Happy Holidays from the Dean of Students! The holiday season is a time for reflection on the past year and renewed hope for the year ahead. You have accomplished a great deal in the past twelve months. You have successfully completed college classes while holding jobs and raising families. You are a remarkable assemblage of people who are dedicated to reshaping your lives and your future. My wish for you this holiday season, is that you take the time to recognize your achievements and think about how you have made a difference not only in your life, but in the lives of those around you. I am honored to be your dean. I consider working with all of you one of my blessings. I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful and peaceful season ahead. Have a very Happy New Year and I look forward to our continued work together in 2014!

Diane S. McKelvey Name: Diane McKelvey

Program of Study: Health Information Management

Semester of anticipated graduation: December 2013

Career goal: To work in a cancer registry and become a Cancer Registrar

Tell us a little about yourself and your life: I am married to Jack McKelvey and we have an adorable Shih Tzu named Sweet Pea. I have two grown sons and five grandchildren. We also had a foreign exchange student named Sandra who we have “adopted” as our own and we call her our German daughter. We moved to Naples 1995 and are originally from Columbus Ohio.

What are your hobbies / extracurricular activities? I love to read, travel, walk, and play piano and tennis. I also enjoy studying German and French languages. I have missed most of these activities since I started at Hodges and look forward to being able to spend time once again doing what I love.

What has been your favorite class at Hodges University? I enjoyed the coding classes most of all, because they were so different than all the other classes. However, each class had special meaning or memories. I met some of my first Hodges friends in my first semester. Many of these classmates have been in other classes of mine or been on the Dean’s list with me. It has been wonderful to see how well they have done. I have met some of the greatest professors at Hodges who help make each student a success. Every one of my professors has been outstanding. Congratulations, Diane! If you would like to nominate someone for Student of the Month, stop by Student Development for an application.

Tammy Rose, an FSoT student and President of WITH US (Women in Technology, Hodges University Students), has received NCWIT’s and Symantec’s Student Seed Fund award in the amount of $1,000 for her “Bits and Bytes” Lunch and Learn event!

WITH US will host a programming workshop using the introductory programming tools Scratch and StartLogo. The purpose of the workshop will be to introduce programming to moms and their children together. This will allow them to work on programming projects while learning from each other and spending quality time with each other. This will also bring women from a diverse population together to increase their technology skills in a very socially active environment. By hosting an activity where the women can bring their children, it will be easier for the women to make time for this activity since they will not need to seek childcare. Having an activity where they can work on projects with their children will also provide an environment where they can actively learn alongside their child. Having more than one person in the household involved in the project will provide additional support and initiative for them to successfully complete the projects. Projects in Scratch and StartLogo will progress forward to increase the learners’ skills and understanding of programming constructs.

We are very grateful for the opportunity to utilize these funds for the ongoing education of women, girls, and underrepresented minorities in the field of technology! We want to especially thank NCWIT (National Center for Women & Information Technology) and Symantec for their generosity and support in granting us this $1,000 award!
