The Look of Love Friday 26 April – Thursday 9 May

Love is All You Need Den skaldede frisør

Friday 19 April – Thursday 2 May

The Look of Love invites you to enter the plush velvet world of Paul Raymond, the notorious porn baron and property tycoon who became known as the ‘King of Soho’. Michael Winterbottom's stylish, energetic biography follows Raymond from the opening of his first ‘gentleman's club’ in 1958 to his astonishing rise as the owner of many clubs and top shelf magazines. Vast wealth doesn't necessarily bring happiness as Raymond fights the hypocrisy of British sexual mores and his own tragic failings. Steve Coogan gives one of his best performances in a film that cleverly reflects its times through a changing aesthetic and a killer soundtrack.

The screening on Wednesday 1 May (17.50) will be introduced by David Archibald as part of GFT’s Contemporary Cinema Course.

Director Michael Winterbottom
Cast Steve Coogan, Anna Friel, Imogen Poots UK/USA 2013, 1h41m, 18

Director Susanne Bier / Cast Pierce Brosnan, Trine Dyrholm, Paprika Steen Denmark/Sweden/Italy/France/Germany 2012, 1h56m, Danish, Italian & English with subtitles, 15

Tired of shrill, soulless Hollywood romantic comedies? Susanne Bier’s delightful Love is All You Need could restore your faith in the entire genre. Recovering from chemotherapy, Trine Dyrholm’s Ida discovers her boorish husband’s infidelity in the worst possible way. She leaves alone for their daughter’s dream wedding at a beautiful Italian villa in Sorrento. When soon to be ex-hubby joins the wedding party with his new conquest, the family’s ugly squabbles leave strait-laced widower Philip (Pierce Brosnan) wondering if his son has made the right choice. A sparkling, sun-kissed romantic charmer that will prove irresistible to anyone who believes that love can conquer all obstacles.

Rebellion L'ordre et la morale Friday 26 – Monday 29 April In this gritty thriller, set in the tropical landscapes of the New Caledonia jungle, a principled police negotiator becomes caught up in the territory’s struggle for emancipation. When rebels kill four gendarmes and take thirty hostages, Captain Philippe Legorjus travels to the French Melanesian territory in the South Pacific to restore order. Director Mathieu Kassovitz’s (La Haine) film pairs high-octane action sequences with an intricate plot about how the insidious nature of politics and pride can undercut the efforts of even the most admirable men on both sides. I’m So Excited!

Los amantes pasajeros Friday 3 – Thursday 23 May Pedro Almodóvar returns to his crazy comedy roots with the gloriously camp I’m So Excited! When passengers and crew face a life-threatening situation on board a plane flying to Mexico City, candid confessions – as well as musical interludes – help them ward off fears of imminent death. With lots of outre gags and candy-coloured copulation, this outrageous sex comedy stars many Almodóvar favourites including Cecilia Roth (All About My Mother), Javier Cámara (Talk to Her) and Lola Duenas (Volver), as well as cameos from Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas. Ridiculously good fun. [Gives] a whole new meaning to the word ‘cockpit’. The Gatekeepers Friday 3 – Tuesday 7 May Director Dror Moreh has achieved a real coup in The Gatekeepers, persuading six former leaders of the Israeli secret service agency Shin Bet to speak on camera for the first time. They provide a unique perspective on the IsraeliPalestinian conflict over the past fifty years, revealing what they were prepared to do to protect their country and the moral and ethical dilemmas that confronted them. One of the years most important and compelling documentaries, it is reminiscent of The Fog of War in the confessional intimacy of its testimony and the valuable insights it provides. Thursday Till Sunday De jueves a domingo Wednesday 8 (16.10 & 20.35) & Thursday 9 May (13.50 & 18.20) Chilean writer-director Dominga Sotomayor’s remarkably assured debut takes place over the course of a long car journey from Santiago to a quiet vacation spot up north. The focus is on ten-year-old Lucia: as stunning desert landscapes glide past and her little brother plays beside her, she notices more and more strains between her parents in the front seat. Featuring a performance of watchful intelligence and quiet vulnerability from Santi Ahumada as Lucia, this is a subtle, poignant, and faultlessly played portrait of a marital break from the child’s point of view. A Hijacking Kapringen Friday 10 – Thursday 23 May (except Tuesday 21 May) The sweaty, claustrophobic reality of being held captive at sea is captured with an unusual level of authenticity in this riveting Danish thriller. In the middle of the Indian Ocean, a Danish freighter is captured by Somali pirates. They demand an enormous ransom for the safe return of the ship and crew. The flinty, ice-cool head of the shipping company assumes responsibility for the negotiations and refuses to give in to their demands. As weeks of stalemate pass, the crew begin to fear for their lives and surrender to despair in a tense, simmering drama with all the nail-biting immediacy of a news bulletin.

Dedicated priest Julian (Ricardo Darin) fights an uphill battle to bring food, medicine and education to the community. He is joined by Father Nicolas (Jeremie Renier), the sole survivor of a military massacre in the Amazon. The two priests face an impossible situation in a gripping tale of a fight for the soul of a city.

The Great Gatsby

Something in the Air

Friday 17 – Thursday 30 May

Friday 24 May – Thursday 6 June

Roll up, roll up for Baz Luhrmann’s muchanticipated dazzling epic featuring extravagant visuals, a stonking soundtrack and stellar cast. This unique adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘Great American Novel’ is set in New York in the summer of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing the American Dream, would-be writer Nick (Tobey Maguire) moves from the Midwest and lands next door to mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). Drawn into the captivating world of the superrich, Nick bears witness to impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy.

The events of May 1968 are a defining moment in 20th century French identity. Olivier Assayas’ semiautobiographical drama is a love letter to the legacy and possibilities of the period. Set in 1971, it follows teenager Gilles as he tries to balance political idealism, artistic ambition and a hunger for love. He finds a soulmate in fellow idealist Christine. When unrest returns to the streets of Paris, they spend an endless summer at an Italian villa in a giddy atmosphere of intellectual curiosity, chaotic parties and romantic longing. An impeccable evocation of the music and moods of the 1970s lends added allure to one of Assayas’ most personal projects.

The Stoker Kochegar Friday 24 – Sunday 26 May Set in the mid 1990s outside St. Petersburg, The Stoker tells the story of Major Skryabin, a shell-shocked veteran of the Afghan-Soviet War, who works as a stoker. Living in the incinerator room, the Major shovels coal all day and fills his spare time writing a novel about a Russian criminal, whilst turning a blind eye to his former military comrade-turned-hitman, the Sergeant, who arrives to dispose of bodies. But even our compliant stoker has his limits… This disturbing, minimalist, pitch-black comedy/drama gradually assumes considerable power as director Aleksey Balabanov deftly teases our expectations, most notably with an ironic jaunty Latin-inflected, electro-folk score which works to perfection. Thérèse Desqueyroux

Friday 31 May – Sunday 16 June

Friday 7 – Thursday 20 June

Mad Men meets The Artist in Populaire, a superbly crafted, finely acted debut feature from writer-director Régis Roinsard, which opened Glasgow Film Festival this February. A retro rom-com set in 1958, Normandy, it tells the tale of a young French secretary who, with the help of her highly persuasive boss, hammers her way to becoming one of the fastest typists on the planet. This Gallic charmer boasts immaculate 1950s styling, is loaded with vintage Hollywood references and stars the mightily appealing Romain Duris and Déborah François.

The final film from the late Claude Miller is an elegant adaptation of the François Mauriac novel set in aplayer painterly vision of the pine-forests of southwest France. Audrey Tautou stars as Thérèse, a young woman who marries wealthy landowner Bernard (Gilles Lellouche). More interested in his dogs and the local hunt than their marriage, she is soon reconciled to a loveless but privileged existence. However, when Bernard’s sister, Anne, falls passionately in love with a dashing young Portuguese man, Thérèse cannot help but compare their relationship with her own and begins to think about how to escape her stifling existence.

Much Ado About Nothing

Before Midnight

Friday 14 – Thursday 27 June

From Friday 21 June

We’re delighted to bring back our Glasgow Film Festival 2013 Closing Gala, Much Ado About Nothing. After completing filming on 2012’s biggest blockbuster, Avengers Assemble, Joss Whedon turned his attention to this passion project, shooting it in his own home in only twelve days with many of the stars of his previous movies and TV shows. The result is a sparkling retelling of the Shakespeare comedy that retains the Bard’s dialogue but updates it to a modern day setting, as two couples debate their respective feelings on love and marriage. This is a 400-year-old rom-com that’s just as witty and relevant today.

One of the great movie romances of the modern era achieves its richest and fullest expression in Before Midnight. If 1994's Before Sunrise was a touching paean to possibility and 2004's Before Sunset a piercing ode to regret, then Before Midnight encompasses all these feelings and more within a fullbodied portrait of a devoted couple facing early middle-age. Exquisite, melancholy, hilarious and cathartic, Richard Linklater’s third walking-and-talking collaboration with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy turns a summer night’s Grecian idyll into a typically digressive and cumulatively overwhelming essay on the joys and frustrations of long-term commitment and parenthood. Before Sunrise / Before Sunset Sunday 23 June (14.30) The first film in Richard Linklater’s Before… trilogy is a sweet, intelligent romantic comedy set against the stunning backdrop of Vienna. Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a young American travelling through Europe, meets French student Celine (Julie Delpy) on a train. Leaving the train together, they begin exploring the Austrian capital, walking and talking into the small hours of the morning and slowly falling in love as the minutes towards Jesse’s return to the US... In the sequel we find Jesse, now a writer enjoying success with a novel about a one-night stand, bumping into Celine in Paris. The couple steal away on a stroll around the city but, no longer hopeful young things with life spread out before them, they must now confess to disappointments and resentments. The result is an honest but affectionate portrait of an amorphous romance. Scarecrow How can a film with such brilliant performances by Al Pacino and Gene Hackman be so little known or seldom seen? Winner of the Cannes Palme d’Or in 1973, Jerry Schaztberg’s haunting Scarecrow is a film ripe for re-discovery. This 40th anniversary screening confirms the poignancy of this tale of lost souls and broken dreams. Hackman’s cynical, angry Max keeps the world at arm’s length until Pacino’s Lionel offers him his last match. A simple act of kindness inspires a friendship between two drifters that takes them on the road for a visit to Max’s sister and a meeting with the pregnant girl that Lionel abandoned. Trashed

Sunday 2 June (18.10)

Tuesday 4 June (18.15)

Widely considered to be the crown jewel of Kashmir, Dal Lake is a sprawling aquatic community where erupting political violence often distracts from the natural beauty. When working-class boatman Gulzar plans to skip town with his best friend Afzal in search of a better life, a weeklong military curfew derails their departure. Then he meets Asifa, a young woman researching the lake’s ecosystem, and is forced to choose between a new life or a new love. This lyrical, tender film weaves together documentary and fiction, ancient myths and contemporary issues, to tell a story of finding one’s path home in a changing world.

‘This is appalling’, says actor Jeremy Irons, as he surveys a reeking mountain of waste that has transformed the once glorious beach beside the ancient Lebanese city of Sidon. In this new documentary from British filmmaker Candida Brady, Irons sets out to discover the extent and effects of the global waste problem, as he travels around the world to beautiful destinations tainted by pollution. Selected to receive a Special Screening at Cannes Film Festival, this is a meticulous, brave journey that takes Irons (and us) from scepticism to sorrow and from horror to hope.

MAY DAY It is over 100 years ago that May Day was established as an International Workers’ Day and working hours were revolutionised, following a long and often violent struggle. To celebrate the spirit of May Day, GFT brings you two rousing films: Ken Loach’s documentary The Spirit of ’45 and The Happy Lands, which is about the General Strike of 1926.

The Spirit of ‘45

The Happy Lands

Saturday 4 May (15.30)

Sunday 5 May (15.45)

Ken Loach's new documentary, The Spirit of '45, is about the founding of the welfare state in post-war Britain in 1945. Using film from Britain’s regional and national archives, alongside sound recordings and contemporary interviews, he creates a political and social narrative about the years following the Second World War and the changes that Britain endured. By using the voices and memories of the time, Loach hopes to illuminate and celebrate a period of unprecedented community spirit in the UK, the impact of which has endured for many years and which may yet be rediscovered today.

The General Strike of 1926 was a defining moment for a generation fighting to secure decent wages and conditions. The Happy Lands charts the impact on mining families in Fife as they defy the ‘austerity cuts’ of an intransigent management with their slogan ‘not a penny off the pay, not a minute on the day’. Their defiance is measured in hardship, hunger and suffering. Developed from true stories and featuring a largely non-professional cast, the film is a heartfelt reminder of Scotland's industrial past and the legacy of trade union solidarity. Archive footage and the testimony of family members enhances this ambitious drama/documentary.

The screening will be followed by a recording of the Q&A with Ken Loach (45 mins) that was originally broadcast on Sunday 17 March.

The screening will be introduced by director Robert Rae and a member of the cast, and followed by a Q&A session.

Crossing the Line

Crossing the Line

Sunday 5 May (20.15)

Sunday 2 June (20.00)

A hit at GFF13, we're bringing this bonkers film back for a second viewing. The contemporary retelling of the story of Kaspar Hauser, the mysterious 19th century Bavarian 'wild boy' who claimed to have grown up in total isolation, plays like a surreal western directed by the love child of Jodorowsky and Fellini. Kaspar, reimagined as an androgynous raver, washes up on a sparsely-populated Mediterranean island complete with Adidas tracksuit and headphones. Vincent Gallo, who plays the double role of superstar sheriff and drug pusher, sees Kaspar as both messiah and enemy and eventually brings about his/her downfall. Shot in luscious black and white and featuring a pulsing score by techno behemoth Vitalic, this trippy and compelling work is bound to become a cult classic.

An experiment in cinéma-vérite, Chronicle of a Summer is a groundbreaking documentary from sociologist Edgar Morin and filmmakeranthropologist Jean Rouch. Filmed over the course of the summer of 1960, Parisian residents were approached with the provocative question ‘Are you happy?’. Their answers reveal the hopes and dreams of a variety of people; from artists to factory workers, from an Italian émigré to an African student, and cover political issues such as the ongoing Algerian War and the Holocaust, as well as calling the very authenticity of nonfiction film into question.

Walking Too Fast Pouta Tuesday 30 April (20.00) In Czechoslovakia in 1982, the grip of the country’s totalitarian regime seems at its most unshakeable. Awkward, bitter Antonín, a member of the secret police, is seething with unvoiced anger and desperation. Finding an outlet for his obsessive tendencies in Klára, the young, flame-haired mistress of a writer he has long been observing, Antonín is determined to claim her as his prize. A thrilling Cold War crime noir reminiscent of The Lives of Others, Walking Too Fast is the tale of a rebellion that is not political, but purely personal and wholly savage. The Moo Man

Whose Story?

Monday 17 June (20.20)

Tuesday 18 June (18.00)

Concerns about what we eat have never been more widespread. Something vital has been sacrificed in the rush towards industrial-scale farming, which makes The Moo Man such a timely, beguiling documentary. Filmmakers Andy Heathcote and Heike Bachelier have followed Stephen Hook through the changing seasons and challenges of running a small organic farm. As Hook struggles with a long and difficult birth or attempts to sell his ‘raw’ milk, we realise that something precious will be lost if we allow the destruction of this fast-disappearing way of life. A charming and touching film that was one of the discoveries of this year's Sundance Film Festival.

If you had been forced to leave your home, how would you respond to the filmmaker who wants to capture your story? If you were that filmmaker, how would you begin that process? Filmmakers, community workers and participants come together to unpack the work and discuss the journey. The event features contributions from photographer and filmmaker Chris Leslie (creator of a recent film for Scottish Refugee Council and Refugee Survival Trust’s Stop Destitution campaign) and Media Co-op and Refugee Survival Trust’s 'Making It Home' project which developed films from poetry by writers including Jackie Kay, Ruth Padel and Edwin Morgan.

This screening will be introduced by directors Andy Heathcote and Heike Bachelier and followed by a Q&A.

The Invisible Lighthouse – a film and live performance by Thomas Dolby

The Stone Roses: Made of Stone

Sunday 19 May (20.20)

The film will be preceded by live red carpet footage and interviews and then followed by a 50-minute live satellite Q&A with Shane Meadows and special guests.

As a small child growing up on the Suffolk coast, Thomas Dolby fell asleep to the rhythmic flash of the rotating beam from a distant lighthouse. Later this year, that lighthouse – on the tip of the mysterious island of Orford Ness, formerly an MOD testing zone for experimental weapons – will be decommissioned and abandoned to the sea. Disturbed by the imminent deletion of this powerful childhood memory, Thomas planned a clandestine solo commando raid on the island in his RIB, and filmed unusual footage with a quadrocopter camera as he spent a few last hours alone with the lighthouse. At this unique solo performance, Thomas debuts scenes from the film along with live narration and a synth soundtrack spanning his musical career. It’s 1974 and the corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. James Graham’s biting, energetic and criticallyacclaimed new play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind-the-scenes who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments. Helen Mirren reprises her Academy Award winning role as Queen Elizabeth II in the highly-anticipated West End production of The Audience. For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace. A meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. The Audience breaks this contract of silence and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen.
