Tales of Resilience V is a solo exhibition by Zimbabwean photographer Calvin Dondo. Images were taken over a twenty year period and focuses on the Tonga people - in particularly the effects of the forced removal from their ancestral land to make way for the construction of the Kariba Dam in 1956. According to the artist: “The Dam was built to host a hydroelectric power plant to provide electricity for Zambia and Zimbabwe. Its construction divided the Tonga community, and currently you find these people located on the Zambia and Zimbabwean sides of the Zambezi River. Despite this, the Tonga people have been able to remain united and have been steadfast in their resistance to foreign cultural proliferation: keeping their spiritual connection to their traditions and customs, which is maintained through ceremonies, festivals and strong family ties.” The project is in its fifth public iteration; previous iterations included workshop and exhibitions. Calvin Dondo is a graduate of the GoetheInstitut’s Photographers’ Master Classes, in which he participated from 2008-2010.

LITERARY CROSSROADS

09/02/2016 19H00 GOETHE-INSTITUT, 119 JAN SMUTS AVENUE, PARKWOOD 2193 Topic: Rewriting South African Landscapes Guests: Zakes Mda (South Africa) and Nakhane Touré (South Africa)

The Humboldt Forum is currently one of the most ambitious cultural projects in Europe. Situated in the historical heart of Berlin, right opposite the Isle of Museums, which provides a large range of European cultural offerings, the Humboldt Forum aims to be a centre for “non-European” cultures. When the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace started, Berlin already housed a considerable ethnological collection, library and archive holdings as well as research capacities. The Humboldt Forum aims to integrate these non-European collections and engage with them from a

contemporary point of view. The variety and different aspects of the regions which are represented in the ethnological collection will be incorporated in the concept: Africa, Asia, the Pacific as well as North and South America. Therefore, the planners and designers of the Humboldt Forum would like to engage with experts from these regions to ensure an open concept that includes the different regions’ perspectives. During the panel discussion, President of the British Museum and Foundation Director of the Humboldt Forum Neil MacGregor and President of the Goethe-Institut Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Lehmann will elaborate on the Humboldt Forum and engage with African intellectuals, museum directors and the public on its concept.

FILM SCREENING

JACOB THE LIAR

17/02/2016 18H30 GOETHE-INSTITUT, 119 JAN SMUTS AVENUE, PARKWOOD, 2193 Trapped in a Polish ghetto with thousands of other Jews facing starvation or deportation to the death camps, Jacob is detained one evening at Gestapo headquarters. Eavesdropping, he overhears a radio report about a nearby Russian victory. At first he is silent, but circumstances compel him to pass on the good news of hope. In order to be believed, he feigns access to a hidden, strictly forbidden radio. Quickly he becomes a oneman bulwark against despair, a reluctant hero, but a tragic figure still – man ultimately powerless to see or change the fate of his people.

TRAIN THE TRAINER: METHODS OF TEACHING GERMAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

09/01/2015 – 16/01/2016 GOETHE-INSTITUT BERLIN For the past two years, the Goethe-Institut South Africa has provided an intensive blended-learning training course for 6 “multipliers” – teachers of German, who wanted to update their knowledge in methods of teaching German as a foreign language. After finishing six units of the newly established “Deutsch lehren lernen” (learn how to teach German) series of the Goethe-Institut, they will now complete their program with a “train the trainer” workshop in Berlin. The newly acquired knowledge will enable them to facilitate teacher training workshops in South Africa.

ARTS EDUCATION

ARTUCATION PROGRAMME

ONGOING Artucation is an arts education programme facilitated by Puleng Plessie which takes place every Wednesday. It involves high-school learners using multidisciplinary spaces as a starting point to initiate dialogues which comment on learners’ social, political and personal environment. They talk about art and begin to unpack and translate themes in their own interpretation. These discussions continue beyond these multidisciplinary spaces into the classroom. In this way, the Artucation programme starts to become an “art class outside of class” and a youth platform for expressive intervention in arts education. This year Artucation will take it a step further by having various collaborations with Film-, Visual Arts-, and Applied Drama Facilitators and School teachers.
