On Sunday morning ceremonies were held for Remembrance Day across Glasshouse Country as they were around the nation - people paused to remember those who have died in past and present conflicts.

The ceremonies mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the moment when guns fell silent in 1918, ending World War I. I attended a ceremony at the Peachester Cemetery held by the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch. The short service which included a minute's silence at 11.00am with the haunting tones of the bugler playing the Last Post.

Nev Anning with Allan Walters After Nev’s presentation, I spoke to Nev and Allan Walters. Nev had served in the 2/26 Battalion with Allan’s father Vic Walters, and were in Changi Prisoner of War Camp together. During that time Nev made Allan’s dad a little tobacco tin out of metal from Japanese planes, which he decorated with etchings of the main building in the camp done with a darning needle. Clearly the tobacco tin is a really special memento for Allan. Nev told us rather matter of factly that he did quite a lot of tin work and some of his later projects had much better workmanship.

Following the ceremony, guests were invited to move down to the Wall of Remembrance that acknowledges the local soldiers who served in war, including those that have been laid to rest in other cemeteries mostly overseas. Nev Anning a founding member and now the most senior member of the Beerwah Peachester RSL, shared personal stories of a number of these local soldiers. Having the stories told from someone who knew the individuals and understood their experiences was very moving.

One piece he was particularly proud of was a ‘dixie’ that he etched around the outside of with all the buildings in the camp. This was a thank you for a fellow who had looked after him while he battled cholera while he was there. It is hard to imagine what the lives must have been like for the soldiers in Changi or for any soldiers that serve in war. This reminds me how important it is to stop and pause and think about them on Remembrance Day.
