ulti-million pound plans to build an 84-bedroom hotel and 40 lodges at Wildwood Golf and Country Club in Surrey have been given the go-ahead. The £30 million pound investment, which will also see the 27-hole club become the southern regional headquarters for the Professional Golfers Association, received overwhelming backing at a planning meeting held in March. The plans will make Wildwood a centre of excellence for junior golf in the region and create over 200 jobs. There were fears that the major boost for sport, tourism and employment would be lost, after local planning officers had advised that the scheme should be turned down because of conflicts with countryside and historic building policies. However, at the meeting of the borough council’s joint planning committee, speaker after speaker called for the ‘exciting’ opportunity not to be lost, acknowledging the outstanding economic benefits of the scheme to the local community. More than 240 letters had been written in favour of the plans, further showing the considerable local support for the project. Wildwood’s managing director, Phil Harrison, said the PGA was committed to

moving to Wildwood, while the Hilton group would operate the hotel and lodge development. Pointing to major golf developments at places like The Belfry, Gleneagles and Celtic Manor, Mr Harrison said: “None of these facilities would have been built if they had not had the support of the local councils to overcome planning issues because of their

location. Each one of these facilities has revitalised the local economy, and at the same time protected their countryside location.” The £30 million investment proposed would, he said, ‘provide jobs both permanent and during construction, a lifeline to local pubs and restaurants and much needed accommodation for the huge number of

Last year’s inaugural Seve Ballesteros Foundation Pro-Am at Foxhills Club & Resort raised over £60,000 for Cancer Research UK, and the organisers are hoping to break that record when the tournament returns to the popular Surrey resort later this year. The 2011 Seve Ballesteros Foundation Pro-Am is set for September 19, and will include breakfast, 18 holes of golf with a PGA Southern Region professional, dinner and a raffle. Last year guests were treated to Spanish wines and tapas during the round, while the day’s special guest was Seve’s elder brother, Manuel. Teams of three cost £900.
