Appointments

Campbell: strategic comms now “essential” for business Alistair Campbell, the high profile former Communications Director for British PM Tony Blair, previously a part time advisor to Portland, has made the move to full time position within the agency. Campbell is an advocate of the need for companies to improve the standard of their communication: “I have been struck over the years by how few companies and big organisations seem to have a properly thought‐through strategy to manage and promote their reputations and how even successful businesses can’t differentiate between the strategic and tactical. I have also noticed how often their different strands of their communications – whether through the media, digital, public affairs or their own internal comms – don’t work together well.... ... A great deal of nonsense is talked about spin. It is not just legitimate for businesses to consider strategic communications, but essential. It can often be the difference between success and failure.”

A word with you

Sorting out the confusables There is a long list of words that are easily confused with each other. Here are a few more to help you avoid verbal confusion. A big bugbear for many people is the difference between affect and effect. The distinction is quite simple: affect is a verb and effect is a noun. So I can affect you, or have an effect on you (either way, I hope it is a good one). Imply and infer often become entangled. Think of them as a two‐way street. I can imply something to you, or you can infer something from what I say. So “I resent your inferring that I am a useless writer” is the wrong way round; it should be implying. Finally, take a look at oral and verbal. An oral statement is something that is said not written (oral means pertaining to the mouth). The correct opposite is a written statement. Verbal refers to words, so both oral and written statements are verbal. This monthly writing guide is provided by Tony Spencer‐Smith of the corporate editorial consultancy Express Editors (www.expresseditors.com). Contact him on tony.spencersmith@gmail.com if you want to comment or find out more about his writing, editing and training services.

Banks: the end of unsolicited credit card limit increases From July 1st 2012 Australian banks and credit card providers will not longer be able to send unsolicited credit card limit increase offers. How are the banks communicating the changes? A letter sent to this writer from ANZ asks for advance permission to be able to send offers of credit card limit increase. The letter calls these offers “a simpler application” and offer “many simple ways” to provide consent: via the web, a simple SMS text or a dedicated 1800 freecall number. Seems “the end of unsolicited credit offers” from the banks is a marketing challenge they will struggle to overcome if this (crass) example from ANZ Bank is anything to go by.

The rebrand, to be rolled‐out in June, recognises the growth in AAP’s services from traditional news and information content to include a range of publishing and business solutions. In the past 10 years, Australia’s national news agency has enhanced its media services with strong growth in its press release distribution business and the expansion of media monitoring operations. The acquisition of Pagemasters and The Media Research Group saw AAP branch into editorial production and qualitative media analysis. And the recent expansion to New Zealand with editorial and media monitoring testifies to the continuous growth of the company. As part of the rebranding initiative, a new AAP logo has been created and the existing operations have been consolidated into three key business areas – editorial solutions, business solutions and publishing solutions. Sarah Higgins (pic, right), Head of Marketing for AAP, said: "Bringing together our editorial services under one brand, AAP Newswire; our business solutions under Medianet; and publishing under Pagemasters, just made sense. ABC’s Kohn to be vice chair for Religion Journalists association ABC's Rachael Kohn has been named vice chair of the newly founded International Association of Religion Journalists. The organisation was founded recently in a bid to improve the quality of religion journalism and provide training and assistance for journalists at a time when religion is dominating headlines. Kohn is the Producer and Presenter of The Spirit of Things on ABC Radio National and studied and taught religion before entering what she describes as the unique field of religion reporting.

Kohn said the IARJ wanted to improve the level of reporting of a topic that was central to so many world conflicts, but often misunderstood and only superficially reported: "A lot of journalists don't know much about religion, and they're not encouraged to since news bureaus are dominated by very secular culture," she said. She named Islamic fundamentalism as the biggest religious issue facing the world, but said that there was also concern about the polarisation occurring in western traditions, with moves to the right and the left, creating extreme positions that are almost impossible to bridge. The IARJ came into being with the support of the International Centre for Journalists, a non‐profit Washington, DC based organisation dedicated to improving journalism worldwide. Among its aims is the protection of religion journalists who report in countries like Indonesia and Pakistan and face persecution from authorities. Rachael said her role included establishing its mission and goals. She will also work on the IARJ's education committee and aims to develop regional symposia in conjunction with university programs.

Male salaries 30% higher than females in Australia 2. AND difference in Australia is almost double the UK: male salaries 18% higher vs female 3. One area is different: A female PR AD earns more than a male AD According to Greg Savage of Firebrand: “Initially I was very surprised to see the data reflect such a stark contrast between female and male salaries in the Comms/PR/Events sector, particularly as the sector has such a high female representation, and many PR businesses are women‐owned. The data is very current however, and is obtained directly from employees in the marketplace, so I consider it to be the most accurate guide available. However, it's probably true to surmise that many of the senior roles in the larger PR businesses, as well as the marketing field, are held by men and that might well bring the overall male median salary score up.” Savage continues: “It's not clear to me why this salary differential is so much higher in Australia than the UK, but if I had to comment it may be the case that more women have penetrated senior ranks of the PR industry in the UK, bringing the median salaries closer together. I do think it a bridge too far however, to suggest that there are greater levels of salary discrimination in Australia compared to the UK based on these figures. In a future report we plan to dig into the data in much more detail and compare "like‐for‐like" job titles which will reveal a much clearer picture.” “However, we still have to face the fact that this research indicates that on average men are paid 29% more than women in these sectors in Australia. What's more, that is the highest differential of all 6 countries we surveyed...” The one area where females earn more than males in PR in Australia? According to Savage: “Interestingly it's clear that the trend for male salaries being higher is not universal, as we see that with PR Account Director staff–who typically earn a salary of around 90,000–women actually earn more than men.” If you would like to receive a copy of the report or more information, please contact Deborah Musolff from Firebrand Talent Search on 02 8667 8888 or email dmusolff@firebrandtalent.com
