We reported recently (GNews 17.03.22) that the future of GNews was in jeopardy, having been advised that there was to be another significant and immediate increase in the price of paper and therefore of printing from 1 April. Knowing that this could be the beginning of similar price hikes, Hugh even wondered whether GNews might have to stop production altogether. But now we have some good news. Having spent quite some time considering the options available to us (reduced distribution area, subscriptions, sponsorship, going fully digital, et cetera), we were surprised and excited to receive a call from Star Media Regional Manager Steve McCaughan. GNews has a wider readership than might be obvious; we are aware of a growing number of online readers, both internationally and around New Zealand. Having read about our plight in the 17 March edition, Christchurchbased Steve called us with some ideas, saying, “I have a passion for print journalism.” He spoke to his Ashburton Courier team, ran it

by Star Media owners Allied Press, then made us an offer too good to refuse; by Wednesday, 23 March, he had a proposal on the table. On Wednesday, 30 March, we met with Steve and the Courier team to shake socially distanced hands on the deal. From next Thursday, 14 April, our paper will be incorporated as an insert into the Ashburton Courier, and our logo will be included on their masthead. It will still be the same GNews we all know and love, but, as Steve quipped, “it will now be protected from the rain.” The upside for our advertisers and the promotion of Geraldine, in general, is that, although there will be a slight increase in our rates, we will have a significantly increased circulation as the Courier reaches over 16,000 homes here in the Geraldine area and throughout Mid Canterbury. The downside is that GNews can no longer deliver to the Temuka RDs. Instead, we will arrange for a bundle to be delivered weekly to Café Mes Ami at Ōrari for those who want to keep up with town news. The bulk deliveries

to Barker’s Foodstore and Eatery, the resource centre and the information centre will also cease. Meanwhile, GNews is available to read online each week at gnews.co.nz. We wish to record our appreciation of the great relationship we have had with Inkwise Print Partners, the rural delivery drivers, and the Geraldine town distribution team over the last three years, and for their service to Neil Wilson and Marg Braggins before that. Hugh says, “We have also been encouraged by the helpful feedback and general support received from the community over the past few weeks. It is heartwarming to know that people appreciate what we do.” “Allied Press Ltd is a South Island owned media company with interests in daily and community newspapers, regional television stations, websites and commercial printing operations.” (alliedpress.co.nz) Its flagship is the Otago Daily Times “which was founded in 1861 and boasts the longest daily publication record of any newspaper in New Zealand.” HUGH MCCAFFERTY
