Fox Hollow Golf Club This Tampa Bay Favorite is Now Recognized as One of Florida’s Best
Fox Hollow Golf Club is one of the premier
golf courses in the state and was recently rated 57th by Golf Digest’s Top 75 Courses Accessible to the Public in Florida. Purchased by the Creighton family two and a half years ago, one of their goals was to take the course to a higher level by upgrading course conditions and constantly making improvements. Dave Creighton Sr. has owned and operated several courses in Florida starting with Northdale Golf Club from 1980 to 2000. Other courses include Rosemont, Kissimmee, Celebration, Countryway, Lexington Oaks and now Fox Hollow. GolfCoastMagazine.com
Dave Sr. had a 21-year professional hockey career including 11 seasons in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Black Hawks and New York Rangers. Son Adam followed his dad’s path into professional hockey with a 14-year NHL career, including two years with the Tampa Bay Lightning (1992/93 and (1993/94). Dave’s other son Dave Jr. is an accomplished PGA golf professional. He has spent his career managing the family’s golf course properties. When the Creightons purchased Fox Hollow in August of 2013 they immediately started

upgrading the facility. New machinery was purchased for golf course maintenance and different maintenance practices were followed to ensure that the golf course is always in great condition. The restaurant and banquet room also went through a facelift and were upgraded with new furniture and décor in 2014. Opening in 1994, the Fox Hollow golf course has the distinction of being one of the last courses designed and built by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., one of the most prolific and innovative golf course designers of all time. In his design of Fox Hollow, the legendary Jones created a layout as

picturesque as it is playable. Quite simply, Fox Hollow offers a good, fair test of golf. The par-71 championship layout features five sets of tees and offers new challenges every time it’s played, mixing native trees and vegetation, sparkling lakes, sand bunkers and a variety of wildlife. Fox Hollow’s rolling fairways are a delightful departure from the pancake-flat layouts found elsewhere in Florida. The putting surfaces at Fox Hollow feature SeaDwarf Paspalum, a hearty turfgrass that can be irrigated with effluent, reclaimed, or even seawater. This grass also has the ability to deliver fast green speeds (9+ on

2016 Valspar Championship Presented by BB&T Coming To Innisbrook Jordan Spieth, now the world’s top-ranked golfer, will return to defend his title in the 2016 Valspar Championship presented by BB&T that brings the PGA TOUR back to the Tampa Bay area on March 6-13 on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor. Spieth prevailed in a thrilling three-hole playoff over Patrick Reed and Sean O’Hair for the first of the five victories (including the Masters, U.S. Open and TOUR Championship) that marked one of the best seasons in PGA TOUR history. O’Hair and Reed will return as will Henrik Stenson who finished one shot out of the playoff. Recent past champions like Luke Donald, K.J. Choi and Gary Woodland will also be in the field, as will Brandt Snedeker, Jason Dufner, Martin Kaymer and Hunter Mahan. In addition to the quality golf action, the Valspar Championship will feature another Valspar LIVE! concert with Rascal Flatts on Thursday night, special hospitality options including the Hooters Owl’s Nest at the 12th green, an expanded Jabil Family Fun Zone presented by Pub-

Rick Bradshaw’s Legacy PGA Professional Rick Bradshaw – a golf instructor for more than 35 years whose list of students included PGA Tour, Senior PGA Tour, PGA professionals, college level golfers, and thousands of amateur golfers – died Sunday, January 24th, from complications of cancer. Rick was extremely devoted to his family, and will be sincerely missed by his wife Marion, daughters Nicole and Brittany, and his twin brother Rob. He was 66. Rick was the Director of Instruction of the Jim Dent & Rick Bradshaw School of Golf for over 20 years, and General Manager of Heritage Isles Golf and Country Club in Tampa. He conducted over 100,000 golf lessons, invented several training aids along the way, and appeared in nine instructional golf videos. A native of Philadelphia, PA, Rick was an excellent athlete, playing both baseball and football at Westchester State College in PA. With a 97 MPH fastball, he had major league potential before injuries hindered his prospects. He applied his knowledge of the physics of sports to golf instruction. He was successful at keeping the complexity of a difficult game simple and was highly successful at creating a positive learning environment by con-
necting with his students’ learning styles. Rick was a two-time recipient of the North Florida PGA Teacher of the Year Award, and recipient of numerous other PGA Section and Chapter awards for his contributions to the game and service to fellow PGA professionals. Most recently, he was the West Central Chapter’s 2015 Horton Smith Award and 2015 Youth Player Development Award winner. He was also a four-time guest instructor on Golf Channel’s “Golf Academy Live”. Rick had a vast library of instructional literature, but the foundation of his teaching stemmed from classic golf instructor Percy Boomer’s “On Learning Golf ”. Some consider this one of the most influential instructional books of all time. Rick was one of the foremost instructors of Percy’s philosophy of using simple analogies and teaching through “feel.” “When individuals ask for my assistance on continued

Lely Resort in Naples offers 54 holes of golf on three championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Gary Player, and Lee Trevino - representing the most diverse and extensive variety of worldclass golf of it’s kind on the Gulf Coast. The resort is set in an upscale residential community that offers a variety of neighborhoods and social amenities with memberships available that include golf, tennis, and a variety of lifestyle activities. The Players Club & Spa for members features steam rooms, saunas, massage therapy, a state-of-the-art fitness facility with cardio and free weight work out areas, aerobics room, fitness/lap pool, outdoor pool and spa. But you don’t have to be a member to play golf there. Two courses are open for public play. The 7,230 yard Lee Trevino designed Mustang, and the 7,095 yard Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed Flamingo Island Course. The Mustang is a player-friendly layout featuring generous fairways and landing areas with 12 lakes adding challenge and aesthetic beauty, and is rated 4 1/2 stars (out of 5) by Golf Digest Places to Play. The golf course creatively incorporates all the natural features of the terrain. There is plenty of water throughout the course as well as strategically placed bunkers. The layout features short, risk-reward par 4s, the most notable being the 5th and 14th holes. Old Corkscrew Golf Club Old Corkscrew is pure golf – no residential homes surround the 18-hole Nicklaus Signature designed golf course. Located on Corkscrew Road between Fort Myers and Naples on 275-acre magnificently wooded acres, the course is carved from the natural terrain of native oaks, towering slash pines and native vegetation. The par-72 championship golf course is the only Signature Nicklaus Design non-residential course in Southwest Florida. The Championship layout plays 7,400 yards. Each Nicklaus-designed course is unique, but certain aspects are present in all of them. – well-balanced holes that vary in direction, look and feel, so that one type of golfer isn’t favored over another and a layout that rewards golfers who make careful club selections.
