Jeremy Irons and Dev (Slumdog Millionaire and Exotic Marigold Hotel) Patel play the major leads in ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’, to be screened by the Maleny Film Society on Saturday, August 13 in the Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street. This biographical drama from scriptwriter/producer Matt Brown, is based on a fascinating true story of mentorship. Hardy (Irons) from Trinity College Cambridge mentors Madras-born mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanufan (Patel), who in 1913 posted his intuitive theories to England and was beckoned across the continents to share them. Proving his theories grew into a long-term struggle. Atheist, Hardy, and Hindu, Ramanufan, found a middle ground in mathematics. The two mathematicians were encouraged by Bertrand Russell (Jeremy Northam) to challenge the academic establishment in a country that was soon to suffer the cold privations of a World War. A supporting short film called Fish was a favourite at Gympie’s Heart of Gold film festival, a great example of visual irony. Doors open at 6.00pm for dinner catered by Lumbini Restaurant, with drinks bar and tea/coffee stand with home-made treats. Screening is at 7.15pm. MFS members may pre-book at Maleny Information Centre or on-line. Membership is also available on-line. www.malenyfilmsociety.info
