TO THE 2020 FOOTBALL SEASON>>> DEAR FOOTBALL FANS, Welcome back to Foxes’ football! We have all been anxiously waiting for the season to begin and are more than ready for the return of school sports. As we look forward to a successful fall sports season, it’s always great to be able to look back at last season and remember that our Foxes’ football team advanced to the WPIAL 5A playoffs for the second time in three years. This was a great accomplishment that we hope to repeat this year!

I also want to note how proud I am of our athletes who continued to stay in top form, despite not being able to conduct team and organized workouts at times due to COVID-19. Although they couldn’t always be together, our athletes continued to work hard to be ready for this fall sports season.

No matter what the effort – whether it’s on the field or in the unprecedented environment we are now living in – success is always the result of many people working toward a common goal. I have been encouraged by what I have witnessed so far, and am grateful that our athletes, coaches, district staff, parents, and community are working and continue to work diligently to be the best that they can be. Although we were not able to have a spring sports season last school year, we did complete the fall and winter seasons and they resulted in some fantastic results. We had three state champions, one state runner-up, and, among all teams and individuals, 18 of them advanced to the PIAA playoffs. Also, we had four W PIAL champions, 14 teams went to the WPIAL playoffs, and six teams were section champs. Those great achievements, along with many others, earned our program the runnerup position in the 2019-2020 Class 6A Trib HSSN (High School Sports Network) Sports Cup challenge. The year before, we placed seventh.

>>A MESSAGE FROM THE FOOTBALL HEAD COACH DEAR FOXES’ FOOTBALL FANS AND FRIENDS,
Welcome to the 2020 Foxes football season! While we always look forward to getting back on the field each year, this time it is with even more enthusiasm. We have a lot of anticipation about reuniting as a team and playing ball again. In this unprecedented environment of COVID-19, we view the changes and adjustments set forth by the PIAA, the district, and the governor, not as overwhelming obstacles, but as something we accept as simply one more challenge to overcome. Each year, coaches must be prepared to accept the unknown and do things differently with a positive attitude. Even when there is not a pandemic, we must find new ways to teach and utilize the players that we have, compensate for those who have graduated, and adjust the playbook to best meet our strengths as a team. While sometimes we might not like the cards we’ve been dealt, we strive to accept them in a manner that results in pride and success.
I can assure you that amid this uncertain environment, my staff and I remain totally committed to our players and this team. We always take seriously our responsibility to teach our players the skills and concepts that are of benefit on the field and life in general – respect, character, and teamwork – and we will continue to do so. Finally, I would like to express my sincere thanks to a number of different groups. Thank you to the players who, under difficult circumstances, persevered with their creative off season training at home. Thank you to the boosters club and parents for all of the planning that has gone into supporting the team, both in spirit and financially. I would also like to thank Mike O’Brien and the school’s administration for their hard work in putting together a well-thought-out, comprehensive plan to get sports going again after the disappointment of having to cancel the spring sports season. We can’t wait to get the football season started! GO FOXES!

Tom Loughran >> VARSITY HEAD COACH TOM LOUGHRAN IS ENTERING HIS FIFTH YEAR AS THE HEAD COACH OF THE FOX CHAPEL AREA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM. Tom’s coaching tenure began at his alma mater, Central Catholic High School. After two years as an assistant coach at Central, he joined the staff as an assistant at Penn Hills High School, where the program won three WPIAL championships during his five years there. Coach Loughran then spent one season coaching the offensive line at Duquesne University before beginning a long, distinguished career as a math teacher and the head football coach at South Park High School. During his more than 30 years at South Park, he coached his teams to three undefeated regular seasons; two teams won the Class AA Century Conference and WPIAL championships, and his 1997 and 2005 teams were PIAA champions. HIS OVERALL CAREER RECORD AS A HEAD COACH IS 197-160-4. Coach Loughran’s leadership and expertise have earned him numerous awards. He was inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Tri-County Coaches Association Hall of Fame and was named the head coach for their 2013 all-star game. He was also selected to be the head coach of the Pennsylvania team in the 50th annual Big 33 game against Ohio’s all-star team. Both teams were victorious in their respective competitions. Tom has been named Coach of the Year a remarkable 13 times, including twice each by the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association and the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. The Steelers named him the WPIAL Class AA Coach of the Year following one of his state championships, the Associated Press named him Coach of the Year twice, and he was a four-time winner in the WPIAL AA Century Conference. Additionally, the Eastern Chapter of the Football Officials Association previously named Tom as their Coach of the Year. At the culmination of the 2005 season, he was honored as a “Pittsburgh Legend” by the Pittsburgh chapter of the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Loughran is a native of the Greenfield section of Pittsburgh and earned a degree in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University. He and his wife, Deneen, have two grown sons; Thomas and Patrick. They also have three young grandchildren; Ella,Conall T, and Brynn.
