I quote Dr Robert Muller, addressing a conference at the UN University of Peace, “I want to demilitarise the world, but what are these destructive weapons doing in the hands of people with problems? They should be squeezing hands not triggers!” But there are signs that the world is ready to adopt an attitude of spiritual awareness. Witness the growth of the green movement which suggests the love for animals will encompass the human variety in due course. I predict it will become a gradual instinctive aspiration It requires no dogma, evangelism, brain washing or cult status to get it under way. Bringing self awareness to life requires a little introspection with some questions. Is my material wealth really giving me happiness? What is the purpose of my life? What can I do for the world? There are signs, as we approach the new millennium, that the limitations of the consumer society have already arrived. People are searching for alternative life styles and a new expression has been coined. It is called ‘downshifting’ which in basic terms, means shifting down from money worship and looking for something more fulfiling. Clearly, the ‘feel good factor’ is taking on a new meaning. Feeling good is likely to mean ‘feeling good about oneself’ with a zest for doing something useful for humanity. There is an added bonus to altruism, because a research team has shown that people involved in helping others were actually healthier. The explanation was that positive fulfilment of this kind stimulates the immune system. It seems, too, that positive goals improve the bodily functions at every level. In the political arena, it can have a far-reaching effect. For instance, the present trend of an underclass in our society can be stopped in it's tracks once a universal motivation can be established to transform the negative cultures we have created. At a personal level, the dispute with the neighbour, the rude boss, or the family upset, can all be ‘healed’ when positive reflection is introduced. I proclaim that PS soul development encourages dialogue between ethnic and religious groups.
