What is the mark of excellence? Is it achieving honours and rewards? Can it be measured in dollars or the number of accolades we receive? The businesses featured in our 2018 Profiles of Excellence know that the pursuit of excellence goes beyond setting high goals and then achieving them. The people we profile are consumed by an inner drive to push themselves to do better each and every day, not only for their own sense

A cornerstone of compassion, experience, and industry knowledge

It is my job to help them to solve their problems by getting them that next move.

F

“Everything is related to land, to the house, to the home,” Michelle Yu, founder of the Michelle Yu Personal Real Estate Company (PREC), says. “I realized that this is a very good business to go into because I can start with the most basic necessity in every family.” Not only does Yu, and the rest of her team at Michelle Yu PREC, start with the family, but it is often the main focal point in their business dealings. Having always wanted to go into social work, Yu bases her company around helping people, first and foremost. Using her expertise in the housing industry and her fierce negotiation skills, Yu determines the needs of her clients and how to solve their problems. “There are so many reasons why people want to move homes,” Yu says. Whether it’s a positive or negative motivation, Yu says, “it is my job to help them to solve their problems by getting them that next move.” Having been in the real estate industry for over 20 years, Michelle Yu is a notable and renowned name within the realty community. With ‘for sale’ and ‘sold’ signs that line the streets of Vancouver, Yu’s success rate and reputation are a testament to the trust that people place in her.

From a young age, Michelle Yu has understood that land is a complex, valuable resource. It’s not simply real estate. It’s also about all the principles she holds close to her heart: family, the home and, as any born entrepreneur would say, recognizing opportunities.

As a top-ranking realtor for more than 15 years, Yu has proven to be an entrepreneurial force to be reckoned with. Under her leadership, Michelle Yu PREC continually strives to reach into new markets and opportunities. In 2010, Michelle Yu PREC entered the field of land assembly, where multiple, consecutive single-family homes are bundled to be sold for the development of condominiums and apartment buildings. In only seven years, Michelle YU PREC has become one of the leading names in land assembly. Yu has gathered a team of associates who are as dedicated to their clients as she is. With two divisions, one in residential real estate and the other in land assembly, the Michelle Yu PREC team has accumulated knowledge and expertise of the entire industry. “Each one of us has a certain task,” Yu says. With the help of a group of professionals, which include engineers, architects, and lawyers, Yu understand real estate from several different angles. “Since I always wanted to be a social worker to help people or families solve problems, now with my company, I can help even more people than if I were just by myself.” Driven by the principle of helping others, Michelle Yu PREC has seen enormous success, on both a business level and on a philanthropic one, too.

Thomas & Associates

excellence

Driven by a commitment to excellence

One of the things we pride ourselves on is hard work, understanding our clients and getting them where they need to get to so they can get on with life.

At Thomas and Associates, your best interests are their top priority. With 30 years of success in resolving family law and estate disputes under their belt, the firm’s trial and appeal lawyers are proving time and again that a simple promise can also be an effective one.

and working on both the trial and appeal side of family law have given him a wide breadth of experience. In addition to dealing with cases throughout and beyond the province, the library of knowledge and experience at Thomas and Associates is worth its weight in gold.

Covering all aspects of family law, Thomas and Associates specializes in custody and access work, as well as the financial aspects of divorce. However, the lawyers at the firm are also highly trained in dealing with a long list of disputes, including relocation and income determination.

“Garry has been working in this for 30 years. There isn’t an issue he hasn’t seen,” Beesley says.

Appreciating that these can be inherently complex issues, Thomas and Associates often brings in experts, such as specialized psychologists, to ensure rigorous and uncompromised research. Over the years, the lawyers at Thomas and Associates have accumulated knowledge that only family lawyers with three decades of experience can have. With this unparalleled foundation, Thomas and Associates lawyers know, like the back of their hands, the ins and outs of every nook and cranny that makes up family law. For instance, they know that income in the family law context is distinct from income under the Income Tax Act. Consequently, one’s income determined under the Income Tax Act is only one indication of what their income is for the purpose of family law. “That is something that we get asked all the time,” says Sabina Beesley, one of the associates, “and only family law lawyers are going to know that.” Garry Thomas, the owner and founder of Thomas and Associates, has worked in family law since his first year of practice. Relocating his practice from New Westminster to the heart of downtown Vancouver is one illustration of Thomas’s commitment to his clients’ best interests. “Being accessible to Vancouver’s trial and appeal courts is one thing, but the priority was to be close to the areas where we could do more good and see more people,” Thomas explains. That being said, being in Vancouver in no way limits Thomas and Associates to representing people who just live in Vancouver. In fact, Thomas started his own practice with the sole mission to better serve his clients. With more control of the way he practises law, Thomas was enabled to be more devoted to his commitment to excellence, a phrase he borrowed from the one of his favourite sports teams, the LA Raiders. “We’re committed to excellence in terms of advancing our clients’ cases and in dealing with the issues,” Thomas says, adding that the issues they deal with are often very complex. With knowledgeable, hardworking, and experienced lawyers behind its name, it is no wonder Thomas and Associates is becoming more people’s number one choice. Racinne Canada Where innovation meets nature

A

A Korean skin care company is breaking new ground in the industry by returning to its roots. Racinne Canada, a company based out of Korea, has developed a new way to make skin look younger and brighter. Racinne uses advanced biotechnology to extract plant stem cells, called plant callus extracts, found in the roots of certain plants. “The root is the most nutrient part,” says Vivian Lam, the business manager at Racinne Canada. “We use all of the plant callus extracts in our products, which help to regenerate and heal skin much quicker.” This method, called the callus cultivation technology, has taken scientists at Racinne seven years to perfect. Within that time, Racinne expanded to the international stage, with locations around the world, including Australia, Canada, Singapore, and Japan. Now, with this technology that is exclusive to Racinne, people everywhere can use Racinne skincare products that have been scientifically engineered to heal scars, blemishes and wounds faster. “Let’s say you have a scar,” Lam says. “It usually takes four to six weeks for a blemished scar to heal, but if you use any products with our callus cultivation technology, it will actually regenerate the skin quicker and will heal in two to four weeks.”

Racinne uses this regeneration technology in four different series that target common skincare issues. “We just want people to feel comfortable in their own skin,” Lam says. Between the Aqua Blanc, Hydra Perfection, Delicare Perfection and Youth Power series, Racinne has designed products to brighten, hydrate, soothe and prevent aging of your skin.

The anti-aging line, Youth Power, is the most popular series. It uses key ingredients that are also exclusive to Racinne to promote elasticity and boost collagen reproduction in skin.

In fact, Youth Power can – and should – be used by people of all ages, Lam says. Finding a skincare product, whether it is for wrinkles or pimples, should not be a complicated process. “We want young people to realize that the Youth Power series can be used for preventative measures; it is not just designed for older people.” It is not just Racinne’s pioneering technology that makes it stand out in the skincare industry. With the right price, Racinne wants to transform the market of high-end skin products. Operating with the priority of creating an effective product that can be used by every woman, man, and child, Racinne genuinely wants everyone to embrace their skin. “Racinne founder Edwin Tseng has created affordable luxury beauty products and devices that can be indulged by everyone, not just the rich and famous,” Lam says. Additionally, all Racinne products are paraben free and have not been tested on animals. What underlies this international company’s quest for ground-breaking skin care technology is the fundamental belief that you should celebrate your skin in natural, healthy ways. “These days, society encourages people to turn to methods like Botox and surgery, but it is really unnecessary,” Lam says. Rather, she says, dealing with blemishes, scars, and imperfections by using natural products to build confidence in your own body is a much healthier way to appreciate the gift of your skin.

Odlum Brown Limited Where being different is making the difference

A

As the largest independent, employeeowned brokerage firm based in Vancouver, Odlum Brown’s success in the investment industry is the result of a business model that aligns the interests of the firm with those of its clients. This approach dates back to the firm’s founding in 1923; Odlum Brown’s employees and clients have always been on the same team. However, in an industry where potential conflicts of interest are almost inherent, this can be a difficult model to uphold. Murray Leith, Executive Vice President and Director of Investment Research at Odlum Brown, says that the firm’s independence is its greatest asset in this pursuit. Odlum Brown is purely a retail advisory firm; because they do not engage in corporate finance activities or trade for their own account, they are free from many of the pressures faced by other financial institutions. Rather, the company is exclusively committed to providing quality service and value-based recommendations that are consistent with clients’ needs. “There is really a singular focus on the individual investor,” Leith says. To further support clients, the firm performs all key administrative functions internally, an area that many firms outsource to third parties. Added value also comes from financial planning subsidiary Odlum Brown Financial Services Limited and an in-house research team.

Being wholly owned by its employees creates a reciprocal relationship whereby the employees who contribute to the firm’s success directly benefit from it as well. Because the vast majority of Odlum Brown’s employees are shareholders themselves, “we’re all aligned around

the same interest. Here, we want our analysts, and actually expect our analysts, to own the stocks they recommend. You get better, unbiased opinions when they have their money on the line too,” says Leith, who runs the team of seven equity analysts.

By holding steadfast to its core values of independence and putting clients first, Odlum Brown has not only survived, but thrived in an era when many Canadian firms – particularly independents – have struggled. “In an industry that is largely focused on profits, Odlum Brown is focused on clients,” Leith says. Indeed, this “high-road, long-term approach,” as Leith puts it, could be described as the road less travelled. But being different makes a difference. Rather than encouraging clients to chase trends and buy into hot sectors, Leith says Odlum Brown would much rather advocate solid investments with durable competitive advantages that will perform over the long term, a style that has built a loyal, happy client base from referrals over time. Further, just as Odlum Brown’s business model ensures that client and employee interests are aligned, Leith says the firm’s analysts are also attracted to companies run by managers with skin in the game, who ultimately have stakes in their own business. On every level, Odlum Brown has modeled itself as a firm where the success of clients, employees and the business as a whole are one and the same. Says Leith, “We all firmly believe that if we do what is right for the client, employees will be fulfilled and the firm will be successful.”

Amherst Funeral & Cremation Services Transforming the funeral industry with affordability and transparency

A

Amherst Funeral and Cremation Services is driven by the principle that the best service can also be simple and affordable. Founded by Scott McFarlane, Amherst is a proudly Canadian, locally owned and operated, independent business. Free of ties to large, funeral chains and other funeral homes and chapels, McFarlane was able to base the company on what he truly believed the industry was missing. In 2008, Amherst was established with the firm belief that all families should have the right to quality and affordable funeral services, without having to sacrifice the dignity or respect of both the dying and the living. Nearly 10 years later, Amherst still operates on the creed that funeral arrangements should be simple, to the point, and free of sales pitches. “We don’t pressure families,” McFarlane, the owner, funeral director and embalmer of Amherst, said. “When death is imminent, our mission is to allow the families to focus on spending precious time with their loved ones, not to rush them to the funeral home to sign arrangement paperwork and distract them with complicated decisions about costs.”

With such laudable principles, it is easy for Amherst to be so transparent with their pricing and services. In fact, its funeral, cremation, burial, and memorial services have been recognized by several local awards, garnering Amherst the title of the best funeral home in the city by two accounts. As the recipient of the Georgia Straight’s Best of Vancouver ‘s Best Funeral Home for the sixth consecutive year, Amherst has also been honoured with the Westender’s Best of the City’s Gold Winner Award for Best Funeral Home for two years in a row. McFarlane said knowing that the people voted for Amherst on these awards gives him the pride that their mission resonates with all families from all walk of lives.

From the heart of downtown Vancouver to the neighbouring communities of Burnaby, Richmond, and North and West Vancouver, Amherst’s award-winning services extend throughout the entire Lower Mainland, covering communities from Chilliwack to Bowen Island. “We serve all types of families that represent the diverse Lower Mainland community we reflect,” McFarlane says. Beyond that, Amherst helps serve its communities by representing the rare, local, and independent choice that also provides competitive and affordable pricing, where the majority of funeral homes are now owned by international chains with heavy focus on sales.

excellence 2018 EDITION

Our mission is to allow the families to focus on spending precious time with their loved ones. Scott McFarlane

“We’re not in the business of upselling,” he says. “On the contrary, we work with families to bring you just the service you want: no more, no less.” Giving back to the community extends past Amherst’s breadth of services. With no chapel of its own, Amherst is able to share its profits with communities in need of financial support. It continues to network and give opportunities to churches and halls who open their facilities for funerals and memorials to help the families it serves. “Rather than profiting for ourselves, the revenue can go directly to the churches and community halls, which will directly benefit them,” McFarlane says. With such a simple, yet surprisingly uncommon, approach, it is no wonder Amherst Funeral and Cremation Services continues to grow. From its inception to today, the number of families who choose Amherst has grown tremendously. It is with pride that McFarlane says, “We simply believe that funeral, cremation and burial costs need not be overly complicated and financially draining, especially at moments of grief.” Suite 1209, 207 West Hastings St., Vancouver, BC T 604.831.3023 W amherstcremation.com

OPAL–Element Lifestyle Retirement Rethinking and remodeling retirement and aging

F

For Element Lifestyle, integrating retirement and a life filled with vitality has become more than just a business. Candy Ho, director and vice president, says that it is time to make some fundamental changes in the way older generations live out their last and well-earned best years. Element Lifestyle is a company that provides homes where older residents can live together with younger generations with the help of staff and medical professionals. Beyond that, the Vancouver-based company hopes to readjust societal attitudes towards aging altogether. Rather than treating aging as a separate phase, Ho says being blessed with a long, healthy, and purposeful life should be valued as a universal experience, especially now that advancements in science and medicine have prolonged the average lifespan by decades. “The need for support and care is obviously not isolated to seniors – it really is the adult generation who cares for them,” Ho says. “There is no way the government can provide all the funding, infrastructure and service required to adequately support the tsunami of the aging population that’s coming. Our company is unique in that we are both developer and operator. Element’s mission is to add value to society by developing new purpose-built communities and managing them for the long term.” The graying population, and society’s overall unpreparedness for it, is what sparked Element’s mission to create retirement communities that older people, and their families, will actually want to live in.

“That is the basis for our model,” Ho said, speaking to the global trend towards agefriendly societies. Leading by example, the family behind Element Lifestyle not only works together, but comes home to one another every day. Candy works alongside her father, Don, and her sister, Wendy. In her parents’ home, all three generations gather seven

days a week to spend time with Ho’s mother, who lives with Parkinson’s. For Ho’s mother, her life’s meaning and legacy is in her next generations. “She wants to share life stories with the little ones, soak in their lightness and positive energy, hear their laughter, learn from them new technologies, and observe their growth and development. Her family gives her the inner strength and determination to stay as well as possible,” Ho said.

Vancouver’s profiles of

excellence 2018 EDITION

At every stage, we all have much to give. Candy Ho

As a living example that it can – and does – work, the Ho family wants to improve the quality of life for future generations with this communal living model. In the development process of creating agefriendly communities, Element Lifestyle has already advocated for and put into action the concept of intergenerational living with personal support and nursing care, on a municipal level. Intergenerational living, in Ho’s eyes, is about providing a healthy, vibrant place for people of every age to live, where everyone can learn from each other, and take care of one another. “If you see long into the future, when this is the living arrangement across all places – with no more retirement homes or nursing homes – it would be just like any other home but with supportive and wellness services, and amenities that are programmed with engaging activities so people are dynamic and constantly grow with each other, irrespective of their stage in life,” Ho said. Ho frames it like this: “Purity, joy and lightness; skills, focus, drive; wisdom and experience. At every stage, we all have much to give.” Element works towards a future where the elderly generation is no longer cast aside, categorized, labeled, and stigmatized. The company is taking the lead to reshape society’s assumptions and perceptions about retirement and aging. However utopian it may seem today, Element believes that one day, all ages will be embraced as equal, integral contributors to the social fabric.

Handy Appliances A helping hand for every step of the way

A

At Handy Appliances, they understand that renovations and building projects can cause a headache like no other endeavour. That is why for the past 42 years, they have based their business model on endto-end, headache-free service. “We do everything under one roof,” said General Manager Rocky Mangat. As a fully-equipped service dealer, Handy Appliances is an all-encompassing company that does everything from selling and installing appliances, to servicing them and providing their parts. “We are with you from start to end,” Mangat guaranteed. With a division that assists in planning and product specifications, in addition to the in-house service team, Handy Appliances is there for its customers from inception to maintenance. Mangat says it has been a recipe for success that has landed them a loyal customer base. With such a wide variety of services offered, Handy Appliances has been able to cater to all customers, from the homeowners who come in to buy a single appliance to their larger, multifamily clients including UBC, Metro Vancouver Housing, and BC Housing. With an employee-base of around 30 people, this medium sized company capitalizes on personalized service. “It is not uncommon for our customers to be working with the same one person for the entirety of their project,” Mangat said.

photos: Dan Toulgoet

In fact, providing a myriad of services under one roof may have more benefits than one initially realizes. Mangat suggests a hypothetical situation that some people may be all too familiar with: “Let’s say you’re a multi-family builder, meaning you’re building a townhouse or a condo, and you buy your appliances from another store. Well, who’s going to install the appliances? Then you’re left with the third party trying to install those appliances and say some appliance isn’t

working, then what do you do? Then you’ve got to call the manufacturer to get them out to service the appliance. By that time, the homeowner and the builder are both frustrated.”

Meanwhile, on greener pastures at Handy Appliance’s Builder’s Division, the builders can buy the appliances, have Handy Appliances install them, and complete warranty services as well, all under the Handy Appliances’ trusted name. In addition to the multi-faceted service that Handy Appliances provides, there is also a live showroom that allows customers to see and try out appliances before making the commitment of purchasing it. From refrigerators to dishwashers to washing machines, 80 per cent of the appliances on the floor are live. “You essentially get to test drive your appliance before you buy it,” Mangat said. He said this pressure-free live showroom is all within Handy Appliance’s job to make its customer’s building projects as hassle-free as possible. The sales, parts, service, and installation divisions and live showroom are a testament to Handy Appliance’s commitment to providing outstanding customer service. They at Handy Appliances operate on the principle that if customers are treated right with the best competitive prices, top quality home and kitchen appliances and affordable repair services, they will return time and time again. This is part of the reason why most of its new business is derived from referrals; “people are so happy with their Handy Appliances experience that they encourage everyone they know to come to us first when looking for a new appliance,” Mangat said. “Our unparalleled service is just one way we at Handy Appliances would like to show our appreciation to our loyal customers for their continued business.”

Copeman Healthcare A peek inside the bold new world of private healthcare

F

For many, the inconvenience of hurried, all-too-brief doctor visits means more Canadians are exploring private options for their healthcare. Vancouver’s Copeman Healthcare is leading the way into a bold new world of private care. The clinic’s medical director and Family Physician, Dr. Beth Donaldson, was initially attracted to the team by the founder’s innovative ideas about preventative medicine. “I felt frustrated in my previous experiences at other facilities,” says Dr. Donaldson. “Visits with patients were short and typically only covered one or two issues. When I heard about this new model for team-based healthcare that focused primarily on prevention, I said, ‘Sign me up!’ Getting to really know my patients and helping them stay healthy is why I became a GP in the first place.” Copeman Healthcare is a primary care facility where patients are not only under the care of a dedicated family physician, but also have access to an entire team of medical professionals. By employing a collaborative approach that includes nutritional counselling, exercise medicine and in-depth diagnostics, as well as mental and cognitive health, care is highly personalized to each patient’s individual needs.

“We continually monitor our clinical outcomes, and our stats show that we are able to achieve excellent health outcomes,” Dr. Donaldson explains. “I think it simply comes down to collaboration and taking the time to thoroughly address patient issues through programs like LifePlus.” Copeman’s flagship care plan, the LifePlus Program features all-inclusive, year-round medical care, including ontime, unhurried appointments with a dedicated team of healthcare providers.

Each new LifePlus client receives a health risk assessment, lab work, a thorough medical history and diagnostics testing. Clients meet with those professionals who form their team and who prepare their personalized health plan. Any immediate needs are addressed with internal referrals or through specialist referrals to care providers in the community.

Nicola Fairweather, a 40-year-old director at Vancouver-based StoryTap, joined Copeman two and a half years ago. Originally from the UK, she saw it as a way to obtain a more personalized approach to her healthcare – something she had been missing since leaving home. “I didn’t have any key issues, but I missed having a real connection with my doctor,” she says. “I was so impressed with everyone I met. My nurse, Jill, and clinical coordinator, Christine, were extremely welcoming, and are always there to answer my questions. My doctor was amazing and wanted to know all about me – not just my medical history, but also my fears, my hobbies, my interests — everything. Everyone on my team is just so caring – it’s like a family.” Fairweather also appreciates that appointments are easy to book and run on-time. She also likes the convenience of seeing her doctor, getting lab work done and even doing personal training all in the same centre. “You truly get the feeling that they’re invested in your future just as much as you are,” she says. “Honestly, I just want to thank them for their attention and support, and for always being there for me.” To find out more about Copeman Healthcare Centre and the LifePlus Program, contact Ashley Hamilton at ahamilton@copemanhealthcare.com or 604-670-4822.
