2017 APPALACHIAN APPALACHIAN STATE 2017 STATEVOLLEYBALL VOLLEYBALL HEAD COACH MATT GINIPRO

COACHES AND STAFF

MATT GINIPRO HEAD COACH 11TH SEASON VIRGINIA TECH, 1993

Matt Ginipro became the eighth volleyball head coach in Appalachian State University volleyball history on June 2, 2007 and has seen a vast amount of success in his 10 seasons in the High Country, including a successful transition to the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. During his tenure with the Mountaineers, he has posted 152 victories, including 60 in Southern Conference play and 26 in three Sun Belt Conference seasons – Ginipro has won the fourth-highest number of matches in Appalachian State coaching history. The Black and Gold bounced back during the spring of 2017 with productive play against several “Power 5” schools in preparation for the 2017 season. The 2017 recruiting class was ranked by PrepVolleyball.com as “Highest Honorable Mention” during their series on the top recruiting classes in the country. App State was ranked in that category with 24 other schools. Graduating four highly contributing seniors combined with being decimated by injuries plagued the Mountaineers’ 2016 season from the get-go, but that didn’t stop a rising freshman and sophomore class from beginning to stamp their mark on the program. Under Ginipro, freshman Emma Longley earned multiple Sun Belt Player of the Week honors and posted two 30+ kill matches, including a program record 37 kills against Ball State. Coming off of a stellar 2014 season, Ginipro guided the Mountaineers to an ultra-impressive 2015 campaign that saw the program soar to 22 victories and finish second in league play during the regular season, including a trip to the Sun Belt tournament title match against Arkansas State. Throughout the year, App State matched its program record 16-match winning streak, finishing with 22 victories, including 13 in conference play. After posting 21 wins in 2014, the back-to-back 20-win campaigns were the first since the 2005-06 seasons. Taking the program to new heights in 2015 also brought many individual accomplishments. Senior outside hitter Jess Keller was named Sun Belt Offensive Student-Athlete of the Year, while senior Emily Corrigan and junior Ashton Gregory - along with Keller - earned first team all-conference honors. Corrigan will finish second all time in career kills with 1,399 and Keller ended up cracking the top ten and sits 10th with 1,210. Senior setter Paige Brown recorded a career-high 65 assists in her final match and ended her career as the all time program assist leader with 4,478. Senior libero Meghan Mahoney also finished her career atop the Mountaineer record books and finished second in career digs with 1,855. The 2014 season was a historic one for the Mountaineers. App state opened the season with 13 consecutive victories, including a top-25 win over a 24th ranked Louisville Cardinal opponent en route to a tournament win at Louisville. Appalachian finished 21-10 overall, it’s best finish under Ginipro, while also finished 11-9 in the Sun Belt Conference. Setter Paige Brown won Sun Belt Setter of the Year after earning Setter of the Week six times. Emily Corrigan earned a first-team allconference nod after leading the Apps in kills and earning Offensive Player of the Week three times. COACHING EXPERIENCE: 2007- present 2000-2007 1999 1996-1999

The Mountaineers reached the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament three times during Ginipro’s tenure, most recently in 2013 (the program’s last in the SoCon) when the squad finished 19-13 and 9-7 in league play. He has coached seven players to all-SoCon honors and saw one of his student-athletes, Brittany Zahn, named as the 2007 SoCon Player of the Year. In just his first year at the helm, Ginipro earned SoCon Coach of the Year honors for guiding his squad to a 14-4 league record and an appearance in the semifinal round of the 2007 SoCon Tournament. During his time in the High Country, Ginipro has seen two of his players set school records. Dianna Thomas ended her career as Appalachian’s all-time kills leader in 2007 while Courtney Rhein broke the school record for digs during the 2012 season.

2017 APPALACHIAN STATE VOLLEYBALL HEAD COACH MATT GINIPRO

In addition to his team’s success on the court, Ginipro’s squads have been highly successful in the classroom. During his tenure, Ginipro has seen two players (Dianna Thomas and Maggie Seeds) earn first-team Capital One/CoSIDA academic all-district honors. Ginipro arrived in Boone with 12 years of collegiate coaching experience under his belt after serving as the first assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Virginia for six years. In March of 2007, he was promoted to associate head coach at UVa. At Virginia, Ginipro was responsible for coaching the Cavaliers’ setters and outside hitters and served as the program’s recruiting coordinator. During his six seasons at UVa., the team went a combined 105-82 and posted 19-plus win seasons in his final four years. His 2006 squad finished second in the ACC with a school-record 16 conference wins at 16-6 and posted a 23-8 overall record as Ginipro’s 2007 recruiting class earned Highest Honorable Mention ranking from PrepVolleyball.com.

COACHES AND STAFF

His program’s efforts have not gone unnoticed on the recruiting trail either, as his 2010, 2011 and 2013 recruiting classes were ranked among one of the nation’s best, earning an honorable mention among top recruiting classes in the country from PrepVolleyball.com.

Ginipro joined the Virginia coaching staff in May of 2001 after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Mississippi during the 2000 season. At Mississippi, Ginipro was responsible for coaching the outside hitters and primary passers, as well as serving as the recruiting coordinator. He helped Ole Miss earn one of eight spots in the SEC tournament after the team won only one conference match during the 1999 season. Prior to coaching at Ole Miss, Ginipro spent four years as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, serving as the first assistant coach for the 1997, 1998 and 1999 seasons. His duties included coaching the setters, right-side hitters, recruiting and coordinating the team’s offense. Ginipro graduated from Virginia Tech in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in sociology. He earned a master’s in counselor education from Radford in 1996. Ginipro was a member of Virginia Tech’s men’s club volleyball team and served as captain and coach for three seasons. He helped lead the Hokies to the 1992 and 1993 Collegiate Club Championships as the starting setter. A native of Smithtown, N.Y., Ginipro is married to the former Roxanne Furey of Blacksburg, Va. The couple has two children, Kirsten Nicole and Nicholas Kyle.

On the court Willis is primarily in charge of training the outside and middle hitters and coordinating the Mountaineer offense. In his first three seasons, the Black and Gold saw tremendous growth offensively. Willis also serves as Appalachian’s recruiting coordinator. With a solid network of contacts across the country, the Mountaineers have landed talented student-athletes, including this year’s 2017 class being tabbed by PrepVolleyball as highest honorable mention for the nation’s top recruiting class. On the court, Sherwin is primarily in charge of training the setters and assists in coordinating the Mountaineer offense. Sherwin also plays a pivotal role in recruiting. Appalachian’s 2017 class was tabbed by PrepVolleyball as highest honorable mention for the nation’s top recruiting class. Prior to her arrival in Minneapolis, Sherwin completed a four-year playing career at Ohio State University. In her final year with the Buckeyes, Sherwin was a 2014 AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) All-America honorable mention after a Sweet 16 NCAA run. HISTORY AND RECORDS

TRACI BLANKENSHIP

Traci Blankenship became the only Mountaineer volleyball player to have her uniform No. 9 retired on November 4, 1985. The recognition is a special one at Appalachian, as Blankenship is one of only five student-athletes in App State history to have their number retired. A standout player, she garnered all-Southern Conference acclaim all four seasons. She received first-team all-league plaudits her final three campaigns, and was an all-SoCon Tournament selection all four years. Blankenship was named Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year in 1982, ‘83 and ‘85. She was the Mountaineers’ team MVP as a junior and senior and the Appalachian State Athlete-of-theYear for the 1984-85 academic year. She earned USVBA Regionals Most Valuable Player accolades in 1984.

A fine all-around player Blankenship set school single-season records in digs and service aces. She still ranks among the program’s all-time top leaders in several categories including an Appalachian record 937 career digs. A handful of years beyond her final match, Blankenship’s impressive career continued to collect her plaudits. Following the 1989 season she was named to both the App State allDecade team as well as to Blankenship spoke at the Southern Conference Women’s 25th Anniversary Banquet at the 2008 SoCon basketball tournament. the Southern Conference all-decade team. She finished with a record of 79-72 as head coach of the Mountaineers. Her legacy of excellence continued on following her departure from her alma mater. The program won three regular-season and two tournament championships over the next four years. On September 5, 1998, Blankenship was one of three inducted in to the Appalachian State Athletic Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame presented the plaudit before a crowd of more than 13,000 at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

2017 APPALACHIAN STATE VOLLEYBALL STEFANIE PANZER AND BRITTANY ZAHN-ARNOLD

She was named Southern Conference player of the Year as a junior in 2004 and was a two-time all-Southern Conference honoree in 2004 and 2005. She left Appalachian as the all-time leader in career block assists (417) and ranked among the school’s top 10 in career hitting percentage (second - .320), solo blocks (seventh - 99) and kills (eighth - 1,222). Panzer’s .361 hitting percentage as a senior was the third-highest single-season mark in program history. Her 133 block assists in 2004 and 123 blocks assists in 2005 ranked fifth and eighth in Appalachian single-season history, respectively. She remains one of only two players in program history to earn honorable-mention all-America and all-region plaudits from the AVCA.

HISTORY AND RECORDS

In 2013, Stefanie Panzer was inducted into the Appalachian State athletics Hall of Fame. A middle blocker from 2002-05, Panzer was the first player in App State volleyball history to earn all-America recognition of any kind as an honorable-mention selection by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as a junior in 2004. She was also the Mountaineers’ first AVCA all-region performer, a feat she achieved as both a junior and a senior.

In 2017, Brittany Zahn-Arnold will be inducted for her contributions to the volleyball program from 2005-07. She was named 2007 Southern Conference Player of the Year and was a two-time all-Southern Conference first-team selection. She is currently third all-time in program history with 1,391 kills, fifth all-time in career attempts (3,448) and ninth all-time in hitting percentage (.248). Zahn-Arnold earned SoCon Player of the Year during current head coach Matt Ginipro’s first season at the helm of the program and subsequently helped pave the way for future Mountaineers, leading the Black and Gold to three-straight SoCon tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2005. She earned SoCon all-tournament team in 2005 and was a SoCon Player of the Week in 2007. Zahn-Arnold was a SoCon Player of the Month during October 2007 and earned AVCA all-American honorable mention all-region in 2007. Overall, she finished 43-11 in SoCon play, which included backto-back 23-win seasons in 2005 and 2006.

2017 APPALACHIAN STATE VOLLEYBALL

DOUG GILLIN DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS THIRD YEAR AT APPALACHIAN STATE ALMA MATER: SUNY CORTLAND, 1991 Doug Gillin, 48, begins his third year as director of athletics at Appalachian State University and possesses more than two decades of professional experience in collegiate athletics. Year two was just as big for Gillin as the Mountaineers saw a record crowd at Kidd Brewer Stadium on ESPN with 34,658 fans against the first-ever Power Five school to play at The Rock in Miami (FL). Football continued its success on the gridiron with a second-straight 10-win season, its first-ever Sun Belt title and backto-back bowl wins thanks to a 31-28 triumph against Toledo in the Camellia Bowl. Gillin continued to lock down big-time opponents in home-and-home series against in-state foes such as North Carolina (yearsXXX) and ECU (XXX). Money raising Facts Gillin’s first year at App State saw a number of big, on-field moments including App State’s record-setting 11-win football season, culminating in a thrilling win in the Camellia Bowl over Ohio. App State Women’s Indoor Track and Field captured their first-ever Sun Belt Championship, while Mountaineer Wrestling captured the Southern Conference crown. Gillin also secured the Mountaineers’ ESPN televised, home football game with Miami (Sept. 17) in front of, what is expected to be, a record crowd at The Rock. He also solidified membership in the Mid-American Conference for field hockey. Gillin’s impact has been quickly felt financially. Entering the 2016 season, football season ticket sales are up 30 percent, operating budgets have increased 15 percent through self-generated funds, and the Yosef Club reached another historical high in annual giving. He has also helped continue a streak of seven straight semesters where Appalachian State student-athletes have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Prior to App State, Gillin was most recently the deputy director of athletics at the University of Missouri. He spent three years at Missouri and played a prominent role in the Tigers’ transition to the Southeastern Conference. At Mizzou, Gillin was involved in all facets of the athletics department’s financial planning and budget development, was a member of the department’s strategic plan development team and oversaw all external operations, including the Tiger Scholarship Fund development unit, Mizzou Sports Properties, strategic communications and game operations. Most notably, he helped lead the University’s athletics capital campaign and was involved in a $102 million facilities enhancement plan for football, baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track and field. Additionally, he was responsible for all facets of Missouri’s day-to-day operations in the absence of the athletics director, had direct oversight over men’s basketball and was part of a three-person administrative team that oversaw the Tigers’ football program. Prior to his arrival at Missouri in 2012, Gillin spent a decade in North Carolina in various roles with ISP Sports/IMG College, the country’s leading collegiate multimedia, marketing and licensing/brand management company. During his 10year stint with Winston-Salem-based ISP/IMG, he served as the company’s senior vice president (2002-07), executive vice president/chief sales officer (2007-10) and senior vice president for college properties (2010-12).

The Gillin Family: Doug, Chase, Lia, Leslie, and Shea. In those roles, he managed the company’s entire sales force, which included approximately 350 employees and more than 90 university and conference partnerships. Before joining the ISP/IMG corporate headquarters, Gillin spent the first nine years of his athletics career on college campuses. He began as an assistant ticketing/business office director at Lehigh (1993-94) then served as an assistant marketing director at New Mexico (1994-95) and Missouri (1995-97). In 1997, he became the general manager of Mizzou Sports Properties before taking the same position with Syracuse Sports Properties in 1999. The Binghamton, N.Y. native was a four-year letterwinner in ice hockey at SUNY Cortland from 1987-91. He was a two-time team MVP and was selected as the squad’s co-captain in 1990. He graduated from SUNY Cortland in 1991 with a B.S. in physical education (sports management concentration). He went on to earn a master’s degree in physical education from Ohio University in 1993. Gillin and his wife, Leslie, have three children: daughters Shea and Lia and son Chase.
