Doing Business
Where there’s a Will, there’s a way By Rhonda James
Rhonda James “Have you got a Will?” I asked my two youngest sisters as we sat one day enjoying a coffee. It was a conversation my two sisters never liked having with me. They awkwardly kept drinking their coffee, waiting for the other one to answer first. “I don’t like to think about that sort of stuff,” one sighed. “Don’t have time,” the other chimed in, both hoping that would put an end to the conversation. I asked again. “Have you got a Will?” After hearing a plethora of excuses on why they didn’t, I began to explain. “You both have children. Who is going to take care of them if you were to pass away? Your in-laws? And what about your property, your business? Who would be capable of running your business? Suddenly, one sister was lost in thought as to who would look after her daughter while my other sister was thinking about her business. A business has to be run in such a way that anyone could walk in and keep it running efficiently which means ensuring it remains profitable. Does your business have the systems to enable this to happen? The benefit of being in a high quality franchise system ensures that, if it was to happen to a Franchisee, someone else could jump in and ensure their business was not affected. As an example, at James’ Home Services, our Agreements have a clause that if this was to occur, our Regional Masters would assist in the efficient running of the business pending the sale of the business. Having a Will assists in success continuing for your family, long after you have gone. Where there’s a Will there’s a way to sort these all important life issues.
