Quail Creek Country Club to Host the 31st U.S. Women’s MidAmateur Championship The First Ever USGA Event Held in Collier County October 7 – 12, 2017 In the early ‘80’s, Quail Creek Country Club (QCCC) became one of the first clubs in the Naples area to offer a full country club atmosphere, including 36 holes of golf. Now, QCCC will be the first country club in Collier County to host a United States Golf Association (USGA) championship, the 31st U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur to be held October 7-12, 2017.

“We are so proud to host the first USGA championship event in Naples,” said Don Hunter, General Chairman. “On behalf of the membership of Quail Creek Country Club, we are honored to host the 31st U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Hosting this tournament at QCCC is a testament to the championship caliber of our Club and courses.” QCCC features two 18-hole courses, named Quail and Creek, that will be used for the strokeplay qualifying and the match-play portion of the championship. Both courses were designed in 1981 by Arthur Hills, who also renovated Oakmont, P.A. Country Club, host site of the 2016 U.S. Open. The courses were renovated in 2013 by Kevin F. Leo, QCCC’s Golf Course Superintendent, with Hills serving as a consultant. Renovations included an increase in playable native areas that has reduced the amount of water, fertilizer and maintenance required; the restoration of bermudagrass throughout the course; and the addition and restoration of bunkers. The club has hosted numerous state and regional events. Julia Potter is the defending champion and will be competing to win her third title. “I love the women that play in this event

and what this event stands for. It’s a lot of working women or mothers, that type of golfer. So, that always gets me pumped for it,” said Potter, Indianapolis, I.N. native. Potter has previously won both of her Women’s Mid-Amateurs on Ross classics – last year at The Kahkwa Club, in Eerie, P.A. and in 2013, it was at Biltmore Forest Country Club, in Asheville, N.C. Kim Benedict, of Bonita Springs, will also be competing. “I’m thrilled that QCCC is hosting the 2017 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. It’s an excellent pairing of a great championship and QCCC’s great courses. I’ll be practicing hard to make sure I’m ready to compete in October,” said Benedict, 35, Gulf Coast High school golf coach and QCCC Member. “The facilities at QCCC, including the new Short Game Range, allow me to work on a multitude of shots, especially wedge and short game shots and I hope to take my game to the next level with continued focus in these areas,” said Benedict. In late 2014, Tom Dempsey, Saddlebrook’s owner, was very disappointed in the condition of his golf courses and new practice facility. He decided it was time to invest whatever it took to bring both golf courses and the new Saddlebrook Golf Academy Practice Facility up to International Standards. In early 2015, Chip Lewiston was hired as Golf Course Manager. Chip is very experienced at bringing distressed golf courses back to “International Standards”. He also has a true desire to help turn things around at Saddlebrook. Course conditions in 2015 were an issue not only to resort guests, but also to the Saddlebrook Golf Academy. To attract guests and especially golf students, the courses needed to be at the highest standards. Discussion, planning, and prioritizing between manager and owner developed an overall strategy. The goal was to vastly improve the two golf courses and practice facility and achieve exceptional conditioning throughout the year. Since the beginning of 2016, steady progress has been made. A problem many amateur golfers have, is hitting behind the ball too much. Their club digs into the ground an inch or two before contacting the ball, resulting in the ‘fat’ shot. Most golfers would be quick to say; “you picked your head up again!” I’ll bet you’ve said that too haven’t you? Picking your head up is NOT the cause of your fat shots, and doesn’t make sense either. Why would you dig down too deep if your head went UP? I’d think you’d top the ball if your head went up. Photo #1 shows my student Ashley doing what actually causes the fat shot in most cases. During her backswing her legs have swayed back too much. As she swung back, her legs also moved back too much. This will make her hit behind the ball coming down. She moved back too much so she’ll hit back too much. It’s as simple as that.

With a solid base on your backswing you’ll eliminate the fat shots and you’ll also be able to drive into the ball better coming down giving you more distance and accuracy too. Summerfield Crossings Golf Club, located in Riverview, Florida, is owned and operated by the Blanchard family, specifically Jeffrey “Doc” Blanchard and his son Jason. Their backstory is as interesting as it gets.

Jason grew up in Rochester, New York where his father was a successful optometrist. After graduating from Boston University, Jason tried his hand at bond trading but eventually opted for a career in golf. He has been a PGA Professional since 1994. Meanwhile, Jason’s father retired in Tampa, Florida in 2000. At the time, GolfCoastMagazine.com

Jason was director of golf at Glen Eagles Golf Club in Del Ray Beach, on Florida’s east coast. In 2002, the elder Blanchard suggested – out of the blue – that the family buy a golf course. The rest is history. On February 28, 2003, the Blanchard family assumed ownership and operation of Summerfield Crossings Golf Club. With Doc working behind the scenes and Jason serving as general manager, Summerfield Crossings has carved out a hard-earned niche in the evervolatile golf business in Florida. “We’re the perfect blue collar golf course,”

says Jason. “We’ve created a “Cheers” mentality where everyone feels at home, including our staff and customers.” The atmosphere may be relaxed but the facilities are all first class, beginning with the golf course. The par-71 championship course opened in 1987. Designed by renowned architect Ron Garl, the original concept was to create a links-style course. However, with the planting of over 1200 pine trees early in its history, the course has evolved into a combination of links-style and tree-lined holes. The course distinguishes itself with scenic, rolling terrain, numerous pot bunkers and small, undulating greens.

“Our design philosophy for Summerfield Crossings was to enhance and utilize the existing terrain – including the strategic location of bunkers to offer options and challenges for all levels of players as is found on many great courses in Scotland,” said Garl. You can play the course as hard or as easy as you want. At over 6900 yards from the tips, Summerfield Crossings will challenge even the most skilled players. The forward tees are friendlier to less accomplished players but still require plenty of demanding shots to score well. Hole number 15 – Summerfield

Crossings’ Signature Hole – is a gutcheck par 3 featuring an island green reminiscent of the famed 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, home of the PGA Tour’s Players Championship. Measuring anywhere from 138 to 171 yards, this short hole strikes fear into the hearts of the most accomplished players. Summerfield Crossings’ practice facilities are extensive, including a twotiered driving range, expansive putting green, chipping green and dedicated bunker area. There’s also a short shot area with targets in the 30 to 40 yard range, ideal for developing touch with your wedges. The clubhouse features a well-stocked pro shop and Doc’s Grille, a full-service restaurant that comfortably seats 160 people.
