Roles of Wedding-Party Participants

A wedding can be a wonderful and memorable experience for all of those involved. That's why you ask friends or relatives to share in the event and serve in your wedding party. Your offer is a wonderful honor, one that goes with it varying degrees of responsibility depending on the role each person will be playing. To help you decide who to ask to be in your wedding party, here is a list of titles and responsibilities for each participant's role.

Maid of Honor The maid of honor is a role typically filled by a sister or a very close friend. It is the equivalent of the groom's best man. The maid of honor's role, therefore, is typically very involved. Among her many responsibilities, the maid of honor accompanies the bride on shopping trips for her wedding dress while also planning the bridal shower, bachelorette party and coordinating the bridal party gift for the bride. Also, the maid of honor helps the bride get dressed on her wedding day, holds the groom's wedding ring during

the wedding and may also help in the writing of invitations. The maid of honor will also typically act as a witness to the wedding and dance with the best man at the reception. If the woman you're asking is married, her title will be matron of honor. Best Man Perhaps the most well-known responsibilities of the best man are organizing the bachelor party and giving the toast at the reception. But the best man, who is typically a brother or best friend of the groom, also has a slew of other responsibilities. In addition to helping the groom choose his tuxedo and get dressed before the wedding, the best man coordinates the couple's gift from the groomsmen and takes care of the newlyweds' transportation to the airport after the reception or the next morning. The best man may also hold onto any payment that's due to the reception site or the donation for the house of worship, and take care of any final financial details. He also holds the bride's

organize the bachelor party as well. Flower Girl If the bride has a sister who is especially young, that sister typically fills the role of flower girl. Since most flower girls are very young, their responsibilities are generally limited to carrying a basket of flowers during the processional and, depending on the bride's preference, tossing flower petals on the ground to mark the bride's entrance.

wedding ring during the ceremony. Bridesmaids Along with walking in the wedding procession, bridesmaids attend the shower and contribute to the bridal gifts. Bridesmaids, who are typically sisters or friends of the bride or groom, also dance with the groomsmen during the reception. To be further involved, each can be given specific roles, like reading a religious passage at the

ceremony, providing assistance with choosing wedding vendors, or helping to address wedding invitations. Groomsmen Groomsmen are the male equivalent of the bridesmaids, typically having nearly identical responsibilities. Sometimes, groomsmen can act as ushers for guests arriving at the ceremony. Groomsmen walk in the wedding processional and attend and help

Ring Bearer Like the flower girl, the ring bearer is a very young member of the family, only the ring bearer is a male. The ring bearer's role is to carry a pillow with the rings sewn on it during the processional. Some couples choose to have the ring bearer and the flower girl walk next to one another during the processional. Parents of the Bride The bride's parents may be responsible for hosting the wedding, if they will be completely financially responsible for the event. In some cases, the father of the bride

escorts his daughter down the aisle alone, but in other instances or in religious ceremonies, both parents may accompany the bride. In all cases, it's her preference. The mother of the bride may help fund or contribute to the planning of the bridal shower if the Maid of Honor needs assistance. These parents may also foot the cost of an engagement party or dinner to meet the groom's family. Parents of the Groom The groom's parents should host a rehearsal dinner prior to the wedding. They may also choose to contribute to the wedding if they desire. In most cases, the groom's parents have limited responsibilities, but can be involved as much as the wedding couple would like. Traditionally, the groom's mother confers with the bride's mother on what color gown she is wearing, so as not to go with the same shade. The groom's parents may walk down the aisle in advance of the rest of the wedding processional and take their seats.

Tips when registering for your wedding by Jim Cross Press-News Reporter Today, registering is an interactive process enjoyed by the couple. There are no longer hard-set rules that need to be followed, rather decision making should be about creating a comfortable home and enjoying your new lifestyle -- together. Registry Tips * Register about five to eight months before the wedding. This assures that your list will be in place before any parties or showers. * An experienced, professional wedding registry consultant has the product knowledge to help you with your selections and coordinate items. * Remember to consider store accessibility when creating your registry. You'll want to make sure guests can get you the items you requested. * Consider registering at two or more stores for guest convenience. Just don't

overlap gifts or you'll end up with duplicates. Locally, Sue Engelhardt, owner of The Front Porch, had the following suggestions when registering.

* Know your color scheme. * Decide your style - for both the bride and groom. * Don't be afraid to register for something expensive. People will go together

for a group gift. Items she sees being popular for gift items include kitchen items for bridal showers and picture frames for the wedding. "For special gift items, we can order tableware or flatware for a couple," said Engelhardt. Kelly Kuper, owner of Gifts Galore, said she sees bright, vibrant colors the trend for kitchenware. "A real popular gift item is the 'Janet Basket,'" said Kuper. "We seem to be the only one carrying them in the area. "Many brides are looking for this item and they are great to fill with items for a group gift." Kuper also wants to remind people a great gift for grooms are college items from ISU, U of I or UNI. "It's great when a bride and groom can register locally," said Kuper. "We even offer delivery of gifts to the wedding reception, for easy, hassle-free attendance."

Couple becomes ‘lovestruck’ during ISU tailgate party

Find the right florals for your wedding day by Jim Cross, Press-News Reporter

"I would recommend picking flowers that will look fresh for the entire day," said Marsha Stricker, owner of The Flower Gallery. "The flowers need to last through the wedding, photos and through the reception." Stricker said she sees green hydrangea and a newer style of orchid, called Dendrobium, as the most popular flowers being used. "You also need to be concerned with the temperature and the season the wedding is going to be held, when choosing your flowers," said Stricker. * Attendants' bouquets should be identical, and it's best to coordinate these bouquets with the attendants' gowns. Only the maid of honor traditionally receives a slightly different bouquet, as it's customary to give her one apart from the rest, though not significantly so. "When it comes to trends in arrangements, feathers are becoming a popular floral accent," said Val Williams, owner of the Val Blossoms. "I think it is a great idea.

Leading up to their big day, couples have plenty to worry about before they finally get to walk down the aisle as man and wife. With all the trials and tribulations, planning a wedding is no small task, as even the most minor details must be accounted for. Such is the case with the floral arrangements. Though not a minor detail in any way, preparing a wedding day floral arrangement is critical, particularly when it comes to the more individual aspects of a floral plan. For instance, the following components must be considered when devising a floral plan. * It's tradition for bridal bouquets to contain white or cream-colored flowers such as stephanotis, roses, orchids, or lilies.

It is fun and whimsical. They add movement to the arragement." * The men in the wedding party also needs to take part in the floral plan. Worn in a buttonhole or lapel, a boutonniere should be worn on the left side of the jacket and match a flower from the bridesmaids' bouquet. The groom should also wear a boutonniere, though his should match a flower from the bride's bouquet. When wearing boutonnieres, men should not wear additional accessories such as pocket squares. * Certain special guests, such as grandmothers and mothers, should receive corsages. While the corsages do not need to be identical, they should match the bridesmaids' bouquets. It's best to consult with a florist for a corsage color that matches all dresses, as typically the corsages must be ordered before the bride and groom know what their mothers, grandmothers and other special guests will be wearing. A corsage that goes with anything, therefore, is ideal.

Love can be found in many different times and locations, and for Lindsay Wegner and David Voight, that moment came at a football tailgate party. “Dave and I met at the Iowa State versus Army football game,” said Wegner. “We literally ran into each other. “The first conversation we had was about David’s cowboy boots!” Lindsay is a graduate of Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson, Minnesota in 2005. She graduated in 2009 from Iowa State University with a degree in Marketing and Management. Her parents are Jeff and Dawn Wegner. Pointers for the best wedding music experience hiring anyone to ensure what they're offering will fit in with the wedding. Also, it's helpful to confirm the person or people being auditioned will be the exact individuals at the wedding. Some entertainment companies hire out contract musicians, meaning the preview musicians may not be the same person who will perform at the ceremony. That can potentially prove disasterous. If a certain musician or DJ is requested, be sure it is put down in writing in the contract. Provide the musical entertainment with some information to further help the wedding go off without a hitch. This may include but not be limited to the following: - Names of all wedding

party participants so they can be properly introduced. - Name of the married couple, including pro-

nunciation of the last name, if necessary. - The title of the couple's song. - The titles of songs to

be danced with mother/son or father/daughter. - A listing of any preferred songs.

- The title of a "spotlight dance" song. - Any music that is off-limits at the reception. - Special announcements that should be made, such as mentioning a guest's birthday or another special event involving guests. - Whether a bouquet and garter toss will take place, and which songs should be played during these traditions. In most cases, wedding musicians are professionals who have handled many weddings and are very accustomed to what should be done to make the night a memorable one. Trust in the expertise of the musicians, and provide guidance where necessary.

Brides and grooms have a few options when it comes to the music played at their ceremony and reception. Live musicians or DJs are often the entertainment of choice. When hiring the entertainment, there are some important things to keep in mind. The music of the wedding will set the tone for the event and keep guests entertained during key moments of the day. Musicians will often work in conjunction with a maitre d' to be sure the reception moves along smoothly and sticks to the schedule. Music will be played while guests are dining and when there are opportunities for dancing. It's essential to listen to musicians or DJ before

Groomsmen have many different responsibilities Happy couples choose friends and family members to serve as attendants in their weddings. Bridesmaids and groomsmen each have different responsibilities in the wedding. In ancient times, groomsmen essentially served as the groom's bodyguards, ensuring that he made it safely to the altar and to his future wife. Today, the groomsmen's roles are not based on saving life and limb. Today's groomsmen serve as assistants to the groom and help plan the bachelor party. They also usher guests down the aisle at the ceremony. They also may have a few other responsibilities, depending on

what the couple wants of their assistants. Before the Wedding * Help pick out the tuxedos and show up for fittings. * Help plan and share the cost of the bachelor party. * Attend rehearsals for the ceremony and appear at the rehearsal dinner. * Pay for their own wedding attire or formal wear rentals. * Help unload cars with supplies if the couple is decorating the wedding themselves. * Pay for their travel expenses and accommodation during the celebration. * Return formal wear for themselves and the groom.

* Serve as escorts for the bridesmaids at the ceremony. * Cater to anyone's needs and mingle with the guests afterward.

The groomsmen have several different responsibilities before, after and during the wedding ceremony. * Provide transportation for the couple to the airport or honeymoon destination if the best

man is unavailable. During the Ceremony * Greet and seat guests

Party Time * Ensure that the groom does not get too intoxicated. * Sit at the table of honor beside the rest of the bridal party. * Mingle with the guests. * Participate in all photos if asked. * Dance with their bridesmaid counterpart. * Help load the wedding gifts into the car afterward.

For most brides-to-be, the choice of a dress is among the first and most important decisions in planning a wedding. With thousands of choices in every price range, finding the perfect wedding dress can be a difficult and time-consuming process. But by making some decisions before setting foot in a store, the search will be both easier and a whole lot more enjoyable. Start by knowing your limits. To avoid disappointment down the line, determine the maximum amount that you can spend on a dress -- and don't forget to include all the little extras, such as undergarments, shoes, jewelry, veil, and/or hair ornaments. Next, take an inventory of your personal

style. If you know that you're not comfortable in strapless or sleeveless dresses, for example, you can immediately eliminate these options. "One of the first things you need to do is find the style that best fits you," said Anita Sponheim, owner of The Bridal Theatre in St. Ansgar. ""You also need to keep an open mind." The trick is to rule out a few style options before hitting the magazines or stores and then be open to all other options. There will be no shortage of opinions - from mothers, sisters, friends, and store personnel -- about your choice of a wedding dress, but the decision, ultimately, is the bride's alone. A great strategy is to be open to suggestions about dresses to try on, but reserve the right to choose the look that

feels right to you. With so many potential options, you might want to consider bringing along a camera and taking photos of yourself in the dresses that could be "contenders." Remember your goal is to find a dress that flatters your body and expresses your personal style -- not to fit into a particular size. If you look ghostly in white, feel free to choose a creamier shade or a dress that has decorative accents of a different color near your neck, shoulders and face. Similarly, there's no rule that a wedding dress has to be floor-length. If you're planning a daytime or more casual wedding, you might want to consider a tea-length dress (one that falls a few inches above the ankle) or go even shorter. Style and fit may be the two most important factors in choosing a wedding

dress, but comfort should be a close third. Ask yourself if you will be comfortable in a particular dress given the setting in which your wedding will take place. For instance, if you've always dreamed of an outdoor wedding, you may want forego a dress with a long, trailing train that could trip you up on your walk to or down the aisle. "Knowing what type of wedding you’re going to have, will help with the dress to choose," said Sponheim. Even if you're planning an indoor event, having a dress and shoes that are as comfortable as they are beautiful will greatly increase your odds of enjoying your special day to the fullest. "The location of the wedding is also very important," she said. "Being outside or on the beach, will make a big difference."

1. Bob and Jane Roggensack Bob and Jane (Trumm) Roggensack of Osage, were married on July 11, 1987 at St. Martins Church in Cascade, IA. Their wedding party included 5 bridesmaids and 5 groomsmen. The bridesmaids wore teal green tea dresses and the groomsmen wore black tux with white cummerbunds. White flowers were in the bouquets. Memories of the wedding: The church was not airconditioned and the temp was 100 degrees at 11 a.m. The wedding party, bride & groom had sweat running off their faces by the time the ceremony was over. Fortunately the reception was in an air-conditioned hall, so everyone was able to cool off. There was a champagne fountain and all of the champagne that had been ordered was drank. Because, the bride specifically told the groomsmen to be sure and wear black socks for the wedding... they all went out of their way to wear white, red or yellow socks for the day. All had a really good laugh and some great pictures of the colored socks. Bob is the optometrist at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage. Jane is a RN, staff nurse at the birth center, Mercy North Iowa. They have 3 children, Jonah, 17, Carter, 15 and Lily 15.

2. Keith and Terry Johanns Keith and Terry (Moore) Johanns of Osage, were married on September 24, 1977 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Osage. Their wedding colors were fall colors of orange, brown, yellow, and fern green. There were 3 bridesmaids that carried baskets of fall colored daisys & mums, three groomsmen, and 2 ushers. Main of Honor was the brides sister Sherry Vance and the best man was Bill Sullivan, a friend. They also had a flower girl and ring bearer. They had a wedding reception of cake & mints after the ceremony in the church hall and a barbecue at the bride’s parents home immediately following the reception at the church. Everything went well before and during the wedding ceremony. The wedding couple had to live at the brides parents home for the first week of their marriage because they couldn’t move into their home until Oct. 1st. Keith and Terry farm east of Osage. They have 3 children, Joe and wife Ann and son Lucas; Jenna and husband Andrew Carlson; and Jessa and fiance’ Casey Kettlesen.

There were 7 other weddings of college graduates that weekend – we had a small crowd in a big church. Memories of the wedding: Our wedding day was 102 degrees and we all walked a block from the church to the reception in the afternoon heat. As Jim & I were walking down the aisle after the ceremony, we saw the wedding coordinator talking to a police officer. Some kids had vandalized buildings across the street and kid ran in the church during the ceremony. They stole money from the bridal party’s belongings in the dressing room and stole the groom’s father’s hat. The police officer tried to enter the sanctuary during the service but the wedding coordinator stopped her. So instead of an orderly exit from the building by our guests, we had to stay put while the police sorted everything out and questioned people to find out what was stolen from the church. MITCHELL COUNTY PRESS-NEWS, Osage, IA, Wed., Feb.22, 2012

* Help load the wedding gifts into the car afterward.

at the ceremony in the appropriate rows or pews. * Stand near the groom during the ceremony.

Wegner chose pink and green for her wedding colors. Following the ceremony, a reception will be held at the Cedar River Complex Event Center.
