This week I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has taken the time to complete our

survey.

When we started working on our research project, we weren’t sure how many responses we would receive.

The number is really important to ensure the quality of our data.

As we go to print this week we were getting really close to our target response number.

I am sure there are plenty of people who are as deadline driven as me who will make sure they get it done, in the nick of time, by this Friday so we should make the required number.

I am really keen to see the feedback. As the majority of the surveys have been completed online we haven’t got any idea of what they say.

However, we have had a sneak peek at some of the hard copy surveys that have been returned to the office, which has been really interesting.

And I thought that I should point out that saying we are the best community newspaper in the world is very nice but it won’t give you any advantage in winning the iPads in our random draw!

Cover Story Leigh's memoir from the heart Maleny author and journalist Leigh Robshaw lived in South America and Mexico for more than three years in the 1990s and has written a memoir about her experiences, which is due for publication this Thursday, August 15.

In the book, ‘You Had Me at Hola, In search of love and truth in South America’, Leigh details her experiences living with a Peruvian artisan and selling jewellery in streets and squares spanning Peru to Mexico.

Despite negative stereotypes about Latin Americans proliferating in the US, Leigh says they are some of the friendliest and most hospitable people on the planet and are not to be feared.

“Every time I hear President Trump make demeaning, inaccurate comments about Mexicans and other Latin American cultures, my blood boils,” she said.

“Calling them dirty is just plain wrong. I lived with some of the poorest Mexicans and not only did they take great pride in their homes, their children were clean and well cared for.

“They welcomed me into their lives and shared what little they had with me and I found the same hospitality from Argentina to Brazil and throughout Central America.

   

While parts of South and Central America can be dangerous, with drug cartels and gang violence prevalent in some countries, she says it shouldn’t be seen as a destination for travellers to avoid.

“Machu Picchu, Iguazu Falls, the Amazon, the Galapagos Islands, Carnival in Brazil, the Mayan and Aztec pyramids – there are so many iconic places and events to experience in Latin America and it would be a shame for people to strike it off their bucket lists due to the bad press coming out of the States,” Ms Robshaw said.

“I travelled very rough, sometimes sleeping on beaches and mixing with unscrupulous people. I had a couple of close calls but that was my own stupid fault for venturing into dangerous territory. Fortunately, I came out unscathed with lifelong memories.

“I really hope my book gives people some insight into the true nature of the place and its wonderful people, and encourages anyone with a love of exotic, exciting places to plan their own adventure to Latin America. Lord knows, they could do with the tourism dollars,” she said.

Awards shine bright for another year The official opening of nominations for the seventh annual Caloundra Electorate Community Awards was announced by State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle last week.

The awards, hosted by Mr McArdle, are about recognising the best of the best in the Caloundra electorate, which includes Landsborough and Beerwah townships.

“We are half way through another year but I always look forward to July because it officially marks the opening of the community awards,” Mr McArdle said.

“With each year I am increasingly inspired by the stories that accompany the nominations.

“There are so many dedicated people and organisations who add to the richness of our electorate which extends from Caloundra out to the hinterland.

“We need the community’s help to shine a light on those working hard behind the scenes by completing a nomination today.

“Remember, it isn’t just about the nominees and the winners but also everyone who takes the time to nominate. I strongly encourage the community to help recognise businesses, community groups and outstanding individuals

Peachester park becomes a reality It may be small but the Peachester community definitely knows how to make things happen.

Last week, after a concerted campaign, locals won their claim to have a parcel of state government land, which was earmarked to be sold for housing, handed to Sunshine Coast Council and dedicated as community park land.

And it was a long time coming, with the block being identified as a suitable park 30 years ago.

Dr Anthony Lynham, the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, confirmed that the block on the corner of Peachester Road and Hill Street had been dedicated as a park and recreation reserve with the council being appointed as the trustee.

This is the direct result of a positive information crusade by the Park for Peachester group who took on the job of raising awareness as to why the park land is important to the local community, collating their case into a coherent rationale, documenting this into a professional publication and taking their appeal directly to the Minister.

With the full support of Cr Rick Baberowski, the council open space planning staff negotiated with the state government departmental staff and gained their support for transferring the land to council’s control – a decision that saved the council from possibly having to purchase the land, saving more than $350,000 of ratepayers’ money.

Park for Peachester group members Judy Tomlinson, Sally Joyce, Ray Pulham, Mal and Viki Blaik (absent Mel Driscoll) with Cr Rick Baberowski Minister Lynham said the Palaszczuk government had listened to the local community and decided not to progress with the sale of this block as was initially planned.

“The community’s voice has been very clear on the need for a local park in Peachester for families to enjoy,” Mr Lynham said.

“There has been extensive engagement with the community and the Sunshine Coast Council on deciding the future use of this state land and I thank the residents for their contribution.

“Turning this piece of green space into a community park and recreation reserve is win-win for everyone.”

Cr Baberowski said he had written to the Minister thanking him for his department’s decision.

“Well done to everyone involved but particularly your community’s determined band of well organised and creative advocates who didn’t blink once on the way,” Cr Baberowski said.

“I know the community will be keen to move onto the planning, so I have requested advice on the process from here to assess the site, and bid for budget and resources.

“It will take some time to make this all happen but, in the meantime, the Peachester community can enjoy a moment as rare and well deserved as this one is.”

Park for Peachester group spokesperson Sally Joyce said they appreciated the full support of Cr Baberowski and local state MP Andrew Powell.

“It’s with their support and that of the council staff behind the scenes that we’ve had this win,” she said.

“But mostly we need to thank the community of Peachester who have united in their desire to see this park come to fruition.

“The campaign brought the community closer together and has highlighted the amazing strengths, expertise and abilities of the local people.”

Maleny hosts Queensland premiere of ‘Pilliga Rising’

New environment documentary ‘Pilliga Rising’ will screen for the first time in Queensland at the Maleny Community Centre on Thursday, August 22 from 6-8pm.

Produced in response to the proposed Narrabri coal seam gas project in the Pilliga Forest in northwest New South Wales, the film depicts the inspirational true story of how four community members from small towns in the area rise up against the proposal.

Film director and local Maleny resident Mark Pearce, who has produced more than 20 social impact nature documentaries, describes the film as “consciousness in action”.

Commissioned by The Wilderness Society and produced by Mark’s award-winning production company, Balangara Films, ‘Pilliga Rising’ celebrates the backbone of Australian communities and shows what is at stake if coal seam gas comes to town.

“If there’s one thing viewers will take away from this story it’s the understanding that when you’re in the trenches dealing with the coal seam gas cartel, even if you win life will never be the same,” Mark said.

Lock The Gate (LTG) is hosting the screening in Maleny to create a deeper conversation around the vital environmental values of the northern Sunshine Coast hinterland, where coal exploration permits still exist.

LTG Brisbane coordinator Ellie Smith is actively engaged in protecting lands and communities across Queensland and says the film brings an important message to the community. “’Pilliga Rising’ showcases how community members are united to look after the environment,” she said. “Queenslanders will be inspired by this beautiful film to bind together and protect our own backyard.”

Viewers will be welcomed with drinks and nibbles accompanied by music from the Pantastic Steelband and the Maleny Community Centre will run a cash bar from 6-6.30pm. The evening will also feature a Q&A with producer Mark Pearce, hosted by Steven Lang, and further information about LTG’s campaign.

Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

Green light for smarter Bruce Highway A faster highway commute between the southern Sunshine Coast hinterland and Brisbane is well under way, with 11km of the Bruce Highway from Caboolture to Steve Irwin Way in the design stage and planned for a 2020 construction start.

The $662.5 million joint federal and state funded project was announced back in February and now another project has recently been announced, which will speed up travel times.

The Australian Government has signed off on $13.36 million in funding to support the transformation of the Bruce Highway between the Gateway Motorway and Caloundra Road Interchange into a ‘smart’ freeway.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said that managed motorway technology would bust congestion and reduce travel times on this critical section of the highway.

“Installing electronic freeway management technology will improve traffic flow and motorist safety, particularly during busy peak periods,” Mr Wallace said.

The $13.36 million will fund development activities including a business case for the managed motorway technology and detailed design for incident management capability between Steve Irwin Way and the Caloundra Road Interchange.

“These development phase works are expected to be completed in early 2020, following which the introduction of managed motorway technology will get under way,” Mr Bailey said.

The managed motorway technology includes variable speed limit signs, entry ramp signalling, traffic monitoring cameras, digital message signs providing live updates on traffic conditions and delays, along with signs advising drivers of lane and speed restrictions.

The Bruce Highway – Managed Motorways stage 2 – Gateway Motorway to Caloundra Road interchange project is jointly funded, with the Australian Government committing $84 million and the Queensland Government committing $21 million.

Effects of 5G and electromagnetic radiation Are you concerned about the rollout of 5G in the local area and what electromagnetic radiation (EMR) could mean for your health and the environment? Would like to know more?

A community forum has been organised by concerned locals who are working in cooperation with the 5G Free Sunshine Coast group. It will be held at the Glenview State School hall (corner of Glenview and Stevens Road) this Sunday, August 18 from 2-5pm.

Topics will include how 5G technology works, studies and education around the health effects of EMR, the regulations controlling EMR safety levels from phone towers, Wi-Fi in schools and new technology like 5G. There will also be information on why any telco infrastructure could end up becoming a 5G emitter.

Speakers at the forum will include Raymond Broomhall, a barrister specialising in EMR legal advice from Justice Michael Kirby Chambers in Tasmania; Victor Leach, a radiation health physicist and atmospheric scientist who has worked in the EMR field for the past 40 years; Steve Weller, an IT professional and public representative on the Electromagnetic Energy Reference Group committee of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency; Dr Russell Cooper whose expertise extends across many disciplines of medicine, complementary medicine and mind-body medicine; and Cyril Bourke, an IBM trained engineer and expert in building assessment and how to create safe homes and sleeping spaces.

The agenda will include discussion on how EMR has been affecting local residents and how they are battling against decision makers.

There will also be discussion on how to take action to stop towers going up in your area or have them removed, and how you can make a difference to your health and wellbeing.

There is no charge to attend but gold coin or above donations at the door will assist in paying for the hall hire. Teenagers and children are free.

Light refreshments will be available.

The Goannas have come to town

It was just another afternoon while sitting on his back deck just four months ago when the idea struck Wayne Albert to establish the first Sunshine Coast Indigenous soccer club, now known as the Sunshine Coast Goannas.

Having been pivotal in the formation of the Brisbane Warrigals and a successful player himself, Wayne decided that afternoon that the opportunity to create a team for the Sunshine Coast Indigenous community was needed. After putting the word out and having a great response, the players took to the field in early August for their first game against the Beegees. It was a nil all result.

“Seeing them playing together for the first time was great. There was a strong connection between everyone,” Wayne said.

The team members, aged 16 and above, come from all over the coast and aim to land a spot at this year’s Australian Indigenous Football Championship (AIFC), a tournament to be held in Caboolture on November 8-9.

While the tournament is definitely on the cards, Wayne says that a big driver in getting the team up and running was really to create pathways for the younger Indigenous community.

“It gives them a chance to showcase their talents but also to come together and have a bit of a laugh with each other. That’s really important and seeing them gel so well together was great,” Wayne said.

“I’d love to see the team run out together at the tournament in November but at this stage we’re still raising funds.

“We’ve already had a great deal of support from the public, and Ronnie Woulfe in particular has helped us out immensely with getting things off the ground.”

The Sunshine Coast Goannas will host a sausage sizzle at the Landsborough Hotel’s pig races this Sunday, August 18, and at Bunnings Caloundra on Sunday, August 25.

The Beerwah CWA ladies are super excited to be hosting their first ever Beerwah Scone Festival and you are invited. The Country Women’s Association is renowned for its delicious scones topped with jam and cream - there is truly nothing better.

Cattery planned for Landsborough Another animal facility has been proposed for Amigh Road in Landsborough, with a cattery development application submitted to Sunshine Coast Council last week.

Following the controversial puppy breeding and dog boarding complex planned for land at the end of Amigh Road, the latest application is for a cattery at 36 Amigh Road.

The application – made on behalf of a company called Kitty Worx Pty Ltd – is for a facility to accommodate up to 60 cats, with specific mention that there will be no breeding or other animal husbandry as part of the development.

The 9ha block of land is zoned rural and was once run as the Eco Farm Lodge farm-stay accommodation. The material change of use application seeks to establish a 329m2 cattery, a main reception and office structure, separate storeroom, treatment, laundry and staff room buildings, as well as hard surface areas for parking.

The cattery will generate waste largely comprising

materials associated with the care of cats including faecal waste and associated kitty litter, spoiled cat food and general dust/fur or other material swept up from the ground. A private contracting company will be engaged to collect, remove and dispose of this waste material.

The application report says that noise will not be a problem as it suggests that cats are relatively quiet animals and the other noise sources (cars and equipment) will be consistent with current adjoining land uses.

The report states that although animal keeping is not specifically mentioned as an acceptable (or code assessable) development within the rural zone, it falls under the category of other defined uses and, as such, is impact assessable.

This means the application will be advertised in due course and locals will have the opportunity to make public submissions on the proposal.

“As we mature there is a natural slowing of cellular turnover, which often results in a build up of dead skin cells,” she said. “This treatment is highly beneficial in treating this and getting your skin back to its healthy state”.

Dermablading, also known as dermaplaning, is a highly effective physical exfoliation treatment, which uses a medical-grade blade to gently shave the surface of skin. Sharon Victory, owner of Sunshine Coast Skin Therapies, says that the treatment is completely safe and the benefits of the treatment are fantastic.

Sharon says the treatment is also safe for pregnant and lactating women and is a safe alternative to chemical peels.

Performed by a technician completely freehand, gently gliding over the surface of the skin avoiding the eyebrows and nose, dermablading removes dead skin cells and the fine, vellus hairs commonly referred to as peach fuzz in the process.

Along with “Does it hurt?” (to which the answer is “No, not at all”) another concern clients express is whether their hair will grow back thicker and darker.

“This is a total myth,” Sharon says.

It may seem as though your hair grows back darker but this is simply not true. The treatment removes the dead layer of skin and vellus hair, resulting in your skin appearing much brighter – once the hair grows back it just seems darker.

The benefit of the technician performing the treatment freehand is that they have complete control of the pressure and number of passes in each area. As each person’s skin is different, being able to tailor the treatment delivers a more effective result.

Dermablading is ideal for a variety of complexions including those that are sensitive, with treatment recommended once every 4-7 weeks, with each treatment taking approximately 30 minutes.

“Dermablading removes the fuzz on the face, exfoliating and brightening your skin,” Sharon said.

Sharon says this is dependent on each client’s needs and skin condition and will be discussed during consultation. While dermablading is a safe treatment, it is not recommended for people with active acne or for anyone with excessive facial hair.

“As well as feeling lovely and smooth, it actually aids with product penetration. Clients find that their makeup actually sits better and lasts longer on their skin”.

The Rotary Club of Maleny’s replacement of park bench seating within the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve maintains an historic community service link dating back to the project’s inception.

Soon after the club was chartered in October 1959, an agreement was reached with the then Landsborough Shire Council and Elizabeth Thynne that the Rotary Club of Maleny would create and maintain the reserve and sanctuary as its first major project.

The club immediately set to work preparing the area for its official opening by the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Henry Abel Smith, on December 11, 1960.

Members, their partners and children have since spent thousands of hours clearing the land of a mess of logs and lantana to help turn it into the wonderful attraction it is today.

Club spokesman Rick Vickers said five bench seats installed by the club some years ago were noticeably deteriorating and becoming not only unattractive but possibly unsafe.

“These old seats had reached the end of their useful life, reflecting poorly on the club, which was unfortunate given all previous efforts of members over many years in helping to develop the reserve and maintain the seating,” he said.

Mr Vickers said the five new low maintenance park benches, purchased from funds raised by the club, had a guaranteed life of 25-30 years and would be progressively installed and completed this month.

Coincidently, the local planning committee for Settlers Green on the Maleny Precinct that includes representatives from the Rotary Club became aware of the club’s plans and sought to include its requirement for three seats in the purchase order, resulting in the freight charges being shared.

He urged people in the community who had an interest in these types of local projects to think about joining Rotary, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary in Maleny this year.

“Rotary today is an inclusive organisation and offers members a high level of flexibility in choosing their level of commitment and involvement in all types of club projects, meetings and social events,” Mr Vickers said.

Mobile phone tower troubles Mooloolah residents

Optus plans to build a 33m mobile phone tower on private property at 390 Tunnel Ridge Road, Mooloolah, as first reported in GC&M News (June 5), was a hotly discussed topic at the recent Mooloolah residents group meeting.

The development application is for a material change of use so part of the land currently zoned rural can be used for the telecommunications facility and for it to collocate Vodaphone facilities.

According to the documents submitted to Sunshine Coast Council with the application, the new tower is necessary to relieve congestion on the existing network of voice and data transmitters.

Public submissions were called for with an August 1 deadline.

Many locals at the recent residents meeting knew nothing about the application until just before the community meeting on the evening of August 1.

The council development application web portal shows that only six properly made submissions were received before the deadline.

All six were vehemently against the tower being approved, with the majority citing concerns with unknown health implications as a result of electromagnetic radiation from the towers.

Council’s planning scheme states that houses should be more than 400m from the tower but according to the application documentation the closest residence is only 205m to the east on Valley View Rise with ten houses falling within a 400m radius.

Other concerns included that the 33m tower is not consistent with the rural outlooks and vistas of the Tunnel Ridge Road area.

Optus states that it looked at five other possible sites (Marie Higgs Environmental Reserve, 17 Benzara Lane, 477 Tunnel Ridge Road, 545 Connection Road and Brandenburg Road) to locate a tower but all were unsuitable.

The application will now be evaluated by council’s development assessment unit against the provisions of the planning scheme.

Cost of a stamp could rise by 10 cents

Australia Post has lodged a draft notification with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) seeking an increase in the cost of sending a letter from $1 to $1.10, to come into effect from January 2020.

Australia Post’s group chief executive officer and managing director Christine Holgate said the proposed increase, the first increase in four years, would help keep post offices open and viable.

“Importantly the 60 cent price of concession stamps would be protected and available to 5.7 million Australians, including pensioners and veterans, and the 65 cent seasonal greeting card stamps will stay the same,” Ms Holgate said.

“Last year our letters business lost $190 million – this is after the benefit of significant efficiency savings. It is important that we responsibly address pricing if we are to protect this important service and keep our network of community post offices open.”

The Maleny Community Centre team displayed their knowledge and luck by using their double point joker to best advantage to take out the first prize in the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club trivia night.

The Maleny RSL recently hosted 150 participants who laughed, learnt and enjoyed themselves with trivia from ‘Talking about your Generation’.

The ten rounds of questions on topics from general knowledge, sport, cars and Hollywood to drinks, biscuits and confectionery kept all tables talking while constructing something built in the 1980s from straws, toothpicks and matchsticks.

Proceeds of the night will be split between the Maleny State High School performing arts and other Lions youth projects.

Bushland Group working bee

Contributed by Gordon Reddek The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will hold its next monthly working bee on Tuesday, August 20 from 7.30am to around 10.30am.

This month we plan to continue the weeding operation we started in the reserve last month, when it took us some time to find the worst patches.

This month we plan to get stuck into it.

We also expect to host a group of international students before the working bee so we may end up with some follow-up work after that visit. It should be an interesting working bee.

The Coochin Creek Bushland Group is part of the Sunshine Coast Nature Conservation Program so all are welcome to join us. Participation is free and tea is provided during the working bee.

Participants are advised to wear boots, a longsleeved shirt, long pants and sun hat, and to carry a water bottle. All equipment required, including tick repellant, will be supplied.

The top is the Alexander palm, which is not native to this area. It is distinguishable by the silver sheen on the back of the leaf. The bottom is the piccabeen palm, which is native to this area. It is distinguishable by the row of whiskers growing along the central spine on the back of the leaf.

You Said It Good news for gingerbread lovers

Maggie de Prinse who operates Larikoek Gingerbread will be at the next Witta Market selling her wonderful Dutch gingerbread.

After GC&M News went to print last week with a letter from Maggie, a Beerwah local, she advised us that she had some good news to share with our readers.

Sunshine Coast Council had continued to work with Maggie and has now arranged a new permit for her business.

A council spokesperson has also confirmed to GC&M News that Maggie will still be able to operate from home under the new permit.

Re: Roos/wallaby deaths unacceptable

A letter from Kim Rosenberg (GC&M News, August 7) mentions the number of roos and wallabies injured or killed on the road at Crystal Waters.

In her letter she says that no one stopped to help the injured wallaby and young joey. In fact, the person that discovered the mother wallaby was our camp ground manager on her morning walk who came across the wallaby lying by the side of the road obviously hit by a vehicle.

Kim then says that no one stopped to help with the wallaby. This isn't correct. The manager stopped and within a short time two vehicles had stopped and one then drove to fetch another person and the wallaby with joey was taken in a vehicle for help but both died by the time the trip was over.

Crystal Waters has a no dogs and cats policy, which means our wildlife roams freely on the property (600 acres) allowing roos and wallabies to move without threat. We have a 30kph speed limit but unfortunately some ignore it. Wallabies in particular are skittish and sometimes leap across the road without warning. This means they can leap in front of a car at the last minute suffering injuries. We all try to avoid a hit but it happens.

The Sunshine Coast strip is worse, loosing many of its roo population to accidents and dogs. The local ABC (June 2018) said: "Rapid development on the Sunshine Coast is being blamed for a sudden spike in kangaroo deaths, with wildlife carers and researchers calling for tougher measures to protect the animals from urban sprawl. Re: Wallaby/roo deaths unacceptable

I write in reference to Kim Rosenberg’s letter (GC&M News, September 7). I concur with Kim’s distress over the sad unnecessary deaths of our roos/wallabies and all wildlife on our roads.

I settled in Engle Road in 1990 when it was a quiet country lane. It now resembles a racing track as large vehicles and trucks drive down this narrow road incredibly fast. Last Friday on Engle Road a wallaby was killed. When I checked she was still warm with a bewildered joey beside her.

Of course, many of us need to get to work but I'm making a plea for drivers to drive slowly with an awareness of our wildlife.

Merging madness

At the Big Mower intersection, turning right from Beerwah towards Glass House Mountains, there is much confusion or plain rudeness and aggression among some drivers.

Many times I’ve been in the right-hand lane (turning right) when cars come up the left-hand side and they expect you to brake and slow down to give way to them.

This is not only dangerous and rude but it is wrong. On page 82 in the book 'Your keys to driving in Queensland’, published by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, the rule states that when “giving way when merging … if your lane come to an end, you must give way to traffic already in the lane you are moving to”.

In the Big Mower situation above, once the right-hand turn has been completed, traffic in the left lane is directed to merge into the right lane as the left lane comes to an end.

This merging traffic gives way to traffic in the right lane that is continuing through. Please see the diagrams/examples below for clarification.

Re: Dogs in Maleny

Your otherwise excellent publication used a misleading headline “Poor behaviour may see dogs banned in Maleny” (July 31 edition).

I read the accompanying story twice and nowhere in the text are the words “poor behaviour” used.

This unfortunate lapse insults the majority of responsible dog owners who use the Maleny Precinct on a regular basis.

Council is neglecting its duty to Maleny dog owners to provide a suitable fenced dog park where dogs can run around off leash. As your article notes, Landsborough, Beerwah, Glasshouse and Palmview all have established fenced dog parks. Instead, the Maleny Showgrounds (not owned by council) is the only place where dogs can be let off leash. However, this area is not really satisfactory as it is unfenced and is shared with people exercising horses.

So rather than threatening dog owners with the prospect of a $243 fine (per dog) or airing a request to have the Maleny Precinct declared a no-dog zone, council should provide a viable alternative.

I never knew this place existed. However, the council seems to bow to pressure from the town’s loudest criers. Look at what we ended up with at Cooke Park as a result of the local whingers? The kids suffered then and dogs will suffer next.

Dee Chapman I cringe at dog parks. If you chat to professional dog trainers they will tell you they are dangerous and wouldn't take them there. I'm for dogs on leads. Dogs are still happy to get out and adventure on leads. Dog drinking taps would be great.

More education is needed for dog owners including respect of other dog owners especially if dogs are in training or assistance dogs. They don't want to be interrupted by dog on the loose while out and about.

It's also not teaching dogs boundaries.

I do see dog owners with dogs off leash that control their dogs and having a great time too It's really just being mindful and respectful of rules.

Adults need to respect rules too. If you get a fine, then suck it up for doing the wrong thing.

Federal Member for Fisher Federal grants available now for hinterland community groups and

schools The Morrison government has recently opened two new grant rounds to help the volunteer groups and schools that are at the heart of our community to make the Sunshine Coast hinterland a better place to live, work and raise a family.

First, the government has allocated $150,000 to our electorate of Fisher for this financial year to make small scale grants for community groups under the Stronger Communities Programme.

Grants between $2,500 and $20,000 are available for community groups to upgrade their facilities or buy new equipment.

In previous rounds of this program in Fisher we have won grants for many projects including an underground water system at Beerwah Sportsground and an archive room for Peachester Historical Society.

If your community group is interested in applying for funding under this grant, the first stage is to get an expression of interest form from my office ASAP at the contact details below.

The Morrison government is also providing up to $200,000 this year for grants for smaller school projects in Fisher under the Local Schools Community Fund.

The fund is open to applications from all schools in Fisher, including government, Catholic and independent schools, though no individual school is guaranteed funding.

Each school can apply for funding for one project of between $1,000 and $20,000 and the grant can cover the whole or part of the cost of the project.

Projects can include things like refurbishments, new sports or IT equipment, improved library or music facilities, air-conditioning or accessibility upgrades among many more. Applications close on September 30. Contact my office to find out how to apply.

Lower taxes for hinterland workers This month the Coalition government delivered on its promise to give workers all over Australia, including in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, bigger tax cuts.

Single income earners making up to $126,000 will receive up to $1,080, or $2,160 for dual income couples, back in their 2018/19 tax return, so get yours in as soon as you can!

In future years we have also increased the top threshold of the 19 cents in the dollar tax bracket, increased the low income tax offset and reduced the 32.5 cents in the dollar tax rate to 30 cents, so that you will pay less tax.

All of this means that hinterland workers will get to keep much more of their own money.

But it will also boost our economy, help more tourists to visit the Sunshine Coast and encourage locals to get out to our shops, cafés and restaurants.

State Member for Glass House Pine-tastic Pineapple Field Day Over the course of two days last month, a pineapple field day was held at Elimbah. A giant celebration of pineapple farming in Queensland, the event was an enjoyable and fantastic showcase of agriculture in the Glass House region.

As one of, if not the primary event in the Australian pineapple industry calendar, the field days provided opportunities for growers to network with each other and stakeholders, as well as to showcase the quality of their products. Over the two days we saw machinery displays; had tours on harvesting, land preparation, fumigating, hilling and planting; heard lectures from industry professionals; and attended a gala dinner.

The event was hosted at Fullerton Farms, owned by a long-standing Elimbah and Glass House Mountains family, and organised by GrowCom Australia, Australian Pineapples and the Elimbah Co-Op. I was privileged to sponsor the gathering and arranged for my colleague, the Member for Gympie and Shadow Minister for Agriculture Tony Perrett, to attend with me.

A park for Peachester Together with the local community we’ve secured a park for Peachester!

The state government has officially transferred the block of land on the corner of High Street and Kilcoy-Beerwah Road to the Sunshine Coast Council as a park and recreation reserve. Huge congratulations to Ray Pulham, Sally Joyce, Judy Tomlinson, Melissa Driscoll and the entire community on pushing for and achieving this fantastic outcome! The park was rightfully yours all along and should never have been put up for sale, so I am so glad to have been able to help you formally acquire it from the government.

As highlighted in the publication ‘A park for Peachester’, written and published by locals, and handed to the Minister for Natural Resources, this space has been eyed off by the community for the better part of 30 years to use as a dedicated green space. This is a victory for the community that is well worth celebrating, ideally in the new park! Picnic anyone?

Mobile offices Last week I travelled the northern half of the Glass House electorate holding mobile offices in Glass House Mountains, Peachester, Beerwah, Beerburruum, Maleny, Bald Knob, Conondale, Witta, Montville, Flaxton, Eudlo and Mooloolah Valley.

Common issues raised with me included the north coast rail duplication, concerns with local state schools, NBN (please talk to your federal MP about this as unfortunately I have no jurisdiction on the NBN), the idea of a park run in Maleny (yes please!), the need for a shared workspace for work-from-home professionals and the ongoing frustration that is roadside vegetation management in the hinterland.

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Congrats to cross country!

I’d like to share my congratulations to Maleny Golf and Rotary on a successful cross country event. The Queensland Cross Country Championships were great for the local economy and extremely well managed by all those involved. Congrats as well to all the runners!

Northern wetlands public trails Council and Unitywater are in the final stages of arranging formal public access around the northern wetlands in the Maleny community precinct. I know the community is looking forward with keen anticipation for this project’s completion.

Together we are working on producing signage along the track and finalising a small section of unfinished pathway so that the trails have safe and stable connections throughout. I’ll be sure to update you all when the official opening date is set.

Mooloolah community meeting Our last community meeting was well attended, with particular interest in the development application for an Optus telecommunications tower on Tunnel Ridge Road. Other issues raised were concerns about new development, heavy vehicles and access concerns.

I sincerely thank the community for their feedback at these forums. Many thanks to Jason Carroll for coordinating the agenda and other meeting essentials for us over the past months.

I have to share that it’s been quite difficult to find a regular date and time to hold these community meetings. Andrew Powell, Andrew Wallace and I truly value this community’s input and these meetings are such a great way to get this feedback. I am working with both MPs’ offices to find a next meeting date and will advise the community when something is booked.

Telecommunications facility proposed As mentioned, a development application was recently lodged by Optus for a new telecommunications tower and facility at 390 Tunnel Ridge Road in Mooloolah. The public notification period ended at the beginning of the month and council received four submissions during that time. Council officers will now review these submissions and complete the assessment in accordance with the planning scheme. We expect to have a recommendation on the application by the end of September, so stay tuned.

Brandenburg Road upgrade As part of council’s sealed road network subprogram, Brandenburg Road was recently approved for investigative works and designs to improve a section of the road. I thank all the residents of the nearby area for your continued lobbying and working with council to upgrade this difficult piece of road infrastructure. Now it’s crucial for council to have all the detailed information required before budget bids. While I don’t expect any impact on traffic flow at this time, I appreciate the community’s continued patience and consideration of council officers.

Sunrise Lane, Woombye Some time ago a new road name, Sunrise Lane, was proposed for the western section of Jacksons Road West in Woombye. This proposal has now been finalised and nearby property owners have been advised. So keep a lookout for the new Sunrise Lane!

A picture paints a 1000 words but there is even more to the story behind the exhibition ‘100: A celebration of Queensland’s oldest residents’, which is part of the Centenarian Portrait Project by Teenagers.

The project saw 100 teenage artists working side-by-side with 100 of the state’s oldest residents to create their portraits and soon the pieces of art will be on display at the Seven Hills Hub in Brisbane.

Rose Connors Dance, from the notIlga with artist Hannah for-profit arts organisation Embraced Inc, is the driving force behind the exhibition, which is sponsored by key partners Estia Health, the Queensland Government and supported by the Australian Human Rights Commission.

The young artists - aged 15-19 years - come from school, TAFE, university and within our community. They have been teamed up with the 100-year-old participants from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

One of the participants, 100-year-old Ilga, a resident of Mount Coolum, is the face of 15-year-old Hannah’s painting.

Ms Connors Dance, who founded Embraced, said that just like all of the centenarians, Ilga’s story was rich in history.

“Ilga was born in Latvia in 1919 before she fled to Germany during the Russian invasion and eventually ended up in Melbourne in 1949,” Ms Connors Dance said.

“Ilga and her husband went on to purchase a fruit orchard and chicken farm.

These are the stories we often forget to ask the older generation who helped shape Australia into the place it is today.”

The launch of the exhibition coincides with the start of Queensland Seniors Week, which is designed to change the community’s attitudes towards the older generation.

‘100: A celebration of Queensland’s oldest residents’ will be open to the public from August 17-September 1 between 11am-5pm daily at Seven Hills Hub, 28 Tallowwood Street, Seven Hills. The exhibition is free and wheelchair accessible.

A lack of transport can sometimes make getting out and socialising a little trickier. Glasshouse Country Care understands this and has designed its social support programs to ensure everyone has the opportunity to be involved in the various activities on offer.

If you’re 65 years and over and interested in meeting new people and making friends, Glasshouse Country Care’s social support program runs daily activities from its premises in Beerwah. Program activities are designed to enrich and stimulate, and offer the opportunity for people with common interests to come together and socialise.

Ann McQuay, from Glasshouse Country Care, says those without transport are often limited in how they can get involved in local groups but the social support program makes sure everyone can get involved.

“We have two buses on hand and offer our clients a door-to-door pick up service to make sure they’re able to enjoy all our activities on offer,” she said.

Manufactured home • Have your solicitor check documentation to provide advice on all matters including how the site rent can be increased, what costs you must pay for, your rights if the park is sold or if you are required to move your manufactured home.

• Consider obtaining a building and pest inspection.

• You will usually have to continue to pay rent for as long as your home is on the site (even if you are no longer living in it).

Retirement village • Inspect the unit that is for sale and make sure that you are happy with it.

• Have your solicitor check all documentation and note the ingoing contributions, exit fees, general services charge (and how it can be increased) and any fees for maintenance and capital replacement.

• Contact Centrelink to see whether your pension will be affected by the transaction.

• Exit fees are often calculated by having regard to

the ingoing contributions you pay when moving into a retirement village, although sometimes exit fees are calculated based on a new resident’s ingoing contribution and the length of time you have lived at the village. For example, the exit fee may be 5% of the ingoing contribution for each year of residence up to a maximum of 35% of your ingoing contribution.

You can therefore usually calculate what you will receive if you leave at any time.

• When you leave a retirement village, your obligation to pay the full amount of the general services charge may continue for 90 days, unless your home sells earlier. Residents whose unit remains unsold after 90 days may then have a continuing obligation to pay part of the general services charge for up to 9 months after termination.

• Village operators must pay out the exit entitlement if a unit remains unsold for 18 months.

Residents step back in time for a night Residents from Southern Cross Care's Caloundra Rise retirement village were treated to an evening of fun at the village’s event of the year. The Settlers Dinner, an event wholly organised by members and volunteers from the village residents committee, saw neighbours come together to enjoy a night of fun, food and friendship.

More than 150 attended the dinner, which village manager Peter Snell says was a highlight of the village’s events calendar.

In the Garden Saving your seed is easy

You like gardening and growing things and have decided to move on from buying punnets of seedlings to growing them from packet seed yourself.

Well done … it’s a satisfying thing being able to follow the growth of your treasured plants from the very start of their life cycle until the very end.

So, what’s the next stage in your gardening adventure? It’s collecting your own seed, of course.

A couple of years ago, I decided to let some veges I grow go to seed so that I could collect and save seed for the next crop.

Through a bit of trial and error, I seem to be able to at least keep enough seed to carry my planting schedule through each year.

Here’s some tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way.

Collect seed from non-hybridised varieties only. Hybrids won’t stay true to type. You want to stick with named or heirloom varieties so that they produce consistent offspring that resemble their parents.

Leave the biggest, best and strongest to go to seed. It’s difficult to let the cream of your crop go to seed but you want to keep the best genetics going, not the weakest.

Don’t collect it if it’s diseased or damaged. This will only spread the disease problem to your next crop.

Start with the easy ones first. This includes beans, lettuce and tomatoes.

You might need to protect the fruiting bodies, where the seed develops, from marauders such as mice and rats, parrots, possums, caterpillars, snails and slugs, as well as from the elements, so they aren’t sun, rain or wind damaged.

Learn to recognise when they are ripe and ready to collect. It’s easy with some – like tomatoes – but it can be trickier with others – like herbs. Pick them too soon and they’re too undeveloped, leave them too late and they’ll throw their seed and you’ll lose them. This learning is best done through research (books or websites) or watching what happens to your plants that go to seed.

Dry the seed out well before storing. Different seed will require different approaches and different amounts of time to dry.

Use paper to store the seed – bags, envelopes, satchels. Don’t use plastic containers. Glass jars are OK for larger seed but put a piece of absorbent paper in the jar to take up any moisture that comes from the seed.

Label your seeds well. Mark the packet with the name and the date you collected them. Use a different packet each time you collect – don’t just keep adding to the same packet, otherwise you’ll have old seed mixed with new seed.

Use the older seed first when you’re sowing but don’t keep the seed longer than two years. Some – like lettuce – lose their viability quickly and can only be kept for a year.

Store them in a dry, dark, cool place. A smaller garden shed in the sun isn’t the best place as the temperature climbs inside to very high levels. A fridge is the ultimate seed storage space.

With your larger seeds, give them a light spray with a fungicide product and let that dry before storing them. That way you’ll reduce any fungus or mildews from developing and affecting their viability or growth when they germinate.

Make sure you keep saving small amounts of seed regularly, as sometimes the seeds will be duds and you don’t want to be stuck with a big bag of useless seed and no back up supplies.

Watermelon

Botanically speaking, watermelon is a fruit not a vege (but then again so are capsicums, tomatoes, eggplants, beans, peas and zucchinis).

Watermelons – and rockmelons – are slow ripeners, so if you want to have them ready to eat this summer, you’ll need to grow them now.

If you’re not that patient, just buy them from the shops during summer when they are in season and at their best.

First thing to note is that they need a lot of space to run free, so not everyone has the space to grow a decent watermelon plant or two. But if you’ve got a corner of the yard that you can give over for six months, or you have a large ornamental garden bed with little or no ground covers or low plants, you can grow watermelons.

Make sure the place you want to grow them gets plenty of sun and is free draining.

Prepare the area with compost and animal manures, as watermelon are hungry plants and like rich conditions.

To improve drainage, mound up the soil where you are going to plant them.

Plant the seed like you would any of the other cucurbits – that is twice as deep as they are wide, so about 2cm deep. Don’t be bothered keeping seeds from a commercially bought watermelon. Buy a packet of certified seed so that you know what you’re going to get. It’s best to plant the seed where you want them to grow.

If you’re pressed, you can find seedlings in most garden centres. Just be very careful with the roots when you are transplanting them.

Put three plants together in one clump (in a triangle 15cm apart) rather than spacing them right out, as they’ll be easier to look after this way and they’ll all find their own path when they start spreading.

Once they’re up and growing, make sure you mulch well and water every other day. Don’t let them dry out as they suffer from water stress very easily.

Train where the runners grow to keep them away from areas that are mown, or train them to grow along and up a fence.

They will send down roots along their runners so don’t pull them up once they’ve reached this stage.

Watermelons have shallow roots, so you’ll need to fertilise fairly regularly.

Once they start to flower you will see they have separate male and female flowers.

Normally bees will do the job of pollinating but if you don’t see many bees you will have to do their job by picking a male flower and dabbing the pollen onto the female flower part (it’s called a stigma). The first few female flowers on each runner will generally give you the best fruit.

Lots of things like to eat watermelons as they are developing, including brush turkeys, rats, parrots and wallabies.

As the humidity increases, they’ll also suffer from mildew and fungus.

But eventually you will have some great tasting (and hopefully big) watermelon to pick and eat come next summer.

From the churches Daydreaming When I was a kid, I was a bit of a daydreamer. On the way home from school on the bus Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be staring out the window watching the world go by, just thinking and letting my imagination do its thing.

As I was day dreaming Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be thinking about my day, stuff I was dealing with but most of all Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be thinking about what I wanted my world to be like.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d sometimes imagine that I could fly or that I had a sweet car, that I was super strong or that I was performing music in front of all my mates.

Imagination - an incredible gift that all kids seem to have but we as adults seem to forget about.

Why is that? Imagination and daydreaming are powerful processes for creativity, problem-solving, reflection and building resilience. Essentially, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good for our mental health, just like dreaming is when we are asleep. I would also like to argue that daydreaming is a way for us to create space in our life.

They feel that it is childish and not an efficient use of time to allow themselves to stop working or socialising for a few minutes. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always just go go go go go!

2. They have filled each day with constant stimulation from smart phones, TV, gaming, work or general tasks so there literally is no time to stop, rest and change into a slower gear.

The Bible says that God used his incredible imagination to create the heavens and the earth.

That is absolutely amazing. I mean, think about it.

He came up with the idea of giraffes, angler fish, condors, cyanobacteriaâ&#x20AC;Ś. humans. I can imagine God sitting in heaven with his version of a cafĂŠ napkin drawing a picture of a giraffe and saying: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hmmm yeah, this would be really cool, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like a horse but with a really long neck, I think it should be yellowâ&#x20AC;?.

Little Athletics Glasshouse Little Athletics celebrates 25 years this year. The club has grown from humble beginnings to 168 athletes registered in the 2018/2019 season.

Originally run from the Bulldogs football field in Beerwah, Glasshouse Little Athletics moved to its new home at Skippy Park, Landsborough in 2011.

These purpose built facilities have helped the club grow into one of the most popular clubs in the region. For two of the past three years the club has won the award for the highest number of member re-registrations of any club in the state.

The club has also benefited greatly from local families who have volunteered and dedicated many hours over the years. One such volunteer, Neil Sutton, whose talented son Rowan graduated from the club in 2014, continues to help out at the club to this very day. In 2017, Neil was awarded Little Athletics Queensland’s Volunteer of the Year award for his dedication to the club and Little Athletics.

A current committee spokesperson said that the club was very lucky to have such a great group of people like Neil who volunteered for the kids of Glasshouse Little Athletics.

“We also had some amazing coaches in the last couple of years. Brett and Megan Standring, whose children had long since left Little As, offer their time

to coach our kids and have helped our club achieve an amazing number of state qualifiers.

“Thank you to them and to all of our current volunteers who work so hard making it a fun place for our Glasshouse kids to be no matter their level of ability.”

Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On Sunday, August 4 Donna Manning and Stuart Craig played Helen Andrews and Kath Smith in a patchy game of association croquet. Helen and Kath made nine hoops to their opponents’ eight.

The afternoon was enlivened by several visitors Nic Cram, Frances Harper and Wallace Roy. Thirteen people from Range Care plus four staff came to the club on Tuesday and were well catered for. Eight played golf croquet, while the rest enjoyed board games inside. A most enjoyable time was had by all.

Nestled in the high-rise apartments of Southport, the Southport lawns and club (pictured) were a good venue for the second division matches in the Gold Coast Tweed region tournaments recently.

Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays.

These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are on Thursdays and Sundays at 1pm for 1.30pm.
