Innovative Caloundra interchange opens In an Australian first, the Bruce Highway–Caloundra Road redevelopment is poised to be a functional diverging diamond interchange (DDI) any day now. DDIs have been used in almost 100 locations worldwide, the majority in the United States, reportedly with great success. This innovative design is cost effective because it minimises the project footprint requiring fewer bridges and roads, while tackling congestion, enhancing capacity and improving safety. After a long period of watching, waiting and looking at maps and illustrations, locals will now able to see for themselves how the traffic flow system works. The DDI at Caloundra Road uses synchronised traffic signals, line marking and signage to guide motorists through the interchange. Motorists will have to keep their wits about them as the interchange system involves temporarily driving on what would seem to be the wrong side of the road.
The traffic signals will seamlessly direct cars to cross from the left side of the road carriageway to the right as they go over the interchange, then switch back to the left. The decision to use this DDI approach reduced the clearing of the Beerwah State Forest from 24 hectares down to only eight hectares. And there’s more to come. Over the next 12 months, the project team says it will progressively construct and open other components of the interchange, which will include a number of changes to the entry and exit lanes to and from the highway. It is expected - weather permitting - that the DDI will be fully functional in late 2020.
