Community Groups Morris House Neighbourhood Centre

Sad loss for local community

Contributed by Ann Husband We now have a new partnership with Caloundra Community Centre that enables us to provide increased emergency relief to those in need. However, clients now need to provide more information to access the assistance. For those on a Centrelink payment, a copy of a current Centrelink statement is needed and if assistance with paying a bill is required, a copy of the bill is also required. If help is needed to access Centrelink statements, etc, our volunteers will be able to assist with this. No appointment is necessary, just call in during open times or call 5494 1255 for more information. All our usual services of free internet, free computer use, photocopying and printing for a small fee, JP service on Tuesday mornings, emergency relief, free bread and staple food items are still available. We are open 9.30am-4pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and 9.30am-1pm on Monday and Friday.

The Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) community is deeply saddened to share the news that Gwen Malcolm passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 12 surrounded by her family. Gwen was an energetic, inspirational and caring person, and tireless in her efforts to retain the natural flora and fauna of the Glass House region. Gwen leaves a substantial legacy through her many achievements. In accordance with Gwen's wishes, the family will hold a private farewell. A celebration of Gwen’s life for those who knew Gwen is planned. Gwen has been taken from her family and friends far too soon. GMAN wish the Malcolm family their heartfelt condolences.

Mooloolah Valley Residents Group

Contributed by Jason Carroll A newly established residents’ group has been moving forward on some local issues within the Mooloolah Valley. The group had its second meeting on April 11, chaired by a local resident, and attended by Division 5 councillor Jenny McKay and state Member for Glass House Andrew Powell, who also has some responsibilities for Mooloolah. The federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace and a representative from the police will also attend when possible. At this month’s meeting we had a wide range of topics on the agenda from the local pool and its use, to speeding, signage and general issues. The group encourages residents to submit items for the next agenda and these can be mailed to jasonmooloolah@gmail.com. We also publish our minutes via the Mooloolah Valley Bush Telegraph Facebook page, which anyone from the Mooloolah Valley area can join.

Beerwah CWA update

Contributed by Deb Ives The first Beerwah Tower Green Market for 2019 was held recently and, despite the wet weather, spirits were high. The CWA would like to thank stallholders and patrons alike. The community markets are run by the CWA ladies as their major fundraiser. The next market is planned as a pop-up Mother’s Day event on Saturday, May 11 from 8am–1pm. After the bills and rent have been paid, monies raised at the markets are given to local charities and to the CWA Public Rural Crisis Fund. This time part of the funds raised was donated to the Supporting Teenagers with Education, Mothering and Mentoring (STEMM) program. The program supports pregnant girls and young mothers in a safe, non-judgemental environment with individual support plans developed by trained case managers. Each girl is given the opportunity to develop life skills, parenting, self-worth, healthy relationships, pre and post birth plans, and physical and emotional wellbeing. The program is based at Burnside High School at Nambour and provides services to young mothers from schools across our region. We would like to thank Cr Rick Baberowski for the contribution from his discretionary funding to create the new look Beerwah Tower Green Market promotional material. The Beerwah CWA ladies would love you to join us. We meet once a month at the CWA Hall on Simpson Street. For further details please call Del on 5439 0289. For all stallholder enquires for future markets please email qcwabeerwah@gmail.com.
