Strands Festival Calendar

WELCOME Welcome to the sixth Glasgow Film Festival. There is a famous story about Cary Grant that remains irresistible. In the era before Google and Wikipedia, a penny-pinching journalist wanted to know the great star’s age. Determined to use as few words as possible, he dispatched a telegram to Grant’s agent, brazenly demanding: “How old Cary Grant?” Grant just happened to see the telegram and sent a breezy reply stating: “Old Cary Grant fine. How you?”

The 2010 Glasgow Film Festival is our sixth edition and we too are just fine as we pay tribute to Cary Grant in this year’s retrospective. The Festival continues to attract ever increasing audience numbers, welcoming more than 28,000 people from near and far in 2009. This year human and financial resources have been stretched to the limit in preparing a Festival bursting at the seams with premieres, special screenings, unique events and amazing guests. The Glasgow Youth Film Festival has films to inspire and delight. Departures celebrates the rising talents in Japanese cinema and pays tribute to Akira Kurosawa. We celebrate the links between fashion and film, music and movies, Scotland and the wider world. The FrightFest team return to make your flesh crawl and the Short Film Festival provides unparalleled chances to gather and gaze, network and nourish. We are particularly indebted to our sponsors and all the incredibly hardworking individuals who make the Festival possible. From the opening night to the closing gala, we promise you a feast of films that delight the eye and touch the heart, tickle the funny bone and shiver the spine, open our eyes to the wider world and allow us to escape from our own little universe. Film is the greatest art form of our age and the Festival is here to ensure that all its riches are on show at a cinema near you. Welcome to the feast!

HOW TO ENJOY YOUR FESTIVAL Need help picking which films to watch and at which venue? Or maybe you’re looking for a dinner reservation on Opening Night? Whatever it is you’re looking for, this section is all you need to get the most out of GFF10.

VENUES

The diversity of the programme and our venues mirrors the uniqueness of Glasgow’s cultural scene. From the family friendly Cineworld, the beautiful Art Deco surroundings of Glasgow Film Theatre and iconic music venues throughout the city, the festival now stretches across 17 city venues, so there really is something for everyone. For full venue listings and maps see p36 - 37.

SELECTING A FILM

The film selection has been divided into 15 strands to make it easier for you to identify the films which most interest you. Within these strands are our ‘festivals within the festival:’ The Youth Film Festival (see p19), the Short Film Festival (see p17) and the Music and Film Festival, co-curated with our friends at the Arches (see p16). Each film listing is colour coded and signposted with its appropriate strand throughout this brochure. For full strand descriptions please see p6.

This includes dinner deals at Mama San and Bar Soba and preferential rates at Saint Judes and Malmaison hotels. Check out all these great offers and more at www.glasgowfilmfestival.org.uk/offers

OPENING GALA MICMACS (MICMACS A TIRE-LARIGOT)

Jean-Pierre Jeunet has been dazzling and delighting audiences for thirty years. Delicatessen, the beloved Amelie and A Very Long Engagement are all perfect examples of his ability to harness an amazing visual imagination to the most romantic, magical storytelling. His latest charmer is a beguiling salute to all the dreamers and rebels ready to take a stand against outrageous injustices and fight for lost causes. It is a film that lifts the spirits and brings a great big smile to your face. Dany Boon was anointed France’s hottest comedy star after the runaway success of Welcome To The Sticks (Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis). He stars as Bazil, a man who was orphaned as a youngster after his soldier father was killed by a roadside bomb. Now, Bazil has been hit by a stray bullet and begun to think the arms industry holds a personal grudge against him. Ex-con Placard (Jean-Pierre Marielle) offers him a helping hand and a fresh start among a group of kindred spirits living outside mainstream society. It is a chance to build his own sense of family, fight for what he believes is right and take an ingeniously executed, hilarious revenge against the arms manufacturers.

GFT Thursday 18 February (19.30 & 20.15) Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet Featuring Dany Boon André Dussollier Nicolas Marié Jean-Pierre Marielle France 2009, 1h45m, 12A 12A: Contains moderate violence and sex and references to hard drugs

Fizzing with invention, Micmacs employs a wonderful ensemble of French talent that includes Seraphine’s Yolande Moreau, André Dussollier and Jeunet regular Dominque Pinon. If you feel disillusioned by politicians, dubious about the possibility of change or sceptical about the power of the individual, Micmacs offers a shining beacon of hope in a world of cynicism. A perfect tonic for what ails you. Thanks To E1 Check www.glasgowfilmfestival.org.uk for updates about special guests and for details of the opening party.

CLOSING GALA LEGACY

Glasgow-based production company Black Camel Pictures has emerged as an ambitious new force in Scottish filmmaking. Their zesty chiller Outpost was the very definition of a guilty pleasure and a sequel is already on the way. Taut psychological thriller Legacy is an even more enterprising production that sees them joining forces with British/Nigerian director Thomas Ikimi who caught the eye with his debut feature Limbo (2004). The Wire star Idris Elba is the executive producer and lead actor in a tale that provides him with the kind of demanding role that actors dream about. Elba stars as Black Ops soldier Malcolm Gray. Having barely survived a botched mission in Eastern Europe, he takes sanctuary in a Brooklyn motel room. Brooding on the guilty legacy of his past actions, he replays events in his mind as he focuses on the seemingly inexorable rise of his smooth-talking brother Darnell (Eamonn Walker), a ruthlessly ambitious, fear-mongering senator with his sights firmly set on the White House. Paranoia, vengeance and the possibility of salvation prove a lethal cocktail in a film infused with potent echoes of cinema classics The Manchurian Candidate and Taxi Driver. The Glasgow Film Festival is proud to close the 2010 Festival with the world premiere of this exciting new production from a Glasgow company with international success in their sights.

19 - 21 February 2010 Scotland’s leading independent short film programmers The Magic Lantern returns for a third year with a core competition programme celebrating emerging international filmmakers whose innovative, experimental and rulebreaking work introduces them as the strong new voices of cinema. This year GSFF introduces a Best International Short Film Award, judged by a jury of international and local guests, with all 33 invited filmmakers competing for the cash prize. We are delighted to present for the first time in the UK a retrospective of the unstoppable American low-budget collective COURT 13, and two extraordinary screenings of films, made in 1988 and 1972, revisited and remade in 2009 by artist Cynthia Beatt and GFF favourite Murray Grigor. We bring you guest-curated programmes by the likes of Radio Magnetic and New Media Scotland, and we have teamed up with LUX, Central Station, RSAMD and Skillset Screen Academy to stage workshops for both filmmakers and visual artists; parties from LuckyMe, Radio Magnetic, Huntleys & Palmers and Optimo; and even a mobile cinema in a caravan. GSFF 2010 promises to thrill and challenge its audience by wedding an international perspective to the best of Glasgow’s dynamic film, art and music scenes. www.glasgowfilmfestival.org.uk/shorts

FASHIONARTFILM Glasgow Film Festival is committed to expanding and diversifying the audience for non-mainstream films. In FashionArtFilm we will be showcasing and nurturing new emerging talent, promoting collaboration between partners and platforms and promoting the city as a national and international centre for the creative industries. These films and special events have been co-programmed with a selection of friends and partners throughout the UK and includes artists film and video, fashion and new media.

Art at Tramway Tramway is delighted to present Duncan Campbell’s first major exhibition in Scotland, Make it new John (22 January - 14 March 2010) a new film co-commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella, Chisenhale, Tramway and The Model, Sligo. Based on the life of American car engineer John Delorean, and the story of the failed car plant he set up in Northern Ireland in the 1980s, this ambitious work witnesses Campbell’s increasing maturity and confidence as a filmmaker, with particular interest in the problematic relationship of truth and fiction in the documentary realm. See www.tramway.org for full details. Coinciding with the exhibition, Tramway presents the following film programme: Artist Talk/Book Launch (Duncan Campbell)

CAry grant Is there anyone who doesn’t love Cary Grant? Who doesn’t envy his suave manner, his impeccable sartorial style, his easy wit, his perfect timing and the effortless grace under pressure displayed evading a sinister crop duster on a lonely highway or a frisky leopard on a wild goose chase? Who doesn’t respond to his playful banter, the unerring chivalry in his every action and the romantic twinkle in the merry depth of his eyes? He remains the perfect movie star and was one of the finest actors from Hollywood’s Golden Age with a talent that flourished in screwball comedies and ripping adventure yarns, sophisticated thrillers and the most tender of romances. It seems incredible that Cary Grant never won an Oscar and yet he probably appeared in more true classics than any other male star of his generation. We were spoilt for choice in compiling this retrospective and have selected films that reflect the breadth of his career and the full range of his talent. Cary Grant retired at the top of his profession in 1966, refusing all offers to return and insisting that fans should remember him the way he was. Time has done nothing to dent his charisma or diminish the power of his greatest performances as you will discover in this unmissable big screen revivals. www.glasgowfilmfestival.org.uk/cary An Affair To Remember

Great scots Turn any corner of the film industry and there is a fair chance you will encounter a Scot. Scottish talent has left an incredible impression on world cinema. We may be a small country but we produce filmmakers of enormous stature from admirably adventurous Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton to renaissance man Peter Mullan who holds a unique position in cinema history as the winner of both the Cannes Best Actor Prize and the Venice Golden Lion for The Magdalene Sisters. Great Scots celebrates the very best of Scottish films and filmmakers. Highlights this year include a 30th anniversary salute to the beloved Gregory’s Girl, in-person appearances from Peter Mullan, Mark Millar and Oscar-winner Kevin Macdonald and a chance to discover the remarkable legacy of WIlliam McLaren, a neglected Scottish painter brought back into the limelight by a brand new documentary. www.glasgowfilmfestival.org.uk/scots Director's Cut Kevin Macdonald

DEPARTURES: NEW JAPANESE CINEMA The 2009 Oscars were a triumph for Japanese cinema with Departures (Okuribito) winning Best Foreign Film and The House Of Small Cubes (Tsumiki no le) chosen as Best Animated Short. Japan has a vibrant film culture that stretches from Ozu and Mizoguchi to Kitano and Koreeda yet surprisingly few Japanese films ever secure British distribution. The heartwarming Departures is just the tip of the iceberg and this year’s Glasgow Film Festival has curated a focus on new Japanese cinema importing a selection of titles that can only be seen in Glasgow. Our selections vary across genre, style and subject from the polished period thriller Zero Focus based on the classic murder mystery by Seicho Matsumoto and Island Of Dreams, an astonishing cinemascope debut feature from Tsuta Tetsuichiro, to the wild and wonderful Yatterman, the latest offering from cult director Takashi Miike. March 2010 marks the centenary of the birth of Akira Kurosawa, an anniversary we celebrate with a rare screening of his epic Ran. Kurosawa is the director who introduced many international audiences to Japanese cinema. It seems appropriate that we honour his remarkable legacy in the year that we celebrate a new wave of Japan’s finest filmmakers. Supported by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation and The Japan Foundation. www.glasgowfilmfestival.org.uk/japan Akira

FRIGHTFEST Out of control genetic experiments (Splice), redneck cannibals (2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams), horror viruses ([REC] 2), underground shocks (Stag Night), treacherous ski slopes (Frozen), brutal ocean slaughter (Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre), classic giallo (A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin) and neo giallo (Amer). Yes, it’s that time of year again as Film4 FrightFest returns to its second home in Scotland with more world, European and UK premieres than ever. Great Britain’s biggest and best horror fantasy film festival celebrated a 10th year anniversary in 2009 with their most epic London event yet. So of course we want Glasgow to join us in commemorating those festivities too. We’ve assembled a line-up of all the latest must-see titles, current hot fantasy festival favourites, plus one restored Italian masterpiece to ensure there’s something wicked for everyone. Joining the party are some really special guests. FrightFest patron saint Adam Green is flying straight from the set of Hatchet 2 to present Frozen. Cube director Vincenzo Natali will launch Splice. And Helen Cattet and Bruno Forzani will present Amer, their homage to Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci and Italian thrillers of the 70s. It’s going to be a fabulous weekend of fear, fun and friends you just won’t want to miss… www.glasgowfilmfestival.org.uk/frightfest 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams

A TO Z 1234 Giles Borg’s impressive debut feature casts a wry eye over the dramas and disappointments of anyone who has ever dreamed of forming their own band. Wannabe musician Stevie works in a call centre with his drummer pal Neil. Guitarist Billy and bass player Emily are the eager recruits they attract to their latest venture. We follow the band’s progress in segments bearing the name of a track title (‘Track Two. Anyone Can Play Guitar’ etc). The result is a slight but endearing British charmer with sharply observed performances from a fine young cast, a sprinkling of easygoing humour and a light touch.

2001 MANIACS: FIELD OF SCREAMS “If they kill you, they will come”! Authorities have shut down the ‘detour’ ensnaring unsuspecting Northerners, so those Pleasant Valley cannibals are heading west in search of new blood. Unfortunately for two beautiful heiresses, and the crew of their reality series ‘Road Rascals’, the human meat freaks are about to become more than just ratings killers. Bill (Devil’s Rejects) Moseley steps in as Mayor George W. Buckman in the anarchic sequel. Returning director Tim Sullivan promises the Glasgow world premiere is “Filled with sexiness, bloodiness and politically incorrectness. If the original didn’t secure me a warm spot in Hell, this one sure will!”

ABOUT ELLY (DARBAREYE ELLY) Winner of the Berlin Silver Bear and the Best Narrative Feature at Tribeca, About Elly is a compelling drama about the culture of deception that has come to define Persian life. Elly (Taraneh Alidoosti) is a nursery school teacher who is persuaded to accompany a group of old university friends on a trip to the Caspian. Elly doesn’t realise that Sepideh (Golshifteh Farahani) has the ulterior motive of playing matchmaker to her and the divorced Ahmad (Shahab Hosseini). Sepideh’s good intentions have tragic consequences as the gentle, lighthearted charm of the film’s early sequences darkens into a haunting, tension-filled mystery.

ACTING MASTERCLASS WITH JOE DEMPSIE Joe Dempsie (Skins, The Damned United, Doctor Who and Merlin) will host a unique acting workshop on performing for the screen. £

ADRIFT (A DERIVA) The familiar territory of marital strife and adolescent conflict is explored with sympathy and assurance in Adrift. Set in Brazil during the early 1980s, it offers a bittersweet remembrance of a defining summer in the life of a teenage girl. The story unfolds during a family vacation in Buzios. Filipa is fourteen and the eldest of three children. Her father, played by Vincent Cassel, is a successful French writer intent on finishing his latest novel. Filipa’s discovery of her father’s affair plunges her into the complexities that await in the adult world. A handsome, accessible drama from a director to watch. 26

AGAINST THE CURRENT A quirky charmer confronting the lingering pain of grief, Against The Current offers a winning blend of deadpan comedy and heartfelt drama. Joseph (Flash Forward) Fiennes’ Paul has spent five years coming to terms with the death of his pregnant wife. Now, he decides to fulfil a childhood dream of swimming the entire 150 miles of the Hudson River in one month. Sarcastic, wise-cracking best friend Jeff (a scene-stealing Justin Kirk) and Liz (Elizabeth Reaser) provide the moral support and technical back-up as he tackles his impossible quest. Little do they realise that he has another plan for when the task is completed.

AJAMI Scandar Copti is a Palestinian. Yaron Shani is an Israeli. Together they have collaborated on an extraordinary crime drama set on the mean streets of Ajami, one of the toughest neighbourhoods in Jaffa. Weaving together stories of violence and vendettas, illegal refugees and conscience-stricken cops, dreams of escape and hopes of sanctuary, they have created a film that offers a startling insight into the tensions, resentments and misunderstandings that are part of everyday life in Ajami. Winner of the London Film Festival’s Sutherland Trophy, a prize previously given to Persepolis, Red Road and Tarnation.

AKIRA No Japanese retrospective would be complete without Otomo’s animated masterpiece Akira. Regarded by many as a landmark production for Japan, its critical acclaim and box office success paved the way for the growth of anime culture across the world. ALL AROUND US (GURURI NO KOTO) Ryosuke Hashiguchi’s lyrical epic offers an intimate portrait of a marriage set within the bigger picture of sweeping social change in Japan. Kanao works in a shoe repair shop and has recently married his college sweetheart Shoko. The leisurely flow of their life together changes when Kanao is offered a job as a courtroom sketch artist. His new occupation gives him a front row seat at some of the country’s most notorious cases and allows the film to depict the dark heart of Japanese society. A country’s troubled soul is reflected in the trials and tribulations of Kanao’s own marriage in this richly detailed drama.

AMER (BITTER) Gialli fans will not want to miss co-directors Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s immaculately executed and flawless valentine to the 70s thriller genre popularized by Dario Argento and Mario Bava. Recreating the motifs, clichés and visual codes from the vintage Italian back catalogue (including A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin, Suspiria and Deep Red), the Belgian duo unfold a virtually dialogue-free tale of frightening obsession, sexual sensation and stunning black-gloved murder. Scored to recycled Italian soundtrack selections in the Tarantino tradition, the hypnotic and ethereal allure of the classic gialli lives again in this boldly imaginative cult phenomenon.

AMERICAN: THE BILL HICKS STORY The ferociously funny, eternally fearless Bill Hicks died in 1994 from pancreatic cancer. He was just 32 and one of the most revered stand-up comics of his time. This unconventional biography captures the full flavour of the man and his art by using an innovative animation technique, previously unseen footage and the affectionate personal testimonies of the friends and family members who knew him best. The result is a perceptive, unvarnished account of the man and his determination to speak the truth about everything from America’s misguided foreign adventures to his alter ego Goatboy.

AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER The path to true love is strewn with impossible obstacles in this peerless romantic weepie. Suave playboy Cary Grant meets Deborah Kerr on a luxury ocean liner. They banter, flirt and fall deeply in love during an unforgettable voyage. The only trouble is that she is engaged to be married and he is a notorious womaniser. They make a vow that if their love is meant to be they will meet again in six months time at the top of the Empire State Building. However, fate has other plans in store for the couple. Grant has a wonderful rapport with Scottish-born Kerr in a tale that is effortlessly witty, sophisticated and incredibly moving. Remember to bring a handkerchief.

AN AUDIENCE WITH SKINS Critically acclaimed drama Skins returns to E4 for more hedonistic teenage behaviour. To celebrate its success, writer Ben Schiffer and actor Joe Dempsie (Chris) visit GFT to discuss developing the show for young audiences. Get your questions at the ready!

THE APE (APAN) Jesper Ganslandt is at the cutting edge of a new generation of Swedish filmmakers. His daring second feature The Ape features an amazing central performance from Olle Sarri who never knew what was going to happen next until he arrived at the various locations. Sarri’s Krister awakes on a bathroom floor. He is dirty, dishevelled and disorientated. He hurries to work, rearranging his schedule of clients waiting for their next driving lesson. It is the beginning of a long day’s journey into the dark heart of his existence in a raw, unsettling drama.

APPLAUSE (APPLAUS) Paprika Steen gives a fearless, award-winning performance in this acclaimed portrait of a woman coping with alcohol addiction, divorce, the loss of custody of her two sons and the unbearable burden of simply getting through another day clean and sober. Thea (Steen) is an acclaimed actress, winning rave reviews for her stage performance as Martha in Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? Yet her personal life is as volatile as the play, as she emerges from a lengthy spell in rehab desperate to prove her love to her sons and regain a measure of self-respect. The influence of John Cassavetes is strongly felt in this brilliant tour de force.

AROUND A SMALL MOUNTAIN (36 VUES DU PIC SAINT LOUP) The latest film from nouvelle vague veteran Jacques Rivette is a typically elegant tale of the eternal clash between life and art recounted with a witty lightness of touch. Jane Birkin stars as Kate, a woman returning to the circus she abandoned fifteen years earlier. Stranded next to her car on a country road she finds her knight in shining armour with the appearance of Vittorio (Sergio Castellitto). His magic touch soon brings the car back to life and might just be enough to restore Kate to a state of happiness as we discover how she has become trapped by the tragedies and regrets of her past.

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE Riotously funny adaptation of the long-running Broadway farce with Cary Grant giving a masterclass in frantic comic exasperation. It should be the happiest day of Grant’s life as he enters into a state of holy matrimony with the lovely Priscilla Lane. Then all hell breaks loose as he discovers the unholy activities of his kindly spinster aunts and their lethal elderberry wine. Add to the mix an eccentric uncle who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and fugitive criminals Peter Lorre and Raymond Massey who have no idea of the madhouse they have entered. A true classic of black comedy that has stood the test of time.

AUTUMN (SONBAHAR) An auspicious debut from Turkish director Ozcan Alper, Autumn is set in the wild mountainous region in the north of the country and makes stunning use of the natural rugged landscapes. Political activist Yusuf is released from prison after ten years and returns to his home village. In failing health, he discovers that the youthful idealism he shared with university colleagues has long gone. When Eka crosses the border to the nearby Batum, the two lost souls embark on a relationship. A tale of personal tragedy develops into a bittersweet reflection on a wider sense of disillusionment with the socialist dream.

BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS Banish any thoughts of Abel Ferrara and a naked Harvey Keitel as director Werner Herzog puts his own outlandish stamp on the tale of a cop in moral meltdown. Filmed amidst the broken heart of New Orleans, Herzog’s film features a demented tour de force from Nicolas Cage as a drug-addled homicide detective. Gripped in the fever of an addiction, visited by hellish hallucinations and the owner of a lucky crack pipe, Cage is still determined to serve the greater cause of justice when he is assigned to investigate the massacre of a family of Senegalese immigrants. A riveting journey into the heart of human darkness.

BARE ESSENCE OF LIFE (Urutora mirakuru rabu sutôrî) Hailed as one of the emerging superstars of Japanese cinema, writer/director Satoko Yokohama’s second feature is an assured, heartfelt romantic drama. Kenichi Matsuyama stars as a mentally challenged young farmer who happily tends his grandmother’s organic vegetable garden. A beautiful nursery schoolteacher arrives from Tokyo to make a fresh start and come to terms with the tragic death of her boyfriend. Set against a vivid depiction of rural life, this is a sensitively handled, offbeat tale combining human drama with acute observations about our relationship with the land.

BEETLE QUEEN CONQUERS TOKYO It may sound like a cult B-movie from the glory days of Godzilla but Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo is actually a lyrical, spellbinding documentary on Japan’s fascination with insects. All children have a ghoulish attraction to creepy crawlies but in Japan it seems like a national pasttime. Director Jessica Oreck is an entomologist at the Museum Of Natural History in New York and her first feature has all the curiosity and wonder of a true enthusiast. She encourages experts and authors to trace the cultural history of Japan’s love affair with insects and captures enthralling footage of the children, collectors and sellers who have taken the bugs to their hearts.

BERGFEST (WITHOUT YOU I’M NOTHING) Made for just €50,000 in ten days, Bergfest is an exemplary piece of low-budget, independent filmmaking from writer/ director Florian Eichinger. The eerie silence and snow-covered vastness of the Bavarian Alps provides an atmospheric setting for an intense family drama with echoes of Thomas Vinterberg’s Festen. 25 year-old Hannes is on a mountaineering trip with his girlfriend when they stop at a little family hut that is supposed to be deserted. Instead, he discovers his father and his girlfriend. Conditions make it impossible to leave yet bad feelings make it undesirable to stay as father and son have not met in eight years.

BEYOND THE POLE As urgent as An Inconvenient Truth but with a few more belly laughs, Beyond The Pole is a comical mockumentary with an eco-agenda. Determined to make their contribution to the fight against global warming, amateur explorers Stephen Mangan and Rhys Thomas decide to embark on the first carbon neutral, vegetarian and organic expedition to the North Pole. The fact that they have no experience or common sense is not going to stop them. Confronted by polar bears, cocky Norwegian rivals and the eerie, unsettling vistas of endless snow they discover the high price of activism. 30

BIG FAN

State Of Independents

Robert D. Siegel wrote the tangy script for Mickey Rourke’s heartrending comeback in The Wrestler. He brings a similar sympathy for the lone, misfit outsider to his impressive directorial debut. Patton Oswald stars as Paul, a thirtysomething garage attendant living at home with his mother. His life revolves around an obsessive devotion to the New York Giants and his frequent calls to the local sports radio show. He is their number one fan, so it seems entirely appropriate that he follow his favourite Giants player into New York for a night on the town that has all kinds of unpleasant consequences. A quirky, expertly realised character drama.

THE BLUE BIRD (AOI TORI) This is a tense, award-winning drama about the aftermath of a spate of classroom bullying. Starring Japanese heart throb Kanata Hongo.

Cineworld Renfrew Street Friday 19 February (19.00) Saturday 20 February (14.15) Director Robert D. Siegel Featuring Patton Oswalt / Kevin Corrigan USA 2009, 1h26m, N/C 15+ Thanks To Sierra Pictures

BLUEBEARD (BARBE BLEUE) Catherine Breillat creates her own darkly distinctive version of the Charles Perrault fairytale in this compelling account of sisterly love and a shocking serial killer. In 1950s France, a young girl torments her older sister by reading the story of the notorious Bluebeard. We are then transported back in time where two teenage sisters are left penniless orphans by the death of their father. Marriage to the local squire is an attractive option although the sudden disappearance of his previous wives is a worry and there is a sinister room that nobody must enter. Thus an elegant slice of grand guignol unfolds.

BOMBER Paul Cotter’s wonderfully droll little gem of a road movie marks his first feature after a number of eye-catching shorts. It is notable for its polished visuals, dry wit and expert central performances. Alastair is in his eighties and has decided to personally apologise to the residents of a small German village that he accidentally bombed during World War 2. A road trip is planned with his wife Valerie but when Alastair proves a less than reliable driver their son Ross is bullied into the role. Minor frictions and longstanding grievances come bubbling to the surface during their bittersweet and ultimately poignant journey. BUY TICKETS ONLINE AT WWW.GLASGOWFILMFESTIVAL.ORG.UK

A BOY CALLED DAD

GFT Friday 12 February (14.00)

After the screening members of the cast and crew will be answering questions from the audience.

Thanks to Cinemagic

THE BOYS: THE SHERMAN BROTHER’S STORY The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story is an intimate journey through the lives of Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman, the astoundingly prolific, Academy Award®-winning songwriting team that defined family musical entertainment for five decades. Their career highlights range from Mary Poppins to The Jungle Book and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. This featurelength documentary, conceived, produced and directed by two of the songwriters’ sons, takes audiences behind the scenes of the Hollywood magic factory and offers a rare glimpse of a unique creative process at work. It also explores a deep and longstanding rift that has kept the brothers personally estranged throughout much of their unparalleled professional partnership.

BRINGING UP BABY Glorious, helter skelter romantic comedy reuniting Cary Grant with the incomparable Katharine Hepburn. The bespectacled Grant is a strait-laced paleontologist who likes a life of calm, conventional order. His plans include a simple wedding and the completion of his prize dinosaur. Hepburn is the scatterbrained eccentric who turns his world upside down as they go chasing after a missing bone and a million dollar donor accompanied by a lively leopard called Baby. The result is a breathless, madcap riot with priceless performances from the entire cast. Simply one of the finest screwball comedies ever made.

BURNING: MOGWAI & LIVE DJ SET Glasgow-based musicians Mogwai present a black and white concert film, capturing their unique layered rock sound. Burning is directed by two people responsible for some of the best music video in the industry. Shot over three nights in Brooklyn, the imagery of the film is artistic and beautiful. Band members are almost motionless as soft melody inevitably gives in to the cacophony of distortion and raw emotion the band are famed for. A compilation of music videos representing the best of Glasgow label Rock Action Records’ recent releases will be screened prior to the film (including videos from Errors, Remember Remember, DeSalvo, Part Chimp and Kling Klang). The screening will be followed by a special live DJ set with band members at a secret venue (to be confirmed) for ticket holders only.

CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY Michael Moore is a fearless champion of informed debate. He has brought a disarming wit and a provocative fresh perspective to key issues like gun control and health care. His latest documentary questions America’s love affair with capitalism in an era of growing unemployment, failing companies, reckless financial institutions and economic meltdown. He puts a human face to the debate by visiting families whose lives have been destroyed by the economic downturn and questions the real motives behind the big bank bailout of 2008. Essential, accessible viewing for anyone who cares about the way we live now. 32

CHOPIN: DESIRE FOR LOVE (CHOPIN. PRAGNIENIE MILOSCI) Widely recognised as one of the most historically accurate films on the life of Frederic Chopin, Chopin: Desire For Love offers a remarkable combination of gorgeous images and an impeccable soundtrack of great performances from the finest classical artists including Polish virtuoso Janusz Olejniczak, Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax and Yukio Yokoyama. The heart of the film is the relationship between Chopin (Piotr Adamczyk) and the feminist author Aurore Dupin (Danuta Stenka) better known as George Sand. To mark Chopin’s birthday the film will be preceded by a 20 minute piano recital by Aleksander Kudajczyk - the unsurpassable Chopin virtuoso, who has made Glasgow his home and who has just returned from a tour of Australia and Indonesia. Part of Chopin 2010 celebrations.

CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH (NANJING NANJING) A majestic production filmed in stunning black and white, City Of Life And Death sheds a powerful light on the Rape Of Nanking, often described as the forgotten Holocaust of World War Two. Set during the Japanese invasion of China in 1937, it offers an eyewitness account of the brutality of war and the human instinct for survival. True events are dramatised through the stories of key individuals from a kind-hearted Japanese officer to the courageous leader of Chinese guerrilla fighters, a Japanese “comfort woman” and the Schindler-like figure who saved many civilians. Epic filmmaking with an arresting human heart.

COMEDIE & HERE IS ALWAYS SOMEWHERE ELSE, THE DISAPPEARANCE OF BAS JAN ADER Duncan Campbell has selected the little seen Beckett film Comédie, which, with its absence of action, cinematography and dramaturgy, stands as a masterpiece of modernity. Tracking Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader’s emergence in the radical art scene of the 1960s and his shocking disappearance at sea, the film is a sweeping overview of contemporary art film, featuring artist interviews such as Chris Burden, Tacita Dean, Rodney Graham, and Pipilotti Rist. £

COMPETITION 1: STANDSTILL A collection of characters trapped – by external forces, by their fear of the future or by lust and deception. Physical and mental constraints spark creativity, invention and drama in our first international competition selection. Full details of all the films will be provided in the Glasgow Short Film Festival brochure.

COMPETITION 2: WORLDS COLLIDE The clash of cultures is the focus of our second international competition programme. Racial, religious and class differences are challenged in both form and content, in a series of films that conflate the personal and the political. Full details of all the films will be provided in the Glasgow Short Film Festival brochure.

COMPETITION 3: NO YESTERDAYS Our third international programme explores the erasure of the past and the reinvented present. Characters seek to transform or escape from landscapes of their own making. Others attempt to recall long-forgotten histories. Full details of all the films will be provided in the Glasgow Short Film Festival brochure.

COMPETITION 4: LEARNING TO BREATHE Loss, rejection and trauma have brought the protagonists of our fourth international selection to the brink. Only rebirth and baby steps can bring them back to safety. By turns funny, melancholic and shocking, this is an emotional one. Full details of all the films will be provided in the Glasgow Short Film Festival brochure.

COMPETITION 5: LEAVE A TRAIL Travel broadens the mind they say. Well perhaps for some. Others just get lost, tricked or abandoned along the way. Take a walk into the unknown in our final international selection. Full details of all the films will be provided in the Glasgow Short Film Festival brochure.

COMRADE COUTURE with SWG3 & NOIR! Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, fashionable East Berliners created a fantasy world that was not available on state stocked wardrobes and clothing retailers. This fascinating documentary examines the perils of an industry taken for granted in the west, and has the insight of both director Wilms – labelled an ‘enemy of the state’ as a teenager - and stylist Frank Schafer. This personal account is at times very touching, and also very thrilling – a constant fear of arrest hangs over the scene. The screening is followed by a grand fashion show staged by Noir! and a warehouse party reflecting the theme of the film.

CON ARTIST “Modern art is a con,” Mark Kostabi once said, “and I am the world’s greatest con artist.” Michael Sladek’s documentary certainly provides the proof of the pudding as it offers a witty profile of the disgraced enfant terrible of the New York art scene. Kostabi had a hunger for fame and attention in the 1980s that makes Jordan looking like a shy, retiring violet. He made no secret of the fact that he employed people to supply bright ideas, passed those on to skilled painters and then made his sole contribution of adding a signature to the finished canvas. Shameless charlatan or sly satirist? This is your chance to decide. 34

A CONGREGATION OF GHOSTS Edward Woodward’s film career included outstanding performances in The Wicker Man and Breaker Morant. Inspired by true events, plaintive British feature A Congregation Of Ghosts gave him a final great role as the Reverend Densham. In 1932, Densham returned from missionary work in India to begin his pastoral duties in the remote Cornish village of Warleggan on Bodmin Moor. His fierce piety soon alienated the local congregation and he became an isolated, increasingly eccentric figure. In 1967, new owners arrive at the Rectory to discover that Densham continues to haunt the area.

CORSO - THE LAST BEAT

Stranger Than Fiction

Filmmaker Gustave Reininger befriended the poet Gregory Corso during the last years of his life. When Corso’s good friend and contemporary Allen Ginsberg died in 1997, Corso became the last of the Beat generation poets. Reininger’s award-winning documentary follows him to Europe as he revisits some of his favourite haunts of the 1950s and we learn the story of his life. Corso was born in 1930 and always believed that his mother had abandoned him. The true story of her actions is incredibly moving and is a key part of an enthralling documentary on the man that Ginsberg called “ the poet’s poet”.

COWARDS (COBARDES) Bullied at school, Gaby takes matters into his own hands after constant harassment but his actions have unexpected consequences for his family and friends in this award-winning film. An unsettling but accessible look at the use of modern technology in the service of bullying.

THE CRAZIES Imagine living in a small, sleepy Iowa town where everything is safe and happy…until suddenly it isn’t! Imagine your family, friends and neighbours going quickly and horrifically insane. The reason? A mysterious toxin has contaminated the water supply. In a terrifying tale of the ‘American Dream’ gone horribly wrong, Tim (Hitman) Olyphant and Radha (Silent Hill) Mitchell find themselves trapped in their once idyllic hometown fighting for survival in the highly anticipated reinvention of George Romero’s 1973 cannibalistic classic. Directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay by Ray Wright (Case 39) and Scott Kosar (The Amityville Horror). BUY TICKETS ONLINE AT WWW.GLASGOWFILMFESTIVAL.ORG.UK

CUCKOO Two sisters have lost their mother at an early age, and now one may be losing her mind in this tense, atmospheric thriller. Polly (played by Glasgow actress Laura Fraser) is facing the twin traumas of a cheating partner, and a supervisor taking more than a passing interest in her personal life - expertly played by Grant. This dark film builds towards a very black and unsettling ending.

DIRECTOR’S CUT WITH KEVIN MACDONALD In conversation with BBC Movie Café Presenter Janice Forsyth and presented in partnership with The University of Aberdeen’s Director’s Cut series. Kevin Macdonald is a Scottish two-time BAFTA winning director, most famous for his films Touching the Void (2003), The Last King of Scotland (2006) and State of Play (2009). Glaswegian Macdonald is the grandson of the Hungarian-born filmmaker, Emeric Pressburger, and his brother is film producer Andrew Macdonald. The Director’s Cut is a series of discussions with well-known and innovative international filmmakers and broadcasters, staged by the University of Aberdeen (www.abdn.ac.uk/directorscut/). We are delighted to welcome Kevin and the University of Aberdeen to Glasgow for this special event to explore his career and current projects, including The Eagle of the Ninth (2010), starring Jamie Bell and Donald Sutherland, filmed on locations across Scotland.

DO IT AGAIN Geoff Edgers is a newspaper reporter fearing the onset of his 40th birthday when he decides to find the surviving members of the Kinks – and convince them to reunite. The words ‘Tall’ and ‘Order’ come to mind, but also the words ‘Sunny’ and ‘Afternoon’ – just one of the many beautiful tracks from an impressive back catalogue. Despite the difficulty of the task, Geoff secures meetings with other Kinks fans including Sting, REM guitarist Peter Buck and Zooey Deschanel. The film is made by the capable hands of Robert Patton-Spruill, who also made the Public Enemy documentary, Welcome to the Terrordrome.

DOGTOOTH (KYNODONTAS) Winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard at Cannes, Dogtooth offers a merciless, deadpan satire of middle-class respectability. Kept under the thumb of ruthlessly controlling parents, three teenagers are confined to an isolated country estate lest they be contaminated by contact with the wider world. There is an imaginary brother whose sorry fate is meant to be a lesson to them all. The only outsider to enter their estate is a woman hired to satisfy the son’s natural urges. Her presence fans the flame of resistance as sex becomes the utimate act of rebellion.

DOPE + THE DELIAN MODE MONORAIL FILM CLUB Shot in a lilting, evocative style by filmmakers Sheldon and Diane Rochlin (now Flame Schon), Dope was praised as a film “ahead of its time” by Ricky Leacock. It works as a magnifying glass into the swinging London drug scene of the ‘60s with a great soundtrack mixed by Mark Dichter and includes rare footage of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd. Beautiful as well as chilling, Dope melds shots of that inbetween realm - the fragile edges of reality and dream, order and chaos, inertia and motion-reflecting transience, mortality and impermanence. Dope will be preceded by Kara Blake’s The Delian Mode (25minutes) a fascinating documentary on Delia Derbyshire, the pioneering composer and BBC Radiophonic Workshop innovator who realised the original “Doctor Who” theme and whose influence today is stronger than ever.

DOUBLE TAKE In life Alfred Hitchcock couldn’t resist sly cameo appearances in his best thrillers. In death he moves centre stage in this wildly inventive, blurring of fact and fiction from Belgian filmmaker and media artist Johan Grimonprez. Inspired by a Jorge Luis Borges story, this is a suspenseful plunge into the paranoia of the Cold War era weaving together the witty tale of Hitchcock encountering his double during the filming of The Birds, rising tensions between America and the Soviets and a stirring attack on the power of the media. Ron Burrage makes a fantastic Hitchcock in this constant delight.

DOWN TERRACE Imagine if Mike Leigh had made The Sopranos and shot it in eight days at his parents house with a cast that mixed cutting-edge comedy stars with members of his own family and you begin to have the measure of Down Terrace. Ben Wheatley’s award-winning debut feature focuses on a father and son who are both just out of prison and desperate to discover who sold them out. The paranoia grows and the body count rises in a darkly unsettling kitchen sink comedy laced with the blackest of humour. “It’s just a film about work really,” claims Wheatley, “work which happens to be criminal.”

ECCENTRICITIES OF A BLONDE-HAIRED GIRL (SINGULARIDADES DE UMA RAPARIGA LOURA) The remarkable Manoel de Oliveira is 101 years old and has been making films for over seventy years. His latest is based on a short story by Eca de Queiros and is a typically slim, elegant reflection on that old devil called love. De Oliveira’s grandson Ricardo Trepa stars as Macario, a Lisbon accountant who becomes infatuated with the beautiful blonde girl he spies in the widow across the street. Infatuation leads to obsession but Macario is an old-fashioned romantic, bound by social codes that seem more appropriate to a Jane Austen novel than a 21st century suitor and he discovers that the path of true love is strewn with obstacles. EVERYBODY’S FINE Robert De Niro gives his best performance in years in this warmhearted Kirk (Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee) Jones remake of Giuseppe Tornatore’s Stanno Tutti Bene. Following in the footstseps of Marcello Mastroianni, De Niro plays a retired widower who embarks on an impromptu road trip to reconnect with each of his grown children only to discover that their lives are far from picture perfect. An extraordinary ensemble cast includes Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell, but it is the heartfelt sincerity of De Niro’s weary, understated performance that dominates.

EXPANSIVE GROUNDS This documentary takes an appropriately sombre look from a German filmmaker’s perspective on the collective guilt at the horror of the holocaust. Berlin’s memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe has seen thousands of visitors since its opening in 2004, and Gerburg speaks with many of them on their experiences after contemplating the memorial.

EYES WIDE OPEN (Einaym Pkuhot) Haim Tabakman’s intense, mature first feature explores the notion that religion can never quite legislate for the workings of the human heart. Aaron is a respectable kosher butcher in an ultraorthodox area of Jerusalem. He is married with four sons. One rainy day he offers sanctuary to Ezri, a strikingly handsome twenty-two year old student. He takes a shine to the younger man, offering him the hand of friendship and taking him under his wing. Great Scots

An excellent opportunity to see the best of the winning films from the first two years of FilmG, a Gaelic short film competition that attracted 54 entries in 2009. Run by MG Alba, a range of genres from not only Scotland, but also North America and the Isle of Man. Some of the filmmakers will be present to talk about their experience making everything from action movies to animation.

THE FIRST MOVIE Northern Irish cineaste Mark Cousins is a passionate advocate of the power of film to transform our understanding of the world. In The First Movie he visits a small village in the Kurdish North of Iraq armed with a projector, a selection of great movies and three small cameras to allow the children there to express their inner imaginations. The result is a film about war and its human casualties but also an uplifting account of how innocence survives and beauty endures. The Guardian describes it as; “A terrifically enjoyable and engaging film: open-minded and open-hearted, and utterly unlike the material on regular commercial release.”

THE FRENCH KISSERS (LES BEAUX GOSSES) Imagine American Pie but told with wit, charm and real insight into adolescent behaviour and you have the measure of French Kissers, a striking debut from comic book writer Riad Sattouf. Herve is a spotty, geeky teenager living in provincial Brittany with his needy mother. His grades are average, his aptitude for sport is minimal and his hormones are raging. He couldn’t be less cool. One day he is approached by the prettiest girl in his class and the two begin an awkward relationship that is captured with painful accuracy and lingering affection. Could this be France’s answer to Gregory’s Girl?

FRIENDS (WITH BENEFITS) Let’s talk about sex, maybe? A group of six close buddies (three men and three women) live by some simple rules including the belief that friends do not sleep together. Chloe and Owen have known each other since childhood and want to move things to a different level. They embark on a relationship that is strictly physical with no complicating emotional ties. Their decision sends shock waves through the group leading the other four friends to question what they really want. Sharply written by director Gorman Bechard, this is a polished, provocative take on modern relationships with a smart cast and a great soundtrack.

FROM TIME TO TIME Oscar-winning renaissance man Julian Fellowes has written and directed a charming film for all the family in From Time To Time. Based on the beloved Green Knowe novels by Lucy M Boston, it begins in 1944 when Manchester teenager Tolly is sent to live with his estranged grandmother as his own mother awaits news of a father who is missing in action. The lad soon discovers more of the family’s troubled present and tragic past when half of the manor house was destroyed. The past becomes strikingly real when Tolly is visited by ghostly figures from the Napoleonic era.

FROZEN We’ve UK-launched Hatchet, Spiral and Grace for our good friend director/producer Adam Green. He’s returned the favour with those wonderful ‘Road to FrightFest’ shorts we highlight every August. Last year he filmed an intro for Grace’s Glasgow debut from the Frozen set. So we are delighted to host the European premiere of Green’s latest chiller so soon after its Sundance debut. A typical day on the ski slopes turns into a nightmare for three snowboarders stranded on the chairlift before their last run. Dangling high off the ground with no way down, how will they survive frostbite, hypothermia and other unexpected dangers?

GENTLEMEN BRONCOS Benjamin is an aspiring writer whose ideas are stolen by a fantasy novelist, hysterically played by Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement, and then made into a disastrous low-budget film. Gentlemen Broncos is an immensely funny and quotable film from the creators of Napoleon Dynamite. A real cult in the making.

GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell make wonderful sparring partners in this glorious Technicolor adaptation of the Anita Loos Broadway musical that has been lovingly restored to the big screen by Glasgow distributor Park Circus. Monroe is adorable gold-digger Lorelei Lee and Russell is her more cynical pal Dorothy. The duo are lounge singers on a liner headed for Paris seeking fun, adventure and a wealthy sugar daddy. The men don’t stand a chance in a sassy, brassy delight where the production numbers include Two Little Girls From Little Rock and Monroe’s legendary rendition of Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend. 42

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN The latest film from Andre Techine creates a sophisticated, thought-provoking drama from a true incident in which a young woman fabricated an account of being the subject of a racist attack on a train. The story grabbed the front pages in France and seemed to reflect so much about the different cultures and classes within that country. Here Emilie Duquenne is the naive girl who lives in the leafy suburbs with her widowed mother Catherine Deneuve. A stormy relationship with aspiring wrestler Nicolas Duvauchelle drags her into a very different world and a life she can only rationalise by creating a story in which she is the innocent victim.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (MAN SOM HATAR KVINNOR) Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy has been one of the publishing sensations of the past decade. The keenlyawaited screen version of the bestselling first novel is a violent, brooding whodunnit that exposes the ugly truth about the corruption and misogyny at the heart of Swedish society. An aging industrialist invites journalist Mikael Blomkvist to investigate the long ago murder of his niece. Blomkvist calls upon the services of 24 year-old wild child Lisbeth Salander, one of the most brilliant hackers and damaged individuals in recent crime fiction. A satisfying, knife edge thriller.

Glasgow on Screen (it could be you!) Over the years, Glasgow has hosted numerous productions from award-winning British films like Andrea Arnold’s critically acclaimed Red Road, large scale international productions such as Neil Marshall’s Doomsday and the yet to be released The Last Word, starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green as well as high profile adverts for global companies like Sony and Vodafone. The spectacular variety of locations and Glasgow’s many architectural styles has enabled the city to double for London, New York, Moscow and even the Vatican City.

THE GREATEST Filled with echoes of Nanni Moretti’s The Son’s Room, The Greatest is a beguiling tale of a family’s all-consuming grief handled with restraint and maturity by writer/director Shana Feste. Carey Mulligan’s Rose has barely had time to savour her relationship with dream soulmate Bennett (Aaron Johnson) when he is killed in a car crash. His death has a devastating effect on his mother (Susan Sarandon), emotionally reserved father (Pierce Brosnan) and younger brother Ryan (Johnny Simmons). Rose becomes an object of both curiosity and resentment in a beautifully photographed tale of love and loss.

GREGORY’S GIRL: 30th ANNIVERSARY SCHOOL REUNION BAFTA-winning Gregory’s Girl is probably the most beloved Scottish film ever made. Writer-director Bill Forsyth beautifully portrays the awkwardness and cock-eyed optimism of adolescence in a film that captures school life like no other. John Gordon Sinclair is the gangly teenager besotted with the new star player in the school football team (the gorgeous Dorothy) but fate has other plans in store for his romantic longings. We hope to welcome cast and crew members to this special 30th anniversary screening that is dedicated to the late Clive Parsons, one of the film’s producers.

GIULIA DOESN’T DATE AT NIGHT (GIULIA NON ESCE LA SERA) An award-winning Valeria Golino gives one of the best performances of her career in this soulful romance from writer/director Giuseppe Piccioni. Beautifully observed and impeccably played, the film draws you into the bond that grows between two people after a chance meeting. Guido is a married novelist who has just been nominated for a coveted literary prize. Seeking a distraction, he decides to take lessons from his daughter’s swimming instructor. HANDSOME HARRY Cult director Bette (Variety) Gordon returns to filmmaking with this powerful journey into the dark heart of male friendship. Jamey Sheridan brings a compelling intensity to his role as Harry, a former Navy man called to the bedside of a dying friend (Steve Buscemi) preoccupied by the transgressions of the past. Harry has a hazy memory of what really happened one long ago night and sets out on an obsessive quest to reconnect with his guilty comrades and make amends to the man they wronged. Fused with an atmospheric jazz score, this plaintive ensemble drama also features John Savage, Aidan Quinn and Karen Young.

HEARTLESS Writer/director Philip Ridley makes a long overdue return to filmmaking with this gloriously ambitious mixture of psychological thriller, modern morality tale and graphic urban chiller. Jim Sturgess stars as a young amateur photographer whose life has been defined by the heart-shaped birthmark on his face. Having endured the taunts and prejudices of others on the vicious streets of London’s East End, he is offered a Faustian pact that grants him a beautiful girlfriend and a happy family. It seems too good to be true and that’s because it is. A mindblowing tale of eerie beauty and heartbreaking emotion that will haunt your dreams.

HIDDEN DIARY (MERES ET FILLES) There is an echo of Julie & Julia is this subtle, assured French drama where events from the past help to unlock the bitter emotions and resentments of the present. A pregnant Audrey returns home to France and a less than warm welcome from her mother Martine. When Audrey discovers the diary of her grandmother Louise it provides a valuable insight into her unbearable existence as a 1950s housewife, why she abandoned her husband and children and the haunting effect on Martine. Beautifully acted by a powerhouse of French performers this is a sensitive and touching tale of a family at war with itself.

HILDE Hildegard Knef (1925–2002) was many things – Broadway star, songstress, screen diva, international icon and bestselling author. In this compelling biography Heike Makatsch gives a knockout performance as Knef, who walked out of the rubble of post-war Berlin and embarked on a career so amazing it could only be true. Infamous for appearing in the first nude scene in German cinema (in Die Sünderin, 1951) and called ‘the best singer without a voice’ by Ella Fitzgerald, Knef’s adventures in Hollywood, on Broadway and back home in her beloved Germany is the stuff of showbiz legend. A classy support cast includes Monica Bleibtreu and Michael Gwisdek.

HIPSTERS (STILYAGI) ‘Stilyagi’ was a term conceived by Soviet citizens to negatively label their ‘comrades’ who had an interest and passion in western culture immediately following the end of WWII. The war opened up the previously isolated country to an idea of what living on the other side of the iron curtain was like. However, the insight gained from Jazz LPs, movies of the era, and clothing was not the most accurate and realistic. An accomplished director and cast managed to turn the subject into a funny and ultimately romantic film that may be one if the best Russian films of the last ten years. HIS & HERS Fresh from its international premiere at Sundance, the awardwinning His & Hers is a film that you will clutch to your heart like a long lost relative. Ken Wardrop’s documentary takes a simple notion and transforms it into an acutely observed and profoundly moving salute to the joys and hopes, longings and sorrows that we all experience. Filmed in the small Irish towns of Athlone and Tullamore, it collects testimonies from a whole spectrum of women who discuss their husbands and fathers, sons and lovers. The ages range from cradle to grave and the memories touch on the happiest of times and the saddest of occasions. A wonderful slice of life.

HIS GIRL FRIDAY Breathless, helter skelter adaptation of the Broadway classic The Front Page that may be the fastest comedy ever made. Rosalind Russell gives the performance of her career as a star reporter with news print in her veins. She is about to bid her colleagues farewell and marry Ralph Bellamy when a convicted killer escapes from prison on the eve of his execution. It is an irresistible story and conniving editor Grant will do anything to ensure that Russell stays to file his front page. The fact that she is also his ex-wife couldn’t possible have anything to do with his desire to thwart her plans for wedded bliss. Could it?

HOLIDAY One of the great underrated gems from Cary Grant’s early career, Holiday is a magical adaptation of the Philip Barry play with Grant delivering one of his most witty, thoughtful and charming performances. Grant falls in love with New York heiress Doris Nolan but once he meets the parents he feels a whole world of stuffy, stifling high society formality beginning to squeeze the life out of him. Fortunately, Nolan’s unconventional sister is played by a beguiling Katharine Hepburn and so there is a kindred spirit on hand to offer an escape route from a fate that seems signed, sealed and delivered. Sheer delight.

I AM LOVE (IO SONO L’AMORE) Chosen by many critics as one of the best films of the year, I Am Love is a film of breathtaking beauty and formal elegance that invites comparisons with the great masters of world cinema from Visconti and Douglas Sirk to Hitchcock and Antonioni. Set among a wealthy industrial family in Milan, it presents a calm surface that masks a growing emotional turmoil. Tilda Swinton excels as the stylish matriarch only too eager to escape the comfortable prison she has built for herself. Maintaining a formidable control of mood and pace, Luca Guadagnino has created a film that grows more enthralling with every new revelation. 46

I KILLED MY MOTHER (J’AI TUE MA MERE) The turbulent relationship between a mother and a son unfolds with a compelling combination of savage fury and melting affection in I Killed My Mother. This stunning, semiautobiographical tour de force from writer/director/producer and lead actor Xavier Dolan is a film with the sting of shrewdly observed truth. Petulant, floppy-haired gay adolescent Hubert (Dolan) hates every aspect of his mother’s life from the way she eats to the clothes she wears. He isn’t shy about telling her. The film skillfully captures both sides of a complex relationship depicted with brutal honesty and wild humour.

I WAS A MALE WAR BRIDE Sparkling comedy of errors with Cary Grant as you have never seen him before. Grant is a French army officer whose frosty relationship with American WAC Ann Sheridan soon melts into true love and a marriage that takes place on the very day she is ordered home. Now they have to face an army of bureaucrats who insist the only way Grant can leave Europe at such short notice is as a war bride. If those are the rules then he is just going to have to oblige no matter how intense the embarrassment. A hilarious, breezy battle of the sexes romp beautifully played by the two stars.

I’M GLAD THAT MY MOTHER IS ALIVE (Je suis heureux que ma mère soit vivante) Collaborating with his son Nathan, French director Claude Miller has created one of the most expertly crafted, heartrending dramas of his long career. Inspired by a true incident, the film tells the story of Thomas (Vincent Rottiers). Given up for adoption by his teenage mother Julie (Sophie Cattani), Thomas has grown into an angry young man. He is obsessed with the woman who abandoned him and unable to fully embrace the kind-hearted couple who have given him a loving home. Beautifully acted by Rottiers and Cattani, this is a tenderly observed exploration of the way we hurt the ones we love the most.

THE INVISIBLE FRAME + CYCLING THE FRAME In 1988 director Cynthia Beatt invited Tilda Swinton and sound artist Simon Fisher Turner to join her on a filmic adventure, cycling along the Berlin Wall. They wanted to document the places the Wall had cut through, but also tried to capture West Berlin’s introspection as well as glimpses of East Berlin on the other side of the Wall. In the summer of 2009 they returned to re-trace the now ‘invisible frame’ in a second film - this time meandering between its two sides, looking for what has changed.

ISLAND OF DREAMS (YUME NO SHIMA) Tsuta Tetsuichiro was just 23 when he made this eyecatching debut feature, a loving throwback to the Nikkatsu film noir action movies of the early 1960s. Shot in black and white cinemascope, it focuses on Alan, a young man of Indian descent who works on the notorious artificial island/rubbish dump in Tokyo Bay known as Dream Island. Appalled by Japan’s casual disregard for the environment, he turns eco-terrorist targetting factories in Tokyo with his home made bombs. Detective Terayama races against the clock to prevent a major incident in a suspenseful retro thriller with a strong social conscience.

KAKERA Director Momoko Ando has been earning comparisons with Sofia Coppola for her haunting debut feature. Loosely based on the manga title Love Vibes, Kakera follows dreamy college student Haru. Coasting along in a dull relationship with her loutish boyfriend, she meets Riko, a woman who works as a prothetist. There is an immediate spark between the two women that Riko is keen to explore further. Haru is won over by Riko’s attention and passion but finds herself facing an entirely new set of problems in a relationship that grows increasingly intense and suffocating. Richard is a British engineer under contract to clear the landmines that pepper the country. His task is to remain an objective professional regardless of the increasingly intolerable conditions under the Taleban. His situation becomes impossible as his love for a local woman puts him at odds with the regime and places them both in grave danger. An engrossing, tautly handled personal tale from the front line of a country in permanent conflict.

KICKING IT A chronicle of the experience of seven homeless football players representing their country at the Cape Town 2006 Homeless World Cup. Najib from war torn Afghanistan; Alex from the slums of Kenya; Damien and Simon from the drug rehab clinics of Dublin; Craig from the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina; Jesus from the shelters of Madrid and Slavan from St. Petersburg. The seven heroes on the pitch have a harder game to play getting off the streets, and out of their horrific situations.

KNICKERBOCKER GLORY New Media Scotland presents a programme of animated shorts with a CGI focus. Each film reveals the effects of life’s little tremors through a variety of trails and transformations, both physical and emotional. Imagine a world made of logos overrun by the characters of various corporations, a man coming to terms with a sense of displacement after he’s dramatically hit by a meteorite, or a new perspective on society caused by the loss of a wallet and a lot of caffeine. Thankfully the day will be saved in a swoosh.

LA DANSE - THE PARIS OPERA BALLET Frederick Wiseman has long been considered one of the world’s master documentary filmmakers. Now he has turned his searching eye on the Paris Opera Ballet offering the viewer an amazing access-all-areas pass to one of the most celebrated dance companies. His immersion in the art and craft of ballet means a wide-ranging production that glides effortlessly from the sweat and discipline of the rehearsal studio to the tireless work of the marketing department. A generous benefactor can pay $25,000 for the privilege of sitting in on a rehearsal. Here, all you need is a cinema ticket. A must for dance lovers.

L’AFFAIRE FAREWELL

Gala

Joyeux Noel director Christian Carion makes a confident move into the world of John Le Carre with this atmospheric Cold War thriller. Set in the Moscow of 1981 it deftly captures the human toll on those at the front line of the spying game. Guillaume (Tell No One) Canet stars as a French engineer recruited as a middle man between French intelligence and KGB spy Emir Kusturica who has decided to leak explosive documents that could trigger the fall of the Soviet Union. A tense, brooding tale of cat and mouse intrigue with a powerful international cast that also includes Fred Ward as President Ronald Reagan.

LEAVING (PARTIR) Leaving tells one of the oldest stories in the world as a married woman leaves her husband for the arms of another man. The consequences of her infidelity are less conventional and more intriguing as the aggrieved husband retaliates with a concerted campaign of economic warfare designed to destroy their lives. Kristin Scott Thomas’ Suzanne has been married for twenty years and is the mother of two grown children. When she falls passionately in love with hunky Spanish handyman Ivan (Sergi Lopez) she grabs the chance of a new life in a steamy melodrama with an irresistible cast.

LEBANON (LEVANONE) Samuel Maoz’s extraordinary autobiographical debut feature Lebanon won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Maoz was a twenty-year-old novice soldier in the early days of the first Lebanon war in 1982. Traumatised by his experiences, he ultimately decided to confront the past by creating a fictionalised version of harrowing true events. The film follows four young Israel soldiers in a single tank on a mission to enter a Lebanese village and clear it of possible PLO terrorists. It is a mission that goes horribly wrong resulting in death, destruction and a claustrophobic, sweatily convincing account of the living hell of modern warfare.

LIFE DURING WARTIME Todd Solondz makes a remarkable return to form with this unconventional sequel to his award-winning Happiness. Solondz revisits the same characters a decade later with the added twist of a completely different all-star cast. Ciaran Hinds is a convicted paedophile about to be released back into society. Allison Janney is his neurotic ex-wife seeking a second chance at a ‘normal life’ with the older Michael Lerner. Shirley Henderson is Janney’s sister trapped by her memories of old lovers. All of them are haunted by the past, in a caustic exploration of family ties, secrets, lies and the endless bittersweet search for a state of happiness. 50

THE LIST SURPRISE FILM To paraphrase Forrest Gump, “The Surprise Film is like a box of chocolates-you never know what you’re gonna get.” Last year we even surprised ourselves by showing O’Horten which proved to be one of the year’s loveliest foreign-language films. Previous surprises include Inland Empire and Son Of Rambow. Maybe it really is time for a great big Hollywood blockbuster? On the other hand there are so many fine films from the Soviet silent era that deserve to be much better known. Hazelnut heaven or caramel caress? You will only find out on the night.

THE LITTLE ONE (LA PIVELLINA) Documentary duo Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel make an auspicious move into narrative filmmaking with this low-budget charmer set among an extended family of Rome-based circus folk. Patti is wandering the streets of suburban Rome in search of her runaway dog Hercules when she spots a two-year old girl sitting on a swing. The child appears to have been abandoned and so Patti decides to take her home. The little girl is adorable and is soon befriended by teenager Tairo and the whole circus. They all know they should contact the police but cannot contemplate letting her go in a tale performed with amazing grace by a non-professional cast.

A LIZARD IN A WOMAN’S SKIN Where do dark dreams end and repulsive reality begin? Find out in the re-mastered, restored and never-before-seen fully uncut version of Italian gore-meister Lucio Fulci’s hippy, trippy 1971 giallo classic. Did rich socialite Carol Hammond (gialli goddess Florinda Bolkan) kill her nymphomaniac neighbour during a depraved orgy of LSD-induced sadistic sex? Or is her philandering husband framing her? Swinging London decadence, scandalous blackmail, neurotic visions and gory throat slashing all wrapped up in one of Ennio Morricone’s finest scores. Quirky touches of Fulci fantasy horror make this stylish psycho thriller a quintessential masterpiece of the giallo genre.

LOURDES Lourdes is a magnet for Christian pilgrims in search of a miracle. It has the second largest number of hotels in France after Paris. Jessica Hausner’s feature follows the longings and yearnings of one particular pilgrim. Christine is confined to a wheelchair and desperate for company and comfort. She adopts an attitude of piety so that she is made welcome on church trips. Befriending believers and sceptics alike, Christine is revealed as an incredibly poignant figure whose pilgrimage unfolds in sardonic encounters, awkward conversations and a touching central performance from Sylvie Testud.

LOVE AND RAGE (VANVITTIG FORELSKET) Cyron Bjorn Melville’s intense, utterly believable central performance won him the Best Actor prize at Montreal and is the lynchpin of this tautly handled psychological thriller. Melville’s Daniel is a gifted, highly strung pianist in Copenhagen, ambitious to win a place at Julliard. Suffering from stage fright and struggling to come to terms with his father’s suicide, his life gets back on track when he finds a professional mentor and a loving girlfriend in Sofie. It is the calm before the storm as Daniel’s paranoia and jealousy eat away at his happiness, convincing him that neither Sofie nor his mentor can be trusted.

Comic books have taken on a resurgence over the past few years, perhaps in no small part due to the talent of the Coatbridge born phenomenon, Mark Millar. The writer of the American industry’s biggest selling books in a decade, his career started by dropping out of university for stints at 2000AD, Warner Brothers and most recently Marvel Entertainment where he has been in charge of X-Men, Spider-Man and all their best known characters. His own creations too have been successful movie spin-offs including Wanted (with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie) and the forthcoming Nicolas Cage feature Kick-Ass. Next up is Wanted 2, American Jesus and War Heroes for Sony Pictures. Mark will take questions from both fans and aspiring writers alike, and talk about writing, producing and his forthcoming directorial debut. Despite many offers to relocate, he will be travelling to this event from his home in Glasgow.

NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU After the enormous success of Paris je t’aime it was only a matter of time before the whole process was repeated in another iconic city. New York, I Love You invites eleven international filmmakers to offer their vision of the Big Apple and the diverse crosssection of individuals seeking to find romance and relationships within its warm embrace. Highlights include Julie Christie as a melancholy retired opera singer, Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman as a bickering elderly couple, Natalie Portman’s tender tale of a divorced couple and the children trapped by their bitterness and Albert Hughes’ memorable evocation of a passionate one night stand.

NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT PERSIAN CATS (KASI AZ GORBEHAYEH IRANI KHaBAR NADAREH) Filmed in seventeen days under the eyes of disapproving authorities, No One Knows About Persian Cats is an eye-opening account of the underground music scene in Tehran. Inspired by true events, it follows musicians Negar and Ashkan as they strive to assemble a rock/heavy metal band in a society where playing western music is a crime and women are forbidden to perform any kind of music. Desperate to obtain passports and visas for the band, the duo meet music promoter Nader and the film becomes a fast-paced odyssey through the streets of Tehran blending dark humour and stark drama with the authenticity of a documentary.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST The perfect Hitchcock thriller with Cary Grant at his debonair best as an innocent advertising executive mistakenly identified as a mythical figure fabricated by the C.I.A. Soon, he stands accused of murder and is running for his life tangled up in the velvety villainy of James Mason and falling in love with ice cool blonde Eva Marie Saint. A wonderful cocktail of cliffhanging adventure and witty romance peppered with virtuoso moments from the crop duster attack on a lonely desert highway to the nailbiting finale on the treacherous slopes of Mount Rushmore. A thrilling experience in this special 50th anniversary print.

NOTORIOUS Alfred Hitchcock offers one of his most polished romantic thrillers in which Cary Grant is partnered by one of his favourite co-stars, Ingrid Bergman. Grant is an American agent hot on the trail of a dastardly international conspiracy. Party girl Bergman is the daughter of a convicted spy given a chance to redeem herself by working undercover to seduce Nazi agent Claude Rains. The more she risks her life, the more the helpless Grant falls in love with her. The result is a tense cloak and dagger mystery with an electric chemistry between the two stars and scene-stealing villainy from an Oscar-nominated Rains. Unmissable.

OLD PARTNER (WONANGSORI) Raymond Depardon’s Modern Life was one of the documentary highlights of the 2009 Glasgow Film Festival. Old Partner is a similarly lyrical, touching portrait of a disappearing way of rural life that has become the biggest independent box-office hit in the history of Korean cinema. Octogenarian farmer Choi and his wife have been together for forty years but there has always been a third partner in their marriage - their loyal, hard-working ox. All of them are approaching the end of their days and Old Partner beautifully captures the loving bond between two soulmates and the farmer’s wife.

ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS Terrific adventure yarn with Cary Grant as the hardbitten head of an air freight company dispatching pilots on treacherous missions through the Andes mountains. Jean Arthur is the sexy, smart-talking Brooklyn chorus girl intent on becoming one of the boys as she sets her sights on melting Grant’s cold heart. Oscar-nominated visual effects add an extra edge to a compelling character study of flawed individuals enduring unbearable pressure from the hazards of their profession and the claustrophobic setting of their tiny quarters in the mist enshrouded mountains. A quintessential Howard Hawks tale of courage under fire.

PACHAMAMA Inhabiting the desolate, but eerily beautiful salt plains of Bolivia, this tells the story of a dying tradition through a father and son. Their respect for ‘Pachamama’ (translation – Mother Earth) is strong, but gradually western influences are changing the small towns the father and son pass through, trading salt for other goods. Beautiful photography detail an area and a way of life few westerners witness for themselves.

PANDORA AND THE FLYING DUTCHMAN One of the most beautiful romantic tales in the history of cinema, Pandora And The Flying Dutchman is a haunting story of love, devotion and self-sacrifice. Played by a gorgeous Ava Gardner, Pandora Reynolds is the kind of woman who treats a string of admirers with thinly disguised contempt. Then she meets the mysterious Hendrick (James Mason), a man condemned to roam the seas throughout eternity. Every seven years he is allowed to live as a mortal. If he can win the love of a girl willing to die for him his ordeal will be ended. Shot in ravishing Technicolor by Jack Cardiff, this is a classic that deserves to be as feted and loved as the work of Powell & Pressburger. 54

THE SPECTACLE After Pere Ubu’s Legendary Live Score to a 3D version of They Came From Outer Space at the Arches a few years back, David Thomas and his band are welcomed back to Glasgow. “Long Live Père Ubu!” is inspired by the proto-Absurdist stage play that gave the band its name – Alfred Jarry’s “Ubu Roi” (King Ubu). This vicious and satiric re-telling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth lambastes do-gooder monsters and the survival of the Unfit. Pere Ubu has devised an extraordinary concert event that involves connective dialogue, electronic ambience, choreography, and animations by legendary filmmakers The Brothers Quay. PUNISHMENT PARK Tying in with Duncan Campbell’s exploration of historical narrative, Punishment Park is typical of Peter Watkins’ radical approach to filmmaking, mixing improvisational, dramatic and documentary techniques to incredible and innovative effect. RAN Legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa was born in March 1910. We celebrate the centenary of his birth with a screening of one of his most enduring achievements. The Oscar-winning Ran offers a majestic reinterpretation of King Lear as a warlord divides his kingdom between his three sons plunging the country into chaos as the two elder sons battle for supremacy. Peerless storytelling that reveals Kurosawa’s dazzling command of the film medium from the quality of the performances to the beauty of the images and epic battle scenes that haunt the memory. A true classic of international cinema.

[REC] 2 FrightFest welcomed co-directors Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza to Glasgow for the UK premiere of their smash hit [REC]. So it’s only fitting we premiere [REC] 2, their real-time sequel taking off the moment its predecessor ends. With TV presenter Manuela Velasco being dragged away into the night, darkness causes the audience’s adrenalin to keep on pumping while uncanny satanic thrills ramp up the shockudrama even more. This is another non-stop ride of frenetic camerawork, jolting scares and pulse-pounding suspense from the talented Spanish duo. Be amazed and surprised by where this horrific virus borne through blood and saliva goes next.

REYKJAVIK WHALE WATCHING MASSACRE You don’t have to go to Texas for a brutal massacre. Try cold Icelandic waters instead. That’s where a group of tourists embark on a sightseeing trip aboard a whaling vessel with none other than Captain Gunnar (Leatherface) Hansen himself. When the ship breaks down, the terror starts as the day-trippers come under attack from a crew of deranged Fishbillies hellbent on mayhem and slaughter. Let the bloody sea battle begin in director Julius Kemp’s horror comedy hybrid with a strong surreal flavour, the first exploitation film ever made by the Icelandic Film Industry

ROOM AND A HALF A labour of love for director Andrey Khrzhanovsky, Room And A Half combines drama, documentary footage, archive material and animation to create a richly imaginative, semi-fictionalised biography of Nobel prize-winning Russian poet Josef Brodsky. Considered one of the greatest poets of the past century, Brodsky was exiled to America in 1972 and never returned. The film imagines a fictional homeward journey in which Brodsky reflects on his life from a happy childhood to a troubled exile. Inspired by Brodsky’s autobiographical essays this Festival favourite is witty, charming and brimming with pathos.

SAVAGE Drawing comparisons to Shane Meadows’ masterful Dead Man’s Shoes, this is a classic revenge thriller, set in Dublin. Healy plays photographer Paul Graynor, the victim of a horrific assault that he struggles to overcome, until choosing a path of vengeance. Most of the film is shot at night, a dark but intriguing portrayal of a European city asleep but in a nightmare for the troubled lead. Savage is a very apt title for a very uncomfortable and chilling conclusion.

SCHEHERAZADE, TELL ME A STORY (EHKY YA SCHAHRAZAD) Yousry Nasrallah has been called a master of compelling narratives infused with telling social critique. Scheherazade is his most polished and provocative work offering a view of Egypt rarely seen in the western media. Mona Zakki stars as an outspoken talk-show host who sacrifices her career to the political ambitions of her husband. Re-assigned to cover softer “women’s stories”, she discovers a world of tales about the ordinary lives and struggles of Egyptian women that are just as incendiary, especially when she uncovers the tragic story of three sisters and the labourer who works for them.

SCOTTISH PRODUCTION ARCHIVE: PETER MULLAN Scotland has produced outstanding directors, writers and actors in recent times but only one person has truly mastered all of these functions while maintaining an unparalleled and intense clarity of artistic vision. Peter Mullan’s performances have illuminated celebrated films like Trainspotting, My Name is Joe and Young Adam and as a writer/director he has excelled with Orphans and The Magdalene Sisters. Now in post-production on Neds, Peter is the very first subject of a new initiative of the University of the West of Scotland. The UWS SPA is designed to capture and collate accounts of the recent history of film and TV in Scotland, and will also establish a research and information database to complement and support Scotland’s production activity.

THE SCOUTING BOOK FOR BOYS Teenager David helps his runaway friend Emily disappear. But, as the police close in, their relationship becomes more complicated. We hope that actor Thomas Turgoose (This is England, Sommerstown) and director Tom Harper will join us for this Scottish premiere.

SHE, A CHINESE (ZHONGGUO GUNIANG) The latest feature from director Xiaolu Guo (How Is Your Fish Today?), follows a sullen, stubborn Chinese girl on a journey from her small village to London. Li Mei endures a miserable life in rural China. The first stage on her journey is a bus to Chongqing where she finds work in a succession of dead end jobs and meets a hitman. The calendar in his room has a picture of Big Ben which becomes her inspiration for the dream of a fresh start in a faraway land that doesn’t always live up to her expectations. A lowbudget drama delicately capturing the fragments of a broken life.

SHORT DOCUMENTARY FILM CASE STUDY: THE INNER SHAPE BY JOHANNA WAGNER The Inner Shape was Johanna Wagner’s graduation film from the MA Directing course at Edinburgh Skillset Screen and Media Screen Academy. The film went on to win the Best Short Film award at BAFTA Scotland New Talent Awards in 2008. In conversation with Head of Film & TV at Edinburgh College of Art, Emma Davie, Johanna describes the process of making the film from idea to distribution and the support that she received from the Screen Academy along the way.

THE SILENT ARMY An unsentimental drama on the plight of African child soldiers, The Silent Army combines the gritty authenticity of a documentary with the pace and adrenaline rush of a thriller. Eduard owns a restaurant in an unnamed African city. When his wife is killed in a car accident, Eduard is left with the responsibility of raising their nine year-old son Thomas. When Thomas’s best friend Abu is abducted during an attack by rebel soldiers, Eduard goes in search of the boy on a journey that opens his eyes to the injustice and violence that has been all around him. A sensitive, hard-hitting tale fuelled by righteous anger.

SITA SINGS THE BLUES A colourful and musical interpretation of the Ramayana legend set to the soulful jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw. The live event is preceded by a 22minute documentary, Hikikomori, by Francesco Jodice and Kal Karman.

SOUNDLESS WIND CHIME As dreamy and seductive as a Wong Kar-Wai romance, Soundless Wind Chime offers a lyrical autobiographical tale of love, loss and bittersweet memories from writer/ director Kit Hung. Ricky has just arrived in Hong Kong from Beijing when he meets and falls in love with Swiss juggler Pascal. Their relationship is passionate, intense and tragically shortlived. Ricky subsequently heads to Switzerland is search of solace and closure. Instead, he meets Ueli who bears a striking resemblance to Pascal. Filmed on beautiful international locations, Soundless Wind Chime is a beguiling metaphysical musing on the power of love.

SPACE & LIGHT REVISITED St Peter’s Seminary at Cardross is Scotland’s neglected modernist masterpiece, a triumphant creation of ‘sacred space’ in 1966, but closed and abandoned only 14 years later. In 1972 filmmaker Murray Grigor celebrated the building in a near-wordless 20-minute film, with music by Frank Spedding. In February 2009 he returned to the derelict, graffiti-ridden site to make an exact shot-for-shot remake. We present the new film projected alongside the restored original in a remarkable time-spanning cinema diptych, with a new recording of the score by students of RSAMD.

SPLICE From Vincenzo Natali, director of Cube and Cypher, and visionary producer Guillermo del Toro, comes a new kind of monster movie. Rebellious scientists Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named ‘Dren’ the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators. But then that bond turns deadly in a Frankenstein fable for the modern era showcasing stunning special effects and startling fantasy imagery.

The film then becomes more of a political thriller, lifting the lid on modern day slavery with the help of very brave people unafraid to speak out against their oppression.

When the case crumbles, Fox heads to Bosnia in search of fresh evidence, uncovering allegations of a vicious rape and murder. STRIGOI There is no more fashionable genre than the vampire film but Faye Jackson’s beautiful, blackly humorous debut feature Strigoi brings something fresh to the table. Steeped in the folklore traditions of Romania, it follows prodigal son Vlad as he returns to his home village. The locals seem wary of his presence and suddenly more prosperous. Once feared officials are only seen in the dark of night. The dead are restless in their graves and Vlad’s family have their own secrets to hide in a rich red stew of deadpan comedy, blood ties, class conflict and the realities of life before and after Ceausescu.

TERRIBLY HAPPY (FRYGTELIG LYKKELIG) Filled with clever twists and caustic humour, Terribly Happy is a cracking thriller that has been earning comparisons with the best of the Coen brothers. Cop Jakob Cedergren is emerging from the other side of a mental breakdown when he is posted to the small border town of Skarrild. The locals hardly welcome him or any concepts of traditional justice. Lene Maria Christensen is the distressed damsel who begs his help to escape from the clutches of an abusive husband, played by the menacing Kim Bodnia. Events unfold but not quite in the manner you might expect in this smart, taught adaptation of the Erling Jepsen novel.

THAT EVENING SUN Hal Holbrook’s Oscar-nominated performance was one of the highlights of Into The Wild. The veteran actor gives another glorious careercapping performance here as Abner, an irascible Tennessee farmer determined to spend his final days on the family farm. Escaping from a nursing facility, he discovers that his son has rented the property to a thirtysomething ne’er-do-well. Fearing for the future, he moves into a shack on the farm and a battle of wills slowly escalates into a desperate feud. A beautifully acted human drama from the American heartland that has become an audience favourite at international festivals.

Join Ray Tintori (soon to be directing his Spike Jonze-produced feature debut) as he introduces the collective’s films and music promos, including the long overdue UK premiere of the colossal Glory At Sea, a modern myth filmed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and his recent controversial promo for MGMT’s ‘Kids’.

THOMAS TRUAX: SONGS FROM THE FILMS OF DAVID LYNCH Thomas Truax has recorded a covers album made up of songs featured in David Lynch’s films and, somewhat paradoxically, made them somehow more Lynchian. Beyond merely being a stylistic exercise, it’s a celebration and renewal of some great songs. When he performs, it is a spectacle - the originality and seeming impossibility of what he does is much of the appeal.

TO CATCH A THIEF Persuaded back to the screen after his premature retirement in 1953, Cary Grant displays all his old magic in this stylish Hitchcock cocktail of mystery and romance. Oscar-winning cinematography from Robert Burks makes the Cote d’Azur sparkle with the inviting warmth of a shimmering blue ocean. Grant is a retired jewel thief alarmed that a devious crook appears to be copying his style. Grace Kelly joins in the fun to discover whether he’s telling the truth and if he still has what it takes to impress. Witty banter, glamorous locations and Oscarnominated fashions from the legendary Edith Head make this lightweight romp the epitome of chic escapism

the TOPP TWINS: UNTOUCHABLE GIRLS Where have these girls been all our lives? The Topp Twins is a joyous crowdpleaser celebrating the life and times of Kiwi icons Lynda and Jools Topp. The lesbian twin sisters have become national treasures with an infectious act of yodelling, country and western music and boisterous comic asides. Leanne Pooley’s documentary brings together a fascinating collection of archive material, concert footage and interviews with Billy Bragg and former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark. The more Pooley reveals, the more astonishing the girls’ lives become as entertainers and activists for gay equality, Maori rights, nuclear disarmament and anti-apartheid. To watch this film is to fall in love with it.

TORMOD: AN AUDIENCE WITH ROBBIE FRASER

QuickTime™ and a Photo - JPEG decompressor are needed to see this picture.

Robbie Fraser is one of Gaelic’s most prolific and innovative young directors with his most recent works premiering on BBC Alba to critical acclaim. Robbie spent much of the last nine months living and breathing Norman MacLean to produce this brilliant retrospective on this amazing man’s life: Tormod. Robbie will be talking about his experience working with a tortured genius and some of his other works. Please join us for a drink and an opportunity to network after this event. All ticket holders for this event will receive a discounted entry Passing Places (see p55).

TRUCKER Michelle Monaghan gives the performance of her career in this enormously likable melodrama. Monaghan’s Diane is a harddrinking, independent truck driver who lives life according to her own set of rules. When her ex-husband reveals that he is terminally ill, she must finally assume responsibility for the son she abandoned years earlier. You may guess the outcome but what makes it so fresh and moving is the strength of the performances with Jimmy Bennett capturing the resentment and wariness of the boy and Monaghan refusing to sugar-coat her portrait of a selfish woman forced to re-think her priorities.

UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US This is a biopic of black metal music from Norway, directed by two Americans who were outsiders to the scene before becoming involved in arson, suicide and murder. We did say it was black. As the genre begins to garner more attention from other musicians, this documentary attempts to shed light on an admittedly dark subject. One lead singer of a metal group, Per Yngve Ohlin blew his brains out, leaving a suicide note that said ‘Sorry for the mess.’ Thankfully, there are other musicians featured with craniums intact.

VACATION (KYUKA) Capital punishment remains a highly contentious issue in Japanese society. Without recourse to tear-jerking melodrama, Hajime Kadoi creates a compassionate, moving drama around the issues of law and order. Hirai is a middle-aged prison guard worn down by the daily grind of his job. Kaneda is a model inmate on death row. When a date is set for Kaneda’s execution, Hirai is asked to assist the prisoner in his final moments. The reward is a week’s vacation in time for his honeymoon. The cost is accompanying Kaneda through his final meal, his last hours and physically supporting him as the execution takes place.

VINCERE The official version of Benito Mussolini’s early life overlooks the fact that he had a wife and a son. Veteran director Marco Bellocchio drags that hidden relationship into the spotlight for a bravura film with startling insights into the true nature of Il Duce. The young Mussolini met Ida Dalser in 1907. It was Ida who financed his political career. She bore him a son and became his wife only to discover that her husband had married another woman and would gradually erase her from his life. Told with all the passion and energy of a grand opera, Vincere combines newsreel footage and fiery performances to haunting effect.

WAKE IN FRIGHT First shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 1971 Wake In Fright has been described by Nick Cave as “the best and most terrifying film about Australia in existence”. Long considered a lost masterpiece, it has now been rediscovered and beautifully restored to a fresh wave of acclaim. Gary Bond stars as a young teacher who plans to stay overnight in a rough outback mining town before catching a plane to Sydney. One night becomes a five day alcohol-fuelled odyssey of drinking, gambling, selfloathing and self-destruction. A raw, uncompromising work from director Ted Kotcheff that deserves to be much better known.

WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE: A FILM ABOUT THE DOORS Whilst the term ‘iconic’ is overused, few would argue that it can appropriately attached to the 1960s rock group The Doors. The Oliver Stone biopic delivered a generation of new fans to the band, and this documentary will provide factual information on a ground breaking (and occasionally law breaking) group. The film not only features interviews with all four band members, but also footage filmed by Jim Morrison himself. The film is narrated by Johnny Depp, and attempts to uncover the truth behind a great deal of myth, not least that Morrison faked his own death.

WHIP IT Drew Barrymore makes a confident move into the director’s chair with this rollicking sports comedy set in the bruising world of competitive roller-skating. Ellen (Juno) Page is the tough Texas tomboy encouraged to enter beauty pageants by her doting mom Marcia Gay Harden. A clandestine trip to a roller derby night in Austin introduces her to a world of kneepads and fishnets and derby girls called Iron Maven and Bloody Holly. The girl has found her true home and never looks back as she starts leading a thrilling double-life. Great fun especially when you realise that all the famous names did their own stunts.

WHISKY AND VODKA (WHISKY MIT VODKA) Renowned actor Otto has two loves - drinking and film. Fitting for the title, there are elements of fun and melancholy in this comedy drama. Even when blind drunk he still has more vision in filmmaking than the amateur directing his latest movie. Otto makes a mess of things on the film, inevitably being replaced by an understudy who is a fan of the older actor. With witty dialogue, and a complicated interplay between the star, his director and love interest, Whisky and Vodka has a great spirit that shines on the screen.

WHITE STRIPES UNDER GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS A ‘brother and sister’s’ journey across the great white north, as we are invited to join the White Stripes on their 2007 Canadian tour. The tour, like this portrayal, is epic, featuring a stop in every province and territory and an intimate look at the relationships between Jack, Meg... and their many fans. Feedback-infused blues are shot in the band’s trademark colours of black, red and white. Fans are treated to many free shows, including playing a city bus in Winnipeg, and a flour mill – an uplifting or ‘self raising’ appearance. Sorry – see the film.

WILLIAM MCLAREN AN ARTIST OUT OF TIME William McLaren was a prolific Scottish painter, illustrator and decorative artist who died in 1987 and has never received the recognition he deserves. This fascinating pioneering documentary has traced hundreds of his works and gathered the testimony of those who knew him. A graduate of the Edinburgh College Of Art, McLaren was a regular illustrator for the Radio Times and created a series of paintings for the staircase of Hopetoun House and many commissions for public buildings where he developed his trompe l’oeil style. Screening with the award-winning documentary And So Goodbye which led the filmmakers to their interest in McLaren.

WITH ONE VOICE (D’UNE SEULE VOIX) Recording choirs in conflict zones around the world is the unconventional day job for a French filmmaker who grew up in the relative multiracial harmony of New York. A musician himself, Xavier de Lauzanne took on the arduous task of uniting Israeli and Palestinian musicians. The political divides between the musicians are not instantly forgotten, but ultimately overcome in the desire to share music and experiences. This record of a musical tour with a difference also documents those involved as they unite as brothers and sisters.

WOMEN WITHOUT MEN (ZANAN-E BEDUN-E MARDAN) Internationally renowned for her photography and video installations, Shirin Neshat’s feature debut won the Silver Lion at Venice and is a powerful adaptation of the controversial Shahrnush Parsipur novella set in Tehran on the eve of the CIA-backed coup that restored the Shah to power in 1953. The film deftly interweaves the stories of several women striving to escape the clutches of their society and achieve independence. The poignant characters include Munis who is at the mercy of her brother, army wife Fakhri and prostitute Zarin. A gorgeous, involving, multi-layered drama.

YATTERMAN (YATTAMAN) Director Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi The Killer) underscores his cult reputation with this frantic big screen adaptation of the hit 1970s television anime. Marbled with explosive action sequences, raunchy innuendo and goofy humour, the film is a breathless spectacle with echoes of Indiana Jones and Barbarella. Aided by their giant canine robot, teenager Gan Takada and girlfriend Ai Fukuda are locked in eternal battle with the evil Lady Doronjo who seems to buy her clothes from the same fetish shop as Halle Berry’s Catwoman. Their goal is possession of an all-powerful Skull Stone that could obliterate the planet. A wild, fun-filled guilty pleasure.

ZERO FOCUS (ZERO NO shôten) Seicho Matsumoto is renowned as one of the finest post-War Japanese thriller writers. Zero Focus was originally published in serial form in the late 1950s and became one of his most popular titles. Previously filmed in 1961, it has now been brought to the screen in a sumptuous new version that remains true to the late 1940s setting and the story of a young woman whose husband goes missing shortly after their wedding night. The quest to discover what became of him forces her to turn detective as she uncovers dark secrets and a shocking truth in this supremely stylish Hitchcockian suspense story.

ZOMBIE ZOMBIE PERFORM THE MUSIC OF JOHN CARPENTER Glasgow Music and Film Festival have specially commissioned Zombie Zombie (Paris) to perform a tribute to the music of John Carpenter alongside some of their own compositions. Carpenter and Zombie Zombie alike, use sound and rhythm to explore the feeling of fear growing deep from within, like in a horror movie, when your car won’t start, and someone is trying to kill you. Zombie Zombie are led by Professor Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman (from Herman Dune). A full a/v show will accompany. £
