If we think you’ve got the most entertaining and compelling story, you could win great prizes that include a trip for two to the Hilton Golf Academy in Phoenix, AZ, Stay and Play package for two at the Best Western Plus Inn in Moscow, ID to play Circling Raven, Palouse Ridge and University of Idaho Golf Courses, or five 30-minute lessons from GolfTEC’s Certified Personal Coaches? Good Luck! Do you have a summer golf story that is worthy of mention? Perhaps you aced your local 208 yard par-3, or accidently parked your cart in the water hazard while fighting off a swarm of bees. Maybe you knocked a squirrel out of a tree with your tee shot…well, perhaps not that dramatic, but if you think you’ve got one heck of a golf story worth telling, we want to hear about it! to helping both the weekend duffer and scratch golfer improve their swing, lower their scores, and increase their enjoyment of the game. I can speak from experience that my time at GolfTEC has improved me from someone who used to score in the high nineties to a consistent (relative!) 16 handicapper. Now, if I could just shake that errant snowman from my scorecard, all would be well with the world! Yes, and those of us that need improvement now have another Seattle GolfTEC location with which to choose from. If South Lake Union or the Bellevue location doesn’t work for you, why not try the new Southcenter location? Nearly 75 people (golfers) had the opportunity to visit the Grand Opening on October 22, 23 and experience a free swing analysis by the golf instructors at the new Southcenter location in Tukwila. According to GolfTEC’s Seattle franchise owner Brett Allen, the Grand Opening exceeded his expectations, particularly as nearly 25 of the visitors went on to sign up for the more comprehensive 90-minute swing evaluations. “I am thrilled for GolfTEC to continue to grow throughout the Puget

Sound Region. With the closing of the Southcenter Driving Range it seemed like a great opportunity to expand in to the south end.” GolfTEC has 144 locations throughout North America, and with over 1.8 million lessons given to 170,000+ clients worldwide GolfTEC continues to turn your golfing goals into reality. Show Some Leg! by DIANA DEL GARBINO

From the hip to the toes, the legs are one of our most functional limbs. Legs have more than the duty of getting us from point A to point B. They have to move forward and back, side to side, and rotate both internally and externally. They also have to balance, hold us in place and take the weight of the upper body. GolďŹ ng adds another dimension to the leg because they have to do all that

work while the upper limbs are rotating and swinging a club at incredible rates of speed! Throughout the entire leg, there are dierent segments that do dierent functions. Quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, calves all serve a purpose. Just as important are the ligaments and tendons that hold them in place. There are three joints in the leg: hip, knee and ankle. More than just a pretty face, eh? Pretty and functional! As you can well imagine, the legs are a very important aspect of your golf swing. During the game, how many of you get tired walking the course? Have tightness in your hamstring? Can’t rotate fully through the swing or your knees start to hurt? Then there are the swing faults y our golf professional has pointed out: Over the top, early extension, losing your posture. These are all signs that your legs need more of your attention than you’re giving them. Hear me out on this for I’m not talking about stretching. I’m talking

about attention to the strength or lack thereof. Let’s take a second look at the beginning of this article and remember how much your legs have to do. Energy in the legs comes from solid lean muscle. Without it we wouldn’t walk, jump, dance, or play golf very well. Think about your legs as the capacity of the system to do the work. The deďŹ nition of strength is “the capacity for exertion or enduranceâ€?, the ability to withstand force, pressure or stress. By obtaining strength in the legs you will greatly reduce the strain that is placed on th e le g s d u rin g yo u r downswing. You will also reduce the circumstances that make injury possible. Some of the best exercises to increase strength and endurance in the legs are: Leg press: Working the hips in a weight-bearing exercise will keep them lubricated in the joint while working the

glutes, hamstrings and quadriceps. Hamstring curls: Maintaining hamH string strength will keep your legs balanced. Calf raises: Next to the glutes, calf muscles are often quite weak. Remedy this by adding small increments of weights to improve their strength. Deep squats: Progress from a seated q position or heels up, to feet at on the ground and then add weights for strong glutes! Leg extension: This isolates the quadriceps, but make sure you do not lock the legs all the way, putting less stress on the knee and more on the muscle of the quadriceps. Best Golf Gift & Stocking Stuffer Ideas For the Holidays NEW NIKE SQ MACHSPEED BLACK Fans of Nike clubs will be happy to receive the new SQ MACHSPEED Black Driver. Capitalizing on the power of aerodynamics found in the

Nike SQ MACHSPEED Driver that was released last spring, Nike Golf is taking the notion of aerodynamics efficiency to the h next llevell with h its new SQ MACHSPEED Black Driver. Available at retail November 26, 2010, the Nike SQ MACHSPEED Black Driver has two 460cc round and square heads and features a sleek black profile to ensure that the air moves quickly and cleanly over the club head with each swing. A deeper face allows for the delivery of greater ball speed across the face resulting in greater distance on off center hits. The face of the club head is tall and tapers quickly, enabling more forgiveness. Also differentiating from its predecessor, the SQ MACHSPEED, is in the performance of ball flight. The SQ MACHSPEED Black produces a lower ball flight and lower spin rates than the original SQ MACHSPEED, thus helping to create longer drives. Available in round and square-shape, the SQ MACHSPEED Black Drivers offer Nike’s STR8-FIT technology, which delivers eight face angle options – two degrees open and two degrees closed. The square version promotes forgiveness and stability. The round version is for golfers who desire more workability and shot shaping. Both drivers come with Mitsubishi Rayon lightweight Fubuki shafts, which allow for maximum speed. Suggested retail: $359.99 FIERCE GOLF SHAFTS Who doesn’t want better feel, more length, and greater control from their golf clubs? Do You Golf, or Do You Play Golf? by BOB DUNCAN

Are you a golfer or a player of the game of golf? There’s a huge difference! Many in the golf industry have perpetuated a fallacy: That if you make your swing better it makes you a better player. Not true—it only makes you a better golfer. Golfers have been taught that every shot should be solid and straight, and you need only to make small adjustments in different situations to accomplish that.

They are continuously looking for the secret to the golf swing, and they want to be more consistent. They continuously blame their inability to hit it solid and straight on their inability to make a consistent swing, or to incorporate those swing improvements th e y ’ve b e e n taught. And, most of the time, golfers blindly prepare to hit the ball straight, not knowing when it will curve, with the mindset that it should go straight. They are also continuously frustrated, because the secret to hitting it solid and straight is so elusive. Dare we say that pursuit might be futile? Players, on the

10 GOLF TODAY MAGAZINE  NORTHWEST EDITION

other hand, understand that the enjoyment is in the play of the game. Examples of great players are Tiger Woods (of course), C o r e y Pavin, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Payne Stewart, and Jim Furyk. Except for Tiger, these are examples of players who have unusual golf swings and still understand how to get the ball around the golf course. Remember Arnold’s golf swing? It was like he was drawing the map of New Guinea in his finish! Unfortunately, the quest for distance and straight shots ‘trumps’ the play for many of us. We’re constantly bombarded with messages about how to make a better swing, or what swing keys we need to ‘bomb it’. Sure, it makes logical sense that to be more consistent you have to make a more consistent

swing...and sometimes that works on the range. But that would only work all the time if we were playing on a flat golf course! Think about it: the reason we play golf courses is because they are not flat. They have hazards, mounds, fast greens, and trees. When we play more difficult courses we are accepting the challenge to play them. If they were flat we probably wouldn’t want to play them—the game would be boring! So the question is, how do we take our talent – whatever level it may be – and like Corey Pavin, figure out how to use it to our advantage and not to our disadvantage? Perhaps we need to understand a few things: 1. That many times your ball will NOT go straight. Actually, maybe most of the time. After all, most of us don’t play golf for a living, we’re not all Tour players, and we don’t play on flat golf courses. 2. That when you take out the driver you’re adding risk, and accepting the risk to hit it farther— but not continued on page 29

Industry Outlook: Building Your Golf Business by MIKE ROSAS As we approach the holidays, retailers can count on seeing improved business. The preparations are lengthy: increase inventory, rearrange displays, prepare for longer hours and add staff, just to name a few. And since golf is a niche market, if you are running a traditional bricks-andmortar store you are a destination stop for shoppers. Naturally, you want—and need—your store to shine. Shoppers have a lot of choices as to where they can spend their money! The same applies to those of you who are either exclusively online or a combination of e-commerce and conventional retail. You must make your on-line image just as presentable, usable, and inviting. If you haven’t taken these steps, it is not too late but then again, can you really afford to delay? EASY WAYS TO HELP YOU ATTRACT AND RETAIN CUSTOMERS WITH SMART ONLINE MARKETING. 1. CREATE A BLOG Blogs are like a scrolling, online journal and can be an effective way to market your golf business. Successful blogs are interesting, well written, and user friendly. Stick to the subject (golf!) but vary your content. You can write articles loaded with golf tips, best courses to play in Spain, Ireland, or Florida, and even pay homage to your favorite icons. Within the blog, you then make reference to golf gifts for the holidays and include the link to your site. The benefits may be obvious to you, but some may not be, so I will list a few of the key marketing benefits. First, you are building a relationship with golfers who may be potential customers.

Second, you are driving traffic to your site. If other sites pick up your blog, your content could be syndicated, thereby increasing your exposure and your traffic. Third, you are increasing your credibility in the eyes of golfers because you are demonstrating your knowledge. Finally, the links back to your website can increase your page ranking for search engines. This is particularly true if you create a blog on Blogger.com because Google owns Blogger.com. Therefore, every page of Blogger.com is indexed and the spiders follow the links from the pages. Perhaps writing is not your forte whereas golf is. Or maybe you dread the idea or need to update your blog regularly. This is, in fact, a service that can be outsourced through a marketing agency. 2. SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING Don’t be fooled into thinking that Search Engine Marketing plays second fiddle to Blogging. In my opinion, this is the most important marketing activity you can do to drive traffic to your site. Across most industries, 80% of site traffic comes from search engines. If you are setting up a new website, ensure your site is submitted to search engines. This will help your visibility on the web and drive more traffic to your site. Search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN all have submissions pages available: Google: http://www.google.com/addurl Yahoo: http://search.yahoo.com/info/ submit.html MSN: http://beta.search.msn.com/ docs/submit.aspx

However, simply submitting your URL to search engines is not enough. This is when “being one step ahead” matters. To appear in natural search results, you need plenty of keyword-rich content that can be picked up by search engines and these hese keywords will need to appearr in the meta tags of your site. It’s also important to keep your our content fresh. Search engines nes like big, fresh sites, so constantly antly updating your site and keeping ing the information on current will go a long way towards wards increasing your our visibility. To increase crease your search engine ranking, it is also lso important to get many other golf related ted sites (like blogs) to link to yours. Appearing pearing in natural search results requiress Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on n your site. You can alsoo pay to appear on the first page of search h engine results. These are called ‘ad word d campaigns’ and you pay each time someone meone clicks on your ad. You can set upp a campaign on Google or Yahoo or a marketing arketing agency can set up and run the campaign ampaign for you. 3. SOCIAL BOOK OOK MARKING There is a new generation of Internet sites called social cial network sites. Examples include nclude www.stumbleupon. com, www.del.icio.us, el.icio.us, www.digg.com. Huge communities unities bookmark websites that they like. By bookmarking your site, these communities nities are then recommending your site too thousands of other members of the network who share the same interest. You can generate a lot of traffic to your site by having a ‘bookmark link’.

When a person or community uses your provided link, they in turn endorse you on their site. Or on stumbleupon.com, you can pay to have your site promoted to the network of users and if they bookmark

it, many other members of the network will see your site. 4. ENSURE YOUR SITE HAS ATTRACTIVE CONTENT Using a website for business promotion continued contin nued on page 12

12 GOLF TODAY MAGAZINE  NORTHWEST EDITION

NOVEMBER 2010

only works if you site is attractive to visitors. When the site is attractive, visitors will return to your site or visit your facility. Visitors will also recommend your site by grabbing that bookmark link or pass it on to a friend in another form. But how do you know if your site is attractive to others? Whether you are using an agency, consultant or working independently, ask visitors and friends alike for their feedback. So what kind of content co should you offer? Just as you would woul with a blog, you need to ensure that yyou have interesting information and im images. If you are looking to drive people peopl to your store or course, make your location loc clear and be extra friendly by giving giv directions or travel details about the hotels and car hire. Most importantly, impor ensure you have attractive in information about the products or golf courses – sell the experience that they could have. Make sur sure you use large images, and ideal ideally, in a macro flash photo show or o movie brochure. Small and un uninteresting images should be avo avoided as those only encourage visitors to shop elsewhere. The goal is to have a site that is useful, memorable a n d in inspiring.

You can also position yourself by uploading the video to YouTube and Google video where it will be found by anyone searching for ‘golf holiday’. 6. ONLINE PR You don’t have to be a big company in order to issue a press release. You should plan two or three interesting events or promotions for your business throughout the year and then issue a press release to promote each event. Your press release will be distributed to hundreds of media sites across the net and will also appear in Google News and Yahoo News. This

greatly increases the chances of golf journalists, golf sites and golf blogs picking up your release and writing an online article on your story, which will in turn drive traffic to your site. 7. EMAIL CAMPAIGNS Email campaigns are a great way to tell your customers, active or potential, that you are looking forward to being part of their golf experience. Keeping an up-todate database of client names and email addresses ensures that when you need to call attention to your company, you can do so quickly. This is one way of not

waiting for the customer to come to you but rather you go to them. Again, it all boils down to well written and thought out communication so proceed with the desire to make a great impression every time. Mike Rosas is the principal of AS Group Marketing/The Alternative Solutions, LLC. He can be reached at 425-742-3679, email: mike@thealternativesolutions, or visit www.thealternativesolutions.net for more information.

5. MARKET Y YOUR BUSINESS WITH B YOUTUBE Y A YouTube movie brochure is an affordable way to create a video of your y service using images, capti captions and music. You can bring br your holiday golf shopping ssuggestions to life by highlighting the th features of your service (expert kno knowledge, personal touch, golf lessons, custom club fitting) by including quotes from customers with photos of golfers enjoying themselves. Take advantage of this media form by showcasing golf equipment or golf tournaments in order to sell the experience. It is an impactful way of building emotional engagement with potential customers and is a very useful marketing tool. Using YouTube is actually quite easy and can offer long-term results. Since YouTube can be streamed to your website, it is an easy way to fill content while making sure that the video will be seen with little effort. Visitors can download your YouTube video to their video iPod in order to show fellow golfers where they are going and what kind of service they will receive. Additionally, You Tube videos and photo’s now work with Twitter, and Facebook, so customers can share your YouTube video with all of their friends. NOVEMBER 2010

Guernsey opened the final round scoring a 3-under par 33 and had a 1-stroke lead over Tennant but was unable to keep the pressure on her throughout the round. A barrage of bogeys on holes 11 thru 14 including a double bogey on the difficult par-3 11th was too much to recover from, especially when facing a tenacious experienced competitor like Tennant. Guensey’s sole consolation was earning the top spot among the Senior Division Men who competed in the championship.

“What a great event,” said Tennant. “I was down at the turn and I knew I really had to focus. She added, “It’s great to play against the boys.” With this title, she becomes the first woman to win the Players Championship crown. Last year’s inaugural Players Champion, Chris Maletis, 62, of Portland, Ore. came from the ranks of the Senior Men’s division, but he was unable to defend his title due to injury. The OGA Players Championship is the first championship of its kind in the nation. “In many of our events there is a senior and open division or a women’s and men’s division where the players compete on the same course on the same days for separate titles,” noted Whittaker. “I’m proud that we’ve created a competition that both honors our best players as well as allowing them to compete both with and against each other regardless of their respective divisions.” To provide an equitable opportunity for all representative to win the overall title, each division plays from a different set of tees ranging from 5,561-yards for the Senior Women to 6,542-yards for the Men.

“Our Tournament of Champions really honors all the best players from each OGA Member Club,” reflected OGA Director of Tournament Operations

Photo courtesy of the OGA Brent Whittaker as he addressed the contestants at the Players banquet Saturday night. “To add more exemptions into that event for those players that have exhibited the best performance at state, regional and national events would take away from that honor.” “David Jacobsen, a member at Waverley who sits on the OGA Championship Committee, suggested we come up with an event specifically to honor the best of the best and then went the extra mile to have the founding member club of the OGA be the host for this unique championship its first two years,” he added. Players are invited to play in this event based on the performance points that

they’ve earned during the year. Points are earned based on a schedule of numerous state, regional and national events. They are paired according to their respective divisions in the first round, then repaired based on score for the final round regardless of division. The youngest person in this year’s field was Monica Vaughn, 15, of Reedsport, Ore. who this year became the youngest person ever in its 101-year history to win the Oregon Amateur and the third women in the combined 80-year history to hold both the Women’s Amateur and Girls Junior Amateur titles while Joan Edwards-Powell, 50 years her senior, was the oldest to compete. Awards were also handed out to the top player representing each division. The best round of the tournament was posted by Portland State Golf coach Bill Winter who posted a 1-under par 71 to finish in a tie for third along with one of his PSU protoge’s Jake Wagner. Both finished 2-stroke off the pace and would have to settle with sharing honors atop the Men’s Division representatives. The next best Women’s Division player was Brie Stone of Veneta, Ore. who claimed the top spot among the remaining women. Joan Edwards-Powell improved upon her first round score by 10-strokes. In addition to capturing the top spot among the Senior Women who competed in this event, the Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Famer will be inducted into the PIL (Portland Interscholastic League) Hall of Fame this evening. Albertson’s Heir Invests In Iconic Idaho Resort Properties Legendary grocery store magnate Joe Albertson had his supermarkets. He founded the chain in Boise, Idaho, in 1939 and grew it into an industry leader that peaked at 2,500 stores nationwide before SUPERVALU acquired it in 2006. Although the business pursuits of Albertson’s grandson Joe Scott are more leisure-oriented, they are every bit as ambitious as his namesake’s -- especially considering today’s economic clime.

Scott, owner of Alscott Real Estate, recently acquired sole ownership of two iconic Central Idaho properties: the historic Shore Lodge resort and the private golf community Whitetail Club in McCall. With the help of several partners, he revitalized Shore Lodge and made it once again available to the public in 2008 (it was available only to a select few for nearly two decades under the prior owner). Now, having purchased all remaining

interests in Shore Lodge and Whitetail Club from his former partners, Scott is seeking to transform the latter property into the Northwest’s most desirable, family-friendly year-round, mountain-lake residential resort community. Despite a very challenging and uncertain market sector, Scott has several things working in his favor: The properties are debt free, the wide array of amenities is fully developed, and he enjoys a lev-

el of financial strength that is exceedingly rare. Furthermore, Scott is investing a great deal via new, experienced leadership personnel, infrastructure enhancements, extra amenities, and new cabin products and multiple membership opportunities that are more in line with changing social trends. As a result, he’s helping evolve the traditional model of the private resort community. continued on page 21

Escape To The Wailea Golf Club This Winter! Golfers would be remiss if their handicap doesn’t include a few scorecards from the Wailea Golf Club on Maui. With more than 7 dozen golf and travel accolades, the Wailea Golf Club is a perennial name on the leaderboard for the world’s best golf destinations, renown for its superior course conditions, high level of customer service and drop-dead vistas from virtually every hole. The rugged and lean Wailea Gold has been named to numerous “best of ” lists – Best Resort Courses, Best Public Access Courses, America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses and America’s Top Golf Courses, to name a few. The former site of the Champions Skins Game plays 7,070 yards from the tips and rewards players who can tackle this Hawaiian beauty with strategy and finesse. Ancient lava rock walls and sparkling white sand bunkers

come into play, and while on-course lakes are kept to a minimum, sweeping panoramas of the ocean can be distracting enough to almost count as a serious water hazard. The Wailea Emerald is a more genial and lushly landscaped layout, but players shouldn’t be deceived by its pretty looks. Four to six tee boxes on every hole allow golfers to tailor the course to their playing level, and accurate ball placement is key to scoring well. Like the Gold, the Emerald has received numerous awards and its scenery is spectacular. The Gold and Emerald are serviced by Wailea’s award-winning clubhouse, where golfers can browse a spacious pro shop and take advantage of golf therapy services, rental clubs and shoes, the 12-acre outdoor training facility, and Hawaii’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Off the course are Wailea’s luxurious hotels and condominium villas, white-sand beaches, world-class spas, dozens of eateries and ample entertainment and activity options. “It Takes Patience, Will And Discipline To Improve Your Game By JEFF FF RITTER

I have always been a fan of Martial Arts as a source of understanding and wisdom on the journey one takes from novice to expert. There is a tremendous book called “Zen Guitar by Philip Toshio Sudo, I highly recommend, even if you are not a

music enthusiast. In the book, Sudo tells the story of the young man who enters the Dojo and asks his master, “How long until I will be a black belt? To his dismay, his master replies, “You will never be a black belt, for anyone who is so impatient to ask this question does not have the discipline required to be a black belt. The lesson is, many people lack the patience required to be great at something. I truly believe in golf, with the proper blueprint, any golfer can improve and improve immediately. With that being said, it takes patience, will and d discipline to be deserving of the black beltt in the game of golf. I often get this samee type of question as it relates to someone’s golf game. “When will I be able to breakk 100? 90? 80? My answer: “When youu deserve to. Not what most people wantt to hear, but it’s the only honest answer I can give. For those who struggle with the idea of a challenge, I try to instill in them what is known as the “Black Belt Mentality.

It’s adapted from the story above and is a useful way of getting golfers to set the stage for their aims and ambitions. In martial arts, every student begins their journey at the white belt level. This is something most people are aware of. Mostly unknown, is the term black belt was born from the fact the white belt over time became black from the hours, months and years of continual training. The “Black Belt Mentalityâ€? is to understand the training never ends, and the practice never ends. There will never be a day when you say “I have itâ€? and you can stop practicing and learning. New Salish Cliffs Golf Club at Little Creek Casino Resort (Shelton, WA) on Target for Opening in 2011 The new Salish Cliffs Golf Club – an amenity of the Squaxin Island Tribe’s Little Creek Casino Resort near Olympia and Seattle, Wash. – showed rapid development during the summer months with favorable weather, and is on schedule to open in late spring 2011. All 18 holes and the driving range / practice facility have been shaped and seeded with T1 bentgrass turf. In addition, construction of the log and cedar clubhouse began earlier this month and is expected to be done by winter’s end. “Watching Salish Clis Golf Club come to life is gratifying,â€? says Ray Peters, Executive Director of the Squaxin Island Tribe. “We knew this property had tremendous potential, and seeing it blossom the last few months has reinforced our belief that it will oer a unique playing experience.â€? The clubhouse – which will reect the style and structure of Little Creek Casino Resort – is being built next to a deep ravine situated near a bridge that spans between hole Nos. 1 and 10, boasting 360-degree views of the Kamilche Valley. The structure will feature a wraparound porch overlooking hole Nos. 9 and 18, providing a perfect location for

Introduced by the AJGA in 1978, the Rolex Junior All-America Teams annually recognize players who have established themselves as the world’s premier junior golfers. This year’s selections distinguished themselves through their outstanding play in 77 national events, 60 of which were conducted by the AJGA. The Rolex Junior All-Amer-

ica Teams were determined exclusively through the Polo Golf Rankings as of Oct. 20. The teams are comprised of 96 junior golfers, ages 13-18, from 23 states and six foreign countries (Canada, Israel, Mexico, Northern Ireland, the Philippines and Thailand). These standouts will be honored at the Rolex Junior AllAmerica Awards Banquet, Nov. 21, at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Former Rolex Junior All-Americans comprise the top players on both the PGA and LPGA Tours. Of the PGA TOUR’s current top-10 money leaders, Matt Kuchar, Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Hunter Mahan were all Rolex Junior All-Americans, while Mickelson (198688) and Mahan (1999) were Rolex Junior Players of the Year. On the LPGA Tour, Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome and Cristie Kerr were named Rolex Junior All-Americans as junior golfers before working their way to the top of the pay-for-play ranks. Kino Springs—Star Studded History By CLIFFORD COWLEY A year ago last summer, I drove to Texas to help my daughter and son-in-law put a roof on their house. On my way home, I stopped by Sandei Jackson’s house in Nogales, Arizona. Her parents and my parents had been best friends. While there, she asked me if my brother and I would like to have the Reinhard family china. It was an honor, but my car was packed with construction tools. So, I planned another trip for this year. I mentioned the trip to Cameron Healey, our publisher/editor. He asked me to combine work with vacation and research golf courses of the Southwest Desert Region for our upcoming issues. After 4,500 miles, 30 days, 24 courses, and 5 resorts, I have good news for travelers, snow birds, and destination golfers--the desert packs ‘em in! I found golf courses in places I never expected. Golf courses in the desert states are like gas stations used to be when I was growing up, practically, one on every corner. And I’m sure I missed some mighty fine places to golf, but that’s another trip--another issue. In my never ending quest to find golfing gems for our readers, allow me to share another gem I found in the desert--Kino Springs Golf Club. Kino Springs is located just outside of Nogales. Nogales, a sleepy little border town

of 20,000, is nestled within the Patagonia Mountain Range in the southernmost tip of Arizona. At an elevation of 3,800 ft, it’s cooler than Phoenix by at least 15 degrees. Even in the summer months, the high temperature is an average of 96 degrees with lows in the 50’s to 60’s. Agriculture and cattle are the main contributors to the area economy. The secret to the Kino Springs community is the people. The area’s homes are inhabited mostly by retirees who enjoy the year round temperate climate. People are friendly, easy going, and helpful. Sandei has lived in the area for over 20 years. Her uncle once owned the two-thousand acre Buena Vista Ranch whose southern property line shares the boundary between the U.S. and Mexico. His ranch also borders the 5,280-acre Yerba Buena Ranch, once owned by Stewart Granger and his wife, Jean Simmons. The Grangers hosted frequent guests in their ranch house estate such as John Wayne, who had his own private bungalow built next to the pool, and Elizabeth Taylor. The Granger ranch house now serves as the course’s restaurant and bar, and is loaded with pictures and memorabilia from the Granger era. Just as the Granger’s continued on page 32

Golf Alliance Unveils Economic Impact Study OREGON’S GOLF ECONOMY ESTIMATED AT $1.2 BILLION; CONTRIBUTES MORE THAN 27,000 JOBS. REPORT PROVIDED BY OREGON GOLF ASSOCIATION Representing the Golf Alliance of Oregon (GAO), Barb Trammell, CEO of the Oregon Golf Association recently unveiled the results of an economic impact study at Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City. The research study was conducted on behalf of the Golf Alliance of Oregon, a consortium of the major trade and consumer golf associations. “This was the first major undertaking of our alliance,” noted Trammell. “We came together because it is important that we address the issues that face our industry together and with one voice. “With the region’s economy showing few signs of recovery, the state searching for solutions to its budget mess, and concerns regarding the environment and sustainability, the GAO funded a study to quantify the impact golf has in our communities. The study, conducted by SRI International of Menlo Park, Calif. was also funded in part by Golf 20/20, an initiative of the World Golf Foundation.

“In order to get the attention of decision-makers, it is important that we be able to quantify the contributions of our industry to those that may be affected,” noted Trammell. “The continued health and growth of the golf industry has a direct bearing on future jobs, commerce, economic development, and tax revenues for a large number of Oregon’s communities and industries,” she added. Dr. Peter Ryan, provided details on the project he led on behalf of SRI International and the World Golf Foundation. “The importance of golf in Oregon extends beyond the golf facilities themselves. With $1.2 billion of direct economic activity in 2008, the sheer size of the game of golf makes it a major industry in its own right and a significant contributor to Oregon’s economy,” added Ryan. “That makes Oregon’s golf industry revenues comparable in size to other important industries here including paper manufacturing ($3.7 billion), software publishing ($1.4 billion), and even the greenhouse and nursery business ($0.9 billion).””In total, Oregon’s golf industry generated an economic impact of $2.5 billion, supporting nearly 27,200 jobs

28 GOLF TODAY MAGAZINE  NORTHWEST EDITION

with $703.6 million of wage income,” said Ryan. “Golf is an essential component for many local charities and their fundraising efforts,” added Trammell. Charitable events hosted on Oregon’s golf courses benefited local non-profit organizations with $28.5 million in charitable giving attributed to the game of golf. “Our industry, including golf course owners, club managers, and golf professionals, are happy to serve as access points for fundraising by local service organizations,” said Trammell who also noted that golf is the only private-sector industry to provide free or significantly discounted fees to high school athletic programs. Golfer supplies represented the largest golf industry segment (owing to Nike Golf ’s headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.) amounting to $464.6 million, followed by golf facility revenues totaling $361.7 million and golf-related hospitality and tourism at $221.8. Real Estate also is benefited by golf. “In 2008, a tough economic year, golfrelated residential construction contributed $62.2 million to the state economy, and a “golf premium” generated by sales of

existing golf community homes was $11 million,” noted Ryan. Gregory T. Lyman, Environmental Programs Director for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America discussed golf ’s focus on stewardship of the environment. “Golf courses provide diverse habitats for a range of wildlife, and Oregon golf courses take their environmental stewardship seriously,” said Lyman. “Your state should be proud that it leads the country in the number of Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries.” There are presently 19 golf course certified sanctuaries and Tetherow in Bend, Ore. is Bronzelevel signature sanctuary. ABOUT THE GOLF ALLIANCE OF OREGON Led by the Oregon Golf Association which represents the most avid golf consumers, the Golf Alliance of Oregon is comprised of the major industry associations for the region including the Oregon Golf Course Owners Association, Pacific Northwest PGA - Oregon Chapter, Oregon Golf Course Superintendents and the Club Managers of Oregon.

necessarily straighter. You’re choosing to accept the risk! That the ball doesn’t always ago exactly the same distance or direction. The lie, the wind, the landing zone – these all contribute to changes in distance. And if it doesn’t go straight on a flat lie, then what happens everywhere else? That there ARE bad bounces out there. There are good ones too. Did you see the umpire’s call in baseball this year that prevented a perfect game for Detroit pitcher Armando Gallaraga? More importantly, did you see Gallaraga’s response? He SMILED! I want him on my team. That the ball CAN go in the hole. If you can physically hit it as far as the hole, it CAN go in. But because it probably won’t, most people believe it won’t. Hey – we’re playing a game here – forget probabilities. The chances are 50-50. Of course it can go in! Believe in it. If it doesn’t, respond like Armando Gallaraga... That golf is a game. It cannot

be conquered. It can only be played! So if you want to be a player you need to learn that there’s more to the game than perfect technique, and that in many cases a perfect swing will actually fail. It’s not as important that it will fail, but to what degree will it fail, what direction and distance will that failure be, and what you should do about it? Everyone crash-lands their ball some of the time. The rarity that the ball performs exactly as the perfect swing model suggests means that the pursuit of the ‘perfect swing’ may be more futile than the pursuit of baseball’s perfect game—playing the game and getting the ‘win’ is far more important. THE FLOPPY INDOOR GOLF BALL You can play golf anywhere, anytime! As winter closes in and hopes for one more day of golf are dashed with each falling leaf, all hope is not lost for a few more thrill moments to tide one over to next season. Its

called The Floppy Indoor Golf Ball, and it just may be the key to keeping the fun alive all year round! The Floppy® is the first indoor golf ball of its kind. Aim at a wall or window and the ball bounces back towards the player without bouncing all of the room causing damage. Professional players work pitch and chip shots and improve their short game using the ball. It’s especially nice to use when on the road, since no damaging hotel room bills will result. This is safe way to confidently accelerate through impact indoors to get practice time, and a few more thrill shots, in from just about anywhere. For a list of retailers to purchase online, including Target, please visit www.thefloppy.com. SWING LIKE A PRO The apps that are available for iPhones continue to fascinate me and Swing Like a Pro, an iPhone application for golfers, is taking golf swing analysis to a different level. Using the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer with advanced motion analysis technology, Swing Like a Pro enables golfers to simulate a swing using the iPhone, and immediately compare their swing to the reference swing of a golf NOVEMBER 2010

pro. Users can view and analyze their swing speed, acceleration, tempo, back swing and follow-through completion, make adjustments to their swing, and improve their game in real time. The primary feature of Swing Like a Pro is the recording and analysis of hand position throughout the swing. Typically, hand position is almost impossible to accurately monitor – either by video or by an actual pro in the field – because the swing oc occurs so rapidly. Swing Swin Like a Pro collects collec 100 data points point per second on hand speed and a position through the swing. The

data then determines the trajectory of the swing, which is displayed on screen and compared with the reference swing of a golf pro. By analyzing and adjusting swing trajectory, every golfer can dramatically improve their ball flight path and distance. Swing Like a Pro is bundled with short videos that cover golf swing and putting basics to further help golfers improve their swings. Designed by Golfcepts, Swing Like a Pro is available in the iTunes Store for $9.99, and is compatible with the iPhone 2G, 3G, and 4G, and the iPod Touch. did, Kino Springs Golf Club offers guests earnest out-west hospitality. The course, designed by renowned Arizona architect Red Lawrence in the 70’s, is now managed by Director of Golf, Keith Mundy. The par 71 layout stretches 6,445 yards from the tips, 5,835 from the whites, and 5,279 from the forward tees, promising a true test to high and low handicappers alike. The course begins with a 539-yard, dog-leg right, par 5, that can be reached in two with a well placed drive and solid second shot up hill to a sloping green. Through the 4th hole, you will marvel at the view of the Patagonia Mountains surrounding the “meadowlands” track. Holes #5 through #13 wind their way through canyons offering a golfing challenge even to the best of golfers. In fact, on hole #5, there is a sign that quotes Dante, “All ye who enter here, abandon all hope.” This stretch of nine holes offers the most picturesque holes in Southern Arizona, if not the state. The course has a lot of character, with no two holes alike. Blind shots, must carries, and strategic decisions abound, allowing the gambling golfer to take a chance on every hole. My favorite canyon hole is #11. At 417 yards, this dog-leg, par 4, has an elevated tee, and a risk-reward opportunity to the

green over a hazardous, tree studded, waste area if you want to cut the corner; good luck finding your ball if you miscalculate on your drive. If you got the guts, take the shot. If you choose to play safe (yeah, sure, we do it all the time, right?) it’s a 230 yard shot to the corner, but if you go too far, you’ll find yourself in rough there, too. On top of that, the green is a downhill shot bordered by a steep drop off into a canyon. Good luck finding your ball there, too! It’s just a fun hole to try to master. You could play it 10 times and never play it the same way twice. After your adventure in the canyon, the last five holes return to the meadowlands for a much h deserved break. The fairways are a mixture of bermuda, The over seeded with rye, and native grasses that allow forgiving shots from a semitightt lie. The greens are accurate, smooth oth and fast. Most are postage stamp mp size, and many have a two tier construction. Their slopee and undulations make them m capable of producing ng that successful, beautiful breaking aking putt, culminating

in a high five from your partner. After your round, take a stroll of the grounds. Take in your favorite beverage in the restaurant as you add up your score. You’ll enjoy the historical ambience of the house and pool area. Another great feature of the course is that it takes a couple rounds to figure out where to play your ball for the best score, adding to the overall experience. But, the best thing about this gem of an 18-hole course is the price. Even in peak season, you can play for under $50.00 with a cart. Keith Mundy touts the course as the “best play for the best price in Arizona.” I would have to agree. Kino Springs offers history, spectacular views, and a a course with a lot of chara character unmatched in the region. regi And don’t forget to say hello to John Wayne and Elizabeth Taylor Ta while you are there.

Sean McLean Occupation—1st Assistant Stone Ridge Golf Course Location—White City, Oregon

In the spring of 2005, Sean McLean stopped by Stone Ridge Golf Course in Southern Oregon, looking for a part-time job. “I was working on my associate’s degree in Business Management at Rogue Community College,” he says. Head Pro, Scott Lusk, hired him to work in outside services. “The work schedule was great,” says Sean. “It fit into my schedule for school, and allowed me to do homework after my shift,” he adds. As he continued to work on his bachelor’s degree in Accounting Management and a minor in Psychology at Southern Oregon University, Sean grew into the business of golf. Scott liked what he saw, and in 2008, he offered

Having never golfed before working at Stone Ridge, and ne wanting to see what it was that drove people to wa the links so religiously, he decided to give it a try. th Like us all, after his first round, he was hooked. Lik So, he bought a used set of Taylormade irons from a marshal ma for $80, and began his quest to “conquer” golf. Afte After five years, Sean is now down to an impressive 66.55 index. index “I am very happy with the development of my golf game,” he says, “but as we all know, it always feels like an uphill battle. Playing golf also helps me understand our customers.” Sean’s favorite part of golf is the different people he gets to golf with. “No matter how I’m golfing, I am always having fun,” he says. “I love working with the public and especially the golf community because I am constantly surrounded by great people.” For someone who took a job just to help pay the bills, Sean McLean seems to have found much more than that—he’s found a career.
