pened in April 1993, World Woods Golf Club has since firmly firmly established itself as one of North America’s finest golf facilities. World Woods offers two championship layouts, both consistently rated among the top 100 courses in the USA. For good measure, World Woods also boasts one of the top-ranked practice facilities in America. Golf Digest awarded the Pine Barrens Course at World Woods its highest rating of five stars for 2004/2005, which is defined as “Golf at its absolute best. Pay any price at least once in your life.” This is the second time that Pine Barrens has earned this coveted award. Courses were rated on course conditioning, pace of play, service, value for the money, and overall golf experience. Of the 3,500 public courses in North 8

America, Mexico and the Caribbean that were rated, rated only 16 received the coveted Five Stars. Included in this exclusive group were Bethpage State Park (Black Course), The Homestead Resort, Kiawah Island (Ocean Course), Pebble Beach Golf Links, and Whistling Straits (Straits Course). Among Florida’s 1,200-plus golf courses, Pine Barrens was the only one to receive a five-star rating. World-renowned architect Tom Fazio carved two distinctly different courses out of ancient live oak groves and pine tree forests along the rolling terrain of Florida’s Nature Coast in northwest Hernando County. “We didn’t start by designing golf holes, “ said Fazio. “We began by viewing the big picture, the land mass, the scale, the concept. We allowed the land to tell us what to do.”

Pine Barrens No. 16 Pine Barrens is an intimidating layoutt named for its large number of pine ttrees and barren waste areas. Its terrain is remi-niscent of the sand hills of North Carolina. a.. Over 7,200 yards long, this par-71 coursee has impressed all players – amateurs and professionals alike – who have challenged it. Requiring long carries as well as precise placement, Pine Barrens resembles Pine Valley, perennially ranked the best golf course in America. Rolling Oaks – 7,333 yards, par72 – is a traditional course with rolling hills and beauty rarely seen in Florida. Fairways lined with live oaks, dogwoods and magnolias complement large greens, which feature multiple tiers and cavernous bunkers. Fazio created a rare opportunity for golfers to practice in a Pine Barrens No. 1 variety of wind and sun conditions. The ude three chalpractice facilities also include lenging practice holes, a 9-hole short course featuring seven par-3s and two par-4s, and a two-acre putting course that has tremendous undulations guaranteed to challenge even the game’s best putters. “This is my best work,” said Fazio. ‘It’s like having Pine Valley and Augusta National plus the best practice facility in the world all in the same location.” World Woods took one more step last summer toward meeting its goal of being the southeast’s best 36-hole golf complex. 10

The Rolling Oaks Course reopened November 1, 2010 after a complete renovation. “Both courses at World Woods are in the best condition that I’ve ever seen them in since opening the facility,” said General Manager and Director of Golf Stan Cooke. ““My commitment to all customers is that yyour next World Woods experience will b be extraordinary with personal customer ssatisfaction guaranteed.” The greens on Rolling Oaks have been rre-surfaced with TifEagle Bermuda, chosen aaccording to Cooke because “TifEagle b best suits the topography and character of R Rolling Oaks. It is the proven grass with n no mutations based on all the choices we ttested.” While Rolling O Oaks’ contouring rremains the same, tthe greens have been rrestored to their origin nal size. This is a 20 p percent expansion in tthe size of the greens p prior to renovations. The Pine Barrens ccourse remains a par7 71 and Rolling Oaks rremains a par-72, but b both courses have eextensive new teeing grounds result resulting in extended yardages for both courses. Pine Barren’s FloraDwarf Bermuda greens remain in immaculate condition. With the renovation, Rolling Oaks greens will run as true and as fast as those on Pine Barrens. World Woods has also added new cart paths throughout the facility and a new fleet of golf carts. Wentworth Golf Club Ace Golf purchased member-owned Wentworth Golf Club in the fall of 2010 and immediately reduced dues by over half. At the beginning of 2011 – for the first time in its 20-year history as a private club – Wentworth became a semi-private facility. In the past six months golfers have rushed to play this course that was never previously open to the public and membership grew 25%. One recent customer summed it up: “Wentworth was the 13th course we played in two weeks and by far the best. Everything was in ship shape condition and the greens were outstanding.” Set among million-dollar homes, this challenging Steve Smyers-designed par-71 layout captures the architect’s personal sentiments, casting a different character onto each hole. Smyers has designed several courses in our area including Old Memorial and a rede-
sign of Isleworth Country Club in Orlando. The Wentworth course meanders through naturally rolling terrain with abundant wildlife. Each hole is designed to challenge golfers of every skill level and there are 83 “beachy” sand bunkers. The front nine flows through stately cypress heads, majestic pines and old oaks; the back nine presents a Scottish links-style layout to test your shot making ability. Course renovations during the Summer of 2010 included the installation of all new Platinum Paspallum greens. These state-of-the-art putting surfaces roll fast and true. The Wentworth clubhouse is an exhibit of European grandeur, its grand brick façade conjuring up visions of its English namesake and is a perfect banquet or meeting site. A new English pub is under construction and its grand opening is scheduled for late August 2011.

The Tampa Bay Sports Commission hosted the inaugural Tampa Bay Sneaker Soiree: A Celebration of Excellence in Sports Business, Thursday, June 2 at TPepin’s Hospitality Centre. “I’m thrilled to receive this esteemed award in a category with such an established group of women,” said Amy Hawk, tournament director of the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. “Tampa Bay is such a thriving sports town and to be recognized with such prominent sports leaders in our community is a true honor.” This prestigious award recognizes executive women in Tampa Bay who have made a significant impact in the community and sports arena. has led the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am becoming an award-winning event on the Champions Tour and in the Tampa Bay community. ■ Leadership Changes Announced At Transitions Championship Following a successful 2011 Transitions Championship which saw Gary Woodland earn his first career PGA TOUR victory over a terrific field, the Copperheads, host group for Tampa Bay’s PGA TOUR event, has announced their new executive lineup. David Robbins, a prominent local attorney and member of the Tampa Bay community, has succeeded Bob Banks as General Chairman after the latter completed a scheduled two-year term marked by significant growth for the event. Robbins had served as Vice General Chairman the past two years and enters his 9th year as a member of the Copperheads Board of Directors. Larry Morgan, owner of the Morgan Auto Group which owns a number of area auto dealerships and other businesses, assumes the role of Vice General Chairman. In addition, the Copperheads announced that Kevin Krisle has been named Tournament Director of the Transitions Championship in addition to becoming President of the Copperheads. Krisle is the former executive director of the PGA TOUR event in Memphis – St. Jude Classic - and joined in the success of the 2011 Transitions Championship

opportunity arose and it’s something we thought we could make work,” Bender said. “We’re just getting started, but we’re looking forward to the future and all the things we have in mind.” Some of those “things” include individual and two-player scramble leagues, to giving lessons – from quick and easy to in-depth – to hosting parties, and to just having good business when the mall is packed on the weekends. Bender foresees people hanging out, especially since they are licensed to serve beer, which is available on tap and in bottles, and have large, flat screen TVs, which will be tuned to golf tournaments and other sports events. Simulator rates start at $40 an hour ($20 for a half hour) regardless of the number of players using the machine. Airco was the latest victim of a down economy that has wreaked havoc on Tampa Bay area golf courses. The course had been losing money since 2008. In March, the Pinellas County Commission voted 6-1 to close down Airco. It left a three-month window for finding a private investor, but no takers were found. Continued on page 65

• A Message From The Chapter President Hello once again from the PGA Professionals of the West Central Chapter. Now that many of the snowbirds have gone back home, our roads and fairways are much easier to navigate and enjoy. I encourage all of you to visit many of the chapter’s fine courses on the outskirts of Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties. Congratulations go out to Jim Smith of Missing Links and Bill Shriver of Shriver Golf Academy for winning our first chapter “major” at Lexington Oaks G.C. They were senior and regular winners of the Stableford event. Thanks to Dave Creighton for hosting the event. Congratulations also to John Falcone of Dunedin CC & Matt Mitchell of The Downs Golf and also Travis Daniels & Fred Curtis of Isla del Sol Y&CC for finishing first in the chapter two-person team championship.
