Seminole Lake Country Club The Best Golf Value in the Tampa Bay Area
In the early 1930’s, three brothers – Gene,
Book and Doc Cunningham – moved from North Carolina to St Petersburg, Florida and opened a hardware store on Central Avenue. From the onset they enjoyed success with their business venture. As a result they were able to purchase a 300-acre piece of property west of St. Petersburg and named it Pine Ridge Farm. Doc Cunningham was a practicing veterinarian and turned the property into a working ranch while the rest of the family members used it as a getaway. For many years the Cunningham family enjoyed the farm, which at that time was a long way from the city. It took almost a full GolfCoastMagazine.com
day to get from downtown St. Petersburg to the farm. During this time Doc Cunningham opened an office on Park Boulevard across from the farm. In the early 1960’s, the brothers were approached by a local developer who convinced them to turn the property into a housing development and country club. So in 1962 Seminole Lake Country Club Estates was born. Shortly after the start of the project, the developer was no longer involved and the Cunningham brothers obtained control of the property. As time went on, the development flourished and the club acquired an

excellent reputation as one of the premier country clubs in Florida, boasting a full membership and an active social events calendar. Arnold Palmer played an exhibition round at Seminole Lake Country Club shortly after the course opened. The club hosted several of the premier events in the Tampa Bay area during this time. Over the next four decades the club remained a successful private club, adding tennis courts, and a swimming pool to enhance its amenities. In 2002, the clubhouse underwent a major renovation. In 2007, golf course renovations were initiated including the resurfacing of all greens, refurbishing the bunkers and adding a complete practice facility. These improve-

ments were very well received by the members. However, membership started to decline in the wake of the historic 2008 economic downturn. In 2009, the club converted to semi-private status. Since then, Seminole Lake Country Club has become one of the favorites of golfers throughout the Tampa Bay area. Its excellent location, consistently good condition, playability and service level bring golfers back again and again. Coincidentally, membership has grown as well. To this day, the club is still owned by the Cunningham family and maintains a very warm feel just as the three brothers originally intended when the club opened in 1962.

The par-3, 173-yard 16th hole requires a tee shot over water to a green also protected in front by a massive sand bunker. 2016 Valspar Championship Increases Charitable Contributions General Chairman Les Muma recently announced that the 2016 Valspar Championship presented by BB&T generated $2,139,663 in charitable donations – an increase of nearly 20% from last year. Muma, representing Copperhead Charities, Inc. which is the non-profit organizing group of the tournament, made the announcement June 3rd at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, the site of Tampa Bay’s PGA TOUR event. Charl Schwartzel won the event on March 13, as record galleries totaling 105,000 attended during the course of the week. With significantly more local sponsorship, the tournament was able to further increase its charitable footprint. “It seems hard to believe that our tournament was going through an existential crisis less than three years ago,” said Muma. “But Valspar arrived and gave us a great title sponsor, and they are now extended through 2020. We added Pro Links Sports as our management company and under tournament director Tracy West and her staff, we have added new supplemental events like our concerts and new sponsors.“ “Our group, the Copperheads, have never been more focused on contribut-

ing to the overall financial well-being of the tournament which lead to the announcement of increased generated revenues for charity. And that’s the bottom line of why we do this.” The total includes money raised through ticket sales, other tournament proceeds as well as the Birdies for Tampa Bay Charities program. More than 150 area charities benefited from the tournament. The total contribution by Copperhead Charities since 1977 is now more than $36 million. The next Valspar Championship presented by BB&T is scheduled for March 6-12, 2017. Bob VanSweden Wins Third Consecutive Mizuno Club Fitter of the Year Award Bob VanSweden, owner and operator of the Golf Repair Center in St. Petersburg, recently garnered another club fitter of the year award. Again, Mizuno named Bob the Club Fitter of the Year for 2015 for its Southeast Region. Bob has also received two National Club Fitter of the Year awards from TaylorMade (2008, 2011) as well as Regional Club Fitter of the Year awards from Cobra (2002-2004), Titleist (2005) and TaylorMade (2007). The President’s Report 2016 started off with two very successful events for the West Central Chapter. On March 28th, we had 64 players at Lone Palm Country Club for our first Pro-Pro event of the year. Thanks to Head Golf Professional Bryan Moran and his staff for hosting an outstanding tournament and Southern Homes for sponsoring the event. A big thank you also goes out to Keith Martin from Sun Dog for giving each player eyewear and to Andy Bean for speaking at the event. The champions were John Mansfield and Gregory McClimans of Clearwater Country Club. The second Pro-Pro event was April 11th at The Vinoy Golf Club. We had 54 players and would like to thank Director of Golf Randy Mosley and his staff for another great event. mine the length of clubs needed. Using shaft optimization software, Bob then develops shaft options to test. Through trial and error, the best shaft is selected. The correct lie angle is also established. Bob then pulls club heads from each fitting cart, using the correct length shafts with proper lie angle to produce the best performing club for the player’s abilities. The final step is to take hand measurements to determine proper grip size. Bob will then discuss set composition options and estimated cost. Palm Aire Country Club, one of the oldest country clubs in the area is steeped in history, but progressive enough to continue to make history.

Adding the first blind golf national championship played on the west coast of Florida to its playlist is a continuation of the club’s wonderful traditions. After all, Palm Aire is all about legends. Sam Snead won a tournament there in 1960 when it was known as DeSoto Lakes Golf Club. Arnold Palmer, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Ken Venturi were in the field. In 1961, the LPGA Tour rolled into DeSoto Lakes and Hall Of Famer Louise Suggs defeated the likes of Patti Berg, Marlene Hagge and Alice Bauer. Last fall, Nancy Lopez led an American team of LPGA golf legends against an International team in the 10th anniversary of the Handa Cup. And now September 30-October 2, 2016, the U.S. Blind Golf Association National Championship will bring a talented group of blind golfers and their coaches to the country club. The story of the USBGA is also rich in history. In 1946, a handful of totally blind men, primarily World War II veterans gathered in California. Their purpose was to play some competitive

rounds of golf. More startling was they were playing according to the Rules of Golf. Though golf is an individual sport, blind golf is a team sport where every blind golfer has alongside him a partner, often referred to as a coach. The coach assists a blind golfer in addressing the ball and with alignment and distance prior to the stroke. A coach has the same status under the Rules as a caddie. Those first competitive rounds became an annual event and 71 years later the national championship is as important as the first round. Three golfers have dominated the championships: Pat Browne, Jr. of Louisiana took first place 23 times, Charley Boswell won 16 times and Joe Lazaro won seven times. Pat Browne, Jr., will be honored at Palm Aire. Now in his 80’s, he is regarded as the USBGA’s international ambassador and a beacon of encouragement for all blind golfers. The National Championship trophy presented at the event will be renamed for him and forever be known as the Pat Browne, Jr. Trophy. “I consider myself so blessed to be able to say that my dad is truly my hero,” said Pat Browne III. “While I am certainly proud that he has accomplished more than any other blind golfer in history, my true admiration for him stems more
from the quality of man that he is off the golf course. When he lost his sight in 1966, he was in the prime of his life. It would have been so easy for him to feel sorry for himself and to give up all sense of hope for a meaningful future. Instead, he chose to strengthen his faith in God and to keep moving forward with a contagious smile on his face. Through his competitive spirit and courageous effort, he turned what appeared to be a tragic situation into an opportunity to inspire others to persevere, no matter the odds. His story has impacted countless lives in a positive manner and for this, I am most proud of him.” “Our entire family is thrilled to learn that the United States Blind Golf Association has chosen to name their most prestigious trophy after my father. This is an honor about which my dad is so excited. He has always viewed the blind golf community as an extension of his family and to have his colleagues place his name on a lasting piece of history is the greatest honor that he could ever receive.” Pat Browne’s career highlights include: • Rounds of 75,74,79,75 in 1980 at Mission Hills Golf Club, Palm Springs, Calif., which is the lowest four consecutive rounds ever by a totally blind golfer; • Scored an 85 in 1979 at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, with a 40 on the back nine; • Carded a 36 in 1982 on the back nine at Bryan

Over the years, the USBGA has gathered a bevy of famous golf courses and celebrities to support its efforts. Friends of blind golf include Bob Hope, Clint Eastwood, HRH Prince Andrew and former President Gerald Ford. In 1990, Payne Stewart donned a blindfold and played nine holes in a charity pro-am with Pat Browne Jr., who was at the time, the 12-time defending U.S. Blind Golf Association national champion. Stewart shot 60, while Browne fired a 42. PGA Tour Player and World Golf Hall of Fame member Ken Venturi dedicated one week each year for 25 years to “my friends the blind golfers.” More recently, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has become the celebrity host for the Guiding Eyes Classic and has been involved with many successful fundraisers for the USBGA.

Palm Aire joins a prestigious list of courses for hosting tournaments such as Mission Hills, The Riviera Club, Firestone CC, Wentworth in England, and the Disney World’s Lake Buena Vista Course. The USBGA consists of golfers who are visually impaired and has three levels of competition: B-1 --- No light perception, or light perception which is not functional; B-2 --- The ability to recognize the shape of a hand up to visual acuity of 20/600; B-3 --- Visual acuity above 20/600 to less than 20/200. The USBGA is a recognized 501 c-3, non-profit association. In 1998, the International Blind Golf Association (IBGA,) was organized and funded by Japanese entrepreneur Dr. Hirahusa Handa. The USBGA was one of six founding members. The IBGA has grown and expanded to include 15 member countries and three associate member countries. The IBGA supports the biennial World championships and an annual World Open. In addition to tournaments, the USBGA sponsors clinics for blind and visually impaired children throughout the country. The public is welcome to attend, Saturday and Sunday Oct. 1-2. The Pro-Am is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 30, followed by a banquet dinner. Sponsorship opportunities and Pro-Am spots are available. Tatum Ridge Golf Links is a Scottish-style links course complemented by preserved wetlands and 11 lakes in a natural setting, with plenty of wild life and nature at its best. Where is this golf hole?
On May 1, 2016, The Classics Country Club closed its golf course to re-grass the fairways, rough, tee boxes and practice facilities. In addition, upgrades are being made to the current layout with additional irrigation, extensive tree work and tee box expansions. The existing greens (which are only 2 years old) are in excellent shape so they will not focus any attention on the greens. The Classics is scheduled to re-open in October. In making a final determination of the specific turf(s) to re-grass the course, both the management team and the Advisory Board of Governors went to an Open House at Bethel Sod Farms in Arcadia, FL to get a firsthand view of the various grasses available. After much consideration regarding the specific turf to use, it was eventually decided to use two turfs - “Celebration” for the fairways and “Bimini” for the rough. While Celebration is an excellent fairway grass, Bimini was chosen for the roughs because it can be cut at higher lengths than Celebration to give the course much more definition. “With this combination of turf-grasses, we will create some of the best fairways and rough in the area” says Lely Regional Manager, David Leverant. “Overall, the topography of the course itself will not change; however we will enlarge, laserlevel and widen some of the tee boxes. We will also add some waste bunkers and enhance some existing bunkers on specific holes” he added.

The logistics of a project of this size and scope are oftentimes dizzying because over 100 acres of property will be re-grassed. But with the Director of Golf Course Maintenance, Trent Compton at the helm, the project is off to an excellent start with a planned grand re-opening in October. In the meantime, Compton is also responsible for maintaining Lely’s two Resort courses while also overseeing The Classics project. The great news is that although the total renovation is expensive - it happens at no cost / no assessment to the members, as The Classics is just one of a small hand ful of private clubs in SWFL that guarantees Members no assessments. While The Classics is closed, the management team continues to drive summer golf play offering a Reciprocal Season Construction special of just $27 for golf and lunch for Classics Members and $42 for area Reciprocals at both the Mustang and Flamingo. In addition, a Summer Golf Membership is available for the Resort Courses (Mustang and Flamingo). The golf course creatively incorporates all the natural features of the terrain. There is plenty of water throughout the course as well as strategically placed bunkers. The layout features short, risk-reward par 4s, the most notable being the 5th and 14th holes. The immaculately groomed course is just shy of 7,000 yards, offering holes that are wide open for the long hitters, but challenging on the greens. There are very few forced carries, the greens are medium to large typically with open fronts that will allow golfers to run the ball onto the green. Old Corkscrew Golf Club Old Corkscrew is pure golf – no residential homes surround the 18-hole Nicklaus Signature designed golf course. Located on Corkscrew Road between Fort Myers and Naples on 275-acre magnificently wooded acres, the course is carved from the natural terrain of native oaks, towering slash pines and native vegetation. The par-72 championship golf course is the only Signature Nicklaus Design non-residential course in Southwest Florida. The Championship layout plays 7,400 yards. Each Nicklaus-designed course is unique, but certain aspects are present in all of them. – well-balanced holes that vary in direction, look and feel, so that one type of golfer isn’t favored over another and a layout that rewards golfers who make careful club selections. Mike Calbot, better known as Southwest Florida’s Golf Doctor, relocated his International Golf Studio and TRIAD Golf Schools to Old Corkscrew. Calbot has more than 38 years of teaching experience and has been giving golf lessons in Southwest Florida since 1978.
