orset is known for its breath-taking views, wholesome food and stunning Jurassic coastline. Immortalised by authors such as Thomas Hardy, the county’s Jurassic coastline was declared a Natural World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2001. Historically, the county was part of the kingdom of Wessex before the state of England emerged in the ninth century. A mythical dragon, the ‘Wyvern’ was the symbol of the ancient kingdom and one of the main reasons why Dorset has links to King Arthur. Dorset is first mentioned in 841 AD, and after the Norman conquest of 1066 it became one of 39 historic English counties, which did not really change until the Domesday Book of 1086. The county was always favoured by nobles on hunting trips, and managed to avoid the worst of the English Civil War in 1642.

Welcome to Dorset Dorset does have a less than squeaky clean past, though. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the county became synonymous with smuggling, from the Isle of Purbeck to Weymouth to Lyme Regis. Usually liquor, the goods were brought ashore by small boats under the cover of darkness, a n d

the visitor The county is still largely agricultural because it was not affected by the Industrial Revolution, and so retained its rural culture. The village of Abbotsbury is a beautiful place and one of Dorset’s most popular tourist destinations, due to its Swannery, Sub-tropical gardens and beaches. The oldest farmed flock of swans in the country is thought to be the ones here at the Swannery, as records show their existence in 1393. When it comes to food, Dorset is unparalleled for the quality of its traditional fare. The county has a wealth of fresh fish and seafood due to its long coastline, and a variety of local cheeses thanks to its vibrant farming community. The county’s perfect coastline, striking countryside and magnificent historical sites make Dorset an unmissable destination along the South West coast of Britain.

sometimes entire towns would be involved in the scheme. Dorset’s 200 million-year old coastline is an absolute must-see and is the home of some of the county’s top tourism spots, such as Abbotsbury, Durdle Door and Lyme Regis. All of these sites have special historical significance, as do the towns of Dorchester, Sherborne and Lyme Regis.
