CSE In-text Citations Traditionally, there have been three major CSE systems for in-text citation: citation-sequence, name-year, and citation-name. th However, in the most recent (7 ) edition of the CSE style manual, the citation-name method is given preference. For that reason, it is the in-text citation method described below. Recommendations for the other two methods can be found in Scientific Style and Format: The CSE Manual (call number Ref. T 11.S386 2006 c.2 at Fenwick Library). The numbers that are assigned to the end reference are used for the in-text references (regardless of the sequence in which cited sources appear in the text). For example, if the end reference number for Zielinksi is 56, and Zielinski is quoted in the first line of your essay, the superscript in-text reference number will be 56. Every subsequent time you reference, Zeilinski, you will also use the superscript in-text reference number 56. Example: In text-reference: 22

Traumatic life events and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are endemic among American civilians . Each year... End reference: 22. Kessler RC, Sonnega A, Bromet E, Hughes M, Nelson CB. Posttraumatic stress disorder in the National Comorbidigy Survey. Arch Gen Psychiatry. 1995 Dec;52(12):1048-1060. *note: If several in-text references are used at once, they appear in numerical order. For example: ...have been shown

3,8-10,17,33,34

to abrogate the requirements of T-cells...

**also note: in-text references should immediately follow the relevant material, rather than appearing at the end of long clauses or sentences. For example: 3

Only one study relating to the adverse effects of... Last updated 3/31/2010
