Native Son Opens Golf Shop In Hudson “Big Mike” Phillips is a true Florida native, growing up in Odessa and eventually moving to Hudson. At 34 years old, he has spent nearly half his life in the golf business. Out of high school, Mike started in the cart barn and worked his way up to assistant pro at Meadow Oaks Golf Club. He then served as head pro at River Ridge Golf Club for a year. In 2009, Mike began a long association with Steve Pitts and Steve’s World of Golf. He quickly became Steve’s right-hand man helping him execute his vision of a network of pro shops at local golf courses.

During Mike’s tenure, Steve’s World of Golf grew from one to 22 pro shops. By 2015, Mike had out grown his position with Steve’s World of Golf and began a three-year stint with Lennar Homes. However, after a chance meeting with Steve Pitts in early 2018, Mike returned to the golf business with a vengeance. He bought Steve’s store in Hudson and re-opened the renovated shop this past October. As Mike describes it, Big Mike’s House of Golf is a Mom and Pop version of a Golf Galaxy. His goal is to help people enjoy playing golf, not just sell them merchandise.

Seminole Lake Country Club Family-Owned, Old-Florida Golf

In 1911 William Cunningham moved

his family from Fletcher, North Carolina to St Petersburg, Florida and opened a hardware and grocery store on Central Avenue. From the onset they enjoyed success with their business venture. In the early 1930’s, as a result the family’s successful business, William’s son Howard Cunningham, Sr. was able to purchase a 300-acre piece of property west of St. Petersburg. He named it Pine Ridge Farm. Pine Ridge Farm was a working cattle ranch with all of the family members contributing to its operation. For many years the Cunningham family – including Howard’s three sons Gene, Book and Doc Cunningham – enjoyed the farm, which at that time was a long way from their home in the city. ing on the property, the family members used the farm as a getaway. The remnants of the family cabin remain on the property just west of today’s clubhouse. In the early 1960’s, the brothers were approached by a local real estate developer. He convinced them to turn the property into a housing development and country club. So in 1962 Seminole Lake Country Club Estates was born. Shortly after the start of the project, the developer was no longer involved and the Cunningham brothers obtained control of the property. As time went by, the community flourished and the club acquired an excellent reputation as one of the premier country clubs in

Florida, boasting a full membership and an active social events calendar. Arnold Palmer played an exhibition round at Seminole Lake Country Club shortly after the course opened. The club hosted several of the premier events in the Tampa Bay area during this time. Over the next four decades the club remained a successful private club, adding tennis courts, and a swimming pool to enhance its amenities. In 2002, the clubhouse underwent a major renovation. In 2007, golf course renovations were initiated including the resurfacing of all greens, refurbishing the bunkers and adding a complete practice facility. These improvements were very well received by the members. However, membership started

to decline in the wake of the historic 2008 economic downturn. In 2009, the club converted to semi-private status. Since then, Seminole Lake Country Club has become one of the favorites of golfers throughout the Tampa Bay area. Its excellent location, consistently good condition, playability and service level bring golfers back again and again. Coincidentally, membership has grown as well. To this day, the club is still owned by the Cunningham family and maintains a very warm feel just as the three brothers originally intended when the club opened in 1962. It’s all about the set up. There are three fundamentals that even the Tour players go back to when they have issuse. P.G.A. Most people think this means professional golf association. From now on, think: Posture.Grip. Alignment. These are the three fundamentals that will set you up to make an effective and efficient swing. Posture is the basic athletic stance used in most sports. Weight is on the balls of the feet. Tip forward from the hips at about 40-45 degrees Hands hanglike a plumb bob down from the chin and nose, keeping the back as flat as possible. Check yourself in the mirror. Most important in the Grip is soft hands. Placement of the hands determines ball flight, but you won’t get the ball in the air if your hands are too tight. Keep them as soft as if you are holding a baby bird. Tight muscles don’t work properly and that applies to your whole body. Alignment refers to the imamginary line your toes are standing on. For a right handed golfer that line should point LEFT of the target and parallel to the intended ball flight line. maybe you’ve heard the phrase “parallel and left”.The only time this might not apply would be for chipping. If you pay attention to making these 3 fundamentals correct, you will be set up to make an efficient and effective swing. Your best swing can happen with a good set up.

The lie angle, shaft flex, loft of the driver, fairway woods and Hybrids, grip size, and length all need to be right for you. 3. Get regular coaching by taking lessons or clinics. After you get started, get help once or twice a month. I have played golf since I could walk and have loved the game all my life. It is a part of my life. Hope you find the joy in golf that I have.

A very important part of the golf game is developing a routine that stays consistent. If you watch best players in the world you will see them take the same amount of time to play each shot. Golf is a game of repetition. A great example is putting. When the pressure isn’t on to make a crucial putt to win a friendly bet you may take two practice strokes, one look at the hole then stroke the putt. When you are in an event and you have to make this putt your normal routine should not change ie: three practice strokes several looks at the hole etc. If it does your timing has changed and the results may not be as good. So to be more consistent develop a routine but keep it simple. Bad thinking creates bad golf. Enjoy the game life is too short!!!!

When determining which club to choose, most golfers consider distance and wind. But don’t forget the third factor: your LIE! A great lie enables OFFENSE, one may choose high shots for maximum spin or a low shot with predictable contact. But a poor lie requires DEFENSE. Grass can get in between the ball and clubface, so allow for lower ball flight and additional roll. Assess the risk, and if you cannot get to the green in 1 shot, make SURE you can get there in 2. Taking a chance makes golf heroic OR heartbreaking! Choose wisely, and have fun!

Stop Begging for a good golf game and Handshake your way to Great Golf! These two trail palm positions, palm up (begging) or palm rolled to a hand shake, post impact is the deciding factor for poor golf to great fun rounds. If the trail palm points up post impact, your arms will bend too soon causing fat, thin, toed or hozzle rockets. When you extend the trail hand through impact to a hand shake your arms will stay long and extended for consistent impact and predictable shots.

Many golfers get their shoulders involved when they begin to go forward (I can’t say “when they SWING forward” because they are really just carrying the club) and this can ruin the timing and direction of the swing. Observe that you KEEP THE CLUB IN MOTION at the end of the backswing and when you swing forward.

Putt or Chip from the Fringe? Do both! Joey DiPompo, Asst Golf Pro, The Downs Golf

Often times we don’t know if they should putt it or chip it. My solution is to make a putting stoke with a PW or 9 iron. Narrow your stance, place the ball towards your back foot, move your hands forward and make a long putting stroke with your club while leading with your hands. This will help keep the ball low and allow it roll just like a putt. Just remember, contact is key.

Play Backwards

My favorite tip is to intentionally play holes backwards. Focusing on your second shot before teeing off can improve scoring. For instance, if your best shot is a 7-iron from 150 yards, then you need to be hitting from 150 yards as often as possible! See how many times in one round you can take a shot from your strongest position. If you can hit your best shot as often as possible, it can make your round much less stressful.

Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club Completes Major Renovations The summer of 2018 was an exciting time in the history of the Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club. It was a time of major renovations to the course that was constructed in 1989. All 18 greens – and the practice putting green – were renovated with TifEagle Bermuda grass. The overall size of six greens was increased and two other greens were shifted to allow for better turf maintenance. The greens renovation allows for more pin placements on the 3,000 to 4,000 square-foot greens. Other renovations include the addition of Junior Tees, leveling of tee boxes, cutting back of vegetation, and new steps leading to several tee boxes. As one long-time customer stated, Public Course

Valspar Championship Returns March 18-24, 2019

Fresh off an inspiring 2018 tournament, the Valspar Championship is making plans for its return next March. The revised PGA TOUR schedule has placed the tournament two weeks later than last year, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, March 24. Playing before record galleries, Paul Casey shot 65 on Sunday to edge Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed by one shot. The Valspar Championship marked a special moment in the dramatic comeback of Woods to PGA TOUR golf, as he recounted in September,

The President’s Report I would like to thank Chris Slattery (Past President) for his unwavering support these past few years. Chris has done an outstanding job with his leadership and passion for our Chapter and Section. I would also like to give many thanks to Fred Curtis who has been the Chapter’s Tournament Chairman the last two years. He did a fabulous job securing consistently good venues to host a great tournament series. Keith Kulzer is our new Tournament Chairman. We know he will continue elevating our tournament series and building on a really fantastic base. Congratulations to Gary Koch for winning our Chapter and Senior Chapter Championships. Congratulations are also extended to Brian Oliver who is our Chapter Assistant Champion. Great playing gentlemen! Speaking of assistants, a special thank you goes to Zoran Ilic for establishing an Assistant Association with five tournaments with education attached to each. The Chapter created a $500 scholarship to be awarded to a deserving Assistant who met special criteria within the association. It is too early to know the field for the 2019 event, but the organizers at Copperhead Charities are committed to a round of improvements to better accommodate the large galleries. “We are revamping our course entrance process with significant improvements to the power lines area to handle most of our bus arrivals,” says Tournament Director Tracy West. “We also are making a major increase to our central concessions area along the 9th fairway. It will also feature a colorful area with music for afterplay socializing.” Valspar LIVE!, the tournament’s innovative on-site concert, will return for a fifth year.
