field of 64 pairs was extended to 68 to satisfy the need. The extremely popular format of one day of 4BBB, then Ambrose followed by Foursomes on the last day. Played in almost perfect conditions on this beautiful course overlooking the Tauranga harbour and in the shadow of the Kaimai Range. The first day leaders, for the men, were John Turner and Barry little with a marvellous 15 under on the card, it looked as if they would be impossible to catch. They were followed by James Alexander and Mark Weston on minus 11. The final day of Foursomes is a great leveller and Hap Sutherland and Hugh Moleta charged through the field to finish as the winners on minus 22.5 narrowly beating Ken Bloor and Don Campbell on minus 21.2. Not to say, for the ladies, that it was a one horse race, but Maree Southall and Marie Stark led from start to finish. On the first day they carded minus 11, four ahead of the field and completing the event on minus 15.3 ahead of Jean Dillon and Reina Mellor.

“last month, pay wise, was good for me so I can put a bit more money towards that,” said the 28-year-old who last month claimed a share of the $16,500 Toshiba Hastings Pro-Am. “I want to do that for a couple of years so financially I want to be okay,” said Muir, who last month won the $15,500 Horizon Shootout at Manawatu Golf Club. Muir believes some of the hardships golfers have to endure but that won’t deter him. “I’m prepared to do most things to get to where I’m meant to be because sometimes you have to work hard and make sacrifices.” With several New Zealand Order of Merit Tour titles, he didn’t let the strengthening north-easterlies fluster him. Patience was a key factor, said Muir, who saw the tourney here so early in the season as a yardstick for measuring his confidence into the latter stages of the tour. “It’s another opportunity for me to put my systems in place and assess them against other golfers and see where we can go from there.” He was satisfied that he was playing the game between the ears a lot better than previous seasons. “I had a couple of opportunities last year that I didn’t finish off so I’ll get back and have a chat with my coach to make sure I’m heading in the right direction,” said the former Bay of Plenty amateur who last year finished fourth on the NZ Order of Merit.
