GOLF TRAILS day, which made it a great success.
CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS FOR TAUPO Taupo Golf Club took most of the honours at this year’s Champion of Champions played at Kawerau last month. Led by former Bay of Plenty Representative Jason McIntosh the combined scores of their three representatives had them comfortable winners of the team’s trophy. Jason opened with a 4 under 67 which included a hole in one on the 7th then in the afternoon backed it up with a 69 to comfortably take the senior title. Fellow Taupo member Grant Hill who usually plays off a single figure handicap won the Intermediate title with outstanding rounds of 74 & 77 which would have had him very well placed in the senior field. Danny Mills who was Taupo ‘s junior rep did enough to ensure they won the teams title. There were great celebrations from the support crew from Murupara when their junior champion Rua Te Pairi took out the junior championship.

Mike & Laurel Flattery (Mount Maunganui) made it three in a row in winning Group 1of the 2014 Mixed Foursomes Tournament and trophy “Stanley Cup” at Mount Maunganui Golf Club. The 2014 Mixed Foursomes Tournament was held on November 1 and 2, and featured a play off between two pairs with previous winning credentials. Mike & Laurel Flattery (Mt Maunganui) having withstood challenges from another local pairing, Phil Maddren/Lesley Noel met up with Martin & Shirley Te Moni (Ngaruawahia) both pairs having previously won the trophy. Martin & Shirley Te Moni had to withstand a strong challenge from a local pairing of Brent Curnow & Caryl Cashmore to progress to the final, Group 1 Plate winners were a “make – up pair of Michael Connor (Akarana) and Sharon Ferris (Mount). Group 2 winners Paul & Suzanne Shaw (Mt Maunganui) needed to deal with challenges from locals to Win. They certainly mastered the 2’s competition with a good haul over the 2 days. Group 3 also featured a number of local players. Finally won by Dean Muller (Mount & Kath Whyte. Group 4 won by Rex & Cherie Bezer (Otumoetai). “A great Course – A great Tournament – Fantastic people – Didn’t realise Foursomes was so great”. (Comments by visitors). The 2014 Mixed Foursome tournament stood the test of time with 4 Divisions of 16 mixed pairs from 23 Clubs – Otago (2), Northland (2), Auckland (18), Waikato (18), Hawkes Bay (2), Gisborne (2) and the wider Bay of Plenty (23) venturing out
The battle of the Bay of Plenty and Waikato continued on Sunday, 16th November, with a very strong force of 25 golfers who left the Waikato behind and travelled across the Kaimai Range to Mount Maunganui sample our course, the beach and the weather and to take the Interclub Trophy back. This was the 17th Interclub between the 2 clubs with Lochiel winning a few more times than the Mount Maunganui Club. Their team, made up was of members of Lochiel and Narrows golf clubs – who now form the Riverside Golf Club, returned to Mount Maunganui following an earlier postponed interclub due unseasonal weather. Mount Maunganui Golf Club fielded a solid force of 24 players, most playing well and showing that home advantage does help to avoid the traps that are out there. Great to see some new faces playing interclub. The weather behaved presenting only a strong westerly wind to deal with. A most enjoyable and friendly golf day and played in great spirit by all players involved, establishing the scene and raising the interest for the return battle in 2015. Mount Maunganui Golf Club took charge of the day and relieved Riverside Golf Club of the Interclub Trophy with a stableford average of 34.04 slightly ahead of the Riverside 32.84.
