In the spring of 2015, GO2 hosted four open forums, titled ‘Cycle of discussions on totalitarianism’. The guest speakers were art historian, anthropologist, architect and critic of arts.

FOR UMS

‘Visual Art’: by the Prof. Gezim Qendro as a memory where people feel sad by their personal past, their parents or grandparents, there was talk of lack of modernity, surveillance, and systematic oversight of people. Lack of intimacy, selflessness, and fear of the system are reflected in works of visual arts, paintings, sculptures, photographs, etc. Interesting was the case of a ceramic sculpture opened in the late 1990s, which contained the characters who came up against the regime, such as the Bejler, the landowner, the preacher, the anti-conformist of the time and who were trying to stigmatize them. In fact, the opposite was true, since their expression, artistic strength, was converted into a much more dynamic and expressive emotion than the coldness that were expressed by the common works of socialist realization.

‘Oral History from the Areas of the Borders with Kosovo’ by the urban anthropologist Prof. Dr. Arbnora Dushi, as a scholar of folklore and traditions, from the Albanological Institute of Pristina. In the present case, the scholar speaks of families separated from the regime, more specifically the example of the border between Albania and Kosovo, which maintained the kinship only through the oral form of expression and details, such as letters, photographs, captured tapes, objects Relics etc. The boundary was but a seemingly one-dimensional line, but a multidimensional space in human emotions.

‘Socialist realism architecture’ by the Architect Gjergj Islami, dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning (FAU) _ Tirana Polytechnic. The professor introduced two approaches: a general architecture of the period between 1945 and 1990. It was done an explanation to understand in more detail the prefabricated dwellings. Interesting topics touched many participants as many of them still live in the same dwellings.

‘Lapidars’ by Dr. Vincent WJ Van Gerven Oei representative of the organization ‘Department of eagles’. The researcher presented a survey conducted across the entire territory of Albania for 40 days as a study and data collection in the current state of over 600 lapidars. During the Communist era, the regime raised a large number of so-called ‘Lapidars’ in almost every village, city or city of Albania. These concrete Lapidars on the one hand functioned as commemorative monuments of ‘national heroes’ and ‘partisans’, but on the other hand, they monumentalized the presence of the communist party in every part of Albania. Their function, as a sign of social progress and commemoration, is clearly shown in the documentary Kinostudio ‘Lapidari’ (1984). They are not mutilated, neither maintained nor repaired – it makes them emblematic in their usual behaviour of the unprecedented communist past in Albania. Moreover, they have a unique cultural heritage for Albania and including our country in the map of the possibility of developing cultural tourism, as well as the possibility of interest of foreign and local scientific research.

In the late 60’s, Henri Lefebvre published his influential book ‘The Right to The City’, which became a cornerstone in radical thinking, thus, in urban social movements. In recent years, the discussion on “The Right To The City” has been enriched with the notion of the urban commons, which evokes territories governed by a group of people, the commoners, and a social relationship that underpins that governance. Discussion on urban commons is articulated with the socalled new enclosures therefore GO2 initiated the open forums inviting 8 guest speakers from 8 cities of Balkan, and exploring the potential and synergies of urban commons in the Region. They presented the dynamics of the cities as initiative of NGOs, students from Universities, urban activists and young entrepreneurs in public spaces, abandoned spaces and specifically in their right to the city. The endeavours of several groups to bring development in their communities by changing their mindsets and their approach for the commons. The forums are going to be organized again on May 2018, by sharing experiences with other cities and groups, in order to bring this debate in tradition.

Tourism Conference in Shkoder County already has shaped its own tradition. In 2016, GO2 Organization in cooperation with VIS Albania and COSPE set up and implemented a forum of all tourist stakeholders operating in Shkoder County - for the first time in 25 years - with the purpose of coordinating efforts to develop tourism in the area. The first, the second and the third conference achieved this goal, bringing together more than 350 entrepreneurs and local tourism officials from the 5 municipalities of Shkodra Region, the respective ministries, the municipalities and other cities in and out of the country.

1st Conference; March 18 -19, 2016 at University ‘Luigj Gurakuqi’, Municipality of Shkoder The topic of the first conference is ‘Challenges of Sustainable Tourism in Shkoder County’. Its purpose was to involve all actors operating in the tourism sector. This was the first time in 25 years that local entrepreneurs and local tourism officials of the 5 municipalities of Shkoder County gathered all together to discuss tourism in Shkoder County. Over 200 entrepreneurs and local officials of tourism sector from 5 municipalities of the County were introduced to 19 presentations of success models and the challenges of tourism in the area. The second day of the conference, with a record number of 85 participants, was moved to Kelmend, especially in Tamare and Selcë to look closely the development of tourism products.

2nd Conference; May 12-13, 2017 at the Professional School ‘Ndre Mjeda’ Bushat, Municipality of Vau Dejës ‘Smart start up tourism’ is the topic of the second conference. The purpose of was to acquaint and encourage participants with start-ups in tourism, through the idea contest, providing information on their financial support opportunities. In the second conference joined over 170 representatives of the tourism sector in Shkodeer County. The conference was organized in four parallel sections: Accommodation & Gastronomy, Innovative Events & Attractions, Management & Marketing and Guides & Tour Operators. Each of the sections was co-ordinated by a facilitator - field expert. Parallel to these, 40 competitors were trained by the Yunus Center in Albania for generating ideas and business start-up models. The jury assessed 2 winners based on three criteria: innovation, applicability and socio-economic impact, while the third winner was elected by the votes of the participants in the conference. The second day of the conference was moved to the archaeological site of Koman, where participants had the opportunity to get familiar with the latest archaeological findings in this ancient settlement.

3rd Conference; December 27, 2018: at Hotel Tourism Puka, Municipality of Puka The third conference was focused on ‘Local Events’ in function of sustainable tourism development for families, mainly towards new and lesser-known destinations and was attained by over 100 participants. Organizers of ‘Logu i Bjeshkëve’ and ‘Hana e Plotë’ in Malësi e Madhe, the fest of ‘Shën Kolli’ in Vau Dejës, ‘Festivali i Instrumentistëve të Vegjël Popullor’ in Fushë Arrëzi, ‘Agropuka’ in Puka, ‘Bicycle Day’ and ‘Lojërat Popullore’ in Shkoder presented their initiatives by explaining their challenges and successes. These ventures confessed the journey and the emotions they have brought up here. Some festivals have established tradition over 10-15 years, while others have just begun and need to be pushed further by generating a festive atmosphere and economy for the areas. The problem remains the sustainability, as well as how some of these festivals can create their own brands to the respective destinations and generate economies for them. During the second session of the conference, the organizers presented the Declaration to be forwarded to the central institutions for financial, logistical and promotional support for tourism events in Shkoder County. The declaration was signed by all participants at the local institutional level, NGOs, businesses, young volunteers, students, donors, etc. Participants who had knowledge of local festivals completed the forms, in order to complete the Calendar for Local Fests in Shkodra County, the second result of the third conference. Afterwards, participants networked with each other and those who had an interest became part of the guides around the city as well as at the AgroPuka laboratory.

HISTORIA KULLA E ded ndout A

Me detyrim do ju ndërronin mbiemrat familjeve -Kulla e Ded Ndout, u quajt familja e Rupave.

20 06

9.1. Karta e planimetrisë 3

B

During 8 expeditions conducted between 2017 and 2018, a working group of about 12 people have documented over 70-80 buildings. Each facility is equipped with a special card, accompanied by photo, location and architectural description. In some cases, when detailing was of particular interest, building measurement survey had been carried out, indicating the shape of the object in the plan and volume, as well as particular architectonic details.

ILUSTRIME

A

Data on dwelling in general and traditional methods of constructing them are also taken from oral stories of residents. In about 25 semi-structured interviews were interviewed all age groups, both sexes, selecting residents from all neighborhoods; family members, entrepreneurs of guesthouses, craftsmen of wood and stone, farmers, local professors and researchers, restorers, decision makers, Albanian and foreign visitors etc. Oral interviews are fully recorded, then transcribed, and the most important details are extracted. The secondary data used for the guideline are the result of an extensive literature review of more than 60 books and scientific papers, both in Albanian and foreign language, concerning the technical and architectural aspects of the buildings and the organization of daily life in the Alps Albanian.

Nature and man are the two pillars upon which the National Park Theth Visitor Center was inaugurated on November 2, 2018. Designed as a 4-section exhibition, Theth Visitor Center is equipped with a 3D Landscape Model of the National Park on a scale of 1: 10,000, a set of about 10 informative tables, shelves, tables and traditional chairs named ‘shkam’, all made with wood, as well as a simple chimney, typical for the area.

A set of about 10 informative tables give detailed information about the flora, the fauna, the great water resources and the natural monuments of Theth, and also these tables provide exclusive information about people of the area. Thus, traditions, lifestyles, cultural monuments and even popular dwellings, typical of the Albanian Alps, are offered to visitors through relevant informative tables, exhibited models, but also through some creative ideas realized with refinement and care.

In the hand-woven on textile triptych are presented three scenes from the song ‘The Power of Muji’, as well as the relevant writings in Albanian and English: ‘Eposi i Kreshnikeve’ and ‘Songs of the Frontier Warriors’. We recall that ‘Eposi i Kreshnikeve’ was translated and published in English in 2004 by albanologist Robert Elsie, who passed away in 2017 and according to his last will, already lies in the Thethi Valley.

The giant and detailed Map of Theth provides useful information for visitors and explorers of this National Park. In this map with very large dimensions are included all the necessary information, hiking paths and their length in kilometers, and even the location of medieval mills that are still used by the residents of the village.

Thanks to biking tradition, Shkodrans preserve a lot of memories and stories in their family archives. A competition was announced wich aimed to collect 65 photos from 24 comeptitors. After being carefully processed, the photos were selected by the jury composed of three members:anthropologist, art historian and transport planner. About 25 photos got selected for the exhibition, based on the criterias, like: old age, the story and the aesthetic of the photo. The hoto exhibition was opened on 30th Oct 2016 at City Museum, as promotion of the album where many citizens of Shkodra shared memories of their families in time. ÂŹ Shkodra, the northern city in Albania has 110 000 inhabitants and it knew to preserve the sustainable way of movement, because nowadays it results 29% cycling and 44% walking. This high percentage is due to tradition and not at all to the public funds and investments done by local government.

Globalization transforms cities and makes them all look the same. The traditional houses and the vernacular structures which reinforce a city’s sense of place, are going to disappear. Bring your family stories throughout your own photos and let preserve together our collective memory!

18th Oct 2017 was a special night between hundreds of professionals, students, friends and admirers of Traditional Architecture in the Albanian Alps. The tower, the symbol of centuries-old housing on the North Mountains, came to our eyes through the exhibition KULLA in Theth. Over one decade, the stunning village has been facing the pressure of tourist demand and the endeavour how to preserve and develop the cultural landscape in the area. Determining the rules and standards for future construction will be the next challenge, as part of the awareness for decision-makers and residents of the area. One-year research is part of the CABRA project from GIZ and in cooperation with GOPA and DIAVA consulting. This day came as an open air exhibition during the German October by providing various Macro / Micro Design Code panels, architecture models, small souvenirs handmade, VIJA journal and postcards.

URBAN ACTIV ISM

The premier of the documentary ‘Rruga’/ (‘Street’) of the Dutch artist Ms. Su Tomesen, in the main boulevard in Shkoder city was transmitted, and it was the first step toward the common space. The documentary was recorded on May in Tirana and it was premier in Shkoder for the EMW. The presenta¬tion of the documentary film was made by the artist, who explained the message of film to explore micro economies and informal economies developed in the streets of Tirana. After the pre-miere, the author invited the participants in a conversation to share their ideas, opinions and their perceptions.

'Game for City' addresses the issue of revitalization of public space in the village of Stajka, municipality of Vau Dejes. It deals with land use planning and includes pupils of the 13-15 years old. The game takes into account the needs of the local residents, municipality, developers, speculators, community center, NGOs, businesses and youth/ children. The urban transformation game format includes role-playing of the stakeholders while gathering around a two dimensional map of the public space and modular gaming blocks.

Each year, on 22nd April, GO2 organizes Earth Day Event with different schools in urban and rural areas. It aims to raise children’s awareness of the Earth’s protection, the negative effects of pollution, deforestation, global warming, waste and the use of pesticides, land uses. The methodology approaches informal education through interactive games, movies on environment, and creativity in handmade models. Pupils wrote and distributed messages to each other and to their community in reducing the negative impact on the environment, such as: ‘Keep the lake clean!’; ‘Save energy!’; ‘Do not cut the trees!’; ‘Use as few plastic as possible!’; ‘We protect Plants and Animals!’; ‘Preserve habitats!’ etc.

For the first time it took place one fully week the European Mobility Week, the 16th – 22nd Sept 2016 in Shkoder, Albania. It was not casually because the city of north has a tradition in cycling (29%) and walking (44%), it is ranked through the most sustainable movement cities in Europe. It aimed not to raise awareness for the inhabitants but for the decision makers in order to have priority to implement the Sustainable Mobility Plan which it was in process of compiling by GO2 and Municipality itself and supported by EU. During this week there were involved more than 2000 stakeholders, from different target groups, and more than 34 activities in 7 days. It was competing to the EMW Award and ranked in shortlist of 50 cities through more than 1300 ones.

‘Urban Identity’ activity during the European Mobility Week 2016 took place at Shkoder Train Station, which is almost abandoned those last decade. The session was opened with a musical trio from a musician band, following with an open lecture on the history of the construction of train stations in Albania, by PhD Gjergji Islami, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Polytechnic University of Tirana. About the train station in Shkoder, Mr. Islami highlighted the massive degradation of railway transport as a mode of transport, but by the other side, the architecture of the building continues to be preserved in good condition comparing with other cities.

Open air cinema was one of the key activities during the European Mobility Week 2016, taking place in suburb neighborhoods (projecting movies on the buildings façades), schools or other public spaces, gathering different age groups and grandfathers/parents. Some of the displayed movies are: the motto of the EMW 2016 ‘Smart mobility, strong economy’, the spot Sustainable Urban Mobility, the documentary ‘Street’, the short movie ‘Fans odyssey’.

Creativity remains the key word of our interactions with the community. They feel involved and in a colorful environment through markers, clay, diorama, coloured papers. We provided a sheet so that the kids could make handprints on it for their willingness to participate in the public space planning. We provided also other interactive games such as: twister, “do not get angry, soccer, tag, relay races, etc.

The street arts are coherent with green topics and the aquatic world, as these elements surround the ground. The school is located in RAMSAR area and is very rich in biodiversity therefore raising the awareness of the pupils is relevant. They respect the characteristic of this area, like: the used colors, the drawings look like they are real trees and shrubs, flowers and insects. Fine details, harmony in size, perfect composition beÂŹtween the arts of two facades turn these paintbrushes into a stunning frame for young children.

SOCIAL ENTER PRISE

Muhammad Yunus is a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist, and civil society leader who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. In 2006, Yunus and the Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts through microcredit to create economic and social development from below". He arrived in Tirana on 6-8 November 2014 on the occasion of Social Business Week and GO2 was pleased to share its idea of tourism start up in Shkoder area - more specifically cycling tourism and other tourist services.

EuroVelo is a network of 15 long distance cycle routes connecting and uniting the whole European continent. The routes can be used by cycle tourists as well as by local people making daily journeys. EuroVelo currently comprises of 15 routes and it is envisaged that the network will be substantially complete by 2020. The 15 EuroVelo routes, together with 70 000km cycling routes distance. 8 – Mediterranean Route: Cádiz – Athens and Cyprus 5,888 km

Since May 2014, GO2 has established a social enterprise focused in tourism sector which aims to create cycling tours packages in Shkoder region. As there is a lack of such a tourist product (cycling tours) in this area rich in cultural&natural heritage, it will produce competitive tourist supplies based in high European standards. They are packages of European network of cycling routes, in EuroVelo 8, the Mediterranean corridor (www. eurovelo.com), where GO2 is representative of Albania, as a national coordinator. Inasmuch as Shkoder has a cycling culture movement, creating cycling tour packages around Shkoder region provides a model for other areas all around Albania, such as: Vlora and Korca. Our initiative aims to draw attention for inhabitants of Shkodra to understand 'bicycle' not only as a mean of transportation in everyday life, but also as one of the best adventure tourism and social cohesion. In the beginnings there were 7-8 participants, growing up to 18 people, almost all Shkodra’s citizens and a small number of foreigners. The group of participants has been of different ages, but mainlywhere the young people that become part of these tours, leaving somehow ‘caffeine syndrome’. In total there were about 20 guides organized from June to November, and there were 14 different itineraries, defined and decided aspossible for bicycling, including: Drishti, Jubani, Shurdhahu, Shirqi, Shasi, Gajtani, Zogaj etc. The distance of these destinations is about on average of 15-20 km from Shkodra.

Critical Mass is an international movement in support of sustainable urban transportation. People from more than 500 cities around the world meet every month to ride togethÂŹer and celebrate biking in our modern cities. Critical Mass Shkoder became a monthly bicycle ride (every fourth Saturday) to inspire others to embrace a clean and modern city, ranking this city in addition to the long list of all the cities in the world that develop critical masses, as a peaceful group of pedalists. This movement of pedalistswas held for the first time in Shkodra in October 2014, with the participation of almost 250 bicycle and roller bikers, who together travelled for 9 kilometers the main streets of the city during 1.5 hours and ending with a festive closing in a bar-local. The purpose of the activity is to raise citizens ‘and institutions’ awareness about the rights and safety of non-defendants. Currently, the situation of the urban movement of Albanian cities not only has occupied the space it belongs, but does not even respect the pedal pedestrian right.
