Champion shearer Allan Oldfield continues his winning streak, being named 2020 Rural Sportsman of the Year at the Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards held in Palmerston North last Friday.

He says, “Blade shearing gets overlooked and it is an honour to put blade shearing in the spotlight.” The organisers say, “The Geraldine local holds both the individual and team’s category world blade shearing titles. Allan impressively became the first New Zealander to beat the blade shearing process of South

African competitors. In 2018, Allan was named the second person ever to win blade shearing at the big four royal shows in the UK: the Royal Highland, Royal Bath and West, the Royal Ulster and Royal Welsh. Recently, he won the blade shear competition at the 60th anniversary of the Golden Shears and he’ll soon head to Scotland to defend his world title in 2022.” (hrnz.co.nz) Allan says, “There was an impressive list of finalists, including a lot from the South Island.

Rakaia, Temuka... and Sally [Mallinson] and myself from Geraldine. In my category, I was up against arborist Scott Forrest (tree climber) and last year’s winner fencer Tony Bouskill.

The Vulcan salute, made famous by Star Trek character Mr Spock, has been recommended as a sanitary replacement for a handshake or a hug during these difficult times. Actor Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock in the long-running TV series, invented the gesture himself, basing it on a Jewish priestly blessing that impressed him as a child. The hand sign is made (using both hands with thumbs hooked together) during the performance of the blessing by the kohanim (priests), who stand at the front of the sanctuary and bless the congregation. Live long and prosper In the church Fi and I attend, there is a moment during the service where we shake hands and wish each other peace, or te rangimarie. The more exuberant among us even supplement handshakes with hugs.

Last Sunday, Tony, our vicar, suggested that we adopt social distancing before it is forced upon us, and that we invent no-touching alternatives. It was quite fun and a range of possibilities were thought of, creating a warm atmosphere, even in the absence of hugs.

I didn’t see anyone try out the Vulcan gesture, but now, knowing its background as a Jewish blessing, I may well adopt it. Other alternatives we could use include the palms-together namaste greeting of some Far Eastern countries, the hand to heart used by some Arab countries, or perhaps a simple Japanese bow. And, of course, we have the East Coast/ Kahungunu Wave - tilt the head back slightly and give a flash of the eyebrows.

Let us live long and prosper by taking sensible precautions, by following the advice of reputable sources - our health department and our local medical people - and by looking out for one another. Oh, and wash your hands, just like mother said. HUGH

New and old memories at Woodbury School’s Annual Flower and Craft Show Pupils and parents delivered creations and entries for Woodbury School’s Annual Flower and Craft Show last Friday morning at the Woodbury hall. For many parents, this was something they took part in when they themselves were pupils at Woodbury School.

“Originally, the three neighbouring rural schools - of Woodbury, Te Moana and Ōrari Bridge - came together each year to hold the annual flower show.

When the other rural schools closed, Woodbury School kept the event running, and it has been going for many, many years,” says new entrant teacher Maureen Bromwich.

Sisters Nic and Trudy Van Ryswyk both remember making sand saucers while attending Ōrari Bridge School and then again when they shifted to Woodbury School. “We did our sand saucers at home and brought them into the flower show,

but now, our children, who attend Woodbury School, have a morning where everyone helps and they are made at school,” Nic says.

Kirsten Ross is another past Woodbury pupil, but she remembers the flower show as a smaller event than that which takes place now. “There definitely wasn’t a huge list of things to make and bring along when I was at school. The kids these days have a wide variety of crafts, baking, art or flower arrangements to participate in.”

Amelia Taylor (7) was “super proud” of her silverbeet entry in the vegetable section. “It’s taller than the table,” she says. “There’s even bigger ones at home.”

Amelia had five entries in different categories, including decorated cake, sunflower, Lego creation and a living plant. Her mother Nicky says, “It is exciting for us as parents to see our children

This was Woodbury School administrator Robyn Worthington’s first year helping to plan the annual show.

“It certainly takes a lot of organising before the day, but it brings the whole Woodbury community together: parents, grandparents and pre-schoolers have their very own categories to participate it. We also have local residents come and help us on the day with judging. The children go to a lot of effort with their creations. Once the children finish dropping off their entries, they go back to school, while the judging takes place. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Time to say goodbye It’s with mixed feelings that I say “Goodbye” to Geraldine after 21 fantastic years. My partner Arthur and I moved here in 1999, almost by accident, but loved it from the beginning.

Geraldine welcomed us and we immediately felt part of a community: what a relief after the bustle and stress of having a business in Auckland.

It was wonderful to be able to relax and meet friends for coffee, to experience the work of the many talented artists and craftspeople and to wander round the vibrant festivals and events: Geraldine has it all!

But, with the passing of Arthur last year, I felt the need to rethink my situation. So, I am moving back to Auckland, to be near my sons and their families and to begin the next part of my journey.

Geraldine has given me many milestone moments: dressing the racing pigs for the Mayfield Show, judging competitions at the schools, putting on fashion shows at various venues, sharing time with the staff and residents at McKenzie HealthCare and the BEST 60th BIRTHDAY PARTY EVER! at the Woodbury hall.

So goodbye, Geraldine. I’ll miss you and all my lovely friends, but I will be back.

Back in the ’70s, Arthur had an arts and craft shop in Auckland and used to ask passing tourists what was their favourite place in New Zealand. Nine times out of 10, they would say “Geraldine. You should go there!” And we did.

“Ideal” conditions for multi challenge We held our annual Geraldine Multi Challenge last Sunday and received great support from entrants, sponsors and helpers. The annual race, based at the Ōrari Racecourse, is popular with runners, walkers and bikers of all abilities.

The mountain-bike races are run over three distances, 52km, 32km and 18km, while runners have a half marathon, 13.8km and 5.8km distances. The day was overcast and still, ideal conditions for the event, and the courses were in excellent condition: well marked and mowed or sprayed where required.

There were a total of 450 entries, only a little down on last year (possibly because of a clash with the Motatapu event in Wānaka on the same day), with the majority being mountain bikers, although running numbers are increasing each year. There was just one injury during the race: a biker was taken to hospital with what looked like a broken collarbone.

The winners of the 52km mountainbike race were Olly Pearce of Christchurch and ex-Geraldine resident Martina Wreford of Timaru, who both said they really enjoyed the day. Martina’s husband Ben won the

men’s half marathon and Iva Pražáková of Methven won the women’s half.

Results are on the Geraldine Multi Challenge Facebook page for those wishing to check.

More than 40 people helped as course marshals and probably the same number ran the races, provided food and drinks and directed at the racecourse.

Geraldine Lions run the race in conjunction with Bike Geraldine and all money raised goes back into our local community.

CROQUET CLUB HOLDS FUN TOURNAMENT Geraldine’s 23rd annual golf-croquet fun-day tournament, held recently, was fancy dress and had a surprise visit by Una Landreth, one of the key founding members of the club 30 years ago. This style of event was Una’s brainchild and is believed to have been the first of its kind in the country, but it is now an annual fundraiser held by most clubs. Gold leaf and steel feature in artist’s work Philippa Wilson says she is delighted to bring her exhibition, Into the Great Wide Open, to the McAtamney Gallery. She is married to sculptor Bryn Jones, from Geraldine, and they regularly visit his mother, Pauline, who still lives here.

The couple live on the Otago Peninsula, but, Philippa says, “Geraldine is an important place for me.”

Philippa is primarily a sculptor, using what she describes as “an iconography of images, including hearts, butterflies,

trees, birds and seeds”. However, this collection consists of 12 paintings and a gold-painted cut-plate steel tree that stands 1.5 metres tall. She says there is a sculptural quality to her paintings, which include the use of gold leaf. “They are gestural paintings, layered, indicating the movement of time.” She explains the works evoke the changing cloudscape, contrasted with the more solid earth.

Trees are important to her, because they “network and support one another”.

Philippa also has an interest in the visual arts intersected with poetry and dance. On occasion, she worked collaboratively with the late poet Hone Tuwhare, Keneti Muaiaova (University of Auckland dance lecturer) and Tessa Petersen (violin lecturer and Dunedin Symphony Orchestra concert master).

Alan Averis offers tour of the Chathams Peel Forest man Alan Averis returned from the Chatham Islands last week after leading 10 friends and neighbours on a weeklong visit.

Fifty years ago, Alan Averis worked on the Chatham Islands as an engineer. His three daughters have fond memories of their time there and last year they returned with him and grandchildren for a visit, as an 80th birthday present.

Alan says, “I love the place and had always wanted to return and was determined to go back again. The owners of the Henga Lodge were willing to give me a good deal, if I could bring 10 people. Well, I was able to recruit the first five at a quiz night at the Green Man café; getting 10 people together was no problem. I’d never organised a tour before and am grateful to my friend Helen Cholmondeley for organising the paperwork.

“They needed a guide because many of the interesting things are on private land. Even after 50 years, some people still remembered me. It is a very interesting place: unspoilt and beautiful. Nothing much has changed in 50 years, apart from some roads that have been put in. For all that, a visit to the original Lutheran mission station involved three miles across grass paddocks.”

A further trip is in the planning stages.

“Maybe in spring: I’ve had a lot of interest already.”

Fifty-year anniversary for local crafters The Geraldine Creative Fibre group will celebrate their 50-year anniversary, with an open day called Last Yarn and Dropped Stitch, at the Woodbury hall this Monday, 23 March.

There will be displays, stalls, traders,

raffles, speakers and surprises for the community and fellow craftspeople to enjoy.

A variety of crafts will be on display, including spinning, weaving, knitting, felting, crochet, Kiwicraft and dyeing.

Dog obedience lessons in Geraldine Geraldine dogs and their owners have been partaking in obedience sessions at Todd Park with dog obedience teacher Lanika Kroon. “I just love dogs and it’s good to be able to help people with their dogs’ obedience,” she says.

“If you’ve got the right tools and enthusiasm, it’s easy.”

She says there are good reasons for opting into the training. “Having someone help you do it makes it easier; it shows you obedience, first hand. It’s about sit, stay, come and how to walk well on a leash: basic obedience, which makes owning a dog easier.

“But it’s also about socialisation.

It’s good to teach them in these classes how to approach other dogs, how to greet other dogs in a polite way: different dogs, small dogs, young dogs - and a range of people.”

She adds, “The dogs are learning a new language - our language - so it takes time and perseverence and a lot of repetition. But it’s easy to learn. I use food and position reinforcement; lots of pats and enthusiasm. It gives them motivation and teaches them behaviour you want.”

Lanika, owner of dogs Nora and Heidi, began dog obedience as a course participant at the Geraldine park, where the Harcourts

Temuka-sponsored sessions have been held since 2012, and where she now imparts what she’s learned. “It’s good to have the lessons here - and that there are distractions here: it’s good for dogs to get used to them.”

The obedience aim generates its own energy. “It gives the owners enthusiasm to keep going, because they and their dogs are improving.”

Six-week dog obedience classes run in late summer and again in spring.

Sessions are once a week, in the evening.

St John cadets aim for road safety badges Last week, I visited the Four Peaks St John Cadet’s group and it was great to see the kids having fun with some balloon games.

It is exciting times for our local cadets: Jessica Howell, who has been involved with cadets for three years, has stepped up as divisional manager. Jessica is also a volunteer ambulance officer and recently started as a registered nurse at Timaru Hospital.

St John cadets range from age six to 18 and meet on a Tuesday at 5.25pm at the St John rooms. The leaders set a theme for each term; this term, they are learning about road safety. The cadets work towards badges for each topic.

When I visited, they were discussing various hazards around Geraldine and also did a first-aid exercise and worked through a burn scenario.

Cadets can compete in competitions, where they are assessed on their first aid, scene management and communication skills. They can also become operational ambulance officers. To volunteer for the ambulance service, you need to have had a full driver’s for a year.

At the start and the end of a session, cadets take part in a formal parade and look very smart in their uniforms. The session ends at 7pm.

Following the road theme, this week

ambulance officers had a table-top training session with a multiple casualty traffic accident.

It is great to work through scenarios and discuss what can potentially be a rather overwhelming situation. Studies have shown that these types of simulations work towards creating automaticity, so your training kicks in when faced with these situations.

Ryan takes out South Island super saloon cup Dunedin’s Beachlands Speedway winners’ podium was Ryan Marsden’s, after he cleaned up the season’s final Mag and Turbo Super Cup South Island super saloon feature race recently.

He didn’t just take home the round final by two thirds of a lap; he lapped half the field while he was at it. “The car went like a rocket,” he says.

His 25-lap final win on the quartermile track came after placing first and second in the event’s two 15-lap heats and just a month after taking out the competition’s Cromwell round.

Although he enjoys “a good tussle with someone, it’s good, as well, to have a race where your car’s dialled-in. The car that night - it just went.”

Behind that “dialled-in” spot is a lot of graft and track time. “There’s been a lot of time behind the wheel. We’ve been racing even twice a weekend, and I’ve been tuning my driving... There’s no substitute for it. You bond with the car.”

Underlying that is the crew’s work.

Jacob Cunniffe: quarter-midget champion for second year running Motorsport enthusiast Jacob Cunniffe has met one of his self-imposed goals this season by winning the quarter-midget South Island championship for the second year running, at the Ellesmere meeting on 8 March. Jacob says, “Track conditions were perfect, which made for some fun exciting racing.”

Jacob’s grandmother Heather Braddick says, “Jacob has had 47 races this year and has been on the podium at every meeting.”

In the Rediflex southern quarter-midget series, Jacob is currently in second place with two rounds to go. “The current leader is an Auckland car, but I am in with a

chance,” he says.

The South Canterbury grass-kart championship has just finished, with Jacob coming second. Heather says, “Some weeks Jacob has both cars racing, so chooses to race the quarter-midget, therefore missing out on points for grass karting.” She says he is happy with second place in the circumstances.

Everyone is competitive in the super saloons, so, if you’re having good results repeatedly, you’re doing something right.”
