night, things really heat up, especially on the flashing-light-radiating dance floor, especially the “dressed-tokill” clientele and “scantily-clad shooters girls.”

Probably Newark’s best Italian restaurant, this casual, greenawninged restaurant serves up good, hearty pasta and seafood in non-fussy surroundings. Save room for dessert, especially the cannoli and cheesecake. Assaggini Di Roma (A Little Taste of Rome) is a bit off the beaten track — it’s closer to Newark Liberty International Airport than to Newark Penn Station — but it’s well worth the visit.

Andros is at the heart of Ironbound and is a great community spot. It’s a great place to eat at any time, particularly because it is open 24 hours. It is a family-run place where they treat you like one of their own. The prices are all generally under $20.

At Catas, Old World Spain meets New York City as this hidden gem offers a Spanish/ Portuguese cuisine, but with a twist. Their signature dish is paella, but it is made with traditional ealasparra rice, which creates a crunchiness not typically experienced in Newark. Sampling is the norm here as they offer nearly 30 tapas as well as appetizers and entrees.

It’s a romantic, tucked-away spot whose décor mimics fine dining. You will likely need your GPS to find this one, but it’s well worth the trip. The three-pound lobster special is a must as it is consistently tasty. The prices are reasonable and the portions more than generous. Be sure to ask about the bar blackboard daily specials.

Reliable and huge portions of Spanish food are the bill of fare here. If you love the Spanish food, the Don does not disappoint. You have to enjoy a pitcher of the Sangria when you dine here. It is simply among the best fruity-boozes in the state.

This spot offers a restaurant amidst that devilish kitsch. For drinks or dinner, Hell’s Kitchen Lounge makes for a fun night out. Pajamas, knife swallowers and karaoke? You’re on your own.

No discussion of the downtown food scene is complete without a nod to this longtime Jewish deli/restaurant. There never was anyone named Hobby, although there was an owner named Hockhauser, who renamed it Hocky’s in the 1930s. Subsequent owners removed the “c” and “k,” substituted “bb,” and Hobby’s was born. Enjoy super-sized sandwiches, and all your usual Jewish deli favorites.

One of the newer additions to the city’s restaurant scene, this tapas/wine bar/lounge on the Ironbound’s main drag is a casual, hip alternative to the city’s more formal dining rooms. The brick-walled restaurant, named for Catalan composer Federico Mompou, features tapas, sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and other items. Its distinctive atmosphere and great Spanish cuisine make the storefront a standout.

There was a Tony but never a Caneca at this landmark Ironbound restaurant. Brothers Tony and Artur Almeida were the original owners; “caneca” is Portuguese for the clay jars wine was often kept in. A number of appetizers received high marks, including the shrimp in garlic sauce, and chorizo, set on fire at your table. Good red and white sangria, fresh and fruity. The formidable grilled prawns, served sizzling on a stone, were crisp and meaty. Lots of great choices.
