The Rotary Club of Maleny’s replacement of park bench seating within the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve maintains an historic community service link dating back to the project’s inception. Soon after the club was chartered in October 1959, an agreement was reached with the then Landsborough Shire Council and Elizabeth Thynne that the Rotary Club of Maleny would create and maintain the reserve and sanctuary as its first major project. The club immediately set to work preparing the area for its official opening by the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Henry Abel Smith, on December 11, 1960. Members, their partners and children have since spent thousands of hours clearing the land of a mess of logs and lantana to help turn it into the wonderful attraction it is today. Club spokesman Rick Vickers said five bench seats installed by the club some years ago were noticeably deteriorating and becoming not only unattractive but possibly unsafe. “These old seats had reached the end of their useful life, reflecting poorly on the club, which was unfortunate given all previous efforts of members over many years in helping to develop the reserve and maintain the seating,” he said. Mr Vickers said the five new low maintenance park benches, purchased from funds raised by the club, had a guaranteed life of 25-30 years and would be progressively installed and completed this month. Coincidently, the local planning committee for Settlers Green on the Maleny Precinct that includes representatives from the Rotary Club became aware of the club’s plans and sought to include its requirement for three seats in the purchase order, resulting in the freight charges being shared. He urged people in the community who had an interest in these types of local projects to think about joining Rotary, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary in Maleny this year. “Rotary today is an inclusive organisation and offers members a high level of flexibility in choosing their level of commitment and involvement in all types of club projects, meetings and social events,” Mr Vickers said.
