Community News New supermarket, hardware, petrol station and fast food for Beerwah

By Greg Brown For many years there has been much speculation locally that a Coles or a Bunnings or a McDonald’s would be built in Beerwah. That conjecture may just eventuate with a series of applications lodged with Sunshine Coast Council last week by Coles Group Property Developments Ltd for land at the corner of Steve Irwin Way and Roys Road in Beerwah. The applications seek approval for a petrol station, fast food outlet, garden centre/hardware, gym, bulk goods homemaker centre, showroom, supermarket and a zone for service/light industry development. Although the application documents do not specifically name businesses that might occupy the retail spaces, it isn’t hard to speculate considering who Coles Group Property Developments Ltd are. Coles Group Property Developments Ltd is the property development arm of Wesfarmers Limited, which in turn owns Bunnings, Kmart, Officeworks, Target and other major retailers, as well as owning a 15% stake in Coles (which in 2018 became a separately listed public company, Coles Group Ltd). In March this year, Coles Group Property Developments registered the business name Beerwah Homemaker Centre, with its principal place of business being 8 Roys Road, Beerwah. In total, three applications have been lodged by the Coles Group. The first is an application (RAL19/0118) to redraw the current boundaries of the four blocks that make up the 16.5 hectare site to allow for the proposed developments, which are outlined in the subsequent two material change of use applications. As the land is not currently zoned for a commercial use – it is zoned for medium impact industry – one of the material change of use applications (MCU19/0267) is for a full-line supermarket and showroom. The application also makes an official request for council to make special changes to the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme to allow for the development. The second material change of use application (MCU19/0270) covers the service station and fast food outlet. Currently no application has been made covering the other aspects of the proposed Beerwah Homemaker Centre – the garden centre/hardware, the gym, the bulk goods homemaker centre or the one for service/light industry development. Collaboration on membership drive

An innovative collaboration between students from the University of the Sunshine Coast and the Rotary Club of Maleny has provided important information to assist the club in attracting new members of different age groups and from a broader demographic. A survey conducted by the students was designed to determine the level of community knowledge about service clubs active in the Maleny area, particularly the Maleny Rotary Club, the perceived barriers to participation and the main reasons people became members. Club president Sherryl Gregory said she was impressed with the efforts of the two town planning students, Ryan McNeilly-Smith and Richard Wilson, and thankful for the time given by community members who took part in the survey. “While the report found a majority of respondents had a positive view on Rotary, it also confirmed the club’s need to address a number of neutral and negative sentiments identified, many of which really harked back to the Rotary of yesteryear,” Sherryl said. Rotary had changed significantly over recent years and was no longer an organisation living in the past, she said. The survey also found that respondents thought the main appeal of joining Rotary was the range of opportunities available to contribute to the community and, on a personal level, finding a sense of belonging and making new friends. As the club expected, the main identified barriers preventing people from considering membership of Rotary were existing high engagement levels with community groups and a simple lack of time. “We are determined to get the message out that the Rotary Club of Maleny is striving to make it easier for busy professionals, people with family obligations and those engaged in other community organisations to be involved in club projects and social events,” Sherryl said. Members are free to choose their level of commitment and involvement in club projects and attendance at bimonthly dinner meetings. Sherryl is inviting anyone who would like more information on Rotary or on the benefits of joining to contact her on 0476 573 774 or at president.maleny@rotary9600.org.
