5 Tips on Getting a Divorce without Jeopardizing Your Future Divorce can be a very stressful and dirty phase that 2 people have to go through in life. This is somewhat an accepted reality to the most of us. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to destroy our lives in the process. Laura Wasser, the author of “It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way: How to Divorce Without Destroying Your Family or Bankrupting Yourself”, gives us some pointers on how to go through a divorce without having to experience the ugly parts. Here are 5 of the best tips from Wasser’s book.
1. Go over it with your partner in a thoughtful and loving way The way you say that “it’s over” will set the tone for the whole divorce proceedings. If you start out on a bitter or scornful tone then expect the whole thing to be as ugly as divorce proceedings can get. Talk to your partner and tell him/her that this is the only way for your guys to move forward together without killing each other. Adding humor every now and then won’t hurt.
2. Get a good therapist When going through a divorce, you need a fairly objective person to who can guide you through this traumatic experience. Don’t tell me you don’t need a therapist. That’s the number one sign that you do need a therapist.
3. Get a good lawyer Nowadays, you don’t need to look for a “pitbull” lawyer who would go to such great lengths for you and your case. Due to the “no-fault divorces” adopted by all the US states today, you no longer need to prove that your ex-partner is guilty of wrongdoing for a divorce to push through. 4. Don’t try to hide your assets We are already in the digital world so I guess it is pretty dumb if you would try to hide some of your assets prior to a divorce. Always remember that the cardinal rule to the discovery process – the part where there is disclosure of a lawsuit before a trial – is to “put it all out there”.
5. Make a Punch list As you both are nearing the end of your divorce proceedings. Talk to your ex-partner and make a “punch list” which should contain the very last tasks you need to do before the divorce can be final. Assign tasks between yourselves to make everything easier. Set deadlines for yourself and your lawyers.

Steven J. Glaros grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Southeastern Louisiana University where he graduated Cum Laude and received the Roy E. Hyde Award for Top Graduate in Major.
Steven attended law school at Thomas M. Cooley Law
School in Lansing, Michigan where he received his Juris Doctor after only two years in the school's accelerated program. While there he participated in the American Bar Association, Moot Court Competition and was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Fraternity.
Initially, Steven worked under then Attorney General Charlie Crist for the State of Florida as an Assistant Attorney General in St. Petersburg, Florida. As an Assistant Attorney General he researched, drafted pleadings and litigated thousands of trials. Thereafter, he joined a law firm in Palm Harbor, Florida as their primary family law associate. While there he managed a high number of primarily family law cases; his emphasis being divorce, child custody, domestic violence injunctions, and dependency.
Steven became a solo practitioner where he represented mostly family law matters. Steven's experience includes representation of several divorcing wives of other Family Law attorneys and has prevailed in many highly contested custody battles. Steven has completed the Supreme Court of Florida certification course for family law mediators and will soon be a Supreme Court of Florida Certified Family Law Mediator.
