Glamorgan News Departures for Owen and Wright

Glamorgan players Will Owen and Ben Wright have decided to retire from cricket. Ben Wright is hanging up his boots to pursue other employment opportunities, whilst Will Owen has called time on his career following a lengthy battle with back and hip injuries that included multiple surgeries. Talented right-hander Wright represented England U19s between 2005 and 2007, scored 72 on debut for Glamorgan in 2006 and went on to win his county cap in 2011, amassing 3684 first-class runs for the Welsh county.

It has not been an easy decision, but I'm very excited to be starting a fresh challenge.

It is with great disappointment that I announce my retirement. The last couple of seasons have been very difficult as I've tried to get back playing to peak performance.

"After giving it a huge amount of consideration over the last couple of months, I have decided to retire at the end of the season and take up an offer of employment from Press Metal UK." said Ben. "It has not been an easy decision, but I'm very excited to be starting a fresh challenge. Will made his first-class debut for Glamorgan against Gloucestershire in the final County Championship match of the 2007 season and became a member of Glamorgan's 1st XI squad in 2011. He took 30 first-class wickets and also made 69 against Derbyshire, sharing a club-record tenth wicket stand with James Harris. The season before had also seen him claim career best figures in one-day cricket of 5-49 against the Unicorns at Bournemouth. After missing most of 2013 through injury Owen returned to action in the shortest format of the game in 2014, featuring in several of the county's games in the NatWest T20 Blast, but despite surgery and a long period of rehabilitation treatment and training, he has been unable to return the level of performance for first team cricket in 2015. Owen said: "It is with great disappointment that I announce my retirement. The last couple of seasons have been very difficult as I've tried to get back playing to peak performance. On announcing their decisions both Ben and Will thanked everybody at Glamorgan CCC, all supporters, their families and the PCA. Glamorgan Chief Executive, Hugh Morris said, "Both Ben and Will have been good professionals and will be missed both in the dressing room and on the field. We wish them well for the future."

Just the ticket... Glamorgan are pleased to confirm a new partnership with Jockey Club Services, which offers a range of world-class business services to organisations in professional sports in the UK, to deliver ticketing at The SSE Swalec for the next three years. Jockey Club Services' ticketing platform this year alone will process more than 1.5 million tickets for The Jockey Club's 15 racecourses in the course of staging events including the Crabbie's Grand National, the Cheltenham Festival and The Investec Derby. Glamorgan CCC will receive a top grade 'enterprise class' ticketing solution, supported by a team of ticketing experts from The Jockey Club's Business Services department.

Glamorgan agree three-year ticketing deal with Jockey Club Services

The agreement follows a successful trial when Jockey Club Services efficiently delivered the sale of 70,000 tickets for the first Investec Ashes Test Match staged in Cardiff this summer. Beyond ticketing, since its inception Jockey Club Services has provided procurement services for 12 football league clubs and 5 county cricket teams, live music to The Ageas Bowl and has created the Rewards4Cricket Loyalty programme.

"We were very impressed with the professional approach adopted by Jockey Club Services to ensure our Investec Ashes tickets sales process ran smoothly from start to finish. We knew we were in safe hands given their team's experience and their investment in technology. It was not a difficult decision to want to work with them on an ongoing basis to provide the ticketing for all our events at The SSE SWALEC from the start of the next cricket season." Bridgend Down Glamorgan Masters

The game may have ended in defeat, but there were plenty of smiles on the faces of the recently-formed Glamorgan Masters XI and a decent-sized crowd at Newbridge Fields as Bridgend Town won their Twenty20 contest by six wickets on the first Sunday in September. A selection of former Glamorgan cricketers from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s donned their whites again at the home of Bridgend Town CC, as the Welsh county’s former players helped the local club bring down the curtain on their 175th anniversary summer and a season which saw the Club win the First Division of the South Wales Premier League. The idea to form a Glamorgan Masters team has been the brainchild of former Glamorgan players Ian Thomas and Michael Powell, both of whom featured in the team, having floated the idea at the annual get-together of the Glamorgan Former Players Association at The SSE SWALEC in June. With warm support from their former county colleagues, as well as members of the current squad, the outcome was the match on Sunday, September 6th against Bridgend Town,

“The response to our idea has been really positive from both the Glamorgan Former Players Association and by the Club itself,” said Thomas, who now works as a Personal Development Manager for the Professional Cricketers Association. “Several other counties have formed Masters XI`s so the game at Bridgend will allow us to pilot this concept. Hopefully, it can become a once a year event besides giving the former players another chance to meet up, as well as acting as ambassadors for Glamorgan County Cricket Club, and helping to raise valuable funds for good causes.” The Premier League winners for 2015 duly reached their target with over four overs to spare on an afternoon where their ground was bathed in warm September sunshine, and throughout saw former stars Hugh Morris and Steve James, as well as current players Mark Wallace and Dean Cosker mingle with the crowd of around 200, whilst members of the Glamorgan Academy undertook a raffle as part of their fund-raising activities ahead of their winter tour to the Middle East.
